Grandpa, with his 11-year-old granddaughter, Teddy, applies for a job as caretaker on a lonely spit of land in northern California, run by a Gun Club. The owner, Mr. Jasper, feels that the place is too deserted and inclement to raise a child, so Teddy has to go underground. For much of a year she lives unseen, but the lies and deception gradually take a toll on her conscientious grandfather/guardian. They refuse to be separated but it is inevitable that eventually someone will spot her. Even back in the 1970’s school attendance was required and the mandates of social workers could not be idly flaunted.
This all takes place with a tragic backdrop: a decades-old love story—with reported sightings of a lonely, sobbing woman in white. To add to the mystery various game birds are found wounded or dead, so it seems that modern poachers are at their deadly, illegal business. How a hidden-away girl receive an education for age--not to mention enjoy companions her own age, when to reveal the truth of her existence means that her grandfather will lose his NO-KIDS-ALLOWED job!
Weather, mysterious lighting tricks, teenage poachers and a book of local history all become contributing factors as Teddy (short for Theodora) resolves to solve several problems. almost at once. It would be so wonderful to live as a lady in the light! Charming mystery for children 10-13.
