Powerful debut novel from an author to watch! Emily Conrad is a rare gem of a writer. In JUSTICE, she's able to craft a story that is at once entertaining, heartwarming, and romantic, but also offers an honest, authentic look at real life in the real world. With prose that hints of literary style and thematic depth to match, this tale is rich, nuanced, and unexpected. Best of all, this story shines the hope of God on difficult circumstances.

JUSTICE deals with a past sexual assault and the repercussions of that, so some of the story is necessarily dark. But the author threads hope and healing into every step of the heroine's journey which balances the weightiness of the topic for readers. Emily Conrad has a way of taking me places I may not want to go, but in the end, I'm so glad I went because I am uplifted and changed for the better.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that JUSTICE is about so much more than a woman's recovery from assault. In fact, that's not the real center of this story at all. The heart of this vibrant tale is a struggle we can all relate to--Why do bad things happen to good people? Why does it seem that injustice prevails? Through the hero's and heroine's journeys, Emily Conrad throws away the easy answers and fabricated excuses to reveal the truth about God's role in suffering and apparent injustice.

The sweet result is redemption, hope, and a beautiful romance like you've never read before and will never forget!

Emily Conrad's debut, Justice, is an emotionally rich, page-turning look into a young couple's lives as they deal with a traumatic incident and their budding relationship. The story beautifully paints the struggle humans have trusting God amidst trials and believing He'll execute justice so that we don't have to.

Coffee shop owner/youth group pastor Jake and his best friend/long-time crush, Brooklyn, must work through not only Brooklyn's rape but also the aftermath--an unexpected pregnancy. They both know that in their small town, the waves of gossip could drown them. Jake has always loved Brook, and as he struggles to help her he also comes against attacks to his business. Finally sharing her secret helps Brook process what happened, but the guilt and shame cause her to question God's goodness, her faith, and her relationship with Jake.

The story is told in alternating points of view, and I felt Jake's was especially strong. The author weaves a bold faith thread that helped buoy the characters and will the reader, as they experience the joy and heartache that Jake and Brooklyn do. Beautifully shown also, is the influence of gossip and judgement in the church, and how harmful it is to everyone involved.

Justice tackles difficult issues with grace and lovely, flowing prose. The author is a gifted wordsmith, and the faith element is powerful and well-done. I loved the reminder that God works all things for our good, even terrible trials we can't understand in the moment.

I highly recommend Justice to fans of Inspirational women's fiction. 4.5 stars, and I'm eager to read more from this talented author/storyteller.

Emily Conrad has made a statement with her debut novel (or at least I'm making one for her!). Look out world, I am not afraid to write about topics that some people gasp over. Yes, there are some difficult topics in this story (I can't name them all because it would be a spoiler). In no way is she glorifying these things, but rather presenting them in a way that shows how God works things for the good, even those things that make us gasp or cry. Ms. Conrad wrote a beautiful story here, one that will stay with me for a long time.

Jake's character is like a warm blanket - one that you always want around. I've mentioned to people that he is the type of man I want my daughter to marry. Kind, patient, loves the Lord, and wise beyond his years. Don't get me wrong, Jake has his faults as you will see in this story. At times he angered me because he let his angry emotions get the best of him, but don't we all? He was so very gentle with Brooklyn, never pushed or forced anything. **sigh** He makes you wonder how many men are actually out there in the world like him? Maybe we should give this book to all the young men out there to take some lessons.

As much as I loved Jake, I must admit that seeing Brooklyn's walk and growth throughout this story was such a joy to read. She reminds me of many young women in this world, naïve, afraid to be loved, feeling of unworthiness, and in a sense stubborn. She has built a wall up around herself that only certain characters seem to be able to get through - about two in fact. I love the knitting group that she goes to. We should all have a similar group on women who can guide us and help us.

Love, redemption and forgiveness are in the forefront of this book. Whether it's two businesses battling for customers, a division of the church, or the characters internal division, you can see the battle of good versus evil throughout. But perhaps the biggest message presented is just how much we need the Lord, and although we are unworthy, He loves us anyways. Thank you Emily Conrad for lifting my spirits and writing such a touching story. I cannot wait to see what stories you bring in the future!

