KAYLA
My infatuation with Ezra Johnson started how all obsessions begin—with a simple crush. Over the years I silently soaked up every shy smile and random act of kindness, wrestling them away to a secret place in my heart meant for unrequited love.
Because if it wasn’t for the fact that I tutor him once a week, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t even know I exist.
Then I find his sketchbook.
And it changes everything.

EZRA
There are two certainties in my life: I’ve been in love with Kayla Reynolds since I was fourteen, and I can’t have her.
I’ve spent years settling for a two-dimensional fantasy world, capturing her beauty with a pencil and paper. She’s kind, smart, gorgeous…
And she belongs to someone else.
Or so I thought.
An interesting turn of events makes me realize things aren’t always how they appear on the outside, and now I’ve got my chance to be the man she deserves.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been called a loser. The cripple. An outcast.
But maybe—just maybe—this time the good guy won’t finish last.

Although Outcast is the fourth book in The Good Guys series, it can be enjoyed as a standalone. Due to language and sexual content, this book is intended for readers 18 and older.

Very sweet and absolutely safe read.

Now I understand why Leonor said she felt old reading it *lol*
Characters half my age... When did I get older? *lol*

Anyway... I'm still young and hot ;-)

A very good book, atypical hero - 99% of all 'romance'-authors go for so called damaged male characters (like one of the side characters - a bully, who was a popular guy at school, looked hot etc ) and try to redeem him and almost always pair him with an innocent heroine - but Jamie Schlosser always writes about good and decent guys!
And I respect the hell out of her for this!
Thanks God there are still authors, who don't sell us disturbing jerks as 'heroes of today'!

It's actually the main reason I read her books.
It's the kind of YA I would recommend to young readers.

Outcast was one of the sweetest romances I’ve ever read. Ezra and Kayla were perfect together. I loved their friends to lovers romance.

In high school, Kayla and Ezra were friends. They both had feelings for one another, but neither one admitted it. Ezra has a physical disability (a bad limp from a knee injury as a child) and Kayla mixed raced with two dads and neither felt like they truly felt in. Finally, after high school, Kayla and Ezra admit their feelings for one another.

Most of this book takes place during their freshman year of college. Ezra is fitting in better than he ever did in high school and he’s rushing a frat. Kayla is working a lot to pay for a private investigator to look up her mom. Even though both of them are busy, they always find time for each other and make one another a priority.

I loved this couple together so much. Ezra is legit the perfect man and Kayla is great too. Even though it’s soft and sweet, it’s also got a lot of sexy times. It was a great read. I listened to the audio and loved it. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author. Side note, I totally want to read Jimmy’s (Ezra’s brother) book now!!

Ezra Johnson’s leg injury has hindered his confidence and kept him from being one of the “cool kids” in high school. Kayla Reynolds doesn’t fit the “popular” mold either, but she makes the best of it.

Wow, this story has a little bit of everything. I swooned a little, awed a little, and fanned myself plenty. Then there was a bit of suspense and action that kicked in, and my heart picked up a faster beat, and I might have fought back a few tears with one of the characters too. But I laughed as well. Not as much as I did with Dropout, but Jeff knew just the moment to lighten the mood. But I’m getting ahead of myself so backing up…

Ezra is such a sweetie! He’s so richly developed in the opening chapters, and my heart broke a little for him. There’s no doubt he’s totally a good guy. (And I don’t even think I was biased in his favor for being a punk rock fan.)

“She deserved better than getting groped by a hornball in public. Romance and shit.”

Kayla is just what he needs. She had a good head on her shoulders, wasn’t self conscious, and so not a quitter. Also major points for featuring not just a heroine with diversity in her ethnic makeup but also with the positive presentation of her same-sex parents who clearly contributed to Kayla being the strong, mature, good-natured person she was.

This is a fabulous young love story. All their firsts together were super hot!

It just goes to show that it’s not about the quantities of partners but the quality of the exchange between the hero and the heroine. Plus they had good communication. We need more couples like this as role models in the romance market.

