A hot man in an elevator, a shy girl making her way to a new job. A seemingly random attack on the way home to her apartment brings these two together in more ways than one. But unless they can eliminate the danger, they'll never find out what they could be to one another.

I had really high hopes for this book because, while having only read one other story by this author, I was impressed with the amount of great she can pack into short stories. This, however, was a poor showing of what I'm sure she's capable of producing.

We literally know nothing about the male lead except for his name, looks, and that he's a shifter. His job is vague, his background is nil, his thoughts and feelings are never expressed, and his connection to Mary-Ann is never fully explained. They do have quite a bit of chemistry, though that doesn't really make the best foundation for a relationship.

Speaking of a relationship, there's no development or growth there. Getting only Mary-Ann's POV is kind of disappointing, especially because the synopsis is from Alister's side. There's a few mentions during Mary-Ann's confusion during and the morning after their intimate encounter that hints at the idea of something deeper, something elemental, but nothing is ironed out or even described.

There was plenty of drama to bring them together but there was little to no background of magic, stones, species, factions, roles, Mary-Ann's family coming to have the artifact in the first place...so many elements and so little explanation that I just had to pretend I didn't care about the who, why, and how.

Overall the story had great potential but didn't really meet it. The passion was there but the characters weren't compelling as individuals so I didn't feel drawn to them or their relationship. I wish Mary-Ann were more than merely reactionary, stubborn, and content in ignorance. I wish Alister were more than a pair of glowing amber eyes and way, way too many smirks. I wish more focus were given to a clear plot and getting to know the characters to provide depth and interest. Unfortunately, that's not what the ARC contained.

A blend of romance, suspense and danger. An interesting shifter story with plenty of passion and a HEA. I'm posting a totally voluntary, honest review after reading this book.

I tried. A bunch of times. I just can’t finish this one. There was no emotional connection between these characters. When they first get together, sexually, they don’t even have an actual conversation before getting it on. I don’t mind spontaneous lust in my books- just don’t like it when it reads like a manual. ‘Oh, he’s hot, who cares that I got attacked by a stranger who had super human qualities, let’s get naked.’

When the next morning she was getting ready for work, and he tells her not to because ‘danger, and shit?’ She turns into a raging ten year old who figuratively stomps her foot. Instead of telling her to be rational and act like an adult, he tells her to call her dad.... okay, here is a red warning sign, amiright?

How the HELL does this near stranger know her dad enough to make that call? Why the fuck wouldn’t she care about that shit? Why wouldn’t you be pissed that the security officer and your father OBVIOUSLY know why you were attacked the day before, and are keeping that shit from you? But, nope. She was more interested in being right about going to work by herself, because stupid stupid girl.

At this point I’m out. I don’t care if she gets hit by a bus, or eaten by a goddamn T-Rex, (And I friggen love dinosaurs) I’m done reading this. Moving on.

Mary-Ann has just moved to the city for her new job and is in her own world when she notices the hot new security guy at her new job. A co-worker sees how she reacts to the security guy and talks to her about him. After work she watches for the security guy when she goes for the bus but doesn't see him. After she starts walking to home she hears something behind her and the next thing she knows she's being attacked and the guy is wanting something he thinks she has. Alister shows up in time to save Mary-Ann and stays with her at her place for the night. The next day he warns her to stay home but she won't listen to him or her father. On the way to work she gets grabbed by the guy that attacked her the night before. Can Alister save her in time? Why is there people after her?

This is a great story and very well written. The chemistry between Alister and Mary-Ann is off the charts. If you love paranormal books then this book if for you. I can't wait to see what this author writes next.

I read this book as part of an arc program. This was a short story about a young woman named Mary-Ann who moved to the city to start a new job and she sees the security guard Alister and she is attracted to him. When she is on her way home, she keeps seeing Alister along her bus route. Mary-Ann thinks she is imagining seeing him because it is not possible for him to walk faster than her bus. When she is almost home, a man approaches her and demands she hand it over, before she can do anything, Alister comes and fights the man off. They go back to Mary-Ann's apartment and they give into the attraction. The next day, Alister doesn't want Mary-Ann to go to work and tells her to ask her father if she should go. Mary-Ann goes to work, but doesn't make it there. The man from the night before returns and so does the danger. This was a good story and I liked Alister, I thought him and Mary-Ann had great chemistry. Good one.

