Dragon Gladiators #1

Dragon Gladiators

Rate this book
Librarian turned Gladiatrix.

That's what a female gladiator is called, not a term for a dominatrix in gladiator gear. Bummer right? I wish.

I'm Octavia Alexander. A few days ago, I was hiding out under a facade of normalcy, hiding my magic by being as mundane as possible. Every card I touch comes to life between my fingers, a simple deck of playing cards could be a deadly weapon in my hands.

Today, I've been recruited to a supernatural tournament of dragons in Ancient Rome, the dragon population is so low they have to recruit other sorts of magical creatures from other realms and times. Now I need to survive eleven battles to the death to earn my freedom against the biggest and baddest monsters from history and mythology.

Thankfully, the most dangerous dragons aren't in the arena, they're in my bed.

I thought I knew all of their secrets but I was so wrong, their secrets might just get us all killed.

*Do you like edge-of-your-seat action? Heart pounding sexual tension? Inappropriate humor? You'll love the Dragon Gladiators series!*

Urh. Have you ever read a book that was kinda bad but so good you had to finish it? The story was awesome. The characters were good although sometimes their actions didn’t make sense. The worst thing though were the constant information dumps. I had to skip through so many paragraphs because if not I would’ve been bored to death. But I just had to finish it and I’m glad I did. I just think the author needs a better editor. Maybe some beta readers for help. I truly enjoyed this story and can’t wait for the next.

I loved the story even though the ending almost spoilt it for me. I love the idea of time travel, the Roman Empire setting, I just wish the world was described a little bit more and not glossed over. I thought gladiator elemental dragons and cards magician is original. I loved that the heroine is not a damsel in distress. I love that its slow burn and I really loved the guys. I almost didn't mind that out-of-nowhere cliffhanger but it did annoy me. I really hate it when authors introduce a curve ball at the end of the book, especially when it is not supported by anything I came across in the story. I always feel like its deceptive, only meant to force the reader to go to the next book and that the author didn't have confidence that the story is good enough, on its own, to hold the reader's attention. As a reader I want to continue with the series because it is worth it, not because I was tricked in to continueing.

Other than that ending, this was a goodread and despite that ending I do really want to continue with the series.

Wow, this book is very descriptive and builds the story. So once you start reading, we just jump right into the action. There is a lot of action in the book. I loved that I was wondering what was going on. Octavia is a Librarian who has magic. Well when four guys dressed up in weird outfits throwing bookcases around. Octavia, finds out she knows these crazy dudes. They are Nevada, Azar, Cobalt and Raiden her childhood friends who are now all grown up. So this book gives you their story from when they were kids to now. Then Octavia wakes up in a different Era. Like What? Magic people! So why is she there? Why are these men back in her life? Is there attraction there? Well there is a lot of fighting going on. Secrets are revealed and maybe a betrayal? That ending blew me away and I really need to know what is going to happen.

Ok so something about time traveling dragon shifters and a fancier female Gambit.

What first turned me off to this story was the tons of spelling and grammatical errors and just the inconsistency of details. But I trudged on. And then I just couldn't deal with the heroine anymore. She thinks she's super special because she likes to read...like she's the only one who likes reading. Then she insists on making suggestions in a situation that she literally knows not one thing about. Then she makes a comment of noticing that her clothes are the same colors as the banner her guys carry...so she's like oh I'm really smart, those are our team colors. But the guy who bought them for her literally told her that....so really she's actually pretty slow. Just a no thank you here.

My head hurts

I honestly don't think that there was a single paragraph without grammar issues. Some authors write dialogue using poor grammar on purpose since it suits the characters and that's fine. That was NOT the case here. The dialogue itself was choppy and stilted, but the entire body of work needs an editor....or honest beta readers.....or an author who actually proofreads (and has a better than 7th grade understanding of the English language). The world building was lacking, there were info dumps rather than story telling and the characters were one dimensional. This author has been added to my 'Never Again' list.

So so story, very poorly edited

I somewhat enjoyed the story, but I had a hard time with the main character. For as often as she said how anti-violence she was, she never seemed to have trouble killing people, and never struggled with doing so for very long. It just made her seem emotionally shallow and insincere. I am slightly curious about where the twist at the end is going in the next book, but I won’t be buying it because this book was so poorly edited it was difficult and annoying to read.

It was difficult to read because every page had problems. I can live with missing commas and run on sentences, but consistently including duplicate words, missing words, wrong words, incomplete sentences, etc...just drives me crazy. It really interferes with the ability to read a book smoothly. And, I can’t understand how any author would put something on line that is this bad. I’d be embarrassed if I was her. (Literally, every page seems to have glaring errors).

It's a good story

It really is, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys RH gladiator style stories, but there needs to be a serious rewrite before I post this as a favorite. Why? There are WAY too many mistakes to make it anything close to a 5 star read. Words are incorrectly placed, such as field instead of filled.