“Our agreement to be honest had created the most delicious dirty talk.”

In fact, there were pleasingly many examples of positive messages and good advice to be found here.

“People are constantly changing, and either you evolve together or grow apart.”

As well as some big brotherly guidance from my favorite dropout:
“Don’t ever look for dating advice on the internet. Sex stuff? Yeah, go to town on that shit.”

Told via Ezra and Kayla’s alternating first person POV, Outcast is sweet and sexy. I applaud the way Ezra and Kayla, both characters who were far from cookie-cutter, stayed focused on each other, avoiding unnecessary drama and angst. That’s very refreshing not just in the romance world, but especially so in the new adult subgenre. The character development here is solid and the romantic factor stellar alongside an engaging story about learning who you are, being strong where it counts, and growing.

There’s also many likable secondary characters (two legs and four) who gave the story a feel-good quality. I’ll close with some profound words from the sexy James Peabody Johnson:
“The wooing doesn’t end once you’ve got the girl; then you have to keep her.”

Oh god..
I felt really, really old reading about 18 year olds falling in love.
I kept looking for grays in my hair and kept thinking during the whole book 'damn I'm old.'
It's not my preference to read about this type of romance but I was glad that it safe and sweet.

This author is one of my favorites! She has her own style and writes wonderful heroes! She doesn't use the typical tropes of manwhores, billionaires, bdsm/sex club guys. Her characters are normal people and they each have their own distinct personalities! This book is great! I love Ezra and Kayla- they are both really good, sweet people and they are perfect for each other! Ezra is my second favorite hero by this author- Travis is still my number one!

Have you ever had a book that someone recommended more than once or you’ve had it on your reader and for whatever reason you didn’t start it? Then you read it and kick yourself for not reading sooner? That is how I feel
about this book. I was sucked in from the first pages.

HERO Ezra was a great hero. Not alpha (except in bed- gotta watch those quiet ones) however I adored him. He was so kind and selfless you couldn’t help but crush on him a bit. Injured as a child he was dealing with

HEROINE Kayla was also great. She had endured a lot being different in looks than everyone else as well as having 2 dads. It made her childhood a bit difficult. I will say that I wanted to shake her when she waited so long to talk to Ezra. I understood him not saying anything but she could have.

OW DRAMA some flirting from girls but Ezra was either oblivious or be shut it down immediately

OM DRAMA none although it seemed like it

STEAM I’d a moderatate amount of steam but a great story to go with it.

SECONDARY CHARACTERS I am wondering if Jeff and Ashlyn may get a story?

VIOLENCE bullying hazing

SAFETYsafe neither with others after meeting and both virgins

ENDING this is what brought my rating down some I would have loved a better Epilogue It was nowhere enough of their HEA!!

I truly believe that this was the sweetest and best story of the bunch. Ezra practically melted my heart. He was shy, humble, honest, and true. His self-consciousness, though a liability, endeared him even further to me. As for Kayla, she was such a sweetie. I loved everything about her, such as her family and her heart. I’m a sucker for young love and everything about this book spoke to me. It was super cute and heartwarming and gave me plenty of feels because of their naivete, innocence and kind hearts. Oh and I’m also a huge fan of Gavin’s. He was such an awesome friend and I hope that he ends up getting his own happily ever after.

I am little bit skeptical when picking up this book. I am bit weary picking up authors that are new to me. Reading the reviews, the story promises a minimum angst/ drama. Very tricky.

When I am done with this book, I do not disappoint at all. Ezra is that perfect book boyfriend you wish to have during your high school. The good guy. The nice guy. And he truly is.

The story is minimum of angst/ drama and yet I enjoy it very much. The length can be shorten for sure, but hey at the end I appreciate every detail of hazing incidents in the book.

Miss Schlosser is definetly author I am keen to follow.

