To Buy a Vow

What if we could buy a vow to right our wrongs?

For Nedra Phillips, the strain of portraying a strong Black woman to outsiders is finally taking its toll on her. Her marriage to her college sweetheart has begun to fizzle out, with conversations dwindling down to nothing and intimacy becoming sporadic at best. Unwilling to endure the stigma of being a 30-something divorcee, she does everything in her power to hold onto her marriage, but Chris isn't just on a different page, he's in a whole other book entirely. Despite their disconnect, her vows meant something to her and marriage is supposed to be forever. When all seems lost, she makes a last-ditch effort in hopes of generating results, but what exactly does a Hail Mary look like between friends and lovers?

Jermaine Hawkins is nearing the end of a prominent career playing professional basketball and is ready to put his retirement plan into action. That plan includes many things but most important on the list is putting an end to his status as a hermit and starting a family. A chance encounter with a firecracker of a woman makes him think he's found his capital F. But whether that F is for "future" or "frustrating" is to be determined. Can Jermaine convince Nedra that everything happens for a reason while also getting her to give him a chance at something real?

I absolutely loved To Buy a Vow! This was such a heartwarming love story. It pulls you in from page one. I want to say Chris did Nedra dirty but, he really didn't. I understand why he asked for a divorced but, the way he went about it was all kinds of wrong. He definitely should've handled that better. But, as the old saying goes, when one door closes another one opens. Jermaine was the Mr. Right for Nedra. They were perfect for one another. While the book was great, the narrator was horrible. It was narrated by Denise Wallace which, I found out is a pseudonym for Machelle Williams. She narrated a book I listened to a few months ago and I said then I would NEVER bye another book narrated by her. To say I was pissed off when I found out who she was is an understatement. I had no idea narrators performed under pseudonyms. Ugh! Anywho, this book was black romance personified. I can't wait to read the other books in this series.

The bar was set really high for me with Book 1 l: To Buy A Vow. One of those stories that prove that marriage doesn't always end because of infidelity or betrayal but someone you just aren't on the same frequency and that's exactly the case with Chris and Nedra, the way in which Chris did it was definitely a douche move but ye chose to be the bad guy without discussing it with his partner. But look at Nedra picking herself up or was it Jermaine picking her up and reminding her that she deserves a love that's just refreshing and everything she needed and more, what a crème de la crème of story telling. Looking forward to this whole series now.

Marriage is hard and sometimes it just don’t work out but there is a way to dissolve your marriage with some grace. Unfortunately Nedra’s husband Chris failed on this.

In this read we met Nedra Phillips - a gun enthusiast - who is married at the beginning of the read. She is mad and confused as to why her life is going the way it is when she meets our hero. Our hero, Jermaine Hawkins - is an NBA star at a crossroads in his career.

In this read I felt the pain of Nedra coming off of the page. It was a painful but realistic view of a breaking down of a marriage in the beginning of the read. So realistic as a read you have a sense of relief when she “snaps” out of the fight for her marriage stage she was in. I think it is fair to say that I despise Chris. He was selfish in the handling of intimate moments with Nedra. I was very satisfied with the “sonning” that Jermaine gave out to him in the end.

I loved how in touch Jermaine was with his feelings and what the universe is showing him. I especially loved the thought surrounding rebounds. The spicy scene was good, I do wish we could have got some more relationship building being played out on the page. There was a lot of use of the eye description of everyone having “Amber'' and Jermaine sounded a bit too “hotepy” with the nickname “goddess.” 3 Stars

This book was extra light on the romance. It was just nothing but sex between Nedra and Jermaine so them being together as a couple made zero sense for me. When did they actually fall for each other? Was it at the club or was after they had sex and they both realized that they didn't use protection? Make it make sense.

Too much time was spent on Nedra trying to deal with her divorce and very little time was spent on Nedra building a relationship with Jermaine. The author literally did a "and 6 weeks later" to show that Nedra and Jermaine had been seeing each other. WTF?! How am I supposed to root for the couple if I don't see them falling in love?

The title of the book is misleading. There was no declaration of love. Just a declaration of "you're stuck with me forever". Whatever.

Very good

This was a super sweet read, I only wish that it had been longer. There was a lot to unpack and while it was definitely well written, I feel that Nedra and Jermaine deserved more development.

This author is a new favorite of mine, but this book didn’t quite hit for me. As usual, I liked the writing and the characters, but the pacing felt off to me. We only get to really see the MCs together for the last 25ish%. To me, the middle of the book dragged a bit and then at the end it felt rushed. (There’s also a trope at the end that I generally dislike.)