Emily Conrad has chosen an emotionally charged premise for her debut novel, and it’s one that cannot help but engage the reader—all the more so for the way in which she handles it. Pregnancy is life-changing no matter how or when it occurs, but Brooklyn’s circumstances take life-changing to a whole new level. Add a bitter and competitive business owner into the picture and you have a situation ripe for character growth and meeting some of the big challenges to living out your Christian faith head-on.

One of the things I appreciated about this story was that it didn’t just focus on Jake and Brooklyn but took in the wider impact on their church and community. This was partly a result of action taken by the aforementioned bitter business owner, but appearances and rumours don’t have to be true to cause damage, particularly when you work with impressionable teenagers.

The other thing that struck me was the maturity of these characters, Brooklyn in particular. They’re dealing with some pretty intense emotions—and misunderstandings—and as we all know, emotions can cloud logic; can even override head knowledge or blind us from seeing things clearly. There’s a lot for them to work through, but the underlying maturity of Jake and Brooklyn made it a rewarding journey for me as a reader and as a Christian, rather than a soap-opera type melodrama.

To top it all off, there is a beautiful love story here, and I use that term advisedly as this story goes deeper than mere romance in way that was thoroughly authentic for these characters.

This is a strong debut from Emily Conrad, and I look forward to more to come.

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Youth pastor/coffee shop owner Jake has a few lessons to learn about vengeance and trusting God's plan when his BFF/forever crush, Brooklyn, turns up unexpectedly expecting. We went on quite the roller coaster with Jake as he struggled with his feelings for Brooklyn, his desire to help her, and drive for revenge for several completely understandable reasons. I really felt for him, as I know the helpless frustration that comes from wanting nothing more than to fix a problem for someone I love, and not being able to lift a finger to do so.

I always appreciate Christian fiction that's bold enough to deal with difficult issues, and this one definitely fit that bill. Brooklyn's pregnancy results from a sexual assault, and the emotions this raises in the characters are very real. Jesus never shied away from the ugliness of life, so I'm always grateful when authors follow his lead and bring God's light into some of the darkest evil the world flings at us.

For me (and I want to stress those first two words) sometimes the spiritual lessons felt a bit heavy-handed, but again that's a matter of personal preference. Overall, the book was beautifully written. If you're interested in a story of forgiveness, redemption, healing, and all things--even some of the worst things--working together for good, then I think you'll like Justice.

Perfectly tender story of love and loyalty. In her debut novel, Emily Conrad writes about sensitive topics with the thoughtfulness and care of a big sister. Her characters face social issues and victimization with strength and grace. I fell in love with Brooklyn and Jake and have never hoped for a happily ever after more! The romance thread was enough to make my heart skip a beat!
I look forward to reading more from her!

Author Emily Conrad has penned a page turning, stay up late to read it, wonder Christian novel. "Justice" was the first I have read by this author and I devoured the 220 page book in one day. I obviously did not want to put it down.

The writing style of author Conrad is definitely to my taste. When reading Christian fiction I want at least some mention of God in it and some life lessons, scripture, too. This book was God glorifying and did not shy away from mentioning faith or God. Bravo Ms. Conrad!

Her characters were so well defined that we had become friends. I was invested in their trials and triumphs. Each character was well rounded, including having some flaws. They were human and not perfect. I enjoyed the dialog which flowed seamlessly. It never sounded stiff or forced. The descriptions and subjects tackled took me there in the middle of the story. I cried and laughed. Like I said before, I was invested. Even the secondary characters are well established. Some are loved and other not even liked!

Jake was a Youth Minister that owned a coffee shop. Brooklyn, his longtime friend and potential love interest, is sexually assaulted and ends up pregnant. The author writes inspirationally how this effects so many people and how many are quick and free to pass judgment. We aren't called to judge. Only God does that. Jake wants revenge, justice, but he wants to have faith and follow God. His competitor across the street is hopping and working on this attack being the ruin of Jake and even Brooklyn.