🌟Brief Summary:
4.5 star
Well for this being the GOOD GUY SERIES… EZRA IS DEFINITELY A GOOD GUY💯

-Ezra knows that Kayla is the one for him the first day he sees her freshman year in high school. But he’s handicapped, bullied and insecure. So he watches and crushes on her from a far.

-Kayla is new in town and starting a new school. She is immediately picked on from the popular people for looking different from them. But with the help of her soon to be BFF she ends up finding her place. She notices Ezra right off the bat and over the years end up crushing on him hard.

-It’s the last few days of senior year when their secret crushes are revealed and a beautiful friendship/relationship starts.

-Now starting College they both face new challenges. Ezra wants to be the man Kayla deserves and the man he always wanted to be in HS. Kayla is on a mission to find info about her birth parents. All the while they are discovering themselves and each other on deeper levels and falling in love.

‼️ Opinion‼️:
-I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Are some things unrealistic? Yes. But also the natural progression of their relationship was very realistic and so swoony sweet! This was such a sweet beautiful story I loved it.
-Overall it was a very endearing read without a lot of angst. It was like watching your favorite TV show. It was very feel good but also touched on some very senseless subjects.

⭐️Cozy, feel good, relatable

-♥️I LOVED LOVED LOVED THAT THEY SHARED EACH OTHERA FIRST EVERYTHING! And the way the author wrote these scenes was done beautifully. I felt all their emotions and I REALLY felt their connection💕

Things I Liked/Loved
-The connection the couple share♥️
-The strength of character each the H and the h had.
-How absolutely ROMANTIC❤️‍🔥 this story was. IT was a true romance story.
-How Ezra 🫶🏻overcame his issues and excepted himself and his disability. He worked to be stronger but stop trying to fit the norm.
-I liked how the bullying was handled in the end.
-🔥THE CAR WASH SCENE😮‍💨 I need to try this lol
-I LOVED THE OPEN HONESTY THEY HAD AND THEIR COMMUNICATION it was so refreshing .

Things I Did Not Like
-I 😬 didn’t like all the social justice stuff! Like we get it. A lot of the issues are important but I don’t want to be preached to about MULTIPLE social justice issues while I read my fantasy book. Maybe one OR 2 issues because they add depth but not like EVERY issue that ever existed. I reduced a half star for this.

-I didn’t connect with Kayla’s story with the homeless people and her mother. It was straight boring. And maybe it was because I felt like I was being preached to but I just was not feeling her storyline.

🦹🏻‍♂️ Hero:
Ezra- 18yrs old handicap(he has a bad leg)
Bullied, shy, a artist and slightly overweight in HS. A beautiful soul. I’m college he is hunky and focused on his health

🦸‍♀️ Heroine:
Kayla - 18yrs old
Adopted, mix ethnicity and picked on for it, strong in her convictions and a heart of gold . Sweet, understanding and has real strength of character.

💭 POV:
Multiple first person

🔥 Burn Rate:
Med slow

😡/😍 Angst level:
Low

❤️‍🔥 Sexy times & Descriptive sex: Yes! There were some very steamy scenes! Damn once they got going it was pretty 🔥🔥
-When they both kiss for the first time 🥰
-When the loose their V’s together ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 ugh this scene was done beautifully!!
-The car wash scene 😮‍💨💯⚡️

🌓 Push/Pull:
A tiny glut of push from Ezra in the very beginning. He thought she has a bf and he also wanted everything with her not just a little and was willing to wait.

☠️ OW/OM Drama:
No real drama. Some misconceptions but no drama they each are all about each other and only each other.