Very good read, and my first from the author! I only wish the two leads had more time together during the story. Several chapters went by before they even met. And I felt like that could have been time spent cultivating their relationship. I know the heroine was going thru the end of her marriage and a divorce. But maybe a time lapse, just so we could get more of Nedra and Jermaine together...would have given us more time with the beautiful couple! That, along with a few minor editing issues, is why I didn't give it a full 5 stars. But I would say it was 4.5 stars to be exact!

Loved this story!

I loved this story so much! The fact that Chris loved Nedra enough to set her free when he knew she wouldn’t leave was admirable. And I just love Jermaine for her. I can’t wait for an update on them.

Re-Giving yourself

I was expecting a totally different story from what I read, yet it was good nonetheless.

Nedra was definitely naive to her marriage downs and was so comfortable with just going through the motions that it was very sad once all the details started to come out. Chris was such a simp for even marrying Nedra, knowing he didn't fully love her enough to NOT be pushed by his parents, to just marry her because of him being truly in love with her, and not because they insisted he do it. I loved that Nedra valued her vows, yet hated that she felt she needed to be the one to "save" her marriage when she wasn't sure what it was she needed to do or what she was truly trying to save or salvage. Chris was so wrong for dropping that he'd already filed for divorce after what they'd just shared. I'm glad Nedra truly had time to think and reflect on her marriage and see that there really wasn't anything there after all.

I thought Chris' sister and one of Nedras best friends, Ashton, was going to take her brothers side, yet I'm glad she went so hard for her 'sister' friend they way she did, ultimately leading Nedra to her (possibly) happily ever after.

Jermaine 'Hawk' Hawkins, Mr. NBA, all around nice guy and hermit, was just what the doctor ordered for Nedra. Love at first sight is something I've always adored and I love that he went after Nedra without being too stuffy or pushy about it. He was a gentleman and honest and direct. His family being so loving was a huge bonus. I loved that his mom was a twin and how close they were. That didn't even dawn on me once he and Nedra were at their appointment, but duh 🤦🏾‍♀️😁. I loved how he dealt with Chris, Nedras ex, even when he was "fan-girling' the way he was 🙄🤦🏾‍♀️🥴. That was awkward, yet I was surprised at how honest Chris was with Jermaine about how he'd messed up with Nedra.

As stated, I was kind of expecting a totally different story, yet this was really good. Started out a bit slow for me, but once it picked up, it was full steam ahead. I wasn't to sure if I'd finish the series, now I'm curious, so let me buy the rest of the books and get to it.

Really good read.

Good story

I really liked Jermaine. Getting to his part of the story could've been quicker. Chris, I definitely did not understand him. He needed to be slapped. Nedra's marriage was a lesson, a lesson in finding the one you were meant to be with instead of the one you're familiar with.

Literally read like a movie!

This book was so good! It was such a sweet slice burn! I enjoyed every single character introduced in this story. Chencia really knows how to write a great family dynamic. I can't wait to read more. I'm so happy everything worked out perfectly at the end. Not sure how I feel about Chris though.

When a relationship ends be it marriage or still seeing each other, there's always one person who jad time to detach while the other is bombarded all once.
The way Nedra is informed by her husband, he's filed for divorce is just a dog move. The book is well written as she goes through the shock, the anger, the confusion, the diebelieve, the unsure bouts of what she didn't do enough.
Meeting Jermaine was a blessing in disguise *literally*, but so well deserved. She is cared for, nurtured, and he let's her go through it slowly but he shows up.
Her husband's sister whom she's known since childhood sticks with her and I love that, how that is pushed at times. Her relationships with her mum and her grandma with the trifling advice. The generational draw of lifestyle choices and life was good.
The ex-husband though, I mean, he will say some understandable stuff and then put his foot in his mouth and you're just left wondering. But he honestly needed to grow up. His resentment of Nedra not being a virgin when he was is dumb.
But it's a well written story. Plus, he business is thriving.

Not what I expected but still came out to a 3 1/2 stars for sure!!!

First time reading this author and it was not what I expected at all. After reading the synopsis I really thought I was going to read a book of revelation and how she was shown how live from your soul mate is so perfect but it this story came out to be more of a whiny brat of a woman who just couldn’t let go and of a pathetic man who didn’t mind be a rebound, but the penmanship of this author and how well this was crafted bought up there!!!!
Jermaine saw Nedra fell head over heels for her while. Feta was still mourning the loss of her marriage and of Chris who was adamant to show her how he was not her soulmate and she was not his but she couldn’t accept that hence the anger and all started making her look and sound so pathetic and just angry.
Truly not what I expected but yet will read this authors work again if she is on KU....

Delicious, delightful, and doggone dopeness....

