4 Estrellitas.
This is the third and final book in the St Leger trilogy. The hero is Valentine St. Leger, the second son of Madeline and Anatole. Val has the gift to heal people by getting their pain into his body. Unfortunately, this has caused him a limp that pains him awfully, when he tried to heal his brother from a severe wound during wartime. Val being a healer, is a gentle, tender, even tempered man who's very lonely. Evie, the current bride finder, has declared in The Night Drifter A Novel that she cannot detect a bride for Val. Since any woman he would choose to marry and has not been chosen by The Bride Finder, would face death as the St. Leger's legacy has predicted, Val is destined to live alone. But Kate, Evie's adopted daughter has loved Val all of her life and is determined to have him at her side, no matter what others say. After all, all that about fated brides and curse of death are silly superstitions, right?
Enter the last Mortmain, sworn enemies of St. Legers. He also appeared in the previous book, as a friend of Lance's that everyone distrusted, Val being the most prominent. Mortmain is now dying, but he has one final mission: to get revenge on Val. Somehow by the power of an ancient crystal those two men change personalities: Good, shy Val becomes a rogue and selfish man free to pursue that which he mostly wants: Kate. On the other hand Mortmain becomes a more decent man than he ever was, even feeling guilt for what he knows Val must be suffering. But even as he considers returning back to save the good doctor, a new better life is suddenly at his reach. Can he give it back for his old enemy? And will Val realize how dangerous the crystal really is? Because he is originally blinded by the miraculous heal that has happened to his knee, giving him the ability to ride and fence like any other young man. Now he can go after Kate, since he doesn't feel sorry for himself anymore. But Kate seeing Val's change is becoming more and more afraid for him and of him. Trying to free him from the spell he's under, she's spending most of her free time with Prospero and they become friends.
The major problem of the book was Val's change of character. Val was just adorable and interesting as he initially was. When he becomes a selfish rake, he loses the reader's sympathy completely. His total disregard about what would happen to Kate if he goes on with their affair -either death as the curse predicts or at least social ruin as the whole village learns about it- is not something a reader can overcome easily in the end. As Val goes on to test how much his powers have returned riding alone, Kate spends most of her time with Prospero letting too little room for the romance to grow. I found at that point Mortmain's story much more interesting than Val's which is so much shame as Val had potential to be the best hero of the trilogy if he just stayed as he was.
However, the heroes pain and emotions are strong and palpable throughout the book, the tone dark and menacing and the mystery very very addicting. If someone is not looking for a romance with some mystery but a complete gothic nonel with mystery and some romance thrown in for good measure, then I would definitely recommend it. Otherwise, this is only recommended for hard core fans of the series who want to read the closure to the St. Leger-Mortmain fight that's been going on for ages.
Probably the weakest of the series. I had really liked the Val character in the last book, and was looking forward to a book focusing on him, since his personality was vastly different than the 2 previous protagonists.
...But I guess to make him more "interesting" she throws in a bait-and-switch that turns him bitter, angry, and violent. Unfortunately, this does not equal interesting, first because it's been done in the previous two books, and second because he was interesting enough on his own. She probably would have done better to figure out how to create the story while keeping his character intact. (and I can think of ways in which the same basic plot points could have been covered without the personality overhaul)
That said, it was still a fun read, and the Mortmain subplot was finally finally engaging. The other two books had me skimming through the Mortmain sections, but this one was rather well done.
Watch for twists. Twist beginnings, twist middles, and twist endings. Twist twist twist.
Okay, with all three of the books in this series I was undecided while I was reading them how much I liked them. In the first one I was trying to get used to the paranormal stuff. This last book had a couple of scenes that need to be skipped and during the book I wasn't sure if I really liked the book at all. But at the end (as with the other two) I thought, wow, that was great.
Lovely series and lovely book! Valentine St. Leger is a great man all around. He is fierce, he is reliable and he literally absorbs his patients pains with his St. Leger power. The problem is sainthood is a heavy load over Val’s shoulders. Deep inside he is just a man with flaws, insecurities, guilts and regrets, but his public persona makes it impossible for him to be himself. Kate is an orphan adopted by Evie Fitzleger, but not before the girl had suffered terrible childhood traumas. The first person in her new Town that saw Katie as more than a useless foundling was Val, who talked to her like a person, respected her feelings, and was her hero and best friend ever since. She immediately became infatuated, but a child innocent infatuation. The St. Legers are a special lot and together with their paranormal powers they are bound to marry the brides chosen for them by the family Bride Finder. Effie, Kate’s adoptive mother, was the current bride finder and, astonishingly, declared that there was no bride for Val St. Leger. Val was devastated. Kate was relieved. She was convinced she would grow up and make Val realize that the Bride Finder legend was just folklore. Time passes and things are much more complicated than Kate could ever imagine... Legends, paranormal powers, nosing relatives, archenemies intending on killing the St. Legers, and a most loveable ghost of a St. Leger ancestor (Prospero) stand on the way of our beloved couple. As a plus, the HEA of Raff Mortmain is so very sweet!!! Corinne is a strong and loving woman and Charles is the son Raff never knew he always dreamed of having. Sweet brown eyes and a child unconditional love were the medicines to cure this battered and cold heart. Great book! Loved every minute
I don't mind a hero that's a bit dark, but I draw the line at a hero that is just an asshole. Why the author made the choice to take a "nice guy" into a dark, brooding jerk is beyond me. And if the heroine fell in love with him when he was kind and gentle, why would it be okay with her when he turned into the opposite?
Some plot lines got tied up with a nice bow that was ridiculous. For example, Kate discovers who her mother is. Her mother tells her that after she was born, she was given to a family member/friend who was going to ensure that she was given to a nice family. Instead, she is dropped off at a foundling home. Her mother comes back for her 10 years later and discovers Kate's been dumped off, visits the home (where the proprietress is known to require the older girls to have "customers") and is miraculously able to find her. Really? Am I to believe that the foundling home that is also a prostitution ring kept accurate records of babies dropped off ten years earlier? All that was required was a "I'm here to pick up little Kate Nolastname?" When Kate is struggling for pages and pages about the revelation of her parents, I was rolling my eyes and muttering, "Don't worry about it, you are as just as likely to have been the product of a liaison between the upstairs maid and the footman."

