A century since the departure of the Gods, the Three Nations are now united beneath the Tsar. Magic has been outlawed, its power too dangerous to remain unchecked. All Magickers must surrender themselves to the crown, or face imprisonment and death.
Alana's mundane life has just been torn apart by the emergence of her brother's magic. Now they must leave behind everything they’ve ever known and flee – before the Tsar’s Stalkers pick up their trail. Tasked with hunting down renegade Magickers, the merciless hunters will stop at nothing to bring them before the Tsar’s judgement.
As the noose closes around Alana and her brother, disgraced hero Devon finds himself at odds with the law when he picks a fight with the wrong man. The former warrior has set aside his weapons, but now, caught between the renegades and the Stalkers, he is forced to pick a side – the empire, or the innocent.

OATH BREAKER is the first book in the Legend of the Gods series by Aaron Hodges.
Within an epic fantasy world that Hodges has created, the themes that are the base which hold the underpinnings of the story are good vs evil/light vs dark. Using a variety of characters with meaningful storylines, vibrant environments, short chapters and quick pacing all benefit to move the story forward.
This book was fun to read and I am sure many would have no trouble in reading it within a day’s time. This was a free read that I obtained through BookBub—lucky me as I know I will continue reading Hodges’ books!
I was hoping for good things when I picked this one up because the book looked pretty great from the cover and it seemed like it would definitely have my favourite thing... dragons! I'm glad to say after having finished it that I definitely had fun reading this and I got through the whole story in just two sittings.
This story follows Alana and her brother Braiden who are on the run from the Tsar. They know Braiden has got magic and it's not allowed in this world unless you turn yourself into the Tsar for training or possibly death. They do not trust the Tsar and so they plan to flee, but they may need help to escape.
Devon is an ex-soldier and he's got a lot of guilt about things he did in his past by order of the Tsar. He's hoping to keep his head down but when he gets into a spot of trouble he ends up meeting Alana and they are forced to work together to flee.
What I liked about this was the easy pacing and the fact that the story flowed. I found it very easy to slip into the plot and the action and I really liked that.
In terms of the world it's fairly typical, and the magic varies because not only are there dragon characters but also there are many people who have magic of their own. It also seems that there is a lot more than first appears when we start the story...
Overall I found this to be a fun romp and a good story. I think it's got a lot of potential to go further and although I feel like the characters could have been fleshed out more I liked it. I did see the big reveal coming too, but maybe that was luck? 4* so 8/10 for #SPFBO.
Oath Breaker book one of the Legend of the Gods series by Aaron Hodges. There is a prequel series as well but I dove into this one cause Dragonnns. I am rating this book 3 stars. It was a fun and quick read that contained a lot of fun magical elements. There is dragons that talk, demons, dark magic and MCs with anger issues haha one of them uses a hammer with dorment magic.
The world building isn't too complicated or elaborate. The previous series might had more of that. Tsar is the current ruler, he is strict. When one fails they are threatened with death. He has demons and dragons at hand. But mostly works with his Stalker group to catch Magickers. Everyone with magic must hand themselves in otherwise they will get hunted down. Some are trained but not everyone is seen back..
We follow two set of people on the run. Alana and her brother and Devon and his friend. Alana is afraid for her brother who has magic, she is keeping him hidden and wants to escape the city. Devon who stepped down from being a lieutenant after winning the war took up a fight with one of the guards that got too heated and was kinda forced to leave the city to safe his own ass. His friend helping him out. Both ready for something new. The two worlds collide and not in a friendly way, they still end up helping Alana and her brother escape. And later on they all kinda stick together and help each other out. Meeting another cool friend along the way!
To me it came over a bit too juvenile at times and predictable, it didn't make me hate the plot but I missed a certain depth. Sometimes when the characters were dealing with a situation it got too focussed on one person and you had no idea how the dynamic was with the others. The situations could be quite heated! It felt very one on one while it was a group effort. I also personally didn't like that one of the MCs kept saying sonny and princess when he talked to people, haha! They are all quite young so it didn't somehow fit the voice but yeah just my personal experience.