Octavia repeats herself over and over her dislike of violence because she's vegetarian. Okay, great. She's vegetarian, and she hates violence, but she kills in defense and in the games, and she thinks about it, and then does it again. But she hates violence and she's vegetarian.

Octavia Alexander is a Librarian, and a little more. She has an ability to use playing cards to her advantage. She can use them to heal, protect and even kill. One day, she is minding her own business when four large sexy, yes she took the time to look, masked men after her. She does not know what they want, just that what ever she throws at them they deflect. Taken, she is transported back in time. There she finally see's the men's faces, and she is shocked to learn it is her childhood best friends, Raiden, Cobalt, Nevada and Azar, who one day just disappeared and broke her heart. What did they want with her? How did they break through her magic? Time Travel, the librarian in her so happy to be here, Really!! And since when did her guys become so dangerously hot?!!!

I am giving Dragon Gladiators a 4.5. I enjoyed the main character Octavia so very much. She has such funny dialogues with herself. We all talk to ourselves, and her conversations had me cracking up. There was a couple times she got on my nerves, but it was understandable. It was not enough to make me dislike her at all, or take away from the story. Tavia is funny, strong, spunky, and will become a fierce Gladiatrix. When she is first taken, she learns that her captors are her childhood friends. She also learns that she has traveled back in time, the nerd in her loves this, and that her friends are dragons. Each with their own ability. Raiden a lighting dragon, Cobalt a metal dragon, Nevada a Ice dragon and Azar a fire dragon. They had to disappear because the powers that be created Dragon Gladiator Games in order to control their numbers. You have to win a 1,000 games to be free. The guys had to have a fifth and since she had magic she would be chosen either by them or another team. They of course want her on their team. But there is danger to the group that only has 11 more battles to win. Not only can they die in the ring, they have to keep their eyes out for assassins. With precious little time, the group sets out to train Octavia with her new playing deck of cards. She is seriously going to be bada@@, and when she finally does get to fight. You are cheering her on, going you go girl! The guys are all hot, and alpha males. Each has a different personality that is exactly what she needs. They quickly fall back into their friendship with alittle more. After all they are not the same little boys that they used to be, they grew up. Struggling with the her attraction, after all how can she kick butt in the ring if she is checking out how huge the guys muscles are? The guys reveal a secret at the end, as to what she is to them really. There is also a pretty good cliffy, that will leave you going WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!!!! Good thing we don't have long to wait to find out. Overall I would definitely recommend Dragon Gladiators!!

Wow! What a pleasant surprise!

All I can say is Wow! I was not expecting such an incredible read when I took a chance on this book. I was drawn in by the cover, intrigued by the blurb (because how can you go wrong with a librarian, ancient Rome, and 4 sexy dragons?), and was immediately thrown into a fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride 2,000 years in the past. The world building is incredibly vivid and detailed, I truly felt like I was experiencing the culture along with Tavia, who has got to be one of my favorite heroines of all time. I felt an instant kinship with the snarky fellow book lover with an inappropriate sense of humor. I love the unique concept of her channeling magic through cards, it's something I've never heard of before and I eagerly ate up page after page to find out which cards did what! I can't wait till the next book to discover what other mysterious powers the cards hold. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how Tavia would utilize them in the tournament battles and Ms Stark did not disappoint. The arena fights were some of my favorite parts of the story, so creative! I couldn't wait to see the kind of opponents Tavia and her men would get pitted against and I can't wait to see what Ms Stark comes up with for the next book! And speaking of Tavia's men...*sigh* They are all so different but at the same time so perfect for her, I loved them all equally! The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the slow burn, I'm so ready for the fireworks in book 2! I have to say my favorite part of this book had to be the Pokemon references! They took me back to my childhood and had me cracking up every time...keep em coming Zara! And I'll definitely be coming back for more of this series

Ms. stark is a master storyteller and world builder here in Dragon Gladiators. I was drawn in by the cover and allure of something new! Wow was I right! I was certainly not expecting that level of brilliance. The imagery and character building were some of the best I have seen in a long time! Tavia is one of the best and most sarcastic heroines I have ever seen! She is witty and snarky with a major penchant for inappropriate sense of humor. I found it both endearing and hysterical! I loved that she also loved books! The setting being two thousand years a go and very similar to that of Pokemon or yugio. I thoroughly enjoyed every reference made by the author. I was kept on the edge of my seat wondering what powers the cards hold and what was going on with Tavia's men. I can not wait for book 2! I hope to get more answers with it!!

Ok book

So I liked the story. A few things bothered me though.
First of all the book needed A lot more editing stuff like the wrong word used or a sentence that doesn't make sense. It didn't bother me enough to stop reading but if that's something that gets to you be aware.
Also how they got there and how the bad guys are was not really explained. I mean yeah time travel but how? Something I would really like to see explained more in the next book.
Other than that the story was good. The MC's power of using playing cards for her power was original and in would love to see how she is able to get better.
I will be reading the next book in the series and would recommend by his one.

