How far would you go for revenge? Veronica Bauer isn’t above homicide. Twelve years after a ruthless attack killed her mother and put her father in prison, she embarks on a mission to bring the real culprits to justice. As bodies start to drop, Detective Sheila Arden is assigned to the gruesome case, but she soon discovers that the truth is more complicated than she thought. In a riveting game of cat and mouse, each woman challenges the other to reach new heights.
Alexandria Clarke is a writer, cat lover, and all-around optimist. She loves to immerse her readers in mystery and intrigue, meaningful friendships, and the worlds of characters who learn by doing. When she's not writing, Alex enjoys playing guitar, watching Wynonna Earp, and spending time with her family. She currently lives in Orlando, Florida with her partner and their four pets.
Weird story, what are the chances that your killer is the same person you saved 12 years ago to be murdered and you didn’t tell anybody. Now you are a detective, saw the girl, still know that she is alive and not dead as the main investigator thinks and you still say nothing ........weird. In the end you even let her go .......more weird.
I don’t typically read mysteries but thus one sounded interesting! A very intriguing and fast paced story. The characters are easy to follow, it’s a very believable and page turning read! I couldn’t put it down until I was done.
This was a good book. Some page-turning, some slower parts, written well, good characters, interesting personalities, suspense, action and a good ending. Great for the anytime read or passing time.
When a young girl, Veronica, is witness to her mother's murder and then is herself raped by a group of men, she's forever changed. In fact, she becomes an avenging killer.
The story takes some very dark turns with the young rookie cop offering up the lighter and more optimistic scenes. There are some surprising twists with the connection between the young cop and Veronica, the entry of the father who turns out to be much different than expected, and an ending that releases Veronica from her demons.
Unfortunately, I had trouble relating to the characters and some difficulty accepting Veronica as a violent killer. The rogue cop turned killer also didn't resonate with me. On a different level, the book needed another round of edits to eliminate the typos--there were several.
I was captivated by the book until the final chapter. I wrote a Goodreads review on a Samsung Tablet. Why that review did not appear here, also, I do not understand! The book befuddled my mind with all its computer software and hacking and people who are dead but are really alive and killing people who needed killing. I am baffled and confused. Read the book and share with me what you think.
The book is an engrossing, fascinating, spinetingling adventure that takes the reader from revenge killings through strong friendships to fighting for justice all in one breathtaking journey! It is the story of Veronica Bauer/Vee/Virginia Burton as she struggles to find her own identity after a very traumatic incident in which her mother is killed with the help of a kind-hearted girl !
How Vee manages to overcome all the terrifying hurdles in her path with the help of her friends Detective Arden and Juli to arrive at a serene lifestyle forms the content of this exhilarating, extraordinary book with a compelling narrative along with winsome and adorable characters.
Best book I have had the pleasure of reading in recent times!!!
Clarke has written a book that is very hard to put down. The night of the Bauer Technology Charity Gala is the last night that Vivian, Wallace and Veronica Bauer will ever be a family. Ten men break into their apartment with. rape and murder on their minds. Twelve years later, Detective Sheila Arden is assigned to her first murder case in which she recognizes Veronica, the poor girl she rescued many years ago. It is wrong, but Sheila just can't stop feeling sorry for the girl.
Detectives Shelia Arden & Payne brought all the excitement to the story because of their constant bickering over how to handle the murders of several rich tech businessmen. The men are being hunted down one by one and slashed to death. But one officer holds secrets to the killings and is an aide to Veronica Bauer, the hunter. I would recommend this book for readers of crime thriller 📚. And I plan to read more works by this author Alexandria Clarke.
Though I don't condone violence found myself hoping this young woman finds the men who raped both herself and murdered her mother. A to familiar storey of men violating women with out consequences for their filthy actions. One woman stands alone to give judgement. A powerful read and well written.A storey for all women who have failed to find justice in the hands of the demented boys club. 😔 Kat
I did not like this tale as much as I’d hoped, when I started reading it.
There’s a pretty straight trajectory that this story follows, but it has so many holes and gaps in it — they detract from the intended plot.
“The Father”, for instance, is a huge puzzle … first, in that he admitted to a crime he did not execute, then he later becomes a fairly obsessed and crazy person.
“The Daughter” is pretty much of the same character, except she commits murders against people she perceives as having ruined her life. All of THAT is fine and dandy, ‘til she gets a conscience and actively fights against her Father.
And, overall, there’s far too much super-capabilities of certain people getting stabbed and cut by knives, but only their victims actually get killed — not them! And these same special folks live in a world of the super-rich, with entrances into buildings that only master villains would understand.
Overall, I’d recommend NOT picking up this book to read; it’ll just be a waste of your time and effort, when you could be spending your leisure enjoying a better book.
Twelve years after a ruthless attack killed her mother, shredded her, and put her father in prison, Veronica Bauer wreaks havoc and vengeance on the culprits. And she’s not above homicide in bringing the perps down. Detective Sheila Arden is assigned the case, but she discovers the truth and motivations are more complicated than her hidebound coworkers can understand. The women begin a dance that takes them both places they don’t want to go.
Wow, wow, wow, this was a powerful read. Graphically dark, compelling, hard read, but with well-drawn characters that made me care a lot more than I normally would for a serial killer and some of the “victims”. I very much liked both Veronica and Sheila. Watching how they conducted their business kept me riveted to the story and made the time on the elliptical fly by.
