Toenails Glidewell fought in the Gulf War, and he came home to Maine wounded by the things he had done and seen. Like a lot of vets, he drifted, and had trouble holding jobs and forming meaningful relationships. His wartime buddy, Pronto, suffered from the same afflictions, only worse. Unknown to him, a few members of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee were feeling increasing frustration about the growing threat of terrorism within the U.S. Entrusted with the nation’s secrets, but unable to reveal them or talk about them publicly, they knew the threat was much greater than anyone knew. It seemed to some committee members that the threat to the nation’s security was growing every week, but that traditional law enforcement did not have the tools to control it. They began looking for help. They found it in secret military intelligence files – military and former military personnel with unique counter-terrorism training. People with the ability to smell terrorists and kill them, just as easily as they could sniff out hidden explosives. People like Toenails Glidewell. One of Maine’s two senators served on the Intelligence Committee, and his eyes were drawn to Glidewell’s file. He lived a biker lifestyle. He didn’t have a steady job. He was divorced. He lived alone. Outside of a few alcohol-related scrapes with the law, his record was clean. And he knew how to kill people. He was an unremarkable man with some remarkable skills. One step this side of a drifter. Someone who wouldn’t be much missed if he died. Senator Bartlett picked up the phone and arranged a meeting. With that, Toenails Glidewell morphed from itinerant biker to well-paid assassin. With that, Toenails Glidewell found his calling. In this case, Toenails is called upon to find and kill a southwestern Indian who has blended into Maine’s Nicotou Indian tribe in order to smuggle Chechen terrorists across the Canadian border. To do it, he and Pronto move into a boarding house in Forest City, a town that once straddled the Maine-New Brunswick border but which in recent years had been torn in two by the so-called war on drugs. Along the way, they help repair a Forest City romance that fell apart 30 years before over a broken dinner date, and Toenails tries to be a father to his son.
Toenails is a former veteran with special skills. He is also a biker riding a wide glide Harley. There are those in our government who would like to use him and his friend Pronto to do things that are definitely against civilized rules. But, you still find yourself smiling and liking the guy.
