Ryan Blake is off limits. She is everything I shouldn't want, but do.

She's my best friend's sister, so feelings for her are out of the question. Her passion and fire trigger a spark in the dark hollows of my heart.

Now she's turning eighteen, and my resolve is starting to wear thin. I know I don’t deserve her, but I can't walk away.

No matter how my heart aches for her, I know I'll tear her heart in two.

TORN and TATTERED are companion novellas to the Heart's Compass series. You do NOT need to read the Heart's Compass books in order to enjoy the Tattered Heart duet.

"I just wanted to help heal him, but in the end he broke me."

I've had some internal discussions with me on how to rate this book. On the one hand I enjoyed reading it, on the other I wish some things had been done different. I know this is "only" a novella and therefore it can't deep dive in certain topics or make a huge roll-out of the whole story-line. However the most important thing that IMO was missing, is the part where Ryan and Maverick fall in love. Maybe it's there, but I didn't feel it.

"She was my mirage of walking contradictions..."

Ryan is a very complex character and I think a novella doesn't do her justice. We get only a glimpse here and there why she is the way she is and her love for sketching. I love that she's witty and independent, but I don't feel her connection to her twin brother Dean. That's kind of sad as twins always have a special connection.

"He's always had the ability to take my breath away, feeling like the wind was knocked out of me."

Maverick - to the outside world he seems to stand for trouble even though he's no bad boy. He's grounded but defined by loss. He's loving and caring and always tries to do the right thing, to do what's expected. As well as Ryan he's complex and I wish we could dive deeper into his mind.

"I'm scared that I'll never be able to heal my torn heart because I know he'll be the only one who can."

Torn has great potential within the lines and Brooke gave us a great introduction into the world of Ryan and Maverick. Maverick struggling to find his worth and Ryan who's brave enough trying to help him even if it means tearing up her heart. A forbidden love which seems to have no chance for an happy ending.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

What a sweet coming of age novella.

This story is a best friend in love with the friend's sister. Maverick has been secretly in love with his friend's sister for a while. And now that she is turning 18 all games are off.

Ryan is turning 18 and feels that she can finally show her feelings to Maverick. And just when she does, he decides he needs to make a better life for himself.

This is a duet and does end on a cliffhanger. I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy for my honest review.

What’s worse than falling in love with your best friend’s sister? How about keeping it to yourself and hoping that things work out? Torn by Brooke O’Brien tells the story of two people so clearly in love that they’ve reached their own breaking point.

Maverick’s been in love with Ryan, his best friend Dean’s twin sister, since the day he first met her. As hard as he tries he can’t keep his feelings hidden form her forever. With a disastrous family life, he seeks comfort in Dean’s family and Ryan’s presence. The internal struggle of wanting to tell Ryan how he really feels and not wanting to get punched in the face by Dean’s over protective side causes an internal war that Maverick deals with daily. On the night of Dean and Ryan’s 18th birthday, actions are taken that will change everyone’s lives

Ryan isn’t your typical girl. This tomboy turned girly girl knows how to make all of the boys want her without ever going too far with a guy. With an intense over protective brother that scares off any boy that gets within a 5-foot radius, Ryan has had to learn to get creative. Not that she’s ever had to as her heart already belongs to someone; Maverick. He tries to hide it but she’s picked up on the attention he gives her, and she isn’t completely hiding her interest either. The night of her 18th birthday, Ryan decides to see just how far she can push him and maybe, just maybe, can finally get him to make a move.

I would give this book 3 out of 5 stars. This romance is sweet but with a sexy side that can be seen coming from a mile away (I mean bad boy and good girl plus best friend and best friend’s sister, recipe for a love story). The story line moves rather quickly and with the chapters alternating perspectives, the reader gets full coverage of this story. Torn is the first book in a three-part series that seems promising to only heat up as it goes along, bring with it more heart aching drama for them.

"My heart feels like it's been torn in two. In that moment, I make a promise to myself never to forget this feeling. I'll carry the tattered pieces of my heart with me..."

