Such mysterious echoes existed in nature, Lalla knew: the sun and clouds, water and trees, could speak to an aching heart, like loving traps that spring into action on cue. She knew this, and there were beautiful ways to express such things in writing, it was only a matter of finding the words, which wasn't easy—indeed, it was trying and difficult, but the words existed.
The summer was nearly over when they were all reunited, but of course no one thanked her; all they did was grumble and complain. Wasn't she a mother, after all? Mothers have to grin and bear it. They should have thought twice before bringing children into the world, too bad for them.
