Innerscape #2

The Godsend

Rate this book
Desperate to find a version of reality she can live with, Miira Tahn sets out to explore Innerscape, but along the way she discovers there are other worlds open to her as well. The HUBs connect Innerscape to every location in the virtual universe, and some, like the gaming world of the Shogunate, prove to be a lot of fun.
Back in Innerscape, however, a darker game is unfolding. Someone wants the Burned Man silenced, but only the AI knows which body is where, and it's immune to threats. People, however, are so much easier to manipulate.
Caught in a web of intrigue and deceit, Miira and her friends become pawns in a game where losing means death.
‘The Godsend’ is the second book of the Innerscape cycle and corresponds to Episodes 2 and 3 of the original series.

Please call me Meeks! And welcome to my new, abbreviated bio!

I'm female, 60, Australian and a sci-fi writer. I have one daughter and far too many pets.

When I'm not reading or writing sci-fi, I play video games and MMOs. The name Meeks comes from the first MMO I ever played - Final Fantasy XI. I like to think I'm not... conventional. :)

AC Flory's Godsend, Book 2 in the Innerscape cycle, picks up after Miira Tahn's new life begins in the Innerscape world. Innerscape is a virtual reality world where super rich terminally-ill or fatally-damaged super-rich people live out their lives in a fantasy world of their choosing, where their broken bodies fall away and they live as whatever avatar they would like to be until their illness ends their existence and death finally takes them. At that point, they evaporate from the virtual world, deleted as you might erase a character in a movie. Think The Matrix for a select set of people but unlike Matrix, they know their lives are fabrications. They just don't care because it is so much better than reality.

The story follows Miira Tahn, a fifty-four-year-old woman who's body is so ravaged by illness she lives every day in pain. In Book 1 of the cycle (Miira), we see Miira Tahn enter Innerscape's virtual world, gladly paying its exorbitant fee for peace and happiness in her final days. In this second book, she ends up crossing paths with real-world criminals who are chasing another Innerscape resident, one called Burning Man. He is a whistleblower who was badly burned after exposing one man’s crimes again hundreds of people. Now, his enemies want him killed before he finds a way to tell more of their secrets. He lives at Innerscape, the only place where his horrendously burned body does not leave him in horrible pain. His enemies use a mother's love for her son, the emotional attachment of a disgraced genius for Miira Tahn, and finally Tahn herself in their effort to track down Burning Man. By the end of this second book, you will have no choice but to read the conclusion.

I couldn’t wait to get into the second book of the Innerscape Series and check in on Miira, Kenneth, and the rest of the characters. AC Flory captured my imagination and heart with the first book, Miira, and she didn’t disappoint with the second. As good as the Book One was, it was also a set-up for The Godsend where the relationships deepen and challenges escalate.

Miira develops a true friendship with teenage Jaime and enters the virtual gaming world, a new experience for her. Kenneth struggles with the fallout of his actions from the end of Book One. And Marissa enters the story, an assassin with her future on the line, a future she’s willing to kill for without hesitation. Their stories start to overlap, the action and danger take off, and it’s a nail-biter by the end. Book Three promises to be quite a ride.

As in the first book, Flory’s world-building is captivating. Her knowledge of virtual reality, of the gaming world, and of Japan (where Jaime’s game takes place) is stunning. I was completely taken in and convinced of the authenticity of the places and experiences in the book.

That authenticity extends to the characters. Miira was always an engaging character with a strong personality and softer vulnerability. She grows in this book, pulled out of her shell by Jaime, who also blooms and drew me in. All of the characters are beautifully three dimensional, with a full range of emotions and honest motivations. Though set against some amazing world-building, this is primarily a human story and I was/am invested in their lives.

I’m eager to pick up the third book and continue the Innerscape journey. I highly recommend this book to sci-fi and fantasy readers, gamers, anyone who’s fascinated by the virtual world and anyone who loves great world-building and rich characters. Happy Reading.

Flory grabbed me from the start in this tightly plotted virtual world and didn't let go until the very last page. The characters are dimensional and the world of Innerscape fascinating. I know little about virtual reality and gaming, but with the author's fluid and clear description, I was never lost. The idea of living on in a virtual world after our bodies have failed us makes for completely absorbing fiction. I look forward to reading book 3 and reentering Miira and Jaime's lives!

In book 2 to this highly entertaining series starts with Miira back at her beloved home, beautifully replicated in Innerscape. Here, Miira should have everything she wants as her late pets are there to share her old home with her as well as a gardener and a housekeeper. Miira now has a life of ease and luxury where she doesn't need to do any of the less appealing things in life like cooking or cleaning. She is able to garden and enjoy herself to her heart's content in the beautiful garden. Sadly, Miira is not able to adapt to the less believable / realistic aspects of her new life and so she decides to go on an adventure. She plans to visit all sorts of amazing places she always wanted to see but never did.

Miira goes to Japan where she meets up with her Innerscape guide, Jaimie Watson. Jaimie is the son of the nurse who eased Miira's passage into Innerscape. He is the youngest resident following a terrible accident when he was a youngster. His mother saved his life by persuading her bosses to allow Jaimie to become a resident of Innerscape. Jaimie, now 18 years old, is finding it difficult to fit into the artificial world of Innerscape as there are no other young people and he is engaged in 'coming of age' and learning who he is. Jaimie finds solace in entering the gaming world outside of Innerscape where he can engage with other young people. Unfortunately, this learning process has left him hurt when his relationship with another youngster ended. Jaimie needs a friend and Miira, a very different person from the other residents due to her unbringing and early life, is a good choice.

Jaimie and Miira become friends and Jaimie teaches Miira about the world of gaming. In the outside world, Dr Kenneth has been sacked and is not dealing with his unemployed situation well. There is also an unidentified person who is looking for 'the Burned Man' who is also a recent resident in Innerscape. This person is determined to find and kill the Burned Man. It is not easy to find a resident in Innerscape that only the AI knows how to find. Even the identity of the Burned Man is unknow to everyone except the top leadership of Innerscape. The potential murderer hires a professional killer/hit person to find and kill the Burned Man. Jaimie, whose mother has access to a lot of information at Innerscape, becomes a target of the hit person and Miira, as his friend, also becomes embroiled in the devious plan.

I enjoyed how Miira's character developed and observing her attempts to adapt to, and make the best of, her new life in Innerscape. I admired this about Miira. It is not easy to make the best of situations that turn out to be different from your expectations and I liked Miira's determination and positive attitude. Miira is a character whom I see as a very positive role model for women.

Jaimie's growth arc was also fascinating to follow in this second book in the series. Miira has a positive influence on Jaimie and he starts to reconcile some of his issues with his mother and his life as a whole. I am looking forward to seeing how Jaimie's character develops further in the third and last book in the series.

I think this is a very inspired and unusual series of books. The world of Innerscape is highly imaginative and yet relatable in our modern world of AI. Although I don't read a lot of science fiction, this series is character driven and the story is very engaging and entertaining.

I highly recommend this book and this series.

Sights, Virtual Adventures, Action...

WOW the action certainly ramps up in this second book of the series. Miira and Jamie are trapped outside Innerscape and in mortal danger, there’s an assassin determined to kill The Burned Man, the falsely accused Kenneth Wu reappears, and much, much more.
Excuse me, Book 3 is calling my name - loudly...
