DAMAGED is a volume of short stories, vignettes and a novella. They are not war stories, but in fact are postwar stories that show the results of the men and women who participate in war and in violent law enforcement encounters. The characters and stories are fictional, however they are based on events known to the writer in which he participated or was told of by participants. While the stories portray the effects of violence from Gettysburg to Kabul, there are tragic love stories, stories of revenge and closure. Several of the stories are related to Hess’ first two novels, Ambush and Gamble, and several of the characters from them return showing us not only the effects they suffered but the inner workings of his previous novels. Through the stories, vignettes and novella, DAMAGED gives everyone an insight of PTSD and how it creeps into the mind and soul of those involved in war and law enforcement.