I feel like this book would fit a younger audience. It is adventurous and has some cool magical elements. The story itself had a constant pacing and kept you hooked in the plot. Devon is a chill big brute with a hammer with anger issues and Alana has a big mouth and knows how to keep her ground! It has its charm and I am curious where it will lead. The book ends with a nice cliffhanger, and there are mysteries left unsolved!
It starts with us following a main character, called Devon, as he approaches the festivities after the last battle of the war for control over the Three Nations. The Tsar, leader of Plorsea, with his Magickers, had defeated the Trolan army. Devon has different thoughts and shame for his role in winning the battle with his Warhammer (kanker) in his hand.
After returning home as a hero, he turns his back and resigns his commission, against the Tsar’s and peoples wishes and struggled for five years doing bit piece work where he could. Named as a coward by some, this is his burden to carry.
The Tsar has outlawed magic and any citizen must report anyone that breaks out with magic, which can be extremely dangerous when they come into their powers as they haven’t learnt how to control them. Anyone hiding such people are punished by death.
A young brother, Braidon, and his older sister, Alana, are trying escape the city as Braidon’s power has broken out and he could be hunted down at any moment by the Tsar’s Stalkers, magic trained soldiers who are sent to track and capture all with magic.
The paths of Alana and Devon cross and he refuses to help her and later this leads to Devon picking a fight with one of the Tsar’s guards who calls him a coward to his face and won’t leave him alone. Devon must now decide what to do, as he can’t stick around until matters cool down.
Both parties are trying to leave the city and matters get close to the line as the Stalkers are also dispatched to catch an outbreak of magic at the edge of the city. The rest of the book follows this escape and the battle between our main characters and those that are chasing them and the evil, black magic traces in the path to Northland.
Lots of action taking place and a great pace to the story keeps you interested and intrigued at all times. Mixing in some dragons in the control of the Tsar, demons, magic being all used up and even a priestess with magical strength and powers, makes this exciting to read. How the second book will top this one I don’t know.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and can’t wait for the next in the Legends of Gods series. Having already read the Praegressus Project series, I knew I loved the author’s books, but this was a bit of a change of scene for me. With superb writing, anyone would love this book and I have enjoyed reading it immensely. I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
This is an entertaining story that hits a few of my buttons. First of all, I loved Devon, who fits one of my favorite fantasy character types – the strong, older grizzled veteran who is world-weary and lets his actions speak more than his words (think Logen Ninefingers from The First Law or Clay Cooper from The Band). Also, I love when these types of characters have a deeper sense of morals that inspire them to help those in need, or to fight against a greater enemy, and that is Devon.
In this book, Devon (at times grudgingly) agrees to help two siblings who are trying to escape the tsar. (Sidebar note: I listened to the audiobook, and it was annoying the way the narrator consistently pronounced tsar as “tt-zar” almost as a 2-syllable word. I have always heard the word with the silent “t” as “zar”.)
Overall this was well done and ended with some surprise twists and a big cliffhanger. 3.9/5 stars.
A MASTERPIECE IN PROGRESS!!! I freaking loved this book. I could tell you all about the story and the things that happened in it. But you read the blurb. I'm going to tell you how I felt reading it. Are you ready? Great. Its an easy to follow, wonderfully written, smooth flowing read that hooked me right from the start. The characters, the scenes and the locations were spot on realistic. The details and descriptions were so graphic I felt like I was a part of the adventure. There were plenty twists, turns and surprises around every corner that kept my attention and frozen to my seat. I was so immersed I couldn't put it down. I'm not kidding. Aaron's gifts and talents are really exceptional. His imagination and ability to transform worlds is explosive. He totally rocked this tale. Excellent job Aaron.