"Justice" tackles real life tough issues that we are quick to ignore but still happen. It makes you ponder "what if" this happened to my loved one or someone I knew. How strong is my faith? Do we really forgive others especially when something horrible happens? It also is a novel of God's love, hope, faith, and trust. God can and does make something good about something bad. It takes on greed, lies, and deception. Sounds like real life, doesn't it?

I highly recommend this book. If you are a Christian fiction fan that doesn't mind taking a ride on the emotional roller coaster, for which only a very good author can supply tickets, this book is for you. "Justice" stayed with me for days after reading it. Definitely there are things to think about in this excellent book. I gladly give it 5 out of 5 star.

Achingly-tender from the first chapter, this story captured my heart in a tangible way, stamping my memory with brilliant strokes of grace.

Having previously read—and enjoyed—short stories written by this author, I’ve been anticipating Justice’s release. Sensitive issues laced the pages, but with a poignant delicacy, the story skillfully addresses the layers of grief and bitterness which often arises from trauma, revealing that the beauty of forgiveness can bloom in even the most heartbreaking trial.

I was immediately drawn to Brooklyn. I found myself championing her healing from the tragic assault that left her soul broken and her life in shambles. I admired her convictions, hoping as the chapters progressed, that she’d find the wholeness she desired and discover the once-in-a-lifetime love given by Jake.

Out of the scores of heroes I’ve met through novels, Jake stands alone as far as loyalty is concerned. His devotion reminded me a lot of Christ—unconditional and fervent. The relationship Brooklyn and Jake shared is beautiful and inspiring.

So add these engaging characters to a vivid plot penned with a unique voice, and it equals an unforgettable story! I can't wait to see what this author brings us next!

Forgiveness and rape are not easy subjects to write about convincingly, but Emily has done it. The strengths of this book are the dialogue and the characters. I love the coffee shop setting and the small town-yearning-for-a-bigger-heart feel. Jake and Brooklyn do not disappoint. Their love story feels real because it isn't easy. Honest and very well done.

At the core, this story’s title is the one-word bare truth of each character’s reality. Revenge, payback, responsibility, love, forgiveness, and loss all expose the depth of faith and steer the course toward Justice.

Friends from childhood, Jake and Brooklyn can’t seem to figure out what being in love with each other might look like. Their buddies and parents all expected them to marry long since, but Jake and Brooklyn explore relationships with others while they learn to navigate the scary world of responsible adulthood. When the time is finally right for them to move toward each other, crisis inflamed with outside jealousy steps between them. It takes ever-maturing belief to weather the storms, and a lot of help from their friends in an attempt to step back and find the bigger picture.

Jake is a driven young man, full of life and faith, overcoming the devastating death of his father and rising above to operate a popular business while making a difference, or trying to, in the lives of young people at church. Jake tries to follow in the footsteps of his bigger-than-life father, as well as fight the good fight of faith and hormones in the teenagers he wants to influence. He just can’t seem to work up the courage to show his longtime female buddy how he feels. Brooklyn is a naïve young woman who tortures herself by living in the shadow of her dysfunctional and cruel mother. She tries to convince herself that she’s not good enough for anyone, especially God, but has the sense to reach out to a wonderful group of women role models and finally, the person she’s leaned on for most of her life, Jake. When everything goes south, it’s grow up or shut up time. Jake falls back on his deep-seated anger while Brooklyn begins to understand the meaning and sacrifice of forgiveness. Watching their journeys crisscross and wander is a delight. Well-done.

Most of the side stories are woven beautifully into the thread of the story; the biggest one, that of the business competitor, feels a little like a shiny thread that is rough against the grain. While it’s more realistic to be on the side of the victim and not truly understand the hows of the vengeance-seeking little demagogue, I am left feeling a little puzzled. It’s like the scratchy tag on the inside of your shirt. Jake has some growing-up to do, and his business rival helps him learn, on a lesser scale, the lesson in forgiveness that Brooklyn is teaching him through her own faith expedition.

