2.5 stars. Better than the last, more action and more dynamic characters. Still a fair bit of sexism, female character do not pass the brechdel test and the few times they do they're at each others throats for ridiculous reasons like - 'she's pretty and I'm smart so we can't get along'. Tell not show was ever present in this book as it was the last, but can't expect to much of a drastic change in only two books. Hopefully the third can redeem the series and showcase the completion of the character development shown in this book.
With the Named threatening their world, Charlie and his friends must seek out the Guardian, a being whose life is currently under threat from their Nether enemies, taking them on a quest across realms to save him before his - and their - time runs out. Lorey will entertain younger readers with more action and twists in a tale that dips its toes into originality. What sort of dangers will Charlie have to face to prevent the Named from having their way?
7/10, this was an ok novel which feels like a cheap imitation of Harry Potter with a few bits of originality here and there but overall this was another slog to get through. The beginning was disorienting until I realised that this was book two in the series and my library couldn't be bothered to get books one and three or they removed them some time ago but I really don't know. It starts off with three really flat characters named Charlie Benjamin, Violet Sweet and Theodore Dagget fight off some strange monsters from somewhere and then they were called to the equivalent of Hogwarts known as Nightmare Academy, how original, which was in the Bermuda Triangle and built out of boats and what could possibly go wrong with that. Then Charlie and the teachers there discuss the imminent threat of the monsters so they go to the Nether and try to stop them and the worldbuilding is fine and gets the job done however there were a few unanswered questions that I thought about like how did the Nightmare Academy and the Nether come to being and who were these monsters and there were apparently also four leader monsters whose names I forgot and they were just flat antagonists to try and stop the protagonists and guess what, the latter won but not before they destroy an entire city. In the end there was a fifth monster who killed the other four leader monsters since she didn't need them anymore and another big war is going to begin and it ends in a cliffhanger with no way of knowing what happens next. If you like books like Harry Potter read the first one or read the original ones or an alternative like Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger. It's also a shame that this series never really took off but it's an interesting series that has untapped potential and more people should know about it.
Ever since Charlie Benjamin discovered that he had the Gift, things have changed for the Nightmare Division. Charlie has shown much progress since he first joined: making friends, using his powers and becoming a respected member. Despite defeating a major enemy, the entities are not resting, they plan to launch an invasion on Earth by killing the Guardian that blocks them from penetrating through. Charlie is ready to put an end to their nightmare, but this battle will cost him more than he realizes.
As the sequel, there is a faster pace to this story, as Charlie has shown himself to be very skillful at his gifts and very sure of himself. The World building is ever growing and the kid characters get more focus here, as Charlie brings his friends on his adventures. Already this novel shows that the stakes are much higher with the new war, add to that the complexities of growing up, makes an intriguing story. Along with a high number of notable characters, there are many perspectives show the difficulties of making tough decisions and the extremities experienced in having to grow up faster in the middle of a crisis. All in all, it sounds like things can get confusing, but the plot is a lot more exciting here than the first book. The only real drawback is that the final act is stopped on a cliffhanger, leaving a lot of threads still open for the next book.
I love books about academys where you can learn magical abilities so that's why I picked up this book. I also am a fan of monsters so win win situation! I've only read this one even though it's the second book in a serie and that's fine no 'Who's this? or Why are they doing that?' questions. You can read it as a stand alone. It's a fast paced read and I want to read the other books!
!!!!Spoiler down below!!!!
The only things I thought were odd: 1. the fact that they left the guardian completely alone during the battle. I already puzzled out that it was a fatal flaw. 2. Furthermore the three main characters start out as noobs passing there addy level which still is a lower level of skill. That didn't stop them from fighting and winning from level 5 beasts which are the most advanced. Seemed like your training level didn't matter. Didn't bother me it's just surprising.
Charlie has finished his first year at Nightmare Academy, and he and his friends take the test that will see if they're ready to be Addys instead of Noobs. A surprising turn of events reveals that something strange is happening in the Nether.
Before he and Headmaster can convince the Nightmare Division to take action, the Named strike a stunning blow to the defenses that protect not just Nightmare Academy, but the whole world. Charlie has to take the lead and work with his friends to stop the remaining 2 Named from leaving the Nether, but it seems like every decision Charlie makes--though he means to do good--backfires horribly.
I can't wait to read book 3! Charlie and his friends have grown so much since their first adventure, but they still have so much work to do to save the world.
Just as bad as book 1. I wanted to give this series a chance to try to improve before declaring it a write off. I wasn’t all that surprised that I was let down by another poorly written novel.