"Oathbreaker", by Aaron Hodges, is an exciting adventure story that features several strong characters, one of whom is a sword-wielding young woman who is determined to protect her young brother, who has magical abilities which are just beginning to manifest, and a somewhat unwilling "protector" that they meet along the way, Devon, the wielder of the "Kanker" - a warhammer that had, at one time, belonged to his older brother, and his friend, Kellian, a former compatriot in war, who is now the proprietor of an inn ... at least until Devon shows up there (and the Inn gets burned down by a few of Devon's "friends"). The story actually begins in the midst of a war that Devon is participating in, which was a surprising start for me...but near the end of a campaign to conquer the world. While not the most comfortable place to begin an adventure tale, it sets the stage for an odyssey of exciting adventures for these 4 ill-fated companions, including an encounter with another compatriot, Quinn, a mage looking for other young mages to conscript for the Emperor. He is not a friend of the companions, however! Rather he's a formidable foe. Alana is terrified of him, for her brother's sake, and Devon knows him, but certainly doesn't like him. The story gets off to a breathtaking start as they try to escape Quinn, meet up with another mage along the way, and then encounter all kinds of unexpected foes, as they try to get to a safe haven in the North. This is the first story in a new series by the author. The story promises to become a heartstopping, furious race for this small band as they try to outwit a very smart "magicker" who is on a mission for the emperor, and whose ultimate motives are not made clear until very late in the story. Plenty of magic and swordplay, a complex tale in a broad world filled with perils, and the final adventure - a ride on the back of a golden dragon. Awesome! (I chose to read this book initially because I so liked the picture of the dragon on the cover.) It appears the dragon is talking to Devon (wielder of the war hammer) on the cover. I'm looking forward to starting the second book in the series, "Shield of Winter". This new series, I think, will live up to its description as an "epic fantasy". It's certainly starting out as one!
Excellent writing! The story is well written and keeps the reader on their toes. It is truly an escape for the two siblings with many challenges and obstacles to overcome. I highly recommend this book to those that love adventure and fantasy along with magic.
The prologue of Aaron Hodges Oathbreaker really drew me in, and made me suspect I would enjoy the rest of the book - and I was correct. The narration quickly drew me in and I found myself caring about what happened to the main characters. As the story developed, my empathy for Devon grew as his character unfolded through the story, and Alana's character arc was intriguing. Hodge was meticulous in how he conveyed the latter, allowing him to setup a bit of a surprising reveal at the conclusion (I'll admit, I kind of saw something coming, though not exactly what was revealed).
I appreciate that even while Hodges was creating a larger-than-life warrior in Devon, the character is not unrealistic. Amazing and insanely powerful warrior, yes - invincible, unstoppable war machine? Nope. The characters make good decisions and bad decisions and the consequences of those decisions feel very realistic (and sometimes rough). I found the story very engaging and am eager to learn what comes in the next volume.
As this was the first in a series, I think it is good to note that there was a solid amount of closure at the end of this book. I won't quite say it ended on a cliffhanger—there are some big conflicts left unresolved—but there is definite sense of resolution, at least to some degree. For those who care, the writing was largely clean of cursing and the romantic elements were kept to a minimum, and nothing explicit was detailed (nor did anything along that lines really happen...). I'm not sure if Hodges was aiming this at a YA or even pre-teen audience, but I would consider the subject matter appropriate for such an age group. That's not to say the story is simple or the violence is mild (it would probably get a PG-13 rating as a movie) - as an adult I enjoyed it, and I'm sure most adults who enjoy fantasy would like it as well.
[Note: I did receive a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review]
This is definitely my most favorit fantasy book of 2019. I received Oathbreak in exchange for newsletter signup on bookfunnel and let me tell you, it was totally worth every penny :) More so that I got whole trilogy as audio book from that newsletter as exchange for honest review on audible.
Legend of the Gods is best sort of epic fantasy, including just right amount of everything you can hope for. Great characters you would quickly start to like with interesting background stories, skills and subplots. Story is building slow and have nice twists - not huge ones as author is slowly preparing you for what will come, but still, I expected some but not all.
I don't usually read books twice but first book was fun even on second "read". As I received whole triology on audible just after I finished first part, I started listening over with my wife (who loves it so far).
Audio version: It is really hard to get used to voice of narrator and honestly - we really really dislike him at start. But now as we finished second book, we both love him and his scale of voices. Only real trouble is that he choose too childish voice for main heroine and too deep and adult voice for main hero - its kind of weird when they are flirting... seems like 12 year old girl with 40 year old dude (and my wife was really disturbed untill I remainded her that they are in fact quite close in age). For both of us its both first audio book we listened to and at the same time first english one (we are not native English speakers).
