Jan Oscar Sverre Lucien Henri Guillou (born 17 January 1944) is a Swedish author and journalist. Among his books are a series of spy fiction novels about a spy named Carl Hamilton, and a trilogy of historical fiction novels about a Knight Templar, Arn Magnusson. He is the owner of one of the largest publishing companies in Sweden, Piratförlaget, together with Liza Marklund and his common-law wife, publisher Ann-Marie Skarp.

Guillou's fame in Sweden was established during his time as an investigative journalist. In 1973, he and co-reporter Peter Bratt exposed a secret intelligence organization in Sweden, Informationsbyrån (IB). He is still active within journalism as a column writer for the Swedish evening tabloid Aftonbladet.

In October 2009, it was revealed that Guillou had been recruited by the KGB in 1967. The exposure of his activities came after the tabloid Expressen requested the release of documents from the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) and published information from the Säpo files along with information gained through interviews with former KGB Colonel Oleg Gordievsky about Guillou's case. The records showed that Guillou's involvement with the KGB continued for five years, until 1972.

Read this in one sitting. A thrilling little beginning to what could become something more, but sadly, Guillou didn't follow through with it. Next up, in the Hamilton series, is Madame Terror, though I plan on stopping by Evil first. We'll see what happens!
Anyhow, a thrilling read that I think would have been a great novel. As a start, it is solid and hooked me. I flew threw the pages on this one and if Guillou finished it, I think it would easily have been in my top 5 Hamilton books, together with Vendetta, Den Demokratiske Terroristen, Coq Rogue and I hennes Majestäts Tjänst.
But, I give this one 4 stars, with the potential it has!

Mer en krystad sammanfattning om hur Coq Rouge tillkom än en avslutning på Hamilton-serien. Visserligen trevligt med ”tänk-om”, men det gjordes mycket bättre i originalverken.

Det är såklart omöjligt att bedöma själva historien eftersom den är mer ett experiment på ett trettiotal sidor, där de första fem-sex sidorna är slutet från En medborgare höjd över varje misstanke. Berättelsen hinner knappt börja innan den abrupt tar slut.

Det intressanta är efterskriften där Guillou förklarar hur en fortsättning av Hamiltonböckerna är omöjlig. Anledningen är att han skriver för en svensk publik. Guillou ser inte vad han tillföra med en ny Hamiltonserie av typen ”Hamilton i Kalifornien”. Det grundläggande problemet är givetvis slutet i En medborgare höjd över varje misstanke:

Vi kan inte trolla bort hans livstidsdom i Sverige. Han kan inte sätta sin fot på svensk jord utan att åka in i fängelse på minst tjugo år. Regeringen kan, med tanke på hans tidigare bevisade brottslighet, inte benåda honom.

Idag vet vi att Hamiltonböckerna fick flera efterföljare. I år släpptes till och med den första delen i en ny serie, Den som dödade helvetets änglar, om Hamilton och Ponti som privatdetektiver. I Sverige. Det blir intressant att se hur Guillou knäckte den nöten.

It was great to finally get a hand of this book and read the only Hamilton book I hadn't read, but I liked the way it continued in Madam Terror much better

Fesen bog. Den er mega kort. Men det er meget rart at få rundet historien af.