The novel begins rather abruptly, more like the following chapter than a sequel to a prior book. The characters remain unlikeable and undeveloped. The plot remains spotty, too quick and predictable. The only unpredictable point in the whole novel is that Slagguron is a shapeshifter who took the image of a child to escape the nether.
+4 stars because (although I didn’t know it) I’ve been waiting 13 years to read this book. I read the first NA book when I was 12 and I had no idea it was a series! Fast forward to me being 25 and eagerly awaiting my ThriftBooks delivery so I could demolish the sequel in one sitting. Tabitha has chipmunk cheeks just like me!!! 🥹 I saw my younger self in Violet but I see my adult self so much in Tabitha. I did not see Pinch’s betrayal coming. I’m so excited to see how Charlie and co. will survive the war! At least…. fingers crossed that they DO. -1 star bc not enough Tabitha and Rex content 💚

I think that the easiest way to sum this up is a really interesting idea written by a bad author. I think the whole portaling with the nightmares is cool but I wish he would tell us what exactly banishers do. Overall it was a decent book.
Lite spännande är det allt, när det traskar på i samma spår som ettan. Synd att inte resten av delarna blivit översatta. Gillar idén med att alla drar sitt strå till stacken.
A second novel with twists that were entertaining. I thought this one was slightly better than the first book. I was happy to get back to the three main characters that still reminds me of Harry, Ron and Hermione.
My name is Violet, and I think Charlie, Theodore and I passed our test to become Addys. We're not sure since we allowed a level four monster to pass through a portal after rescuing a little girl from her nightmares. We've discovered the Guardian is under attack and all levels of monsters will invade earth if the defenses fall. The last of the Named will join the other two and summon the fifth. No one knows exactly what that means except it will be disastrous. It's strange that we're the ones tasked with finding a way to save the Guardian even though we may still be Noobs. All we need to do is find the last female Hydra, survive collecting some of her milk, and return through a monster-infested world to feed the Guardian. No problem.
You should probably read the first book in order to understand what's going on. It's not necessary, but it'll be very helpful. The most interesting part of the book involves the dynamics of the main characters. Theodore can open portals as a Nethermancer, but he wants to be a Banisher to make his father proud. Violet is the team's Banisher and seems to be hiding something from the others. Charlie is a Double Threat, able to open portals and banish monsters, but he's uncomfortable being the leader. The Director of the Nightmare Academy views Double Threats as a problem and has been working against Charlie and two others, and it comes to a head in this book. The plot contains many action scenes and describes an adventure through different worlds of dangerous monsters, arising from humans' nightmares. The series has had a "funnish" twist to fighting monsters, but the end of this book takes a serious turn. There are a couple of unexpected surprises that will hugely affect the book's sequel, Monster War. Overall, the series doesn't present anything dramatically different, but it's still very entertaining. Give it a shot.
A new evil is threatening to escape from the Nether and all that stands in its way is The Guardian, a small child-like creature who is anathema to the monsters of the nether. The Guardian lives under a portal to our world, and his ability to weaken nether creatures is the only thing keeping The Named from entering our world. The Guardian has one weakness- the touch of a human can kill it. Still, it desperately wishes for that human contact. The Named know this and are capturing children to bring back to the Guardian in the hopes that one will touch the frail creature and remove his protection from the portal. They quickly succeed in weakening The Guardian to the point of death. Charlie and his friends must go on a mad quest to find the only medicine that will heal the sad creature - hydra milk. The task seems daunting, since no one has ever seen a female hydra, and The Named are clever and treacherous, and are slowly forming a web that humanity may not be able to escape.
Once again, Dean Lorey writes a story full of strong and entertaining characters. Even the villains are brought to life with personalities of their own, breaking them out of the standard villain mold. Nightmare Academy: Monster Madness is full of adventure from the first page to the last, with plot twists and surprises that will catch almost any reader off guard. Many monsters that the reader is familiar with from the first book will be quickly recognized, along with a wide variety of new ones that bring even more life to the Nether. Nightmare Academy: Monster Madness would make a fine addition to a children’s library collection.
I strongly recommend this book to Action, fantasy lovers. Because Its really jam packed with action, with a very interesting setting/plot involving the Netherworld and the Human world to clash together. Its probably one of my favorite books of all time.
