A Life Made of Lava

Rate this book
Evie Danvers has three beautiful, if slightly out of control, children; a stray cat named Dr. Moxley and a best friend who drinks unapologetically at 9 a.m. Evie also has stage four bone cancer and a gallows sense of humour that drives her husband, Nick, demented.

Nick wants Evie to fight. Evie, on the other hand, is almost ready to die. This is not Evie’s first rodeo. She kicked her cancer twice before. But this time around, Evie knows it’s a battle she can’t win. Instead, she focuses on avoiding her oncologist, playing wicked pranks on her mother-in-law and getting her affairs in order, which includes hiring a nanny to take care of the kids after she’s gone.

Having Julia Soanes in his house would not have been Nick’s first choice. Julia smells of memories. And sex. Something Nick hasn’t had in a while. Nick’s moral objections, however, are short-lived. The woman he loves is dying. He can honor her dying wish. Can’t he?

Phew! An emotional and exceptional story that will break your heart, but one told -as only Lissa Del can- with much depth and compassion. Highly recommend!

This book didn’t quite do it for me like I thought it would. Not one tear was shed.

I wish it had been longer. I wish I had gotten to know the characters more.

I wish I wish.

Maybe my expectations were too high because this author wrote one of my favorite books - Rainfall under the name Melissa Delport. That book blew my mind!

"The floor is lava!"
I loved this book - assuming that you are allowed to love a book about dying. It took a serious subject and filled it with wry humour and lovable characters.

Evie Danvers has already survived two rounds of treatment for her bone cancer, so when it reappeared for the third time, she knows her time is limited. She has a devoted husband and three young children, so this is not an easy decision. The way she goes about her preparation though, is impressive. I don't want to give too much away, this is a book you have to read.

I have given 5 stars for the book itself, if I were to rate the narration it would not be so high. The narrator reads well but makes no effort to distinguish between male and female voices and if you happen to have lost concentration at the opening of each chapter, you will have no idea whose voice you are listening to.

This is a realistic scenario, well handled, with a taste of wacky and crazy thrown in. Not to be missed.

Ian is treated as a piece of shit for being inlove with Evie, warning Nick about how inappropriate he and Julia is
BUT
Julia is treated as a fckin saint despite admitting that a part of her doesn’t feel wrong for causing Nick to cheat on Evie
AND
Nick is right. He doesn’t deserve Evie. At. All.

One of the authors with double fckin standards…. *sighs*

I am in the minority on this one and it could be the timing more than the book. I live in New England and the weather has been dreary for so long now that the last thing I needed was a sad book.

I liked it but never got hooked like everyone else did. I also had a real hard time with the narrator. I was concentrating on if it was really a person or a robotic type narration.

So, please read what others thought about the book and listen to a sample to see if the narration is okay for you.

Did you ever read a book that made you face your worst fears? Dying and leaving my husband and young children is one of my worst fears and this book tackles that fear with such beauty. Evie's zest for life as she slowly succumbs to her inevitable death is a thing of fictional beauty. Her antics and her experiences made me laugh, cry and made me hurt. Nick is my hero, I think every woman deserves a husband that loves and adores his wife the way that Nick loves Evie, and yet, he still manages to be so very human in his triumphs and his failures. I wanted to hate Julia, I really did, but I simply couldn't. Thrust, unfairly into an impossible situation, she fought to do the right thing while still loving a family that wasn't hers to love.

In the end, I believe Evie did what most of us would do. Or at least what I would do, given the opportunity, she looked out for her family in the most unselfish of ways. Attempting to ensure that they would be loved and cared for and that they would survive her death. I think every mother would try to do what Evie did, or at least I would, because of her love for her husband and her children. It's a thing of beauty!

OMG!!! Lissa does it again!!! This book was incredible. The story deals with every moms biggest fear but Lissa manages to do it in such a great way, if that is even possible! The characters compliment each other and even when you want to be angry with them you can’t. Absolutely loved the dynamics of the family, their relationship and Evies friendship with her BFF. Well done Lissa!