🤮 OW/OM Sex / Fluid or DNA Exchange: none

🤬 Cheating: none

👰🏼‍♀️ Virgins:
Duel V 🥳🥳🥳 this was great

⛈️Separation/ 3rd Act Breakup: none

Safety⚠️Triggers🗡️:
-A lot of social justice issues are harped on…
-Bullying
-homeless people and shelters
-Drug addicts
-Gay marriage
-Adoption
-Adoption by gay couples
-Handicap
-prejudice against a persons looks specifically a person of color
-Being Gay and not wanting to come out

🌈Epilogue:
A few months later
A few years later

🥂HEA:
Yea! We get their wedding day💕

My opinion is just that… MY OPINION.
I know we all get passionate about our favorite reads and characters but we should respect each opinions a thoughts. ~Thank you

If I didn't like Jamie Schlosser's 'Dropout', I knew however, that Ezra Johnson's story, from the way he was described in the book, was one I wanted already. Sometimes, it feels as though 'Outcast' is the sugary-sweet, feel-good New Adult book that I've always wanted to read. It ticks so many of my boxes after all: protagonists who have eyes only for each other, who journey together in their emotional and sexual development and who pretty much know what they want, despite their insecurities.

Schlosser's diverse cast win a thumbs-up from me, as do the number of positive 'messages' that are incorporated in the story without sounding preachy or incredulously (but falsely) positive. I'm also applauding the rarity here of 2 protagonists who actually don't go the well-trodden path of a sub-genre laden with numerous and meaningless hookups/identity-crises, who navigate the tricky waters of college life that wraps in an overwhelming all's-well-that-ends-well way.

I sailed through this book (and actually put down several others I was reading just to get my grabby hands on this), lapped up every bit of awkward high-school interaction (Schlosser ups the clichés about the pretty girl and the unpopular, shy boy), gleefully laughed over their stupid-sweet secret crushes, and swooned at the frog-prince-type transformation after Ezra's fat camp.

Apart from my vague alarm of their incredibly early marriage (clearly my own reservations speaking), 'Outcast' kept me going more than caffeine could because I was determined to finish the it. The bottomline is that it's such a happy story (and possibly an unrealistic one for detractors who prefer angsty reads), and leaves you thinking for a sliver of a time that all can be right in the world.

4 Stars. This is a relatively cute story about high school friends who become more when they go to college together. It's got a bit more angst than the others in this series, but overall, it's still sweet.

Safe; both virgins, some OM/OW drama but nothing major, both each others' first and only for everything.

Outcast is the fourth book in Jamie Scholosser’s The Good Guys series, and it works perfectly fine as a standalone novel. I read it as a standalone and was not missing any of the necessary details – however, I enjoyed it so much I’m desperate to go and read the other books. Dropout in particular, as it tells the story of one of the side characters in this story. I’ll also be grabbing any future books, as I want more stories like this – and I have my fingers crossed certain characters from this one will get a story in the future.

Often in contemporary romance the bad boy is hero – the kind that do wrong yet we come to love them in the end. Straight away, Outcast is different. It says so in the series title – The Good Guys. Rather than being given someone rough around the edges, we’re given the sweetest book boyfriend ever. Honestly, I fell in love with our male lead so quickly. I’d initially been tentative, question whether someone other than the bad boy would manage to hold my attention so completely, yet our male lead in this one won me over in no time at all. If anything, it’s the story of the underdog.

Without a doubt, it is one of the most adorable stories I have read in a long time. It’s such a strong four-star rating, one of those ones where I did contemplate giving it a five-star rating. Those who have read any of my other reviews know how difficult it is to get a five-star rating out of me, so to consider giving Outcast such a rating shows how good this one is.

While this one is a romance, it also has a number of other elements to it. There are plenty of messages throughout, it makes you stop and think about so many things, without preaching at you. It deals with a number of topics that were heavier than I’d expected them to be, but it does so without the book being emotionally draining. In fact, you’ll let out quite a few chuckles during this one. Oh, your heart will break at some points, but you’ll also let out a lot of laughter, too.

The first half of the story is super sweet, sucking you in and leaving you wanting more. The second half of the story is where the action kicks up, where the drama really comes to the forefront. I’d been expecting a rather simple read, something without too much in the adrenaline department, so I was pleasantly surprised when the second half of the book kicked things up a notch and had me sitting up straighter as I flipped the pages at a faster pace to see how everything played out.