Charlie Benjamin is back at it again being the hero that he is in the story along with his friends. But Charlie isnt the only one who came back, Verminion and Barakkas known as "The Named" are seeking to unleash the other two named (Slagguron and Tyrannus) who seek to cause chaos within the human world. But there is one problem, the Guardian of the Nether is the only reason that Slagguron and Tyrannus cannot be summoned. The Guardian was a frail creature that is vulnerable to a child's touch. Therefore Verminion and Barakkas have sought out to bring children into the presence of the Guardian for it encourages children to give it a touch, despite that it may kill him. Charlie and his friends must go on a quest to find a cure for the Guardian, which happened to be milk from a hydra.
I think that Dean Lorey was trying to convey that despite your low chances of succeeding at your mission, that anything is possible as long as you put the work and effort into it. He did this by setting up the situation of the story and the obstacles that Charlie and his friends had to overcome on this quest, with such limited time.
Monster Madness is truly filled with adventure, fantasy, and action. Over all I give this book an A on the american grading system. I strongly recommend reading this book and maybe even the trilogy.
Charlie Benjamin and his friends are back in Dean Lorey's MONSTER MADNESS, the second book in the NIGHTMARE ACADEMY series.
Unfortunately, so also are Level 5 Nethercreatures Verminion and Barakkas, as they continue their quest to bring the remaining named (Slagguron and Tyrannus) out of the Nether and into the human world by weakening (and ultimately killing) the Guardian to a gateway between worlds.
It's up to newly upgraded Addeys Charlie, Theodore, Violet, Leet Facilitator Brooke, and Professor Pinch to venture inside the fourth ring of the Nether in search of a cure.
Enemies don't always come in giant, scary packages, though. Sometimes, they work inside the very agencies for which we fight - and sometimes an enemy is the person standing right by your side...
MONSTER MADNESS is a great book for younger readers suffering Harry Potter withdrawals. While the characters might not be quite complex enough for older teens, Charlie and company are an engaging trio full of bravery and gusto.
Lorey's background in screenwriting translates to steady pacing and key descriptions that allow you to easily picture scenes as they unfold in novel form. So grab your hot chocolate, a warm blanket, settle into a cozy chair, and enjoy an afternoon or two in Charlie's world.
Terutama saat The Guardian, pelindung akademi sedang sekarat?
This is the 3rd book of the nightmare academy in this book charlie Benjamin and his friends have to go through this adventure to get hydra milk to save the guardian so that the guardians aura can keep the last 2 name in the nether so they don't get out so they can summon the 5th named but pinch drank a sip of the hydra milk and now he returned to when he was most powerful and now he has the gift back.
What i like about this book is the action/story of the book it is so attaching you don't want to stop reading the book. What i don't like about the book is some parts in the story that doesn't make sense and why its in the book but that's just my opinion and that is why a like the book or dislike the book. This was a fun book to read so if you get a chance i think you should read the book for yourself's but if you haven't read the first book first you should read that one first.

Two of the Named are fighting to get into this world, two are already here; if they are united, they will unleash a terrible monster known only as the Fifth. The Guardian is the only thing keeping the world from a terrible fate. The Guardian, and Charlie, Theodore and Violet.
I love this series and I wish I'd found it when I was younger. It is very, very comparable to Harry Potter, and the only complaint I have is that the books are slightly too simplistic (which is totally understandable, seeing as they're not exactly, um, geared for adults). But the ideas are fantastic and original, and I adore Theodore beyond words. Truly, this book is captivating from beginning to end and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Monster Madness was better than Nightmare Academy, I felt like it held my attention better and that there was more suspense. This second book in the series contained more adventure and was more exciting to me than the first. I am looking forward to finishing the series and I hope that the third book is better than the second. Normally I never think of books as being geared to girls or boys and usually I like them all no matter the sex of the main character but I felt like this series is more for boys. I like them but I feel like boys would definitely be able to get more involved with the story, maybe it's the monsters...I don't know. I am not a huge monster person but I do like the story line.
I loved the second installment of monster academy if I had to choose I definitely think I'm a banisher. I like the turmoil in the ongoing relationship that Theo has with his father, but I think the character that stole the show is the Guardian. Beautiful quote as he lays dying. I can't wait to see what happens in the third installment with Charlie, Violet and Theo. As I work on turning the screenplay I wrote into a book I think I'm going to use your style of writing with multiple characters interacting.
When Charlie let the monster Barakkas out of the Nether Realm, it made the monsters one step closer to summoning the powerful Fifth. The other two great monsters of the Named are trying to make it to the human realm by escaping through a hole protected by the Guardian, who is dying, and Charlie has stop them by saving the Guardian.
This is an interesting series, and I am feeling kind of annoyed at Pinch after finishing this book. I like Charlie, and I hope he succeeds in the nest book in defeating the Fifth.
