Shaye Robinson never questions her role as the tame, submissive sweetheart of Vixen Bluff's illustrious physician, Dr. Robert Baxter. At least, not until she finds his hands wrapped around her neck at the office Christmas party. Blinded by betrayal and more than ready to bid adieu to their loveless engagement, Shaye makes a devastating mistake that leaves her scarred and broken, and at the mercy of the one man she was trying to escape. Nurse Alexander Mayes avoids temptation of any kind. Always. No exceptions. Living a mediocre, no-frills life is all that's kept him and his little brother fed, clothed, and off the streets since the untimely death of their parents. So when the blonde in room 301 emerges from a coma and immediately charms her way into Alex's heart, he has no other choice than to keep her at arm's length. Her smile may be as rare as her miraculous circumstances, and her eyes may hint at an uncontrollable fire just waiting to lay waste to those who have wronged her, but crossing that particular line would be career suicide. As Shaye and Alex navigate the treacherous waters of her recovery, they discover everyone in Vixen Bluff has already deemed them 'meant to be', despite the clear conflict of interest. But just when Shaye thinks a happily-ever-after could be in the cards after all, a threat from her past makes his presence known, jeopardizing everything she's fought so hard to rebuild.
I absolutely love this authors writing style. It's smooth and it's like she doesn't have to put much effort because it comes so naturally to her. I absolutely did not want to put this book down and I read it in less than 24 hours! This story has likable characters, a storyline like one I've never read before and suspense. I can't imagine the things Shaye went through with her ex-fiance, Robert. The love that you can see from Alex from pretty much the beginning is awesome too. I laughed a lot, I even cried towards the end. Huge Kudos to Catherine Black on this book! I hope it's super successful!
I read this a lot earlier this year, so bare with me a little on this review.
From what I remember – I enjoyed reading this book. I also remember feeling like it wasn’t what I was expecting.
I was recommended this book from someone who has similar taste in the darker reads, so I was anticipating something in that vicinity of genre. So when this came up less dark than I anticipated and more ‘normal’ I was surprised.
Moving past this initial expectation, I was still able like it so much, I read the next book in the series- well, I finished the whole thing…so you know.
There’s no dispute that Shaye is a strong lead in this book. She’s been through hell and back and instead of laying down and giving up, she pushed through and fought her way back to where she wanted to be.
Alex was amazing in a way that he was there for support and strength for Shaye and allowed her to do things in her own pace (most of the time anyway). He didn’t barrel into her life and take command as you see most H’s do. He was a quiet foundation for her.
Reading through Shaye’s perspective, while she can’t move or talk at the beginning made things very interesting. I also really enjoyed the connection forming between the two main leads even though she was still in a coma. How he was pretty much the only one who talked to her, instead of about her.
I’ll admit, there were moments which felt a touch too much on the cheesy side of things, and some scenes did feel redundant, or used as ‘fillers’. But they were easily forgiven with the way Shaye was able to dig herself out of her ‘isolated hole’ her ex-husband put her in, and build more relationships with her friends, family and Alex. Also, the suspense and situation with Shaye’s ex-husband helped a lot too. It brought a great amount of intrigue and mystery.
COMOTOSE is the first book I've read by Catherine Black. I found it a good book and wouldn't hesitate to read more by this author.
Shaye Robinson was in a bad relationship and her fiancé is abusive, too. She had tried to be a submissive sweetheart to Dr. Robert Baxter, but finally had enough. She was standing her ground and trying to leave him. That set him off, and he is the very reason she ended up in a coma. To make matters more difficult for Shaye, is when the closest emergency room is at Vixen Bluff Memorial Hospital. None other than the illustrious Dr. Robert Baxter has connived his way into being her primary physician. He also convinced her own father to keep her at “his” hospital. He would give her the best care. Better than a hospital more suitable to treat a traumatic brain injury. This is only the beginning of the evil things the Dr. Baxter perpetrates on his defenseless patient.
Nurse Alexander Mayes is just recently employed at Vixen Bluff Memorial Hospital. He is thrilled to have this employment. He has bills to pay, student loans, as well as being the sole guardian of his much younger brother. He starts off as being a floater. That means working on what ever floor he is needed the most. When requested on the 3rd floor is when he meets the “Coma Girl” for the first time. Alex doesn't realize that Shaye can hear and understand every word while still unable to wake up. Every visit with this girl makes it feel like they have a connection. Every time he walks away from her, he can practically hear Shaye begging him to stay. When the terrible Dr. Baxter tried to take her off the ventilator to do her in. She surprises them all by waking up and breathing on her own. This is where the story gets very interesting.
Comatose is the second book that I have read by Catherine Black. I said it before, but it bares repeating - her writing is something special. I can't explain it but the way she writes pulls you in like you are right there and part of everything happening.
I wasn't sure what to expect from Comatose (I don't read the synopsis of books, I judge based on covers) so imagine my pleasant surprise to read a... thrilling romance.
I raged, I giggled, I swooned, I feared, I cried. The thrill was thrilling and nail biting. The romance was sweet, tender, loving, and one thousand percent swoon-worthy.
I loved Comatose and cannot wait to move on to Vixen Bluff book 2.
This was an okay read and at times it dragged on and put me into a “coma”. Shaye was a strong character after being abused by her psychotic ex-fiancée. While hospitalized she crossed path with Alex who was a very wonderful person. There was suspense and romance but I felt that the chemistry between Shaye and Alex could be better. I was kind of put off by the multiple POVs (even minor characters) at the end of the book
I want more of Shaye and Alex! I love their chemistry and their story! This book has romance and heartache. I fell in love with the characters. I experienced sadness, joy, anger and frustration while reading this book. I even shed some tears. I would, and probably will, read this book over and over! Can’t wait to read the other Vixen Bluff books!
Shaye is the epitome of a strong woman. Both physically and mentally. Alex is just a wonderful man that is there for her every step of the way. There connection is absolutely phenomenal. This book is so well written. I can't wait to read more from Catherine Black!
I really enjoyed this book, the characters were in depth and felt very realistic. I really enjoyed the different characters voices in the novel, I thought the inside perspectives added some interest to the way the book read. This was a fun romantic read!
I’ve never read anything by this author and this was recommended. I’m so glad I picked it up it was just brilliant! I love the writing style and the story! What’s not to love? Romance isn’t usually a go to genre for me but I really loved this book.
I have read a lot of books by Catherine Black, and I have never been disappointed! Likeable characters, and interesting storyline, and suspense are all rolled into this one! The things Shaye went through with Robert are unimaginable, and the hero she finds in Alex in endearing. My heart went out to Shaye so many times during this book!