4.5 stars for me. Lovely book with really believable characters and situation. I loved the way that one minute I was laughing out loud and the next I was touched by the heartbreaking story plot. I really connected with the characters. Super read.

“Oh, and Nick,” I interrupt before he can build up momentum, “the floor’s lava.” For the infinitesimal space between heartbeats, I think he’s not going to react. It would be the first time in eighteen years and the flash of fear the thought induces almost brings me to my knees. Then, without another word, Nick leaps onto the kitchen counter, upending the cold pot of overboiled spaghetti and almost decapitating himself on the overhead pot rail. And I smile. Because it doesn’t matter if you’re dealing with shitty diapers, or a failing business, or even stage four bone cancer, when the floor’s lava, you get off it.”

Evie Danvers is a loving wife and doting mother of three children. Unfortunately she has Stage 4 bone cancer. This isn’t her first rodeo, however as she’s beaten it twice before. This time around is different as Evie knows it’s a battle she can’t win. Her devoted husband Nick is in denial and assumes she’s seeing her oncologist but the reality is that Evie has been avoiding her doctor. Instead she has resolved to get her affairs in order.

Her first course of action is to hire a nanny to help around the home with her children when the pain becomes too much. Following a string of unsuitable candidates, Evie chooses Julia Soanes who reminds her of herself. When Evie’s health worsens, Julia will prove to be a godsend in more ways than one..

You know that feeling... the one that tells you that this book is going to be amazing? I had that feeling after reading the first couple of pages. This was a warm, honest and life affirming read about love, even in the darkest of times. It was also my first introduction to the author. Told from three perspectives; Evie, Nick and Julia’s, the story centres around a woman diagnosed with cancer who realises she’s lost her battle but refuses to be defined by her disease.

The strength of the book lies in the utterly convincing, loveable, three dimensional characters that the author has gone at great lengths to portray. Each character seemingly complimenting the other. The family dynamics as well Evie’s enduring friendship with her best friend Kat, made for poignant reading.

Readers will instantly fall in love with Evie, for her wicked sense of humour and her outlook and zest for life. Her strength, indomitable spirit and sheer resolve to go out on her own terms will have you evaluating the important things in life.

Beautiful. Brilliant and utterly gut wrenching. This life affirming haunting read will hit readers right in the feels and stay with them long after the final page. And yes, I ugly cried..

I received an advanced free audible copy of A Life if Lava and I am voluntarily reviewing it. Lyn Devereaux’s narration was warm, clear and concise with excellent pacing. I felt that her voice was perfect for the tone of the novel.

I LOVED THIS STORY!!

I wasn't mad about the narrator, and that nearly put me off, but I sped it up to 1.45 and that made it much better. Still a slightly mechanical voice.

But oh, the story! I loved the love story it told between Nick and Evie without detailing it too explicitly and without going into the past too deeply, and also the friendship between Cat and Evie. To have a bond like that and to deal with the impending loss of it, I fought tears through most of the book in anticipation of what was coming.

I loved the style, loved the humour, all in all I really enjoyed the story! Warning: do not listen on your way to work in the morning, if you have meetings as soon as you arrive. I had huge red eyes and a runny nose yesterday when I arrived!

Audible version:
An utterly gut wrenching, laugh-out-loud, raw and honest book about a subject we all fear and dread and many have to face. I loved everything about it from the characters to the very clever way the author weaved this story of love and friendship and a zest for life to grip my heart.
The narrator's voice took some getting use to and it did help to speed it up, otherwise well narrated.

Beautifully poignant

This was such a beautiful read. I completely fell in love with the story and the characters. I love that Lissa Del jumps between the three main characters in the chapters, telling the story form each of their perspectives respectively. Death and cancer are not easy topics to talk about but A Life Made of Lava tackles these topics in such a poignant way. Know now that you will cry, even if you think you know what is coming...

This was a tough book to get through because of the subject matter. The book was well written and narrated well too. I loved Evie’s idea of making sure that Nick would be okay in the end. I loved the fact that Evie had a strong support system and people who loved her. This book was chalk full of love, anger, and laughter in between. It cut at my heart strings to see Nick, Evie, Jessie, Julia, and Cat suffering in silence. Contemporary fiction is not my go to genre but I really loved this audiobook. I would definitely recommend it.

