Rate this book
Should we stay or should we go? Millions of parents with children in public schools can't believe they're asking this question. But they are. And you should be asking it too. Almost overnight, America's public schools have become morally toxic. And they are especially poisonous for the hearts and minds of children from religious families of every faith―ordinary families who value traditional morality and plain old common sense. Parents' first duty is to their children―to their intellect, their character, their souls. The facts on the ground point to one conclusion: get out now.

This book is sensational, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is able to objectively step back and listen to logical, reasonable, not to mention factual, information regarding the crumbling state of the American public school system.

To attack this book as bigoted for what it brings to light with concrete backing is an impulsive emotional response that is silly and unwarranted. The fact is that the public school system has degraded tremendously since my own time in public schools growing up, just a short decade ago. This book highlights particularly well the current issues and the immoral practices going on throughout American schools and provides many examples throughout of the corruption at hand.

The book highlights much of the sexual ideological coercion going on in our schools these days as well as the prevention of Christianity, or even God, being allowed into the institutions, thus creating schools of what the authors recall throughout, practical atheism.

Concerned parents who want to raise their children to be God-fearing, forward thinking, patriotic, servant-style citizens must pull their children out of the public schools, and the authors here explain beautifully well with the utmost clarity on the truth behind why.

Do yourselves a favor and read this book.

I fully agreed with the conclusions and most of the arguments, but it was difficult to get through. The first part of the book especially felt more like a treatise on the transgender issue per se, and not as much about the school system. I listened to the audiobook, and the narration style seemed to make it more difficult. I don't feel like I came away with any especially new insights.

This was such a riveting and eye opening read!
It comes as no surprise that the state of public education is dismal at best. However, this book reveals the painstakingly dark truth of just how toxic - morally, intellectually and politically - public schools have become.

Don't take my word for it though - a Conservative, Christian, Homeschool mother! Look at the heavily cited works in the back of the book - nearly 100 pages of notes and references which substantiate every single claim made by the authors.

The Progressive movement is deeply embedded within the school system (and pushed by huge corporations and left wing advocacy groups). The problems are beyond repair and our children's virtue, character and soul are at stake! A must read for every parent!

A scary look at the current state of public education in America. Well researched and filled with worst case scenarios. It is a little like one of those political HBO movies that is extremely heavy handed from only one side of the issue. I doubt this book will change anyone’s mind on public schools. If you believe they are the best educational option for all students you’ll get mad and put this book down. If you are certain public schools are indoctrinating children with left-leaning propaganda, you’ll have your beliefs validated. Very current on the issues, citing examples as late as 2017.

Very interesting perspective on what is going on in public schools today and what that matters not only to those who have kids going to them, but also to the rest of us tax payers and citizens.

Learned a few new things, mostly confirmed that the experiences we’ve had already in our school district are happening everywhere. Explained/exposed many of the embedded ideologies, more than I had fully understood. I can see these ideologies creeping in everywhere and calling them out as this book does makes them easier to spot.

As a public school teacher of 17 years, this book was a hard pill to swallow. However, this book was spot on with the realities of public education today. “Public schools are radically different from the idealized memory of the past” and “our public schools are failing our children morally, culturally, and academically”. Don’t sacrifice your child’s future for the survival of the public school system. Get Out Now!

I would quibble with a few things here and there, but overall, this book provides a much-needed cataloguing and repudiation of the depraved state of public schools, particularly when it comes to the normative/prescriptive teaching of queer theory/gender identity theory, which comprises a deeply flawed understanding of the human person.

This book is written by two women who were educated at Notre Dame. In addition to their degrees, they have a lot of common sense and a way of expressing what is really going on in the public schools of America. Times are changing and strong agendas are being pushed. This is a must read for everyone especially parents and grandparents. Parents don't have a lot of rights when it comes to their children's education or morals when the student is placed in this environment full time all week. The book is an eye opener. A lot needs to be considered when it comes to where your children learn. The subtle-or not so subtle-ideology being enforced in the schools will influence them.

The authors provide an overview of the current sad state of the "culture war" and its implications for parents. Some of these arguments are why my wife and I decided, more than a decade ago, to homeschool our son; they are even more compelling now.

While there is hope for American education in the long-term, the authors are very pessimistic (see the title) about the short-term, and they spend the book explaining why.

Invaluable information. I (unfortunately 🤦🏼‍♀️) learned SO MUCH about what is happening culturally and don’t think anyone can afford to miss out on this big picture information. I listened to the audio version and even though the narrator wasn’t my favorite, listening at 1.25 speed made it okay, and still VERY much worth listening. HIGHLY recommend listening to or reading.

An interesting book but took a long time for me to read. Lots of food for thought but also pretty biased.

An easy-to-read book on the dangerous teaching occurring in American public schools. If you don't want your child to embrace secularism and hate our nation, pull them out of school.

Great overview and summation of why public schools are destroying the country from the inside out. Especially for those are are unaware of how bad it has become.

Overall
Worth a read. This book is good at presenting the current state of public schools but weak on the argument on why you should leave them.

Review
Mary Rice Hasson presents the information in a clear and orderly fashion allowing the reader to easily understand her view point. Also, it did a good job at presenting resources of where they received their information from. There is even a section where she answers some questions that have been presented to her about the topic. However, the book seemed more of a current state of our public school system then a compelling argument to leave it. I felt as if there should be more hard data showing the success of other forms of education compared to public schools in all seven of her reasons. Furthermore, I would have like to seen actual examples of people leaving public schools, the improvements in the children and how they went about it.

Changes
There needs to be three additional sections added to the book. The first section is how do you successfully pull your child out of public schools. This section should give resources and strategies to parents who do want to pull their child out but don’t know how or where to start. The second section should be stories from parents who have successfully pulled their child out of public schools. This section can show how they did it along with some of the issues they came across in doing so. The third section are the results from kids while they were in public schools’ verse after they left public schools.
