John Constantine (HELLBLAZER) guest-stars and helps Morpheus track a pouch of powerful sand that’s found its way into the possession of a drug addict. But what horrific metamorphosis has the sand caused the woman?
First item on the list, his pouch of sand, Dream goes to London where a man named John Constantine resides, the Furies told him that he was the last one to purchase the pouch. So it is that John first encounters Dream of the Endless, and the two work together to locate the pouch, finding it in the possession of one of John's former lovers. She is but a pale shadow of her former self, withered and dying, and her house is overrun with beasts of the Dreaming, but Dream takes the pouch from her, and puts her into a final, peaceful sleep.
In ... Dream a Little Dream of Me Morpheus tracks John Constantine and together they track Dream's missing pouch of sand back to John's junkie ex-girlfriend. A nice detail is the song lyrics added to the background of the comic grid, and if you have an overactive mind like mine, you can hear the music playing like a soundtrack.
He must be dreaming. . He can feel the warm tightness of her skin; the scent of sex is heavy in the air. . Her lips taste of roses and passion, and she holds him like her life depends on it. . This is so good! ---------------------------------------- The Sandman #3: ... Dream a Little Dream of Me
“…Dream a Little Dream of Me,” the third issue of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series, is when I really started to figure out just how very profound this comic was that my student had lent me. The stunning cover art by Dave McKean, the shifting narration, the kaleidoscope of images, the moral ambiguities of life playing out on the page, and the horrors of addiction depicted through Rachel’s experience with the dream sand all contributed to my understanding that this comic was so much more than just some over the top horror mag with goofy characters that the goth kids in my school were reading. It had a richness to it and a profundity that distinguished it from nearly every other comic I had read till then.
“…Dream a Little Dream of Me” is also the third episode of the new Netflix series and it brings me to a different sort of understanding, the realization that no matter how good this show is, it really cannot fully capture the depths and texture of the comic itself. In the show, John Constantine has been replaced here by Joanna, and while that’s unfortunate and he will be sorely missed, that’s not even what I am talking about.
No, it’s something far deeper than that, the way television fails to adequately explore the interior landscape of its characters, the way the horror and the perversion delineated in the comic can only be approximated on the screen. So much of that rich depth which I was drawn to in the comics on that first reading back in 1993 and which still holds up now thirty years later is sadly a bit diminished here in the show.
BOOK TOUGHTS / REVIEW DOWN BELOW! / WARNING IT CONTAINS SPOILERS OF THE BOOK ITSELF!
☽ ˚•̩̩͙ Star Rating 5 ⭐•̩̩͙˚*☾
☽ ˚•̩̩͙ THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS•̩̩͙˚*☾ Whole spoilers right here since its a 32-page issue - It is amazing how different it is from the show and yes, I had seen the show first. and currently in page 9 I am noticing Sandman coat or cape? in the back it has designs of faces of people and from what I know in the show that has not been shown or I had not even watched it closely even if I like watched the show for the fourth time already this month.
Quite surprised when they go into the apartment or flat and basically all the human flesh is around the place, unlike in the show they had to keep it in some sort of PG? Also, quite clever in the show they went to name Constantine Joanna it is a play word of John I could guess.
Disclaimer: I have made it a point to acquire this series second hand as to not directly financially support the writer and their reprehensible actions. While I think it’s important to keep the actions in mind while reading as a direct reflection of the writer and what story decisions are made, a lot of other people put hard work into this series that I believe deserve support as it still remains a pivotal piece in the DC universe, art, and comic spaces that I legitimately want to try and engage with. Thank you for your understanding.