A mere hundred years after the events of the Sword of Light Trilogy, and the Three Nations are finally at peace under a new ruler known as Tsar. But things are not as they seem. Wielders of magic are hunted down by the Tsar's army of Stalkers. Alana and her brother Braden are such wielders, and are forced to run but the Stalkers are never far behind. When they meet Devon, a former hero now deemed a coward, they get some unexpected help. However, with the Stalkers not far behind, can they make it to the Northlands and freedom from the Tsar's edicts?
This is a fun story, a worthy follow up to the Sword of Light. The characters are likeable, with some hidden depth. Who is the Tsar? Is he the leader the people believe him to be? Why does he detest magic, and where the hell did he get dragons from? Why does the leader of the Stalkers, Quinn, know so much about Alana? And can Devon overcome his guilt to fight the good fight?
Not all is revealed in the first in the new trilogy, but it definitely develops an interest in reading/listening more into the series. The narrator, who I believe without bothering to check, is the same guy who did the Sword of Light, and he does a masterful job.
If you liked the Sword of Light, or you like fantasy with characters with a good back story, then Oathbreaker is definitely worth your time.
The Tsar has outlawed magic since the war. People need to be protected from wild magickers who can cause mass destruction and death with their uncontrolled abilities. Parents are expected to bring their children to the Tsar if they develop magical abilities. Once a child has been turned over they are almost never seen again. Alana's little brother has developed magical abilities and she wants to get him out the 3 kingdoms so he will be safe. In their efforts to escape the authority of the Tsar Alana and her brother end up running with Devon, a disgraced, retired solider. He was afraid of his own strength when fighting and was afraid of that taking him over. They also collect Devon's friend the retired solider now barkeep and a priestess who has been living in the forest for years. As the group runs from the Tsar's Stalkers they are plagued by the unusual knowledge the lead stalker seems to have of Alanna.
This is a wonderful introduction to a series and I can't wait to read the next in the series.
I received this audiobook for free from the author in exchange for my honest review.
If I could choose one style of book ( which is hard for me) that I enjoy the most, this style is it. I love magic, dragons, and characters with a destiny to fight for good. In this story, the tsar has taken over after a long and cruel war. He has outlawed magic and if your child has the gift, you are supposed to turn them in. Stalkers search for these people and hang anyone that disobeys. This does not sit well for Devon who was a hero during the war. He thinks he did wrong by killing so many people. Alana and her brother are fleeing because he has magic. It seems that there is some past history with the lead stalker, but the books only hints at it until the end. As they leave the capital city, they meet up and try to fight an evil in the forest. Soon their paths intertwine as they flee from the cruelty of the stalkers. Alana is captured and it is then that we find out who she really is. This book is well written. The characters are well defined. It reminds me of Eragon.
Disclaimer. I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the author, in exchange for an unbiased review.
What I liked about the book - This a fantastic start to a brand new fantasy series from the author Aaron Hodges. This is apparently a spin-off series starting a century after the author's previous series. I haven't read that previous series and didn't feel like I'm missing any backstory when I was listening to this book. This book is doing its own world-building and character development; both of which are done pretty well. The characters are very likable and draw you in. And then the beautiful story telling keeps you engaged. I enjoyed listening to it from start to end. Can't wait for the next one.
What I disliked about the book - Nothing specific that I can think of.
Narration - Narration by David Stifel was done pretty well. It made for an entertaining listen.
Alana knew she had to leave the city ruled by the Tsar in order to save her brother Braiden’s life, because he had wild magic powers and these were banned by the Tsar on penalty of death. However on her own she could not escape, so she tricked Devon, the war hero, and wielder of the mighty hammer, Kanker and his friend Kellian to help her out and they all ended travelling together but the stalkers led by the cold hearted Quinn were on their tails, and no matter what they would not stop hounding them. Quinn had too much to lose if he failed the Tsar and the Tsar wanted Braiden at all costs. A sword and sorcery epic first book in what I envisage will become an epic saga. A story full of dragons, haunted forests, traitors, lots of action, friendship and love. Couldn’t ask for more in a book for sure, definitely a must read for lovers of sword and sorcery fantasy!
This book had a really slow start, with a bit more telling on the background of the world instead of showing. After a few hours in, this book really picked up. The narrator for the audio book reminded me of the narrator for Game of Thrones, though he was a bit too slow. When I changed the speed from Normal to Fast, it was much better, but even then a touch too slow.
