Sarah Vaughn is an artist, writer, over-thinker. She's penciled Sparkshooter and is currently working with Jonathan Luna on Alex + Ada for Image Comics.
I'll blame my present foray into the Game of Thrones universe for my newfound love of tournaments, but this got bonus love from me because it featured a tournament (and it featured it well!) Another thing I love about these creators is they've utilized subtly in the graphic medium and that's not something most comics bother to try, let alone pull off successfully. When Poppy yells for her champion(s) to "deliver" it was a message that meant to things for two different characters and there was no extra help to explain that. I like when the writer likes to assume the reader will be smart enough to pick up on such cues. It makes the story much more a conversation with the reader and extra rewarding.
(I'm experimenting with a personal checklist in order to understand what I look for in the genre. This got 35.25/50)

Another solid installment in the Sleepless series. This time around we hone in on the personal drama and political machinations that loosely bind the kingdom together - and are on the brink of coming undone! A little slower than the first two issues, perhaps, but not lacking in story or interest. Some more sparks flying between Poppy and Cyrenic, but not all of them are definitively positive. Murder plots, diplomatic strategy, flirtations, deceptions, and jealousy abound in this issue. Not to mention more of that beautiful, beautiful Del Duca artwork!
Read this if you like: graphic novels, warriors who don't need sleep, illegitimate princesses, faraway lands, beautifully patterned textiles (!), court intrigues, assassination attempts, seers
The premise of a sleepless vow for a knight is beyond far fetched. Sheer curiosity compelled me. I liked the diversity, I liked the pictures, if they had a good plot, they'd be right on time.
