Police find the body find in the Ohio River. The victim's wrists and feet are bound, and he has a single gunshot wound to the forehead. The locals are baffled until they get an ID.
Lieutenant Ash Rashid doesn't want the assignment, but he knows he has to take it. Because it's a family matter. The dead man was an FBI agent who had infiltrated a suspected terror cell, one run by Ash's brother-in-law.
Ash investigates and dives into a world in which the most familiar faces are the most dangerous. Every new clue and every new insight he makes leads him closer to his murderer. They also lead him closer to home.
But even as Ash searches, long-laid plans are coming to fruition. Something deadly is coming. Ash has to stop it. If he doesn't, those he loves most will pay the biggest price.
Sleeper Cell is the seventh thrilling mystery in Chris Culver's New York Times' bestselling Ash Rashid series. If you like Michael Connelly, John Sandford or James Patterson, you're going to like these books. Readers can enjoy Sleeper Cell without having read any other books in the series.
Chris Culver is the New York Times bestselling author of the Ash Rashid series of mysteries. After graduate school, Chris taught courses in ethics and comparative religion at a small liberal arts university in southern Arkansas. While there and when he really should have been grading exams, he wrote The Abbey, which spent sixteen weeks on the New York Times bestseller's list and introduced the world to Detective Ash Rashid.
Chris has been a storyteller since he was a kid, but he decided to write crime fiction after picking up a dog-eared, coffee-stained paperback copy of Mickey Spillane's I, the Jury in a library book sale. Many years later, his wife, despite considerable effort, still can't stop him from bringing more orphan books home. The two of them, along with a labrador retriever named Roy, reside near St. Louis where Chris is hard at work on his next novel.
Sleeper Cell by Chris Culver is the 7th in the Ash Rashid mystery series.
First, let me thank the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Series Background: Ashraf Rashid is a lieutenant in the Indianapolis Major Case Squad. He has a wife and two children. His Muslim faith is often brought into the story-lines, as is his battle with the bottle. He tries very hard to do what is right, but often finds himself in precarious situations. He works closely with the FBI.
My Synopsis: Ash is working with the FBI to find out why one of their agents was murdered, and why that agent seemed to have been so involved with Ash’s brother-in-law Nassir. Nassir and Ash’s sister are separated, mainly due to the group of men that Nassir is working with. The group is building a “summer camp” for Muslim children, but there seems to be more to this camp than meets the eye. Why had the dead undercover agent infiltrated their group?
Meanwhile, the FBI has been monitoring a lot of chatter about a terrorist group planning something in the area. The Indy500 is fast approaching, and it would be the perfect place for an act of terror. The more Ash investigates, the more roads lead back to Nassir. So what will Ash do if one of his own family members is a terrorist?
My Opinions: Chris Culver never disappoints. I am really enjoying this series. I think Ash is a wonderful character, and particularly like the way he interacts with his family. This book, instead of shying away from the Muslim terrorist issue, brings it out front and center. It doesn’t justify the radicalization of young Muslims, but it does show us some of the reasons they are swayed. It also shows us how a whole group of people can be victimized by the bad actions of a precious few. I find the whole subject rather interesting, and very sad.
The plot and pace of this book were really good, and tension continues to build throughout the story. The writing, as always, was smooth.
Book 7 of 7 done. This one wasn’t my favorite of the 7. Too much terrorist story and not enough Hannah and kids, Paul and Emilia and even Mike Bowers. I love Ash and like the balance between family/friends and work. Makes Ash a really likable guy and good thing I liked him before this one. The balance was off with the relationships and work, with the loser being the relationships. That said, will definitely read another Ash book if there is one.
Right now I finished the final number 7 of the series. It’s a very surprising ending at the conclusion of this book. I have enjoyed reading this series almost as much as I enjoyed reading the Joe Court series and the Homer Watson series by Chris Culver. I would highly recommend it.
OMG. This is by sure the best book in this series. They were all great but this one by far beat all the rest. This is a great book filled with suspense. This is a book you won't put down. I highly recommend this book.
Best Ash Rashid book in the series!!!! I’ve said that on every book, but this one was impossible to predict. Clear your schedule for the day because you’re not going to stop reading until the last page!!!!!
All I can say is WOW! I didn’t see that ending coming!
Keep writing because I am ready for the next ones! Every book in every series is great, and I have run out of books left to read. Thank you for the MANY hours of escape into a good book!
I didn't think I'd like this book, but it was probably the best in the series. So interesting and so exciting! I hope he writes more books in this series!