I liked the characters, and the trials they faced along the way. It's your standard quest fantasy with a touch of underlying romance and separation of characters. The end was satisfying, though with a touch of a cliffhanger, still it felt complete enough to not bother me. I look forward to checking out the rest of the series.
An enjoyable fantasy following a brother and sister, who have a good relationship, and a former war hero, who is now thought of as a coward since he chose to quit the Tsar's army. They're joined by a former army mate as they flee for their lives from the Tsar and his Stalkers, especially Quinn, a former army mate who is extremely jealous of Devon. There is magic, and dragons (I would love to see more of those!), and demons, and plenty of action to carry the story along. I have to say my favorite side character is Tilly, and someone else we meet near the very end of this book. I'm interested to see what happens in the sequel, especially since the story ended on a cliffhanger.
With this cover, I decided that this book would either be hokey or amazing. It fell into the latter to my great enjoyment.
Alana and her magical brother Braiden are on the run. Magic, specifically wild magic, has been outlawed. If you hide a magical family member, then they put you to death. No one really knows what happens to the magical youth, but some are trained to be in the Tsar's service.
Devon is kind of awol from the Tsar's army. He and his mighty hammer killed without thought during the last campaign, and part way through Devon's blood lust died, and he realized that all that death wasn't necessary.
So he is called " the cowardly hero" because he grew a conscience. At first, Devon wanted nothing to do with the ever sassy Alana and her doomed brother. If course Alana 's sass grows on him.
I keep wondering(as I am supposed to) why Quinn, the magic Stalker that is chasing them, knows Alana 's name. I mean, Quinn wants to kill Devon and capture the siblings, but what is going on?
I love that Devon has a buddy in Kellian. Heaven knows I love a bromance. These two are so cool. They always have each other's back. And they are always there to give the proverbial head smack, too.
I really want to see where this is going with Devon/ Alana/ Quinn. C'mon, you know it is going somewhere, right? Was she involved with Quinn before he betrayed her? Will she and Devon get together?
This trilogy was an enjoyable read. Not as in-depth as an adult epic fantasy, but still enjoyable. The world building was solid. And as you can see by the cover of the books, there are dragons. There are other magic users as well including demons and a magically created sword. This story is a constant pursuit of one group or another told from either the pursuers point of view or the pursued's. It switches constantly and then they mix it up when they have their confrontations. There are no clear cut sides here initially because some of the people are keeping their identity a secret, even using magic to do so. The Tsar has sent out Quinn and his Stalkers to find his missing children. Devon and Kellian are on the run because Devon got into a fight with the wrong guy and now they've got to get out of town fast. Alana and Braidon are caught up in some turmoil around the city gate and end up joining up with Devon and Kellian to take the next boat leaving the city. These people come from all over the city to converge on the gate and then they travel all over the Three Nations, the forests, and the Northland until the end of the third book. I really would have liked a much more detailed map or multiple maps. Recommended
I really enjoyed this book. My only qualm is that it was so fast-paced, I felt like we barely had time to catch our breath. The world was rich, but I would have liked to have spent a bit more time in it. The book felt like an epic fantasy squeezed into a YA novel length.
That being said, I found Devon, Quinn, and Alana interesting characters. I loved Alana's loyalty to her brother, Braiden (although I would have liked a bit more characterisation from Braiden--perhaps this comes in the sequels?), and the budding romance between Devon and Alana was a sweet touch that didn't overpower the plot. I also liked the dynamic between Devon and Kellian, although, again, I would have liked more scenes of them together.
The story asked a lot of questions that kept me turning the pages into the night, but I felt like the twist at the end was foreshadowed enough that I guessed it early on, so it didn't come as a shock.
I really enjoyed reading the book.It took a while to get into it but then it was too late stop reading.ALana and her brother, Braidon, who has magic are forced to fleee the city because all magic is outlawed by the Tsar. Devon , an old warrior who has depressions ends up in a bar run by an old war friend, Kellian . Unfortunately Devon's fame has followed him and he gets into a fight with on of the Tsar`s guards and is forced to flee along with his friend. They encounter Alana again and they pair up rather relunctantly to try and flee the city. They are pursued by the Stalkers with their commander, Quinn another war buddy of Deven's. They meet challenges , one after another but are still pursued. Will they be able to escape is the question. Well worth reading.I feel the book really rates 4.5at least.