Told through multiple viewpoints, this debut novel is rich in Christian faith portrayal, and not shy about the depth and realities of sin. The characters have great dialog and emotional depth which spoke to me. Those who read deeply inspirational romantic fiction will find much to love about Justice.

Justice

What happens when a devout Christian woman, Brooklyn Merrill, goes through one of the worst possible experiences when at a conference for her job? This is a hard story to read as it is highly emotional. It is certainly timely during the current atmosphere for the female population. How is this woman treated? Do her friends and family stand along with her as she deals with a devastating experience, shocking news and moves forward to make one of the hardest decisions of a lifetime?
If you are a Christian how do you treat others? You may ask yourself some hard questions while reading this book. This is a full-on Christian lifestyle story and believable theme. Expect Bible verses and the representation of a variety ‘church goers’ along with true followers of Christ. The difference shows in these pages. There is also a secondary story which features Jake’s business and challenges he finds he must meet as a Christian.
I will admit that the very beginning of the story was confusing to me as it appeared to have two main male characters, Jake and Caleb. (It’s perfectly fine for a female character to have two male friends but at first, I couldn’t tell who the main character was, and in all honesty, it could have to do with Brooklyn’s confusion.)
Overall the story is interesting and thought provoking. The main characters have some major life situations to deal with. There are plenty of secondary characters and conflict to keep things moving along too. The author, Emily Conrad, certainly highlights Christians in a realistic way, the good and sadly, the judgmental.

Emily Conrad's debut novel, "Justice" does not disappoint! This book deals with the trials, the messiness, and the injustice reality throws at us, and yet this book inspires and shows how amazing God is and how He can use any situation for His glory. Emily Conrad did a fantastic job at bringing the characters to life, following Brooklyn as she copes and triumphs after a sexual assault. And following Jake as he battles with revenge. The settings, downtown and Jake's coffee shop were all told really well with excellent imagery, making you feel like you were really there. I wish Jake's coffee shop was actually real. :P

Yes, this story deals with a sexual assault, which may be a bit difficult for some readers, and I completely understand. But I'm here to assure you that this book does not go into extreme detail of what happened to Brooklyn. The path to forgiveness and healing that both Brooklyn and Jake go on is inspiring and is the main journey of this story.

Justice was as very hard and very serious for me to go into - the book has real subject matters - serious subject matter that many women go through and many men are going though also and with having to sort of dealing with whether they are aware of it or not but if they are Christians like those in the book. In the book GOD takes care of those involved and HE guides and takes care of the situation on all ends. HE also takes vengeance - like in the Scripture where it says "Vengeance is mine saith the LORD". I would not want to be on the other end of that would you? In this story this goes through a lot more than you know, right now trust me , way more and she has GOD, that is how she is making it through it all - this is one to read if you are into a very serious book. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.

My full review can be found at: C Jane Read.

This story deals with a difficult issue and shows how gossip and judgement can really hurt people. It also shows how keeping the focus on God and trusting Him will help you persevere through and bring you out on the other side stronger. God can use any situation for His glory. I hurt for Brooklyn, I hated the she felt so ashamed and felt like she had to go through this alone when she was innocent. But thankfully she had people around her who showed her she didn’t have to be alone and supported her. Overall I enjoyed the message of the story and felt it was done well. I liked how the author did not back down from dealing with a difficult matter and incorporated scripture without it feeling forced. This was a wonderful debut novel and I look forward to more from Ms. Conrad. (I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.)

I absolutely loved this book! Real life is not easy, and the characters in this book stay true to this in their dealings with the events in their lives. The characters show a range of reactions that are very true to our own human nature. From being angry & wanting to seek justice on our own rather than turning it over to God, to finding a way to forgive, not only others but themselves as well, the author made these characters very relatable. While dealing with some very serious topics, the author also did a good job of infusing moments of joy and lightness into the story as well. I found the book to be very enjoyable to read, while also helping me to remember that we are to leave judgment and justice to God. I highly recommend this book. I received a free copy of this book for review, but all opinions and comments are my own.