And here I am, crying my eyeballs out after just finishing Torn. This book turned out to be all that Brooke promised us and more. It left me craving more - THANK FREAKING GOD, that I have the e-arc of Tattered on the kindle otherwise I'd go even more ballistic after reading this ending and knowing I won't be able to read on, lol - and it left me with a torn heart - the title of this book couldn't have been more SPOT ON.

I was already impressed - understatement - when reading Brooke's debut novel last year (Where I found You) and the second book (Lost before You) and I've been waiting very impatiently to get my hands on something new from this author. Opening up my Kindle this morning and seeing that Brooke sent the Tattered Heart books to me, made my whole freaking weekend so it takes no genius to know that I dropped everything else I was reading and started reading Torn. And it was a one-sitting read, you guys. If not for the fact that I HAD to spend some family time, I would've locked myself up and not come out of hiding until I finished this book haha. Thank god, I'm able to start book 2 right away because I NEED IT SO MUCH. I feel so very raw at this moment - I literally just finished the book - and broken and hurt and full of love and dfhgbjrhebgbSDF I just need to read on.
---
"Maybe I'm paranoid but I know when we cross this line, there will be no going back. We won't be able to safely go back into whatever we are at this moment or even before last night. Truth be told, I'm too far gone now. There's a peace that has come from being near Ryan. The fire inside her lit something in me that has been cold and dark for a long time."

Brooke has such a great writing talent I think. She's able to get me hooked to the characters and the story-line in no time - If I could literally climb into the books and live there, I would, really - and just as with the first two books of the Hearts Compass series, I was yet again completely and utterly lost inside this book. I feel such a strong emotional connection to Brooke's writing and it's really hard to put into words how amazing her reads are.

I had a feeling where the story was heading to, definitely knowing there's a sequel, but that didn't lessen the feeling of my poor fangirl-heart breaking at the spot when the moment was there for it to be broken, the moment I was waiting for.

"I went from knowing Maverick as my brother's best friend and my high school crush to feeling something more with him. Something deeper than I have ever felt before and it scares me. What scares me the most is the fear that when I wake up when he's gone and moved on with his life, that I'll be left with only the memories of what it felt like to be in his arms. I'm afraid of ever knowing what it will be like to love again. Even more, I'm scared that I'll never be able to heal my torn heart because I know he'll be the only one who can."

I'm invested in Maverick. What a great character he is and I feel SO MUCH for him; sadness and anger about his situation, I feel broken and above all, I feel so much Love for him already and I can't wait to see what his character development in the next one will be like.

Ryan 'Rebel' was a relatable character I think. I love her feistiness and the fact that she just feels like a 'girl next door' kinda girl, who definitely could be a best friend of mine if she would be a real person. I'm very intrigued to see what her character will go through in the next one. In this one, there was nothing I could do besides just enjoying the moment and loving every second Ryan experienced with Maverick and I was right there with her when her heart got blown to hell. And maybe I should've waited writing this review now because my freaking feels are all over the place but I needed to write it now because I want to get on with Tattered RIGHT AFTER placing this review, lol. But now I feel like I'm just ranting and fangirling all over the place without actually letting you guys know why exactly I love this 5-star story so much, lol.
---
Bottom Line;

If you're familiar with Brooke's writing, you already know what I'm talking about and why I love her writing in this third book by her so much as I did with her other work prior to this, so there's probably not much explaining needed, lol.

And if you aren't familiar with Brooke's writing yet, I just need to say: BUY HER BOOKS. READ HER BOOKS AND YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE - This author's writing was insta-love to me and I don't think she's able to disappoint me, ever. Sure, you need your tissues, lol, but they're so worth it! Okay, so I'm going to read Tattered now, bye bye! Don't forget to add this book to your Kindle and/or buy your printed copy because when this book hits the store on March 16th you want to start reading it right away, I promise you! In the meantime, you can start getting to know Brooke's writing by reading her first two books in the Heart's compass series; Where I found you and Lost before You!

Torn. It’s an excellent name for the book because my heart has been torn out of my chest. So many emotions, so many tears.

Ryan is the feisty and sassy yet sweet girl next door. She’s very honest and doesn’t mind saying what’s on her mind. She is someone I could see being friends with. I love her love for art. She draws on her arms but she only draws what has meanings and feelings to her. I hope her arm art turns into tattoos.

