There are many references to fasting in Scripture. In Saint Matthew’s Gospel, Chapter 5, Jesus puts the solution in front of us when he says, “When you fast.” He doesn’t say “If you fast,” but “When you fast.” As Christians, we’re supposed to imitate Jesus. Jesus fasted before every major event in His life. Jesus also tells us that “nothing is impossible for us.” Fasting was so important that Jesus taught it to His disciples to be used as a special deterrent against evil. These are the same evils that plague our world the attack on life, the attack on the family, the attack on our religious freedoms, and the attack on Christianity as a whole. It’s especially important to recognize that our actions and our participation can change all of this evil. This is why we are being told by Jesus that “nothing is impossible for us.” In this short booklet, you’ll learn how fasting is a spiritual weapon. You’ll also learn the basics of fasting, what saints, prophets and popes have had to say about fasting, and testimonials of people whose lives have been changed through fasting.
In 2001 I was blessed to hear Sister Emmanuael speak on the graces and merits of fasting. But over the years sadly I fell away from this practice. This past year of chaos and darkness I've felt the Lord calling me to return to fasting (Is 58:6). Reading LaVallee's book was just the refresher I needed. I've come to deeper awareness and understanding how fasting is a spiritual weapon and have experienced many graces even these past couple of months. Fasting for very specific intentions along with increasing prayer and adoration on fasting days (there is more time available when not preparing meals) has been an amazing grace. I recommed this litte book as a quick read, covering the basics of fasting, as well as practical considerations.
Unfortunately, I have to rate this book low, simply because it was very poorly written with almost no attention to grammar, little or no coherency, no structure, and here and there poor argumentation. I say this rather sadly, as I, in fact, agree with his overall thesis and many of the reasons that he puts forth in support of it. However, the guy, writes like an over-excited teenager, and it seriously mars his credibility.