Maybe 1.5 stars...I started off having a hard time with this story because of how many times Mary-Ann's name is mentioned. Multiple times per paragraph, sometimes per sentence. Total overkill that I found irritating, since it almost interrupted the flow of the reading.
Beyond that, I couldn't really get into the story. The characters and plot were not well developed, making it hard to connect with the characters. This also added to the feeling that that things were contrived, and lacked chemistry. Not a good thing for a romance when the main characters lack chemistry. It is written as if the do, but the writing and lack of development didn't make me believe it. Not even the sex scenes seemed believable, or exciting.
Add to those detractors the ridiculous ending, and you have a romance that reads more like an essay. Not a fan. (reader review copy)

This was a good shifter story, but whether it was the second book in a series? I don't know, but there were certainly a few unanswered quested in the story, which did spoil for me. And I have previously read and reviewed another book by this author that was really good and it didn't leave questions about the storyline hence why I have only given this book three stars (if I do find out it was the second book in a series then I will change my review, but until then, I have no choice but to award just three stars) I want to point out what I found frustrating about the storyline but that will give away to much of the story, which I hate when reviewers do that so to recap it is quite short and easily read in one sitting and is a good shifter story if you can look past the unexplained parts of the story.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I’m a big fan of Ruby’s work and this book is another hit. Mary Ann has just a new job in the city she notices the hot security guard in the building where she works. While Mary Ann is walking home from work she gets attacked, Alister comes a long and saves her and he takes her back to her place and stays the night. Alister warns Mary Anne not to go to work the next day but she refuses and on her way to work gets attacked again, will Alister save her this time and what are the secrets that Alister hiding from Mary Ann?, well if you want to know then you need to get this book so if I don’t stop here then I will tell you. Great plot and characters and I recommend this book it’s well worth the read.

Mary-Ann is starting her new life with a new job in a new town. While things seem to be going great, Mary-Ann is about to find out not all is what it seems. When danger comes calling, the sexy Alister is there to save her. Will he be able to protect Mary-Ann? Will she believe and accept his secret? Although there were points that seemed to be repeated, this was a very nice read. Ms. Forrest seems to be gaining "strength" with each new story.

An enjoyable well written short story with lots of potential for a great story. The storyline is nice and the plot also. Character likeable but sometimes Mary-Ann is very stubborn and naive. I was annoyed that the author used her name a lot. Alister is very likeable and I found him to be well described and that he develops nicely.
Mary-Anns characters lacks depth and description of her past. It sometimes gets confusing. The story also has some lack of depth aorund the tread towards the heroin.
But it is an enjoyable read and it has lots of potential.

received an ARC of this one

Almost didn't put a star on this one. I'm hoping that all the editing issues will be solved before this one ever releases for sale.
Also, even though this book is in third person POV, we only get to see the female main character. The story doesn't flow smoothly, especially Mary-Ann's inner monologue in the first half. And there are several things that are never explained. The story left me almost confused and that is not a good way for a book to leave a reader.

First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.

This story was gr8. Mary-Ann is a shy young woman just starting her life after high school graduation. She meets Alistair who works security at her building. Things move pretty quickly from there and there's lots of danger going on. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up.

This book had a good storyline, but there were so MANY errors that it made it hard to read; too many interruptions. There were misspellings, missing letters, improper word forms, and missing words altogether. I almost felt like I was grading a work from a 12 year old.

If the editing could be improved, this would be a terrific story.

The magic rock and the missing artifact

This book should have proofreading as the main objective. The errors start on page one and continue on. The first time the characters make love the entire paragraph is copied to a later time when Mary Ann is dreaming. Too many errors for me to recommend.

Good

This was interesting. A little different than other books about shifters that I have read, but still interesting. The story doesn't give much in the way of an introduction into the characters. It just jumps right into the action and I felt left trying to piece the details together. If this becomes a series, then I will think twice before I buy another one.

Good book

This is the first time reading this author. I really enjoyed Maryann’s and Alister’s story. At a point in this story it finally explains why they met and what had to be done. Can’t wait to read the next book.

Wolf Protector

I was wondering to myself if her dad knew all along what the necklace was for and if her mom was the previous keeper. She was so lucky if fell into place when it did and that wolf didn't get her.

This...

This story starts with a young lady with a new job, in a new town, far from home. The action and intrigue are there from the start, but could have used a bit more definition. Overall, a good story.

Great shifter story

This book was great it keeps you guessing as to what is going on in-the story. This story gets very intense at some points but it is still a great book.