I so loved this story. The start of the story was simp!y amazing. Then, I was quickly upset by the husbands cavalier attitude, after he'd just doggied his wife. The next emotion was much like Nedra's, I wanted to cap his sorry butt. The fact that his sister was on Nedra's side told the story. Thank you for giving her Hawk to fill real man's shoes, instead of a childish little boy. I can't wait to see what happens with Fred and Ashton...... Loved Sabrina and the crew.... 5 $tars....

Caught me by surprise

I went in blind reading this and it caught me by surprise. I was sucked in from the start! I love Nedra, and her feisty personality. She takes no junk and I LOVE it. Hawk was just an all around good guy. I’m still trying to figure out my feelings for Chris...he makes no sense to me. I’m just happy that Nedra got a chance to really meet her soulmate.
I need to find out what’s going on with Ashton and Fred🧐.

I’d definitely recommend this book. I’m so happy that I have this author another try.

First Time Reading From This Authur

This story had me in tears from sympathy to comical. I felt like I knew these characters. Rarely have I read a book and wished it never ended. This was a different love story, so unpredictable and refreshing. I’ve just added a new author to my favs list and now I have to and read what miss wrote before until the next books in this series comes out. Great 👍🏾

Loved it!

This was such an emotional story. I felt bad for Nedra at first. But I'm glad she came out on top in the end. I still can't believe how she was treated by her husband/ex Chris. He was definitely a strange one. I think he was gay, something was just not right with him. I loved Jermaine! He was perfect for Nedra. My only complaint is I wish we had more on their relationship. But I enjoyed the story anyway!!

The sole reason I gave this story a chance was because I listened to The Write Honesty Podcast about this book. Even though the entire book was spoiled and I knew what the ending would be I still thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and falling in love with Nedra and Jermaine. I just loved their first encounter at the The Greenery. The tender moments that were discussed in the podcast were so much fun to experience as I read the book for myself. Overall I absolutely enjoyed this novel!

Nedra is heartbroken when she learns that some vows just can't be kept. No matter how simple or "affordable" the vow seems, it's not always worth the price. But the months following this heartbreak, she learns that some vows are priceless..

I loved this. I laughed and cried. Nedra felt like my bestfriend and I desperately wanted everything to work out for her. Chencia made this very realistic. It could literally happen to anyone (maybe not the rich baller part but still)

Chris is the real MVP in this story, bc if it wasn't for him taking the hard step, Nedra would not have. He was a little corny, but a good guy. He honestly let her free to be loved and become a mother. (I didn't get in the moving scene when he's talking to Jermaine and things are cool and then they aren't....). I hope he gets an honorable mention in another book in the series.

Anywho, I would like to see more if Nedra and Jermaine's development in the rest of the series.

“To Buy a Vow” was a good read. The narrator wasn’t the greatest and some characters were under developed. Thereafter, the story was a slow burn initially, but clearly got better. Meanwhile, since this book is the first installment of four additional, books hopefully there’ll be explanations for Chris’ weird behaviors. I have my suspicions 🤨. Otherwise, Nedra & Hawk are good look together. He adores her, and she respects him.

While I enjoyed reading this story I feel like the author could have taken a bit more time, it felt very rushed. We didn’t get to spend much time with the characters, there was not much background in any of them and definitely no true character development.

Oh and the narrator. While she wasn’t terrible her use of profanity leaves much to be desired. Some of the words just felt awkward coming out of her mouth, like she was uncomfortable or something. Very cringy.

Beautiful

This story is masterfully written. The characters will draw you in and have you on edge. You can know someone for years and until the blinders have been removed realize that what you knew is no more and how much you both have changed as people. This book is beautiful, and I can't wait for the next installment.

Great love story

I enjoyed reading this love story. It was a good journey to follow the characters. I’m from Little Rock, Ar so to have scenes from the airport and the ride to Pine Bluff was interesting 😍. I don’t like divorce but I like how the author showed another perspective.

Great read and I’m looking forward to reading the others.

Excellent

When a book leaves me wanting more, it's excellent. I grabbed this not knowing what to expect. I appreciated Nedra's emotional journey to her happiness with Jermaine. I hope there is more (hint). This book was well-written, and the characters were well a developed. The writing was solid. It was excellent. Bravo!

Great read

Although I despise the 20 word minimum required to leave any review this one deserves the effort.

I loved the real way the story was written. In the same language that I hear spoken every day by characters that are like people in my world. We all have that person in our lives and it was nice to read a story that didn’t make them prim and proper for publication.

This book is a great example of an. own voice story. I like how Nedra is giving some bad news. She works through her emotions and understands what she wants going forward. Jermaine sees her and is immediately drawn to Nedra. It takes her a bit to understand how she felt about it. I love the sweet ending of the story. #CMCon26