Maverick is the kind of boy you want your daughter to date. He is the strong and silent type. He has gone through a rough time and is dealing with things no teenager should have to go through. I think that makes him act mature for his 18 years. I cannot wait to see how great of a man he turns out to be.

Ryan and Maverick have crushed on each other since they met, but they seemed to stay away from each other in respect for Ryan’s twin brother Dean, who also happens to be Mavs best friend. I’m not a fan of Dean. I understand trying to take care of his sister, but you can’t undo hurtful words to your best friend. My heart hurt for Mav in the worst kind of way.

I love all of Brooke’s books. I was hooked from the moment I saw a teaser for Where I Found You. I knew her writing would be awesome and I haven’t been disappointed yet. I doubt I ever will be.

I love this genre. Ryan is off limits to Maverick cause of Ryan's brother, they are bffs, but the chemistry is to hard to ignore plus Ryan helps Maverick to forget how he's home life is , but he can't stick around he has to do what's right or at least what he thinks, so after one beautiful night with Ryan he leaves her with a note. Is there future for them, will he be back? Torn is bk.1 in the Torn and Tattered series.

"I wish I was strong enough to stay...."

Torn by Brooke O'Brien is Maverick and Ryan's story.
Ryan has always longed for her brother's best friend. With the lingering stares, and little touches, things start to heat up. But Maverick doesn't want to betray his best friends trust, with the horrors he has to deal with at home... he just want's one thing to go right. And if that means he can't be with Ryan so be it.

"My heart feels like it's been torn in two. In that moment, I make a promise to myself never to forget this feeling. I'll carry the tattered pieces of my heart with me..."

Ryan is the light in his life, always has been. For years he's held these feelings bottled up, until one night everything changes. Love is a bittersweet thing, and Mav shows Ryan what its like to be cherished.

At a party everything blows up in their faces.
Hearts are shattered, and trust is broken.

Which only leads to someone leaving town without a proper goodbye.

Torn was utterly mesmerizing. Brooke O'Brien has outdone herself with this beautiful, heartbreaking love story. Have tissues when you read Torn, the ending will leave you gutted.

Torn was a shorter read being a novella and all, but I was shocked to find how invested I found myself with Ryan & Maverick with the length. Ryan is Dean's twin brother, who is best friends with Maverick, so that alone means that Maverick should stay away from Ryan. However, he's waited until she turned 18 before the lines really got blurry between friendship & the girl. And that's all I need to say about the plot. Ryan is a feisty girl who has a thing for Maverick, but thought he would never look at her, especially since he & her brother have chased all the boys away from her. So right there, I'm totally in her corner. Maverick's life took a turn for the worse when he was 15, and Ryan has always calmed him, so on her 18th birthday, he had to finally couldn't stop himself from touching her. This is where the sparks lit the sheets up during sexy times. However, in this kind of story, the brother always finds out, so that kept me on the edge of my seat waiting. Then, I was left hanging by the talented Brooke O'Brien, which had me calling her some very colorful metaphors! Needless to say, I CANNOT WAIT to get the next book in this Duet, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

I was so excited when I got to pick up Torn as I loved both of Brooke O'Brien's books from the Heart's Compass series, so the fact that I was able to read more of her work just made it all the better. Brooke has such a unique writing style and with each word that you read of hers you can't help but want to carry on reading. Yet again, she has exceeded expectations and I honestly can't wait to see what else she comes up with. Seriously though, if you haven't picked up any of Brooke's work then you should go ahead and rectify that as you're missing out.

Ryan is meant to be off-limits for every boy that there is around, yet it doesn't stop the guys from thinking of her, especially Maverick as he's meant to be her twin brother's (Dean) best friend. Yet there is something about her that makes him can't keep away, yet he does his hardest to try.
Maverick has been Ryan's crush for as long as she can remember, but no matter what she does all that he sees her for is his best friends twin sister. She'd do anything she can to change that, but on the night before of her eighteenth birthday things change in ways that no one ever expected them too.

This review is going to be short and sweet since this is book one of the Tattered Heart Duet.

