‘A friend ship
is a rowing boat
You both row
Alternately’

I think this book can be exciting for children aged 5+
I would recommend this as a read aloud text to smaller children ages 6–8-year-old, older children could take a photocopy of one of the poems home and come back and talk about it.

The same inside book, is a book filled with a wide range of poems based around empathy and friendship which is great for children at any age but particularly primary school children. The poems are written in different forms and layed out in a number of different ways which can be interesting to show younger children who have not seen this before.

The poem friendship does not necessarily rhyme but instead it highlights lots of different compairsing of vessels on water - rowing boat, hovercraft, sunmarine, sailing boat. All stating that they are like a friendship, the poem has taken the word ship from friendship very literally of ships.
Repeating phrase of ‘a friendship is like’ at the start of each verse is very memorable as it is the main focus of the poem. As well as the harbour’s heart stating that the harbour is alive and a person as it has a heart that will beat and keep someone alive and the possessive apostrophe used for something that belongs to a person.
The poem has been laid out in verses each having 4 rows, with the first line being a friendship is like , then the second line talking about the vessel. The third and fourth lines are what the boat is doing and where it is going.

There are many different teaching opportunities with this book.