Loved the story

Great story, and I love how the heroine isn't coddled or babied. Not a lot of people put the heroine in that strong of a role and I'm thankful for it. I love the sass, the jokes and witty banter throughout the book, even when it would be inappropriate. My issues were only with the incorrect words being used, or the misspelled words. I want to say there was even a small part of a sentence missing at one point. It isn't hard to think of what was going to be said, or to correct the incorrect word in my head so it was more of an annoyance then anything and I still loved the story regardless.

3/5 stars... purely for the grammar :/ the story was other wise original and very enjoyable. But ruined by the writing. I found a lot of mistakes. One or two would be normal but several per chapter is just too many. I think it needed a once more professional go through before publishing.

Other wise I really loved the book! I loved the story and the characters. The ending is a little upsetting but that’s the point of a cliff hanger.

I am looking forward to more character reveals, and relationship exploring. Very keen to see how good Tavia gets with her cards and how ‘bad-ass’ she could be!

When in Rome...

Do as the dragons do! Loved the book. You could feel the heartbreak of Octavia losing her childhood friends and that shaping her future self. At first I thought she let the boys off the hook too easily after being kidnapped and brought to Ancient Rome to fight in dragon battles, but despite always being in the learning end of things, she was still smart and fierce. I loved the internal monologue and her inappropriate humor in tense situations. And Cobalt.... what are we going to do with him? Can’t wait for the next!

Pretty good

I'm very sorry, but the book was so poorly edited that it was jarring. Even the cool plot couldn't make up for it. I also wish the author hadn't ended the book with so many cliffhangers.

I would suggest the author rethink the way the book is written. I found the characters to be engaging and the premise was innovative.

This book has great potential. I'll try the next one to see if there's any improvement. Zara Stark is a good storyteller who has the potential to be great.

Great Story!

I really wanted to give this book a 5 star, but there were way too many editing problems. A lot of repeated words & phrases, misspelled words, and other little problems made me editing the book in my head as I read it. BUT! The story is really great! It’s unique and the characters are well written, so to me it’s definitely worth a read, and I’ll be looking forward to the next book!

Amazing. Gladiators, Dragons, and Witches. Oh my!

What a great step away from the norm. A librarian gets kidnapped and taken to ancient times to fight to the death. Along with a group of 4 dragons that used to be childhood friends she starts slowly using a power that she has had all her life to help them make it out of this alive. I wasn’t expecting the twist at the end. Great! Great! Great! More than ready for the next one.

I wanted to enjoy this book. It started out fun, a bit of action... I could overlook the spelling and grammar errors. Then a bit of action, nice. The heroine’s kind of a female ‘Gambit’ (X-Men), but ok.

Then came the major continuity errors. And the exposition dumps. Pages and pages of it.

I may try again in future, but this book needed an editor badly. It would be much improved, and I really would like to see that, as it does seem entertaining in its idea.

Interesting read!

So the story was fun. I liked the guys. Octavia was ok... She not only talked to herself too much, she kept repeating the same thing!! I kept waiting for her to just shut up so I could read what happens next.. Also there are so many type errors it was driving me nuts. Also I was disappointed with how much romance there wasn't!!!

A unique and fun read.

I really appreciated how different this book was from what I have experienced reading before. I am a very avid reader and this is something that was different enough to grab attention and keep it .it is different enough that you are not able to predict what is going to happen next. Can't wait for the next one.

Good story line

This story was good and it's something I haven't read yet. That being said some of the stuff repeated over and over kinda got to me. Why I gave it 3 stars. I still enjoyed it and plan to get the next one but I had to stop reading a few times just to keep from the repetitive stuff.

Octavia hasn't been the same since her for best friends just up and disappeared. So she figures out how to live life without them. It started off as a normal uneventful snow day at the library. Then everything got a little crazy when 4 guys dressed in gladiator outfits try to attack her. But Octavia has a few cards up her sleeve.

I loved the guys and for once we have a smart heroine and not a damsel in distress. She never once needs saving, she’s a badass on her own. I love the guys personalities too!!

This was a really good story and i hated when it ended because i wanted to keep reading! The only faults i had with this book was lack of good editing. There were a good many misspelled words and typos. Overall a good read and i look forward to the next in the series.

Decent story with different kind of heroine.

Octavia's magic is done with playing cards. I enjoyed the story, but the editing is terrible. I don't know if it's just the kindle version, but it's literally riddled with errors.

Good Story

This book was a delightful read. Unfortunately I couldn't give it above a 4 star rating. The spelling and typing errors where horrible. Hopefully before the next book comes out the author will have a better proof reader.
