Perhaps because I was further along in my own understanding of the coaching skills and tools, this book felt very textbook like and didn't flow for my liking.

Swashbooked, 10 minutes + discussion, Christmas 2012, with @ipreuss.

Why I picked it: Picked by Ilja. And because, well, that's what I do. I think I saw it on Amazon or recommended somewhere.

Notes:

Hardcover. Small print but easy to read, beautiful paper, easy to hold.

Back cover: "combines the wisdom of over 20 experienced leadership coaches and educators... essays on what it means to 'be' a coach, what coaches 'do' and tools that coaches 'use'... two entwined tracks: coaching leaders and being a leader, offering illustrations and practical approaches..."

Authors are from the Georgetown University Leadership Coaching program (isn't that a co-active method program? must look into that!)

Organisation: 3 parts: Being. Doing. Using.

Being. (seems a good source of coach reflective reading)
* p16: how does a coach get in shape for creating sacred space? (meditation, walking, journaling, running, reading, tai-chi...)

Doing. (cool - stories of how others are doing it)
* Ch 7: Using Story in Coaching.
* Other topics: celebrating "breakdown", using Somatics to coach Leaders...

Using. (looks good but we did not scan it deeply. Practices, exercises to use).

Discussion:

* surprised it was essays and not a single book.
* Doing: Expected something more like "how do I move from general coaching to leadership coaching?" but this information was missing. Much seems to be generally about coaching.
* "Being" section: might make good bedtime or meditative reading for a coach. Self-development, to help one remain intentional in one's practice of coaching.
* Interesting concept from "Using": "ALIFE" Authenticity, Leadership, Intentionality, Fear/Courage, Execution. Gives ways a coach can listen and hook into a client's desires. Ex: client wants more authenticity... coach can help with this (similar to "Fulfillment" in Co-Active coaching).

Decision:

* Deb: want to read chapter on Story in Coaching, and the one on Somatics (to refresh or develop further what I learned in Ontological coaching). I am curious about the "Using" section, which looks like a toolkit. Must investigate.
* Ilja: want to read more, maybe not all. Especially ALIFE tool & G.R.A.C.E. method.
