Sato executes his plan to take control over Japan... in 2 hours’ time.

One player leaves, an old one is on his way. Unsuspected newcomers are there too. Will the anti-Ajin squad give a hand?

Tension mounts... a bit slowly. Lots of pages are 2 panels only. Looks like delayed action.

Seeing some of the older characters back in action was a welcome sight. The protagonists finally been their move, which was intriguing to watch, but the anticipation ever remains that their work is easier said than done.

Turns out Sato is a"one-trick pony", how sad.
But the return of Kaito is nice.
Also laughed when the Anti-Demis shot Nagai after first knocking him out 😆

Gamon Sakurai’s Ajin: Demi-Human is one of the more memorable series I’ve discovered in the last few years. As a horror-thriller it’s very effectively paced, and the action is consistently enjoyable. Add in an oppression metaphor that’s handled more interestingly than the X-Men ever have been and you have a manga well worth your time. Vol. 13 just came out, and it details Sato’s ultimate plan to take over Japan. Is this volume good?

There’s a lot to appreciate about the art here, especially where the characters are concerned. This is one of those rare series where every single character truly has unique features and doesn’t just adhere to the same style template as most of the rest of the cast. From the bridges of noses to cheek depth to furrowing brows, there’s a lot of attention paid to making people look instantly distinguishable from one another. This all helps make the manga’s world feel all the more real and the events, by extension, feel more plausible. This uniqueness continues to extend to the Ajins’ IBMs as well. Though they’re more visually uniform than the humans, they all still have slight variations to match their casters’ unique temperaments.

The visuals’ polish also extend to the perspective, sound effects, and splash pages. There are a number of great shots and panel sequences dramatically highlighting sudden physical movements and changes in distance. The most memorable of these is a set of two adjacent splash pages depicting a man standing in a building and looking out the window. He sees a fighter jet heading right for him; in the first panel it’s small and in the distance, but in the second it’s right outside the window and only fractions of a second away from crashing. The tension here is fantastic as Sakurai does an excellent job conveying that specific split-second of terror. Most of the volume’s splash pages and two-page spreads work in similar ways, highlighting pivotal reveals and transitions. Even the sound effects get incorporated effectively with fonts and placements varying to reflect the intensity of the noises in question.

The writing throughout is on point as well. Sato’s final plan is thrilling to watch unfold as it combines both merciless cunning and creative uses of his powers. There’s a real sense that no one could ever pull it off but him, and the plot grows naturally from the series’s unique paranormal conceits. The pace at which information is revealed is also great. The reader mostly figures out details as Kei pieces them together, adding a fun sense of mystery and deduction to the horror. The character writing is also effective; all the major players have well-defined personalities and bounce off each other in compelling ways.

All in all, Ajin: Demi-Human Vol. 13 is a great read. There’s the occasional minor clarity issue here and there, but otherwise everything is polished and exciting to follow. The action is well-paced and the art is fantastic, especially where the characters are concerned. If you’re into supernatural thrillers then this series is not one to miss.

Extrait :

File 58: Sato delivers a video message why he has killed so many at the base and that in 2 hours all of the government will disappear in the last wave. Separately, Nakano and the firefighter awake Okuyama from being tranquillised. He’s gives them a phone as a sign he also has abandoned Sato and begins destroying all trace of his existence.

File 59: Politicians and army generals are in the Diet building (parliament) finding a way to stop Sato’s threat. Separately, in the bunker where the Prime Minister is Sato kills the PM and his guards. Kei Nagai (who is inside the base but hidden) realises Sato’s plan that he’ll take a fighter plane but can’t do anything to stop him. TV helicopters spot Kei and again mistake him for being with Sato.

File 60: A deputy chief is destroying all papers on the Anti-Demi-Human forces. Meanwhile Sato flys the plane to the Diet building and blows himself on impact, killing all 5 PM replacements. Before the flight he had cut his arm off so when his body blows up he reappears at the base with Gen and Takahashi (to do it all over again with another site). General Kouma gives the approval for the Anti-Demi-human forces to start an offensive. The deputy general tries to stop him by shooting him (but misses).

File 61: Kei Nagai relays his plan to capture Sato’s severed arm (in between his missions to blow up sites) and bury it in a hole in the ground (like sewage pipe) so that when her emerges he is stuck. The phone that Okuyama gave Nakano and the firefighter (now known as Akiyama) has the geolocations of Sato’s guys so they can go track them down. Kei Nagai is spotted by Sato’s followers on the grounds of the base. The Anti-Demi-Human forces come down and rescue Kei from Sato’s followers who were closing in on him with gunfire.

File 62: Nakano and Akiyama arrive at one of the points on the GPS map that Okuyama provided off the phone he gave. They arrive at a street but fired at instantly. Akiyama is cornered in a room with one of Sato’s followers. Separately Izumi and Tanaka go to another of the points from Okuyamas phone and find them in front of 2 IBM’s controlled by one of Sato’s followers. Separately, Kai is in prison but escapes with the offer from one of his fellow inmates that has a flying IBM.

The Anti-Demi Human Squad has dropped in, so I'm stoked to see what happens with them. We're heading towards the final confrontation with this volume moving things along quite fast. Sato is destroying government and industry buildings with fighter jets and getting reborn after each attack. Kei's friend from the beginning is on the run to help out, (his whole deal feels a bit superfluous up to now), and then we have Tanaka and Shimomura fighting a demi-human, and firefighter and Kei's friend knock off also fighting one. The hunt is on for Sato's arm.

This volume was an insane amount of action and surprises. *Spoiler Alert* (thid book has been out for awhile, but just in case). Sato's plan is revealed, and it's horrifying and ingenious, and really just as amazing as I expected Sato's plan to be. Nagai figuring out Sato's plan and then coming up with his brilliant counter-plan: honestly, I don't remember breathing much during this volume. The real shock to me were the IBMs: the pair, and then the flying one. It just keeps getting better.

For my taste, it takes a little too long, but we get a cool new demi-human strategy and Satos plan starts to show. But it seems to be really good preparation for a final showdown.

And the deus ex machina that was preparing during multiple issues? Good entrance!

Sato's plan of taking out all important Japanese authorities in two hours is put into play.

This volume is full of action. Kei continues to almost be smart enough to out-think Sato. His plan to contain him (when and if Sato's captured) is devious. I'll definitely be reading more in the series.

Sato plans to take down every government / institution building by crashing fighter jets into them.

Finally, Anti-Demi Human squad consisting of 5 was ordered into action. Let's see what they can do.

That scene where Anti-Demi humans surround themselves around Kei was so cool!

Another great volume in which we see how smart and badass Satou is. On the other side, there is Nagai-kun who is trying to beat Satou.