MY single worry when I started this book was not that I would Kim Kardashian ugly cry, but that I wouldn’t connect with the characters on a fundamental level, due to my single, childless self.

Let me put your mind at ease – you will form strong bonds with the characters and are sure to have leaky-eye syndrome more than once before the end.

Evie is a strong-willed, down-to-earth, no-nonsense mom and is absolutely and irrevocably adored by her three children and her husband, Nick.

Her time on this earth is coming to a close as she faces her third battle with cancer – a fight she knows she will not be able to win.

She enlists a nanny to help around the home with her children on the days where the pain becomes too much to bear, even cooking a meal takes its toll on the doting mother.

Her eldest child, Jesse, can tell something is wrong and has thrown up a wall of anger to protect himself from the the tides of pain ready to rush forward.

Even knowing the outcome of the story from the get-go you would think there would be no surprises along the way.

There are. You will absolutely fall in love with Evie, her delightful family, friends and even the nanny.

There is no black and white here, the lines will become blurred as you enter grey territory and picking sides isn’t nearly as simple as one would think.

A Life Made of Lava has a wonderful level of depth, a touch of humour and a punch-in-the-gut realness that is sure to connect with many readers, whether you are a fan of contemporary romance of not.

Looking for characters that are instantly likeable? This book is for you. A story that will draw you in from the very beginning? This book is for you. One that will make you face your worse fears? Jip, you guessed it, this one is for you.

Meet Evie Danvers, mother to three slightly out of control children, a stray cat that is named after her doctor, and a best friend most people can only dream of. Evie also has stage four bone cancer.

I adored Evie’s sense of humour, from making jokes about her own demise to pranking her mother-in-law. Evie hires a nanny, who she ensures will be perfect for the family, especially after she is gone.

As always Lissa Del knows how to spin a story in such a way that it draws you in from the first page, right through to the last, this one is no exception. You are guaranteed to laugh and cry with the characters.

Kindle review 2018:
Beautifully heartbreaking! As a mother, and step-mother to two daughters who lost their mom to cancer this was an incredibly emotional read for me. I love the strength and love of life of the mom, and the reality and humor somehow maintained on this roller coaster ride of a story.

Audio book review 2019:
This story hurts for me, as I'm a step-mom to two daughters who lost their mother to cancer at a young age (6/10) just 4 years ago. It wasn't as emotional for me this time, whether it was due to Audiobook or having read it last year, I'm not sure why. The audiobook is very well performed. This story will make you want to be a better mom.

This book will stay in your mind for a long time

I have so many feelings. This book is happiness in every form. Even sadness can evolve into a new form of happiness.
Cancer is just the most evil thing on this planet. Most of us have had to experience the pain caused by cancer. This story deals with that, but also with the strength found in human spirits.
Ms. Del creates characters you can understand. They are honest and relatable. They become your friends.
If you are looking for a book that will not leave your thoughts, which will make you laugh while simultaneously crying, then you will enjoy this one!

I really enjoyed this book. At the start I found the narrator to be a bit slow but once I sped up the reading pace it got better. It was a really heartfelt read, one where it makes you believe in true love. Thank you to Melissa Delport for allowing me to review this audible for her. The cover is gorgeous, the characters are relatable and it had a mix of sadness and joy attached to it. Lovely!

This story is simply beautiful. At times laugh-out-loud hilarious, at times heartbreakingly sad, it gets right down in the feels. Nick and Evie Danvers, their family, Julia and all the supporting cast - perhaps with a few exceptions - got inside my mind and took up residence. This is a story I won't forget for a good long while.

I really enjoyed the Audible version of this book - all the characters were relatable and genuinely human, and thanks to that I became quite invested in the story - I wish they were real so they could be my friends (and family) too. It was a lovely story with some happy parts and some sad parts - overall I enjoyed the story very much and I can definitely recommend this book.

This such a gut-wrenchingly beautiful, sad, lovely and amazing book! It made me think about what I would do in this instance, if I would do what I did when I was previously ill or what I've since considered about it.

