A short story. Honorable mention in NYC Competition. Sometimes the butler did it. Sometimes it is all a big misunderstanding. What is Inspector Nigel Brown to think when Miss Abigail Rochelle drops dead in his office after she says, "It was that butler fellow that did it." Being his first day on the job as an inspector, he has to get to the bottom of it.
J. Schlenker, a late-blooming author, lives with her husband, Chris, in the splendid center of nowhere in the foothills of Appalachia in Kentucky, where the only things to disturb her writing are croaking frogs, screaming guineas, and the occasional sounds of hay being cut in the fields.
This was an enjoyable short story. Well written and pleasant to read. The characters are well formed, better than I would have thought for a short story. It was a combination of detective and romance. Beginning, middle, and ending were all satisfying. Five stars and recommended to short story lovers.
