Kylie Berry Mysteries #2

A Berry Murderous Kitten

Rate this book
Welcome to Sarah’s Eatery: serving hot breakfast daily, with complimentary curbside murder!
When Cameron Caldwell, infamously bad waiter and known womanizer, is found dead on the doorstep of Sarah’s Eatery, new owner Kylie Berry yet again becomes the talk of the town.

After very publically rejecting Cam’s amorous advances the day before his death, Zoey Jin, Kylie’s regular customer and fledgling best friend, becomes the prime suspect in his murder. To complicate matters, Zoey’s estranged ex, Max, breezes back into town to exonerate the woman he not long ago abandoned…

"Winters will have you giggling into your book!"
Is Zoey, who stuck by Kylie thick-and-thin, truly capable of killing Cam? Was the killer a slighted customer, or a heartbroken woman on his path of emotional destruction? A jealous boyfriend whose girl he stole blazing that path?

Kylie learns the basics of the kitchen, while she and Zoey, with some help from her kitten, Sage, sift through the facts to learn the truth about Cam’s murder!

A Berry Murderous Kitten is the second book in the Kylie Berry Mystery Series. Though it can be read as a standalone, it's best read in series order.

This is a laugh-out-loud cozy mystery featuring a strong female protagonist, some unusual friends and family, and a mystery that needs solving! It has no graphic gore, bad language or sex.

This is the second book of the 'Kylie Berry Mysteries'. This is a cozy mystery with the pov from the protagonist. She owns a restaurant, yet she is not able to cook hardly any edible food. Cousin Sarah had presented the penniless Kylie with an agreement to purchase the restaurant, Sarah's Eatery, along with ownership of the entire block. Unfortunately, the chef quit as soon as Kylie took over and yet, Kylie is not able to cook hardly any edible food. She has a generous patron, a police detective and possible love interest, that is providing her with lessons on how to cook eggs. He generously makes the coffee every morning for the early patrons. So, to bring in some income and not waste her efforts, she created an 'Ooops board' for meals that were not worthy of the full price, at a discount. Yet, she somehow has regular patrons that pay to eat these unappealing meals. Patrons regularly test out the food, especially on the Oops Menu, just for kicks. Her ex-Aunt-in-law hates her profusely and has spread ugly rumors to keep people away from her newly acquired restaurant. This aspect baffles me beyond belief. Why would people that obviously have the ability to cook their own meals, take a chance on this woman's horrific attempts at making an edible dish?

The mystery begins when Zoey has an altercation with an overzealous man, whom she had zap with a stun gun, to defend herself from his amorous advances. He staggered away on his own but was found outside the restaurant doors the next morning dead. Zoey was the main suspect for this murder. Kylie and Zoey team up together again to investigate.

I decided I want to complete this light series, even though I was undecided about the decision after completing the first installment. I liked it, but just didn't love it I enjoy humor tremendously and really hoped to find that in this series. It lacks the depth of humor and wit I crave. The biggest deterrent is a restaurant owner that cannot cook, though she does work tirelessly to make sure there is something to serve. Another offense is the grammatical errors creeping in. However, the quirky characters, the twist, and turns in the plot, the interactions between the members of the community, and the camaraderie within the restaurant enticed me to get better acquainted this anycast more fully. True to cozy mystery formula, the heroine and her trusty side-kick, Zoey, are investigating the case in order to clear Zoey's name this time. Will they succeed? With all her duties at the restaurant, it makes you wonder where she finds the time they pour into their questioning for other means, motives, and/or opportunities to have committed the murder.

All in all, this is a CLEAN mystery, that is able to stand on its own, and concludes with an H.E.A. regarding solving the murder mystery. However, it will make more sense if the series is read in order.

So much fun

A laugh a minute with this amateur sleuth. Kylie is the owner of a restaurant thanks to a generous relative but she is a horrible cook. Her best friend Zoey has been accused of murdering the town sleezeball and Kylie is determined to help her clear her name.

Kylie is slowly starting to settle into life in Camden Falls, even though half of the town still think she's a murderer by poisoned brownies (I mean, sure, she and her new best-pal Zoey discovered that Kylie was in fact NOT the killer in A Berry Deadly Welcome, but when it comes to town gossip, that's neither here nor there. Kylie is still learning how to cook; she's almost mastered eggs, but is taking advantage of her inability to cook by creating an Oops Board; where she sells her poorly (but edible, and most definitely not poisoned) food at a discounted price. This is bringing in a series of regular customers, but I think that Camden Falls has the kind of residents who will support local business when they can, and who can stop a good egg (I mean Kylie, not the eggs she ... murders).

So, in this book, we learn a little bit more about Zoey. She's an independent woman, an IT whiz, and is stylish as heck. I think she'd be perfect as a Charlie's Angel, though I can't imagine she'd answer to Charlie or Bosley or any other male, except maybe Max. Max is Zoey's ex who ghosted her (this was explored quite heavily in A Berry Deadly Welcome). Max arrives back in town (even though he'd actually been in town for quite a while, as discovered by Kylie), and begs Zoey to take him back. He pulls out all the tricks; flowers, her favourite food, promises of a good life together. Zoey is standoffish at best, and Kylie has alarm bells going off in her head ... red flags are popping up everywhere, though she's mostly convinced that it's because her ex-husband Dan is borderline narcissistic, and Max is giving of the same kind of vibes.

Cam, a guy who nobody seemed to like, is killed pretty early on in the story, and his body is left on the doorstep of Kylie's cafe. So, that's body number two in what seems as many weeks, and Kylie is once again thrust into the spotlight; the town folk think she's now a murder of TWO people, yet still, she has her regulars at the cafe. This time Zoey is suspect number one, so Kylie and Zoe work together to prove her innocence, and they make quite the team!

