Go on a journey of discovery in this innovative pop-up book that includes the lush rain forest, a mysterious underwater kingdom and the secret world beneath the streets. Under the snowy mountain, animals have dug burrows in which to hibernate, and deep under the ground you can find hidden treasures such as ancient artifacts and dinosaur fossils.
Clive Gifford is a highly experienced journalist and author with over 170 books published and more than 800 features and stories written for adults and children.
Clive is an unusual author who likes to work in both fiction and non-fiction. Perhaps this reflects his unusual life which, so far, has seen him travel to over 70 countries, be held hostage in Colombia, go parachuting, coach several sports and run a computer games company.
He says: "What drives me more than anything else is the desire to communicate, entertain and inform through the written word."
Beautiful and full of interactive moments. Just wish there had been a guide for some of the more unique animal names (although context clues helped with most)
A pop-up picture book that explores the deep world below; looking at what is underneath the rainforest canopy, what is going on under snowy fields, the treasures under an archaeological dig in the desert, an exploration of the depths of the ocean and a glimpse into the world beneath a busy city. Each double page spread opens up to show a vista of activity in a pop-up format that leaps out from every page, opening up, out and down in a feat of paper engineering. There is a simple explanation of the scene but most of the information is held in the multi-layered illustrations that contain lots of details to explore and talk about, with each location being very different, in both colour and situation. A great introduction to the world’s biomes and environments, enabling children to explore their differences as well as similarities. Aimed at KS1, children both older and younger would delight in this book and it leads easily into further discussion about each location and the related activities.
5 stars because the concept and execution is awesome. The pop-up's don't pop-up. They pop-out and down. With only 5 scenes, it's a short book, but the diversity in the scenes is great.
