국내에서는 10번째 출간작으로, 일본 추리소설 시리즈가 이토록 꾸준히 사랑받아온 것은 매우 이례적이다. 1975년 문학지 「야성시대」에서 연재를 시작, 근 2년 만에 완성된 이 작품은 끔찍한 사건을 다루고 있지만 인간에 대한 연민과 진한 비감이 여운으로 남는 역작이다. 단행본으로 출간되자마자 이듬해 영화화되었으며, 이후 드라마로 제작되는 등 출간 당시 상당한 화제를 불러일으켰던 작품이기도 하다.

Yokomizo was born in the city of Kobe, Hyōgo (兵庫県 神戸市). He read detective stories as a boy and in 1921, while employed by the Daiichi Bank, published his first story in the popular magazine "Shin Seinen" (新青年[New Youth]). He graduated from Osaka Pharmaceutical College (currently part of Osaka University) with a degree in pharmacy, and initially intended to take over his family's drug store even though sceptical of the contemporary ahistorical attitude towards drugs. However, drawn by his interest in literature, and the encouragement of Edogawa Rampo (江戸川 乱歩), he went to Tokyo instead, where he was hired by the Hakubunkan publishing company in 1926. After serving as editor in chief of several magazines, he resigned in 1932 to devote himself full-time to writing.
Yokomizo was attracted to the literary genre of historical fiction, especially that of the historical detective novel. In July 1934, while resting in the mountains of Nagano to recuperate from tuberculosis, he completed his first novel "Onibi" (『鬼火』), which was published in 1935, although parts were immediately censored by the authorities. Undeterred, Yokomizo followed on his early success with a second novel Ningyo Sashichi torimonocho (1938–1939). However, during World War II, he faced difficulties in getting his works published due to the wartime conditions, and was in severe economic difficulties. The lack of Streptomycin and other antibiotics also meant that his tuberculosis could not be properly treated, and he joked with friends that it was a race to see whether he would die of disease or of starvation.
However, soon after the end of World War II, his works received wide recognition and he developed an enormous fan following. He published many works via Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine in serialized form, concentrating only on popular mystery novels, based on the orthodox western detective story format, starting with "Honjin Satsujin Jiken" (『本陣殺人事件』) and "Chōchō Satsujin Jinken" (『蝶々殺人事件』) (both in 1946). His works became the model for postwar Japanese mystery writing. He was also often called the "Japanese John Dickson Carr" after the writer whom he admired.
Yokomizo is most well known for creating the private detective character Kosuke Kindaichi (金田一 耕助). Many of his works have been made into movies.

Here I go, finishing The House of Hanging on Hospital Slope vol. 2.

Picking up what is left off in vol. 1, the story deals with the aftermath of the gruesome murder of a Jazz musician (who was beheaded for unknown reasons) which took place in the mansion on the Hospital Slop; decades had passed and everyone involved with the case has seemingly moved on by now, but then....the Jazz musician's 5 former bandmates are called up for a 'reunion' but of course, things aren't going according to plan and soon long-hidden secrets are being unearthed. Unknown threats, blackmail, and murder strike once again.
Honestly, I like vol. 1 of this novel better, by reading vol. 2 I can appreciate vol. 1 more than before. The explanation for the murder mystery is satisfying enough and I like the murderer's motive and their backstories, but some parts of the story are a bit overdramatic, I don't really like it.
PS: So Kindaichi ended up leaving Japan and disappeared in America after solving this last case, and was never seen again. At least we have some closure when our beloved detective got to the ending point of his career, and likely his life.
PSS: I'm sure there are people who are unhappy with the fact that , but I'm fine with it.