There is no doubt I loved this couple, loved the side characters, loved the story, and loved the messages. This was such a wonderful read, and I plan to dive into the other The Good Guys books soon – I mean, I already have them all on my Kindle, so it’s a given I’ll be reading them soon.

Should I read this?
Contemporary selfpub romance is a hit or miss with me. More often than not is a miss because slutshaming, cheating, OM, OW, mysoginia and doormat heroines. Plus I prefer fantasy, paranormal and dystopia. Even historical works better for me than contempo. But the safety gang has given huge thumbs up to this one and it's not frequent that we get virgins protagonists. I'm crossing fingers this one will work for me. Unsafe mysonistic romance seems to outsell safe romance and I want to support the few authors that still write lovable heroes.

It should go without saying, because this is the purpose of goodreads. Feel free to recommend books that you think might appeal to me that are free of OW drama and cheating. I love virgin heroines, I just don't want them paired with manwhores.

I am officially addicted to this series! I absolutely adored this book. It has just the right amount of angst, with literally the sweetest hero I’ve read in a romance book. That said, he’s not quite perfect, but his character arc of overcoming the bullying he experienced in high school was perfection. I loved how all the subplots were tied into his character growth and were perfectly wrapped up in a very satisfying conclusion. While this series is adorable and sweet, it’s not too sweet, since the books are quite steamy and the protagonists aren’t afraid to drop F-bombs.

This was a feel good romance, nothing heavy, no issues, no intensity, just love.

Which is prob why it won’t ever get to 5 star status and why I won’t be reading more by this author.

I dreaded reading it a little, dragged my feet, bc it’s YA. As in —the MCs are in college... not my thing. There r VERY few books of ppl this age that I like to read. I can prob count them on 1 finger, and it was a novella, and the guy was technically NOT college-aged.

Anyway... there was sex, so it’s not clean YA (thank goodness!) but it was just not terribly riveting. The plot was simple and straightforward. The MCs did not go thru any unnecessary drama. The good sex was a little unbelievable since they;re both virgins and neither has ever kissed anyone else at the age of 18 or 19... so like I said, kinda unbelievable that they’d have explosively good sex the first go around...

But there wasn’t anything really wrong with it either, so 3.5 stars rounded to 4.

Sweet, Emotional & Hot and that cover is just Awesome!

Ezra had my heart right from the begining and I was rooting for him. How he described Kayla the first time he saw her, was beautiful and I started rooting for him.

Kayla's determination to be her own despite not fully knowing who she was or where she came from had me wanting to hug her and high five her. She was a true friend through and through.

When the secret is out and Kayla finds out about Ezra, she does what she has to, to make Ezra see that the feeling is mutual.

"-But I can promise you one thing. You are, and will always be, my favorite thing about life."

A beautiful young love story with imperfect people that were perfect in each others eyes. This story caught my attention right from the start and I could not put it down until the end and what an ending. Kara~5 Stars

This book my friends was freaking amazing! I looooooved it. it just kept getting better and better as I read on till I just couldn't stop smiling....me description

This book has all my young adults to new adult loves. It topped the cake on the last few I have read- I have been on a roll with Ya/Na lately. This had me in my girly feels the love of these two young birds took me back to my hubby and I dating in school Oh that young love. This was so steamy and sweet. I love how this was written the author brought these characters to life for me and I truly felt the love and hurt, the shame the pain, the drama, and the happiness these characters went through. This is a series of books that I read out of order but can be read as a stand-alone.

You will fall so in love with Ezra and Kayla, they both pulled at my heartstrings and their little dog too ;)

Audiobook Review

Overall 5 stars
Performance 5 stars
Story 5 stars

This was just the kind of book my heart was needing! Ezra and Kayla's story was cavity inducing sweet as well as emotional and sexy too! Though this is book 4 in the Good Guys series, it can definitely be enjoyed as a stand alone.