I loved Ryan. She was this fiery little thing with a smart mouth but she could be sweet. Especially when it came to Maverick. I love how she had the lady balls to force Maverick to face his feelings for her.

I loved Maverick too. Don’t we all love the damaged ones? The ones that make us want to soothe their bruised soul with a little TLC?

I was excited when he decided to be with Ryan. And then he had to go and do it. Had to pull the asshole move. All I can say is he’s lucky Ryan loves him. Don’t get me wrong. I understood it. He came from a bad home but dammit. Why couldn’t he have fought for them?

This story was a strong five star for me and I can’t wait to read the conclusion of their story and give a more in depth review then.

Torn by Brooke O’Brien is the first novella in the A Tattered Hearts Duet. I often have a harder time appreciating novellas because they are simply too short for me. That said, I loved Torn; it exceeded every expectation I had and then some… I am newer to Brooke and really excited to pick up more of her books. Torn is Ryan and Maverick’s story and I can’t tell you how awesome it was. The angst was ooohhhh soooooo delicious. Something about Mav really made the temperature’s increase in my vicinity. (😉) Ryan is meant to be off limits as the twin sister to his best friend. However, there is something that draws Maverick to her like a moth to a flame. Regardless of bro code, Mav can’t stay away any longer after Ryan’s 18TH birthday. The chemistry between Ryan and Mav had me completely spellbound and I couldn’t have put this book down if I tried. As soon as I am finished leaving this review I will be diving in to book two, and while I may have been slightly hesitant initially to read a novella, I am now incredibly motivated. Brooke O’Brien produced more in this novella than many authors can produce in an entire book. That takes tremendous skill on behalf of the author. With Tattered, book two of the A Tattered Hearts Duet, releasing in just 2 weeks, I would tell you to snatch up Torn immediately.

Wow. What a beautiful story. I can’t wait to get into the next one!

Torn tells the story of Maverick and Ryan. Well, the beginning of their story anyway, and all I can say is, I want more!
Maverick is this sweet, kindhearted boy with a not so nice household environment.
Ryan is his best friend’s sister. Dean is a typical brother - overprotective. Any guy who so much as raises an eye at Ryan gets warned off.

I’m already a fan of Miss O’Brien, and this is definitely another one to add to the faves. I’ll be jumping straight into the next one! I need more Maverick!

This is a brilliant quick read book by Brooke O'Brian. It is also book one with book two being Tattered. Which I am currently reading. I am so glad I got them together as I didn't want to wait to find out what happens between Mav and Ryan.

Even though it is a quick read the book is full of emotion. The feelings that come from the book as you read pulls at your heart.

We all have that one person we crush over when we are young. The person who is out of bounds for whatever reason. What happens though when that line is crossed. Will your heart ever be the same again. Can you go back to just being friends?

Bring on book 2.

Oh that ending though... I am so happy that I have the second book to dive into, because I would be heartbroken if I couldn’t find out how it ends! This is a short story about a hidden love, living on borrowed time, loneliness and feeling like it’s you against the world. I think I devoured the entire book in less than an hour!
Maverick is a broken shell of a man and hides the ugliest parts of his life from everyone. Until his best friends sister makes him want to tell her everything but as usual for his life, it changes nothing. After another fight at home, he has no choice but to say goodbye...
Ryan has wanted Mav since the day he became friends with her brother, but he has always been off limits. Suddenly both are pushing boundaries and letting their feelings show for the first time. Sometimes though it’s not enough.
This book is packed full of emotions and even though it is short, it definitely makes an impact! I’m on to the next one but recommend that you get started now!

Such an emotional and beautiful story of forbidden love and heartbreak. Ryan has had a crush on Maverick from the beginning but him being her twin brothers best friend complicated things. But now she is 18 and things have begun to change. But with Maverick's home life things may not turn out the way they want. I sat down and read this in one sitting because I really wanted to know how things turned out, but that ending......