คดีฆาตกรรมสุดท้ายที่มีความยาวถึง 2 เล่ม และเป็นคดีที่ใช้เวลาคลี่คลายยาวนานของคินดะอิจิ
แต่ถึงจะบอกว่าเป็นคดีสุดท้ายเรื่องนี้ก็ไม่ใช่คดีที่ซับซ้อน หรือโหดร้ายหรือเรียกได้ว่าเป็นคดีเอกของคินดะอิจิ
อ่านจบก็รู้สึกโหวงๆเมื่อจะไม่ได้เจอกับคินดะอิจิอีกมากกว่าอารมณ์ร่วมจากเหตุการณ์นี้เสียอีก
เล่มปฐมบทเป็นการกล่าวถึงจุดเริ่มต้นของคดีฆาตกรรมและความโหดร้ายสยดสยองของคดีนี้ ในท้ายเล่ม คดีเหมือนจะคลี่คลายแต่ผู้อ่านก็รู้ว่ามันเป็นเพียงจุดเริ่มต้นเท่านั้นเอง
ต้องบอกว่าในเล่มปฐมบทเหตุกาณ์ช่างน่าสยองขวัญจนคาดหวังว่าเล่ม 2 ต้องมีอะไรที่น่าสะพรึงกว่า แต่ก็ไม่ได้เป็นเช่นนั้น
จุดเด่นของคดีตามแบบฉบับของคินดะอิจิคงไม่ใช่ในเรื่องความสยดสยองของเหตุการณ์แต่น่าจะเป็นความดำมืดและโศกนาฏกรรมในจิตใจของคนเสียมากกว่า

หมดวันหยุดพร้อมกับสองเล่มนี้(ต่อเนื่องกัน) 'คินดะอิจิ ตอน กระดิ่งลมหัวคน' สารภาพว่าอ่านปฐมบทมาหลายเดือนแล้ว มึนไทม์ไลน์ในเรื่องมาก อ่านไม่จบสักที... แต่ก็อ่านจบมาตั้งแต่เมื่อคืน...พอมาต่อปัจฉิมบทวางไม่ลงเลยจ้า
ปกติไม่เก็บหนังสือคินดะอิจินะ เพราะมีหลายเล่มเกิน.. ถ้าเริ่มเก็บนี่ต้องตามหาจากหนังสือมือสองอย่างเดียวล่ะ แต่ก็อ่านเล่มดังๆคดีหนุกๆอยู่ พอรู้ว่า #talent1 ตีพิมพ์ตอนสุดท้ายเลยคิดว่า เก็บไว้ดีกว่า
สำหรับตอนนี้ สมเป็นคดีที่เอามาปิดฉากจริงๆมีความซับซ้อน ความยาวนาน(ยี่สิบปี!) มีความโหด มีความสะเทือนใจ แต่ก็คิดว่าเรื่องคุณยายยาโยอินี่มันยังไม่สุด...

เป็นการไขปริศนาคดีที่ยังค้างอยู่เมื่อ 20 ปีที่แล้วให้ลุล่วงโดยสมบูรณ์ คินดะอิจิต้องเผชิญความน่าสลดหดหู่จนถึงที่สุด และยุติอาชีพนักสืบนี้ก่อนจะหนีจากทุกคนไปตลอดกาล เป็นนิยายเล่มสุดท้ายของนวนิยายขนาดยาวชุดนี้ ซึ่งเราว่ามีการดำเนินเรื่องที่แตกต่างออกไปจากเดิมค่อนข้างมาก เพราะบรรยายความรู้สึกนึกคิดและการพัฒนาการของตัวละครค่อนข้างมากกว่าเล่มอื่น ทำให้เราสัมผัสได้ถึงความมีตัวตน ความเหนื่อยหน่ายท้อแท้ สลดหดหู่ และแก่เฒ่าของตัวละครได้ มีความขัดแย้งกัน การปิดบัง การฝ่าฝืนกฏเดิม ๆ ที่เคยมีมา แต่เรื่องก็ไม่ได้ให้เหตุผลอันควรว่าทำไมคินดะอิจิถึงต้องเร้นกายจากทุกคนไปแบบนี้ และเรื่องนี้น่าจะต้องเป็นปริศนาที่ไม่มีวันคลี่คลายอีกต่อไปอย่างแน่นอน
จบชุดแล้ว ขอบอกว่าเป็นนวนิยายชุดที่น่าติดตามอ่านมาก ๆ ชอบมาก ๆ ตั้งแต่เล่มแรกจนเล่มสุดท้าย แม้จะสนุกมากน้อยต่างกันไป แต่หยิบขึ้นมาครั้งไหนก็ไม่เคยผิดหวังเลยจริง ๆ