I think what I enjoyed most about Outcast is that it's not a traditional romance. There isn't an over the top, seasoned, alpha hero. In fact, it's very much the opposite at its heart. We get to see the struggles and insecurities of our characters as they navigate new relationships and realities. I loved that from the start, our hero and heroine only have eyes for each other and there isn't any unnecessary drama with OW/OM. I loved both Kayla and Ezra and I celebrated their victories, but hurt for them as well at times. The challenges they face are realistic and honest and I was glad the author addressed these in the story. Ezra and Kayla were so wonderful together and I loved how they were able to experience so many firsts with each other. Don't let all young love sweetness fool you though. There are plenty of scorching scenes between these two and I don't think I will look at a shower seat or automatic car wash the same way ever again! Outcast was as much a love story between Kayla and Ezra, as it was a love story with themselves. They each grew and matured and came into their own and loved themselves exactly as they are - imperfections and all.

Chris Chambers and Elizabeth Hart are new to me narrators, but I thought that they brought Ezra and Kayla to life beautifully. They both had a youthful and vulnerable quality to their performances, that really was perfect for our characters. The epilogue left me smiling ear to ear and you can't go wrong reading and/or listening to this one. Without a doubt, this is my favorite book by Jamie Schlosser!

My favorite type of romance is the unexpected, where love isn't straight forward and easy. A book full of billionaires and success and the girl who snags it all, tanned six-pack included, I won't gravitate to without a reason.

I love to read people who are different in this world chockfull of different, more than same. Isn't that how it is?

In Schlosser's "Outcast" I got to be a part of the struggles of a couple who, separately and together, experienced and overcame real issues. I got a gorgeous portrayal of an animal, to the point of me wanting him in my family! Their road toward their happily-ever-after made me tear up.

I highly recommend this GOOD GUYS book in a book sphere where we get enough bad boys. I do love and write a few flawed ones myself, but damn, it's nice to be hugged by a good guy for once.

Lastly: there are plenty of subtle messages in this book that I want you to look out for. They're rare and stunning without being intrusive:

—The little man isn't little.
—The outcast is anything but.
—Kindness pays off.
—Don't walk past outstretched hands on street corners like they're nothing!

Enjoy, friends. I sure did.

I've really enjoyed all of the books in The Good Guys Series, in fact I've loved all of Jamie Schlosser's books, but Outcast is my favorite. I love it so much that I'm having trouble putting it all into words. First, Jamie writes damn good virgin heroes. First Travis (from TRUCKER) stole my heart, and now Ezra. I loved watching Ezra grow and evolve. I remember thinking of him as a baby alpha, he just needed his girl to help bring it out in him. Kayla was such a fantastic heroine; sweet, kind, loyal. And their families were amazing! (It was nice to see Jimmy again) There were some deep issues explored in this story, and they were done so well, so tastefully, and it was all so emotional. I got choked up many times. Plus, let us not ignore the fact that the sexy times in this story were sweltering hot. I loved, loved, loved this story.

This book is EVERYTHING. I am not sure I could love a couple more than these two. I have such a soft spot for characters with physical flaws or the ones that don't fit in. I adore high school/college romances and first loves. Ezra.... my god, there isn't a sweeter book boyfriend walking around. He just treasures Kayla. By Chapter 2 or 3, I was already so attached to these two characters that I found myself tearing up. I love the underlying message that exists in this story line about bullying, acceptance and standing up to injustice. This will be one of my top reads of the year for sure. Jamie Schlosser is a complete underdog in the indie book world.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY?? GAH! That was just so freaking sweet and adorable and just UGH! EVERYTHING!

I loved this story sooooo much. Ezra is my new favorite Good Guy and guys that heroine? Ahhhhh! I want to keep her! She's such a doll - so insanely like- no LOVEABLE.

I'm just going to say it so it's on record along with everyone else:

Thanks.

It was such a pleasure to read this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My favorite part of this book was its saccharine characters that made it seem so sweet.

It's a feel-good book with heartwarming elements.

Kayla and Ezra are likable characters and it was wonderful to read about their innocence.

This is the kind of book that would be good to sit down and read when you feel like reading something light.

Definitely worth checking out.
