NOW & THEN: An Israeli retrospective

Rate this book
This book is a vivid and original picture of life in Israel over more than half a century. Highly critical of many features of today's Israel, it also presents the complexity of the nation's problems. An intimate portrait of everyday life, it also illustrates the social, political and economic situation by means of a monthly report of the year 2017, interspersed with previous writing: stories, articles and book extracts, both published and unpublished. The author ha experienced many facets of life in Israel. Immigrating to the country in 1961 to a Galilee kibbutz, he later moved to the desert town of Arad for almost a decade, winding up in Motza Elite, a village near Jerusalem. He started out as an agricultural laborer, continued building walls and paths, before becoming a tourist officer and public relations director of the new University of the Negev. After moving to the Jerusalem area, he worked as a reporter for Israel Radio and later joined the Jerusalem Post as a senior feature writer. He has published in several papers and journals including the New York Times, Newsweek, Commentary, National Jewish Monthly, and Ariel. He has broadcast for the BBC, CBC and National Public Radio. In 1994 he became founding managing editor of Palestine-Israel Journal. Since 1970, he has published nine books about Israel, Jewish history, and Israeli-Palestinian relations, seven of them in the U.S. He has been active in three Israeli NGOs, which foster Israeli-Palestinian coexistence and cooperation. He and his wife, a special education teacher, have three children and seven grandchildren.