Justice is a heart-wrenching and thought-provoking read. The two main characters—Brooklyn and Jake—are Christian young professionals who each suffer a significant injustice, which challenges their faith and their relationship. Each must choose how they will respond. And that choice defines them.

Emily Conrad has crafted characters who are both realistic and relatable. Most of us have experienced an injustice at some point in our lives. And maybe as a result we’ve questioned God’s goodness. Maybe we’ve wondered if He’s punishing us. Maybe we’ve wanted to take matters into our own hands.

Are there lines we shouldn’t cross? What lengths will we go to get justice—or is there a better option?

Conrad explores those questions and more in her debut novel Justice. I’m looking forward to seeing more works by this talented author

It has been a long time that a romance has had this kind of effect on me. What an amazing book and one that the Lord used to convict me of something in my own life I had been harboring. The characters, Jake and Brooklyn, are so authentic and each of their journeys take the reader on an up and down experience not unlike their own. The book had me smiling, had me angry, had me in tears, and had me cheering. That is saying a lot for a book because it means the author developed the characters well. I can't say enough good about this book--you have to buy it and read it for yourself!! It is a terrific read and is a well-crafted story!! Emily Conrad's debut novel, set in a coffee shop, is truly a wake-up call full of in-your-face what-if's. It's easy to be a Christian when everyone around you follows the same small town norms. But what if someone didn't? What if someone you loved said she was innocent when all the evidence (and gossip) said she wasn't? Would it change the way you felt about her? Would it change the way Christ felt about her?

JUSTICE is full of surprises, secrets, and suspense, deception, and truth, all wrapped up with a biblical undercurrent. I love spending time with characters who are real and the characters in Conrad's novel are just that. You'll hate to turn that last page.

Emily Conrad tackles some heavy topics for today with grace and Kingdom eyes. Her heroine, Brooklyn, suffers a sexual assault resulting in a pregnancy. Brooklyn embraces the baby inside of her while holding firm to the Christian principle of forgiveness. Coffee shop owner and Youth Leader, Jake, loves Brooklyn, but his anger over the assault keeps him from being the man Brooklyn needs, and the man God needs him to be. Conrad not only makes the reader cheer for Jake and Brooklyn to have their happily-ever-after, she challenges the reader to reflect on how they handle difficult circumstances in their own life. This is a debut novel you do not want to miss. Conrad shows us how to survive in Christ when the world tries to steal your joy. A reflective page-turner of a story.

Justice is a beautifully written debut novel by Emily Conrad. I appreciate that Emily was not shy about hitting a few sensitive subjects and looking at them from a Christian point of view. Throughout the book, I kept thinking "how would I handle this situation"? It really made me examine my own attitudes about grace and forgiveness. Jake and Brook are easy-to-like characters, and I was pulling for them the whole time, yet I knew why things had to progress the way they did. You might get a little emotional reading this story, but it's so worth it. Do not miss this one! I look forward to reading more novels by Emily.

JUSTICE by Emily Conrad.
Brooklyn she brought this on herself, but Jake would be a friend for her. Was it Caleb, she said no, they all were getting careers going, marriage wasn’t for them yet. Letting God direct and his plans, was a strong theme in this good story. Of maturing and building a life around this, and Brooklyn would need a friend to lean on and help. Beautiful plot well done, and showing to be the friend in good times and tough times. Will look for more by Emily. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

This emotional story delves into the difficult issue of abstinence, rape, and the sanctity of life. The author addresses these issues and more in a sound, biblical fashion without allowing the story to compromise the fallacies of our human nature. Jake appears to be the perfect man until anger and a desire for revenge surface. Brooklyn rests fully on God‘s word and His will for her, but struggles with trust. As the story unfolds, the fine lines between justice and revenge are examined.

This is a debut novel. I hope to see more from Emily Conrad.

I enjoyed "Justice" by Emily Conrad. Jake and Brooklyn are good friends and Jake expects to marry her one day. But then he finds out that she is pregnant and she won't say who the father is. She says she will never marry. Can Jake and Brooklyn overcome all that is against them. There is danger and a mystery. Good read! I plan to read more from Ms. Conrad.