I thought this was going to be some kind of melancholic book because it's about a girl with cancer, except it's not. Throughout the reading, I found out that it is about so much more than just the disease. It's about love, friendship, and family.

The floor isn’t lava – it’s quicksand, impossible to escape and collapsing beneath me.

Evie has stage four bone cancer and she's dying. Nick is the devoting husband that refuses to accept the diagnosis and wants to fight a non-existent battle against cancer, but there's actually nothing to be done. Right now the only thing left to do is to make Evie as comfortable as possible and be with her.
The three kids don't actually understand the whole situation.
Kat is Evie's best friend, just willing to be there for her and make her laugh.
Julia is picked up by Evie herself to be the nanny, but that's not only what Evie hopes her to be when she's gone.

I really like the story. I just wish the epilog was a little longer and detailed.

“Oh, and Nick,” I interrupt before he can build up momentum, “the floor’s lava.” For the infinitesimal space between heartbeats, I think he’s not going to react. It would be the first time in eighteen years and the flash of fear the thought induces almost brings me to my knees. Evie is battling cancer, but she's doing it her way. Her disease does not define her. Her positive attitude and fun loving spirit shines thru in this story . She knows this time around , she's lost her battle. She won't let that keep her from enjoying her life and family,. She knows they will need help after she's gone. The nanny search is on. She wants the perfect person that will bond with them..
Here comes Julia, a strong young woman, that stole the familys heart. Evie sees the same fun loving spirit that she has, by finishing the interview with the game , the Floor is Lava.
Then there's her husband Nick. He doesn't want to come to terms that this may be her last bout with her cancer. He wants her to continue to fight for her life.
Lissa Del poignant story is about finding inner strength when there is no more hope. This is not a typical depressing story about a woman dying from cancer. theres fun laughter, emotions and tears.
Lynn Devereux tells the story with so much love, emotion and compassion. She captures the personality of each character perfectly.I was gifted this audio book and offered my honest review

This is an audible review.

My heart is broken. At least at times it seemed like it would break, whilst listening to this book. A heart-wrenching tale of the one thing we can all be sure of, no matter how it comes our way.
Listened to this one at every opportunity and it didn’t disappoint. I cried, I laughed, I hoped...
The narration lacked lustre at times, as it was quite monotone for me. Just not my preferred style. Nonetheless, it didn’t detract from story and the selfless human being that is Evie, although I’m not convinced the treatment of her mother-in-law was entirely justified. However, I’m willing to forgive her on this occasion as I get back to the premise of the story. I’m not sure I’d be able to be that selfless. I’d like to think I would; not so sure I could.
A beautiful, contemplative tale. Would read or listen to more from this author.

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟, I stayed away from this kind of book, I'm a HEAholic, but Bibi loved it and after reading several reviews, I decided to check it out as it was available on KU. After the first few pages, I bought the book for USD4.99.
Ladies and gents, read this book. It had some safety issues but the author was a genius, a damn magician!
I loved all the imperfections in her characters, they will stay with me for a long time.
Here a line to lure you guys/gals in.

Lissa Del has managed to perfectly convey the emotions of her characters in A Life Made of Lava. I laughed, I cried (a lot of crying), I celebrated and I mourned with the characters. I am a huge fan of Lissa / Melissa and she has truly outdone herself this time. I felt like I was Evie and my husband was Nick – I couldn’t read more than a few chapters at a time without putting the book down for a break I was sobbing so much (be warned – DO NOT read this book in public). A Life Made of Lava is written from the perspective of several characters and is done in such a seamless way that it perfectly gives you insight into each of their emotions and motives throughout the story. This book will give you all the feels.

This is an incredibly heart wrenching book, full of emotion and real life as well as friendship, love and devotion . Super well written which is just as well because the narrator didn’t do a very good job in my opinion. OK, so back to the story itself, oh boy, it is fantastic, the characters are so real and human, I did get it though, why Evie was looking for the perfect nanny fairly early on in the book!!! But that didn’t spoil it for me in the least.

The cover is stunning, as is the title.

I was given a copy of the audio book in exchange for a review.