The first book in the series was certainly the best, the second one was quite enjoyable, and this one was disappointing. I hated the main plot line with the personality switch, and wish that Carroll would have written a different story for Val. I did enjoy the discovery of Kate's parentage, but was otherwise unimpressed.
A fun historical romance. Great tension, really likable characters and a good ending. My only complaint is the quick and tidy tie up of a conflict in the story. I never like the easy tidy fixes. But otherwise a good read. I am looking forward to reading more of Susan Carroll's works.
I loved this book so much. There are two stories going in the book that are woven in and out of each other. It is definitely a paranormal historical romance. There are curses, spells, a ghost and magic. But it true love that's most powerful.
I didn't like this one as well as the other two in this set. Still a good book, but I don't like that the good guy turns bad. However, I love the fact that the bad guy gets second chance at life.
I found myself sucked in within the first ten pages and not wanting to put it down. I found the story of Kate and Valentine St. Leger to be magical as well as heart wrenching. Keep the tissues close.
I was gifted a copy of this book I'm not sure how the author thought this would be the perfect ending for Val and Kate but it isn't; it's the worst ending ever, especially for Val, who's a romantic at heart, who so much wanted a bride, and for Kate, who knew from the moment she saw him that he would be the one. How could Effie be so cruel? It's inexcusable. The way she said no bride for Val in the previous book was too final, too fast. I'm confused. All the St. Legers kept their secrets hidden, but apparently Val and Kate spent a lot of time talking about his family and hers. Also confused as to how Rafe kept news of the village and Val, who was declared dead before Rafe left. Lance was never a great brother, too self-centered, so much like Effie. Too predictable, by 10% I could see where it was going and pretty much how too. I hated the way Kate treated Rafe; it was completely uncalled for, plus it was Effie's fault; she could have reached out instead of running away, hiding, and then lying for 20 years. The story between Rafe, Corinne, and Charley is really sweet. For the record, Kate was never abandonned by Rafe, only by Effie. Unbelievable: 1. OMG, Kate is wrenching books one after the other - 500 y.o. books!!!!! 2. Marcus leave the village after 30+ years because he can't take Anne's memory anymore → too farfetched. 3. The difference between the two Valentine - more assertive would have been okay, not cruel, rude, and violent. 4. Are you kidding me? Their first time, he pulls his pants down and kept the rest????Certainly not the way she dreamed it would be. Talk of unwanted attention, witchcraft, black and dark magic, (could be triggers). Editing needs a serious pass, especially all the 1s passing for an I, then all the missing words and the rest. I'm so glad this series is finished!

So paranormal romance/ goth fiction is pretty new to me. The only ones I've read in that genre at all are the Deborah Harkness' Discovery of Witches books and Patricia Briggs' werewolf & coyote books. Fun, "popcorn reads".
This was a fun popcorn read but also quite well written. I was impressed with the writing. Good summer reading. I think I'm going to read some more of her work.
This is truly a love story, not just woowoo, and the biggest magic in the book is the magic of true love. The characters are well drawn and it had a happy ending where transformation and hard work and hope prevail over darkness. Exactly the sort of magical romance one needs in these dark times.
Another lovely tour in this slightly paranormal world. Strong heroine. Valentine St. Leger is the perfect tortured hero--he gets to live his dark side through a series of weird events that his heroine thinks she causes. Then she finds out the truth of her parentage. In the end, the villain is also healed. Good story, well written, these folks have employed sufficient editors and proof-readers, for a change. Just the right amount of magic! Not so much that it is silly or unbelievable. Sex is just right--not to vivid, nor too tame.

Part of the Bride Finder series, and set in Cornwall. Thirty-two year old Valentine St. Leger is a local doctor with ability to heal. Nineteen year old Kat Fitzleger is the ward of current Bride Finder. Kat defies the superstition by casting a love spell on Val.
Carrol’s plot blends historical romance with elements of fantasy.
I skimmed my way through half this book and I just did not care about any of the characters or anything that was going on. I read the first two in this series probably a decade ago and maybe this type of romance just isn't for me anymore.
The story of the st Meters is marvelous. If you haven't read the first two please do so. I do think Midnight Bride is my favorite. What a beautifully told story. Thank you.