This book was given to me at my request and I provided this review voluntarily

I LOVED Where I found you and Lost before you...so anything I can find about these characters I click..quickly! This is Maverick and Ryan's story. Ryan is the little sister..until she isn't. She is the one that Maverick can't get out of his head. He resists ..until he doesn't. Ryan and Maverick build the connection from best friend's little sister to true love. Theirs is young love and the author does a great job building the foundation of their connection. But Maverick's home life is troubled, and leads to some major angst in the storyline. I can't wait for the second part of the duet to continue their story.

I really enjoyed this novella! Torn is a well-written story that had all the good stuff to suck me in and make me fall for the characters, Maverick and Ryan. We get glimpses into their past, and we get to see their attraction build into something more. The chemistry between these two...sparks flew when they were near each other!

Ryan has had a crush on Maverick since they met years ago. She’s beautiful, caring... and she really wants Mav.

Maverick.. quiet, troubled, best friends with Ryan’s twin brother. He knows he shouldn’t cross the line, but he’s had his eye on Ryan for years.

This was a quick read that left me wanting more, needing more of Mav & Ryan. With an ending that squeezed my heart, I can’t wait to dive into the next book.

Oh my bring the tissues they'll be needed at the end, this is a cliffhanger. Loved it! A must read short series!
Brooke you made me cry in a short amount of time but I loved every minute. You did an excellent job telling the beginning of Maverick and Ryan's story. You write with your heart in the beginning of the Tattered Heart Duet. You give an epilogue into what we will be getting, so you prepared us but it wasn't enough to feel the heartache at the end for both characters. The heart and passion that the main characters (Maverick and Ryan) have explain a lot. I can say that Dean is not my favorite person in this story and he needs an ass kicking by his sister.

Torn is book one in a duet that has connections with Brooke's first books in the Hearts Compass. I really enjoyed going back to the beginning, back when the characters were teenagers, to see how they met and became friends. I am still waiting for Grahams full story so every piece of backstory I get is another puzzle piece placed.

Ryan and Maverick are typical teenagers from the outside but both struggle with the pains of  growing up. Maverick suffers in silence, keeping his homelife hidden from most. Ryan just wants to grow up and be noticed by her brother's best friend.

Those teenage years can be tough. Stuck between living your own life and still having to follow rules you haven't set out for yourself sometimes leads to hidden feelings and stolen glances.

Maverick notices his best friend's little sister but knows she has been warned off-limits. Warnings only go so far and when opportunity presents itself and Ryan seems all in, Maverick takes a chance. Just when things are looking brighter, Maverick's tumultuous home life comes crashing down and he has a choice to make. A choice that will leave both himself and Ryan torn.

My adult mind has trouble dealing with the teenage mind and its choices, the way it thinks. My adult mind sees the many other choices Maverick could have made and has trouble forgiving him.  I felt his love for Ryan, however short-lived it was, and I have hope that book 2 will heal my torn and tattered heart.

This story is an emotional ride. While this book could be classed as a YA story, it leads into the NA but does it ever pack a punch. I honestly devoured this one so fast! You can feel that connection between Ryan and Maverick right from the start. They have this kindred spirit with each other. An amazing push and pull. Even though Ryan’s brother did not want it to happen, he couldn’t control how much these two felt for each other. My heart broke and literally was torn seeing the pain that Ryan went through when Maverick walked away. I felt that this story was very much realistic as kids having to grow up in a hurry and their emotions are raw and open. What will come next?

"I just wanted to help heal him, but in the end, he broke me."

At some point in life, some of us experience that pull where two people are destined to be together but something stops it from happening, be it fear or simply caring too much for that other person, leaving you both not knowing what the future holds and your heart completely torn. Brooke has created a beautiful novella full of all the feels when it comes to Maverick and Ryan and I felt every single one.

I adored this book and can't wait for the next one.

Well done, you little beauty! x

There’s nothing like the feeling of a first love! Everything so new so wonderful, but what happens if the man you love is your brothers best friend? What do you do when the only person you’ve ever wanted is someone you can’t touch?

Ryan and Maverick felt the sparks from their first meeting but the cards were stacked against them! When Maverick needs to make a quick decision he runs to the first person he knows will bring him comfort; Ryan!

I loved meeting Maverick and Ryan and cant wait to conclude their story in Tattered!
