Cherringham #29

The Drowned Man

Rate this book
Accidents happen to Charley Clutterbuck. Always just scraping by, living on his ramshackle boat, not above the dodgy deal here and there ... So when his body is found floating down river, accidental drowning seems the logical conclusion. But Charley's pal Ray thinks it's murder. And when Jack and Sarah get involved ... they find themselves facing an unexpected danger as they uncover the strange truth.

Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa.

Co-authors Neil Richards (based in the UK) and Matthew Costello (based in the US), have been writing together since the mid 90's, creating content and working on projects for the BBC, Disney Channel, Sony, ABC, Eidos, and Nintendo to name but a few. Their transatlantic collaboration has underpinned scores of TV drama scripts, computer games, radio shows, and - most recently - the successful crime fiction series Cherringham.

Charlie Clutterbuck lives on a dilapidated boat moored at Iron Wharf, just downriver from Cherringham. He scrapes a living and is notorious locally for drink and drugs. When his body is found in the river, well over the limit, it’s an open and shut case as far as the police are concerned. Death by misadventure. Charlie’s friend Ray isn’t so sure. Not after what he’d witnessed in The Ploughman’s.

Ray is Jack’s neighbour, living on a nearby barge, and has done Jack a favour or two in the past, which makes Jack feel obliged to at least make initial enquiries. Doubts are raised when Jack and Sarah begin asking questions and even more so when they take a look round Charlie’s boat.

Jack Brennan, a retired NYPD homicide Detective, relocated to the Cotswold village of Cherringham after his wife died. They had always planned to retire to the UK and live on a boat, so Jack decided to fulfil the dream and now lives on an old Dutch barge moored at Cherringham, with his dog Riley.

Sarah Edwards, a web designer, returned to Cherringham with her two children when her husband left her for his boss. She now runs her own company. She and Jack are great friends as well as the local unofficial mystery solvers. They had no idea that life in a sleepy English village would present so many challenges.

Hörbuchrezension

+ + Unfall oder Mord - - für Jack und Sarah geht's in die Luft [#29]

Laufzeit: 3 Std. 45 Minuten - - Sprecherin: Sabina Godec

Old Charlie Clutterbuck was well-known as a drunk, drug user, and general screw up. When he was found floating in the Thames, it was easy to assume he fell in the river and drowned after a heavy night's drinking but his friend Ray is certain it was murder so he goes to Jack asking for help. Now Ray himself isn't the most reliable person, but Jack owes him a favor and with Sarah, decides to look into the matter. Things quickly aren't adding up as Jack and Sarah investigate. Why is there blood on Charlie's barge deck? Why was Charlie suddenly throwing around wads of money? Who was threatening him in the loo the night he died and why? The clues lead to a number of scary possibilities as Jack and Sarah look for Charlie's murderer.

Charley Clutterbuck has drowned. BUT was it an accident or murder? That’s left up to Jack and Sarah to figure out AND to find out what’s happening at the Longmead Dairy Farm. Why is the smell of fuel so strong if all they’re doing is raising cattle?

Another fun mystery involving Cherringham and the two super sleuths that live there…

Charlie's Mystery Money

Once again an exciting adventure for Jack and Sarah. The death of Charlie Clutterbuck looked like an accident but it just did not set right his friend Ray. Charlie had a lot of money the night of his death, Ray knew there was something behind it and he knew just who to go to for help. Read another episode and see if you can guess the killers.

A good book to listen too when you clean the house. It gives you ”Midsomer murders” wibes. It is fun to try to figure out how the guilty person is. Jack is a retired cop from US, Sarah is a singel mom and they solves crime together. This one was about a murder.
