Looks at a variety of beads produced around the world, discusses their religious and social aspects, and describes beaded clothing in primitive societies. Reprint.
I have had this book since 1995 or so. I cajoled a used book store owner to put it on a 3 day layaway for me while I scrambled for the money to buy. It was a book I wanted desperately, but could not afford to buy new. I've gotten a lot of joy out of this book over the years. The many color photos are alone worth the price.
Finally, I decided to actually READ the text. It is a physically difficult book to read as it is oversized and therefore heavy. Since I tend to read while sitting reclined in a recliner, the size and weight of this book makes reading physically "interesting".
It has been worth all the struggle to read this book! It gives, as far as possible, the history of humanity's fascination with beaded adornment. From the earliest possible beads found in archaeological sites around the world to modern art beads, this book covers almost everything up to its publication date in 1987.
Beads have been around for over 10,000 years. This informative book covers the history of where beads and jewelry started and how they made their way onto our wrists, necks, ankles and ear lobes in current day fashion.
This is the kind of book where you just sit and drool over the pictures. Some great time lines shown and it demonstrates the amazing variety of beads through the ages. We humans really are quite inventive.