I'm really enjoying this series so far. I love the character of Kylie. She's independent but is not afraid to ask for help or admit defeat. She's determined and smart, so she's an excellent crime solver. She's loving and caring and is curious, so she's perfect at running the cafe. She just needs to learn how to cook!

Fast-paced cozy mystery. A development of Kylie and Joeys' friendship while proving their innocence of murder. The various fun and diverse characters of Camden Falls, Kentucky. The antics of our lady sleuths. And our hero kitty Sage makes this an enjoyable read. This book didn't have the errors in the previous book. My only complaint is it is past time to hire a cook. A keeper.

I really wanted to enjoy this book. I am a big fan of other series by A.R. Winters. I struggled through the first book in this series but decided to give the second a chance. This is a cozy mystery and that usually means that there is a certain amount of silly behavior and plot. However, everything about this premise is ridiculous and there is only so much suspense of belief that I can muster in able to finish a book. The cafe would never remain in business considering there is no real menu or decent food served (even if it seems like it is minimally improving), no matter how small a town. And I do not believe that Kylie is vested in making the restaurant a success as the amount of effort she puts into it is very small. The way that she talked to suspects was also painful to read. She came across as a bully. I am sad to say that I found myself more annoyed while reading this book than enjoying it. I will continue to read other series by A.R. Winters but will be giving future books in this series a pass.

This was just okay for me. I know that the whole "I don't know how to cook, but I own a restaurant" thing is wearing a little thin. I don't know of anyone that is an adult that could possibly be that bad of a cook, and refuse to address it. I'm not quite sure why people still go to her restaurant. I liked that this book focused on Zoey more, she's probably my favorite character. I was a little surprised by the turn of events in this one. I think Sage stole the show. I'm not feeling the whole love triangle between Brad, Joel and Kylie either. I will probably give the next one in this series a chance, hopefully someone steps in to save Kylie from herself.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.

Solid 4.5 star
Book 2 keeps up the fun, mystery and entertainment like the first and now we find not Kylie but Zoey with all eyes on her when someone else turns up dead, well actually there are some eyes also on Kylie just because of her track record since arriving in town. There were definitely more twists and suspects to run through but with who Cameron was it was entirely expected and I just loved how we got to know Kylie's friends more especially Zoey who is more than just the quiet sad girl. You will be taken back by her the killer is but even more so on what else is discovered and who confessed to something else!!

Tiny But Mighty!

Things have not really changed for poor Kylie. She still has her cafe, but very little to serve. I love her Oops Board! While she has proven that she is a terrible cook, she does seem to have a talent for solving murders! This time she literally trips over the victim. The main suspect is eccentric bff Zoey. Lots of action as the two investigate the murder. So many suspects! But just when things are the bleakest help arrives in so many ways. A very enjoyable mystery.

Irritating!!!!! Nobody is this ignorant of cooking. I mean you pick a shell out of an egg and once you burn toast you know how to turn the toaster down. I mean really!!!!! Then not to buy a towel to dry off but run around naked drying off. While the mysteries could be fun and characters are really very interesting the main character if just plain irritating. How the heck she turned her husbands company into a success but can’t do her own also makes a woman look inept. I don’t think I can continue the series

Winters/a berry murderous kitten

I love the new Kylie berry mystery series. Kylie is a divorcee starting over again in a town in ky. Taking over her cousin eatery. The problem is she cannot cook ,but she has her quirky friends, and two guys who likes her and She finds herself involved in murder one way or another. Very entertaining , with a different twist to murder mystery. Love winters style of writing, never dissappoint.

This series is still ok to read.
This book had much less grammar errors. Which I am so happy about. The storyline is still kinda blah but was better than the first one. Plus it can keep you entertained if you like just a fluff read.
I’ll still read the 3rd one in the series and see if they get any better since the books seem be about 2 weeks apart if we have some character growth it may be worth it to read more.

A blast from the Past

A Berry Murderous Kitten is a hard to put down mystery. When a dead body is put in front of Kylie’s restaurant, her friend is the suspect. This book is humorous and keeps the reader guessing until the end with a true twist at the end. The only downfall that can be seen is after the suspension it goes to the next day leaving the reader wanting a tiny bit more.

Fun Read

Kylie is fun and developing some quirky habits. Hope she continues to grow. Really enjoy Zoey. A little twist at the end. I am a bit confused about the explanation of how it happened. It seems to contradict itself. Worth reading and I’ll be moving on to the next in the series.

Very much enjoyed this book

This is the second book I've read by the author. I really like her character development. The characters are likeable, you want to know more about them as you root for them to succeed. The book was fast paced, easy to read and just plain enjoyable. Grab some hot chocolate, a soft blankie, and get ready for a cozy mystery. Enjoy.

Fast, engagingly, and entertaining read. It has been awhile since I read the first book but it only took a few pages to get back into all of the characters. Even better it was done in a way where you didn’t have to read the first book nor did it repeat but added layers of info that could stand in their own or add to previous knowledge. Well done and I look forward to the series.

Love the story, love the characters

But this author needs a proofreader. There are so many distracting mistakes...words left out, extra words in, poor editing. I will continue to read the stories, but those things should be taken care of. I’ll be your proofreader if you need one.

A Fun Read

This was an enjoyable read. It was full of good clean fun and stayed away from the raunchy sex stuff. There was good character build up and I loved the addition of a cat (everybody uses dogs). If you're looking for an entertaining "clean" read, this ones for you!

Good Wet Afternoon Read

Yes, it's raining, but I still would have sat all day and read A Berry Murderous Kitten. Solid plot, though I still wonder how she is keeping the safe going. Delightful characters and good dialogue.
