Subtle Deceit - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Only child Evanna Blanchard has gone missing and the police seem inept or unwilling to accept there's anything wrong, just a college girl rebelling against her rich parents' authority. PI Phil Porter is called in on the case and promised a double-size fee if he locates her within 24 hours. Heading for the women's sorority house on campus Porter questions Evanna's room-mate Katie, before heading to the fraternity house where Evanna may be with her latest beau, Jamie. A tense face-off with its president Todd and his pals leads to a dead-end, but Porter gets a home address for Jamie and heads off to stake it out.

Who does Porter meet outside Jamie's residence? What relationship do they have to Jamie?
How does Porter locate Jamie and what evidence about his relationship with Evanna comes out?
What did Todd have to do with Evanna? What did he tell his parents about her?
What happens when Porter questions them? What was Evanna hiding from her strict parents?

The truth plays a cat-and-mouse game in this tense crime thriller by R A McGee, revealing parts of itself and retreating when Porter gets closer to it. With realistic characters and an imaginative plot it's a must for murder-mystery fans that will keep the reader guessing right until the last page!

I like reading action and police drama and police procedurals. English cops and CSI's are great as well.
One very good writer of the bad guy who does good genre is RA McGee. Good hard core action with a fast thinking, tough talking and really a nasty demeanor story lead is McGee's forte. Love the work, love the consistency. If you looking for a constant in your reading this is it.

Subtle Deceit is a sharp novella that is sure to sharpen your appetite for action. Phil Porter is you new tough guy. Not old, not young, but very wise. Knows the streets and knows how to get his information. Sit down, fix a snack. Start to read. You will enjoy this. I did.

POINT OF TRANSPARENCY : I was given access to this book as an advanced reviewer. I have had no payment nor future promise and it did not change my review of the book.

Good mystery novella that keeps you guessing to the very end. I enjoyed following the freelance detective named Porter as he searched for a missing college student. The author jumps right into the action with his rough and tumble main character. Porter is not your typical straight lace cop but more like a big thug who gets results and follows his own code of ethics. Overall, I enjoyed the book. Many will probably enjoy the rough street language involving curse words and slang. I prefer books with a little less R-rated language, but respected the authors descriptive use of street slang.
Disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book for giving my honest review.

Phil Porter had been a federal agent who now searches for missing persons. He does not do it for glory, to feel good or because he has the skills and is successful at find missing people. He does it if the reward is sufficient. And he does what he needs to do – not necessarily by the book.

This time there is a case that offers a sufficient reward to find a co-ed who has disappeared. Unexpectedly the distraught father offers Porter double the award if he can find the girl in 24-hours. He deals with frat boys, ex-boyfriends, and a nasty crime boss.

This suspense-thriller has twists and turns, brutal action, and plenty of characters.

I take Porter to be someone that goes around making his money by finding missing persons, and getting the offered reward money. Great read and awesome believable characters! Great ending I didn't think it was who it was that made Evanna disappear! That was a surprise, yet had a good feeling it was that person. Totally good job. Great flow! Very entertaining, read in about 2 hours non stop page turning. Totally recommend this book for a good suspense of who done it and where is the Missing person. Well done, bravo McGee! Received an ARC of this book and voluntarily leave my unbiased review.

As always, Porter never disappoints and he's never boring! Brains, brawn, bullets, bad guys,...

I loved this novella! Some authors seem convinced they need to write a long book, drawing out a story ad nauseum..Thankfully R.A. McRee isn't one of them. Novellas are also a quick way to get hooked on an author.

In typical Porter fashion, folks are either gravely injured or due in his search for the missing. After three novels (#1-3 in the series), a novelette and a novella, I’m going to have to take a break from his mindset before it infects my own thinking. Again, good read for fans of Dirty Harry, Death Wish, Taken, etc.

An entertaining novella about an ex-federal agent turned PI. Backstory isn't clear, but interesting character that is well developed and likable. Thought the plot was predictable, but surprised me at the end. I won't comment on that. Cleanly edited and well written.

I totally enjoyed this fast paced novella. I personally have no problem with an aggressive character who gets things done. Looking forward to the next book in this series. Please don't change him into a wishy washy drip as so many writers do.

Being a private investigator is not for the timid. People are not always cooperative or truthful, and it takes a discerning person who can handle themselves if the situation turns violent. And getting paid for your work sometimes requires some creativeness as well.

Fast read

Great details. You can almost taste, smell and hear the action in this book. Lost some sleep getting to the end of this one. Love Porter. Ross is the greatest best friend. Missed Trish. Holding out for a happily ever after with Porter and Trish.

R.A. McGee's novella, _Subtle_Deceit_, is a delight for those of us who appreciate excellent grammar and engaging prose that describes everything — action; characters; conditions; emotions; events; every significant part of the story — clearly yet succinctly, never getting in the way of the unfolding of the story. thanks

His descriptions of the weather and scenery remind me of some of Dean Koontz' notable works; and his preparation and action sequences are done like Connelly and Connolly do: fully plausible if not totally accurate.

However… yes, this isn't a rose garden; McGee gave this reader _several_ very unpleasant surprises, and the denouement was a shock; I still cringe when I think of it. That's all the warning I can give you without…