I’m sad this isn’t a series. Logically I don’t know how you could expand the lifecycle of Veronica Bauer, but I really liked these two characters and I want more. I see the author is a prolific writer, with several series to her credit, and I will be checking those out.
I must have read a different book considering all these 5 star reviews. This was just plain ridiculous. I do not mind giving some room for creative license and believing some extraordinary situations/ relationships, however, throw me SOME pieces of realism!
15 year old young woman becomes cop later in life cop after helping”/saving raped, beaten teenager from horrific night. Never tells anyone. Victim runs away next morning never to be seen again.
Young woman becomes cop. Runs into “saved” teenager, now a young woman, turned vengeful murderer. Cop hunting murderer. Murderer is understandable “damaged” and able to commit murder while Cop DOES NOT turn in murderer.
This “book” is one long ridiculous, unbelievable ride to happily ever after where a cop and murderer are besties at the end. Apparently for some this is feasible. Please do NOT bother with this one.

A pizza girl came into a posh penthouse one (1) night to find a woman on the couch lay dead and saved a struggling young girl from a brutal attack. Twelve years later, their paths crossed--An assassin who avenges a gruesome past. And a police detective working on the case.
Will Detective Sheila Arden succeed in putting Veronica Bauer behind bars?
Two women from different sides of the tracks whose lives keep intersecting. When they first met, one was a pizza delivery girl and the other was the daughter of a very wealthy technology guru, now one is an assassin avenging an horrendous past, and the other is the detective assigned to hunt her down.
This book was excellent. The characterizations were believable, and the story kept me absorbed from start to finish. I can't wait to read the next book.
This book was an awesome mystery. How this girl survived all of her injuries was amazing. The connection between the detective and Viv made for a better story. I enjoyed all the mystery, drama and psychological connection with rape. Some of the actions of Viv was a little hard to swallow. I would recommend this book to my friends. It does make for a good read. Fast moving and hard to put down.
Just the right amount of horror, tension, and stress to make a satisfying read. I loved the way it started and ended. And everything in between. The character development played a large role in making this story come to life. While scene setting wasn’t over done by a long shot, it’s minimalist approach kept the story moving at a quick pace. I would and will read more work from this author.
I admit I was hesitant to read this book cause I quickly noticed how it jumped from one character to another with every chapter and I easily loose track of following what's going on with books of this nature; however I'm so glad I didn't cause it only jumped been the two main characters and held my attention so well, I couldn't forget what was going on between them. In fact, I couldn't put the thing down. A great read with a great ending. Read
The book was fabulous, whether it could really happen or not is unimportant it’s a story for your enjoyment. People act like these stories have to eco real life, there a story people. Also the going on and on about a missed spelled word or use of one or if a comma is in the wrong place is also ridiculous, please just keep reading and enjoy rather than condemning. This story was great and I kept reading every chance I got. Thanks to the author keep up the good work.
For some reason I thought this was a cozy mystery. Thrilling and clean. It was very thrilling but not so clean. No sex, thank goodness but enough filthy words I wanted to wash my eyes out to blur the words. Do people, especially police, really talk that dirty? The "F" word ran freely throughout the whole book, but I wanted to keep reading for the story. Sorry, won't be getting anymore of her books.
I enjoyed this book, the characters were well developed and the storyline interesting. There were some holes in the plot line, where it felt a little sloppy (don't want to give any spoilers, but some of the choices and behaviors of the characters seemed rather stilted and out of place, like they were there simply to help the author get to the next part of the story, and conflicting with other parts of the story where they acted in a different manner). A little gory, but overall a page turner!
From page one I was intrigued. I love a book that I can’t figure out and this was a stumper! Felt like Vee and Sheila were sisters and I wanted to protect them from evil Wallace. Well thought out and beautifully written. Now I need to look for more by this author.
Starts Very Slow, does pickup, but perty much usual abused child out for revenge story. Writer goes on and on with going over the past. Ends in Cliffhanger (which I personally Hate, way to force customers into buying next book even if they do not really want to). I already own the next Audible book so will listen to it. Narrator does a good job on the voices and storyline though.
A 17 year old is a witness to her mother's murder and is raped then saved by a stranger delivering pizza. Their meeting is revived after 12 years where the bond made is renewed with deadly consequence for city powerbrokers. This would make a movie I'd like to see. 😊
Wow! This book was amazing! A horrible event caused a chain of reactions and murders that have the police stumped. Detective Sheila Arden is working the case and finds herself involved with something she never imagined. I couldn’t put this one down! Looking forward to more by this author.
Mother and daughter, home from a event. All they wanted to do is order pizza, watch an movie and take off the party clothes and just relax. What happened next no one should ever experience. What happened that night molded her and the girl that helped her saved her. The connection bonded them for life.
Loved this book. This is my favorite genre but I wasn’t expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. Great story idea that I hadn’t read before. Both heroines do their jobs while deciding right and wrong the entire time. The book is also very funny in conversation with Arden and Payne.
Wow Sheila and Veronica come from two different worlds but their lives keep crossing and although they finally meet up again which I can't wait to read the next book by this excellent author
Was ok. Didn't hold my interest though😕. Passing up on review. Too too much. Drags on and on. Not recommending to friends or family. Perhaps next novel will be more interest