I am between a 3 and 4 star rating. I listened to the audiobook. I also should note I have not read the prequel series. The book was interesting enough to keep me listening, and magic being illegal was a good plot driver. I did have a hard time connecting with the characters. I feel like they could have been better developed. Also, the twist ending was a bit predictable. Overall, I didn’t get immersed in the story to a point where I forgot I was listening, but it was an easy read with good plot movement to keep me going. It was also good enough to get me to pick up the second book.
The thing that really bothered me was that the author clearly didn’t do his research about how certain injuries would affect someone. If someone has truly has their hamstring cut, they are not going to be standing at all. And someone who is knocked unconscious for hours isn’t just going to wake up and feel normal. Maybe these are little things to some, but it really breaks me out of the flow of the story.
Aaron Hodges has proven, once again, that his excellent storytelling abilities are awake and thriving. Oathbreaker has every thing it needs to make the it a near perfect book. The world and characters are so well developed that I caught myself holding my breath during extremely tense moments. The action made me feel as if I was part of this adventure. The magic is not overdone, but well placed and there are dragons! I'm so looking forward to reading the next book in this this series. I highly recommend it and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this ebook from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
I am not done reading yet. I'm forcing myself to go farther then I usually would because of all the nice reviews here. But... One character is really pissing me off.... They pretty much are striking me ass garbage... They happen to be a female. It seems like I am running into a lot of female characters that are just garbage people but for some reason the writing around them are supposed to be heroes. Men, and intelligent none humanoid creatures behaving this way? The story would be framing them in a dim light. But not human females... I don't get it... But its pissing me off.
I received this book for free on my Kindle app. That means I will not be reading the rest of the series. ..unless they come along for free too...lol...I doubt that. Great adventure, suspense, humour, pain, magic, dragons, ships and a touch of romance. The fight scenes were a bit long, to me anyways. I know there was a lot of secrets, past emotions of guilt, envy and revenge being expressed in the different battles, but Quinn and Devon really fought forever...lol... Actually, so did Quinn and Alana. There are surprises at the end of the book too. All is not what it seems to be. I went and read reviews about the next books in the series, so I know what happens. :)
A tortured war hero, a sister trying to save her brother from the Tsar, magic powers, epic fight scenes, demons, talking dragons and an exciting story sprinkled with a little romance. If that doesn't make you want to read this book, then I don't know what will.
This is a great series for people who want to read epic fantasies, but don't want to commit to a 5+ book series. This has 3 books in the series and I'm definitely reading all of them. Especially since this book ended on a cliffhanger/plot twist, although I kinda saw it coming.
I'm definitely hoping for more dragons in the next 2 books and would love to see how Alana and Devon's relationship develops.
The tsar has placed a ban on forbidden magic. Thus, Alana and her brother are fugitives. As they attempt to escape with Devon, the Tsar’s Stalkers pursue them.
This tale is an astounding blend of the Dragons & Mythical Creatures Fantasy, Sword & Sorcery Fantasy, and Epic Fantasy genres. The journey is fraught with added dangers. Unexpected events hinder and help their escape. As wondrous as it is, the story ends on a cliffhanger.
Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Romantic. Tragic. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
This is a fantastic story. We are back in the Three Nations with well written and well developed characters. Fast paced and exciting! The author does not let us down with this thrilling story. Plenty of action with twists and turns. This is a book you will keep reading to the end, and what an end, I was totally surprised. I highly recommend this book, you will not be sorry!
Captivating storytelling. War is horrendous no matter where it is. Magic with it is worse and to be caught after the fighting is over with magic, you could be put to death if you harbor one. Alana and her brother Braidon who had magic were on the run and the unusual help they get to find passage on a boat and saving their lives was unexpected and surprising. Great characters, great writing. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
If you liked The Soul Sword Trilogy, you will enjoy this book just as much. Alana must get her brother out of Ardath. He is a Magicker and magic is outlawed by the Tsar. She stumbles across Devon, a decendant of Alan the warrior who wielded the hammer in the final battle against Archon. Together with her brother and Devon’s friend Killian they all escape Ardath with the Tsar’s stalkers on their trail. Great story and great characters with plenty of action.