That was also a fairly solid issue and a great appearance from Constantine as funny as it is that all of this takes place right in the middle of the fear machine arc where he was very occupied. I also love the running bit in this issue that every time Constantine listens to music it’s a specific song about dreams, lol. But this issue features Constantine as he is the last person who bought the bag of sand Morpheus is now searching for, one of his tools that will grow his power back as he gets them but as the start of this issue unfortunately shows…Constantine doesn’t have it either, and it seems that someone is rotting away as she is using the sand like a drug. But we can’t get there until Dream gets to Constantine and gets on the path there, and that’s starts a few days prior on a standard rainy day in London as Constantine’s breakfast is interrupted by a friend by the name of Mad Hettie who came to warn him that Morpheus the sandman, the thing Constantine believes to be a fairy tale, is back. He makes a note to look into it, after all Mad Hettie is 247 years old and knows a thing or two, but with how tied up he is in the fear machine it slipped his mind a bit until one day he was getting home and he found Morpheus towering in his door as he opened it, black cloak and all. Constantine holds his nerve and even cracks some jokes, but Morpheus keeps to the point about wanting his pouch of sand back. Constantine knows what he is talking about and he bought it a while ago in a garage sale in San Fran but he never managed to get the drawstrings open even if he could sense the power inside. More than likely it’s in a storage lock up owned by his friend Chas. Dream demands they go and retrieve it, but Constantine points out his current look, equipped at the bottom with what appears to be constantly shifting heads of people I would assume are dreaming, won’t fly well on public transport. So Morpheus changes his outfit to look a lot more like Constantine’s trench coat, just with his own blue flair to it. The pair make their way over to the storage locker but Dream does not sense the tools presence as constraint continues to look through the boxes…until one falls over and he picks up an older picture where he was with a girl…and Constantine realizes where the tool is. Chas picked them up in his taxi as they drove over to Rachel’s house. Rachel is a junkie and Constantine used to be in love with her and ran with her for a bit, but then he had a job in Alaska and by the time he came back she was gone and stole a bunch of his stuff and sold anything she could to buy more drugs. He didn’t realize until now that she took the pouch as well. Constantine’s plan is to go to Rachel’s father’s house to find where she has been staying, but the moment they get there Dream feels the pouch nearby and the danger that lurks inside the house. We actually got a glimpse of this danger earlier in the issue as a man broke into the house, only to suddenly find he was overcome with dreams and unable to break free or leave. Constantine orders Chas to lock the doors and stay in the car and to take off at the first sign of trouble as he goes in with Dream. Constantine immediately finds the front door locked and suggests the back way, but with the flick of Dream’s hand the door unlocks and opens. Even Dream suggests Constantine stay back, but Constantine is intrigued and is pushing forward, just his style. As they walk inside Constantine almost trips over the would be burgled from earlier, who Morpheus describes as being eaten by dreams. The area is dark so Morpheus emits a light to fill the room from his hands. As they continue together they head through a door, but as Constantine hits the light switch and as suddenly as he feels a strange wetness on his hands seeping down the walls…he is also transported to the sky as he finds himself falling from an airplane unsure of how he got there! Suddenly dream comes from behind and heaps him as he pulls him out of the dream and into reality. As Constantine reels from how real it felt, Dream realizes they need more light and now the entire room is visible as it’s revealed the walls are lined with living flesh…Rachel’s dad, somehow still alive and flayed across the walls…the power of the pouch. They continue into the next room to find green creatures telling them to leave and that the woman is theirs. They do not need any of Constantine’s threats, but Dream simply tells them to let them through and as they recognize their master they submit and apologize. Finally they reach the room containing Rachel’s bedroom, and she is awake enough to recognize John and tell him about the wonderful dreams she has been having. Rachel is not as human as she once was, the dust is the only thing keeping her alive as her body is basically skin and bones and whatever other sores and dead flesh peel off of her. Dream is ready to take the bag and leave without a second thought, but Constantine can’t stand it and demands they something to help her. Dream imagines she will die quite painfully soon and questions why they shouldn’t leave her, but Constantine’s pleas finally break through and Dream agrees to help as long as Constantine waits outside. As Constantine leaves, Dream puts a final plump of sand on her head. Sending her into a final peaceful dream where she is young and in love with Constantine walking into the sunset as Dream tucks her into bed for one final rest…Rachel is dead, peaceful and happy. As Dream meets back up with Constantine outside to tell him just that, Constantine asks where he will be going next…and of course the answer is literally hell, lol. But before Dream fades away forever Constantine has one more question…he doesn’t exactly know how to ask it especially as Dream doesn’t owe him anything, but Dream pushes him to ask an finally Constantine asks if there is anything Dream can do about the nightmares he has been having since Newcastle. Dream understands and agrees to help as he fades away and Constantine leaves to fight the fear machine. Legit what a sweet moment, Dream may be a lord of the endless who could easily look down on all of humanity…but then there are these moments where he is easily convinced to help Rachel, or willing to help alleviate Constantine’s torment and you know that there is a caring goodness behind the twinkling eyes.

Morpheus teams up with John Constantine to locate his pouch of sand, the first of three artifacts stolen by Roderick Burgess' mistress Ethel Cripps and second-in-command, Ruthven Sykes. After some searching, Constantine deduces that the pouch was taken from his person years ago by a drug-addicted former girlfriend of his named Rachel. They locate Rachel only to find her in a drug-addled state from her persistent use of Dream's sands as a replacement to narcotics. Though Morpheus is content with taking the pouch from Rachel and moving on, Constantine demands that Morpheus help alleviate her from her destitute state. Morpheus obliges, and this is the first major peak into his more human characteristics after only ever seeing him as an inscrutable esoteric being.
"There was a smell of Magic Somewhere, like the blue-sparks smell of Ozone at a Funfair"
The Sandman goes looking for (fan favorite) John Constantine, in order to get the first of his 3 tools back. Things happen and go wrong all at the same time, because, well John Constantine is like the walking embodiment of Murphy's law!
JUST watched some Mama Cass videos yesterday of this song! Now I'm rumaging through my hoard to make sure I don't (accidentally) have any sacks of magical sand- because I don't necessarily need a dark visitor.
another amazing issue! I haven't read any other DC comics so I'm obviously not familiar with John Constantine but I love how he is trouble everywhere he goes. I like the fact that they didn't gender bend Rachel in the show and I love that we're getting to know Morpheus better bit by bit <3
