This is the 4th in the Chase Dagger series. What if everything you knew about your past was wrong? What if who you thought you were was all a lie? In CHASING GHOSTS Dagger comes face-to-face with his past in the form of an intruder who first wants to hire him, then tries to kill him. What prompted this response? The answer lies in a series of numbers which triggers Dagger's memory and leads him to a remote city...one mile below the surface, technologically advanced yet abandoned. Or is it? The fourth book in the Chase Dagger series combines mystery with a dash of sci-fi.
This is the 4th book in the 'Chase Dagger Mysteries' series. I haven't read the previous three and the good news is that I didn't feel like I missing any back story. I liked the characters. The shape-shifter added interest and the fact she was Native American definitely worked for me. I also liked the the cutting edge technology with the sci-fi type gadgets. But none of this stood out. I didn't dislike it and I didn't love it. I just wasn't pulled in like I wanted to be. I'm not sure if that was because of the narrative in the story or the audio narration. But one of those things kept me at a distance. I wish I could define which one that was. I think it was too factual...and not enough depth. But I did like it ... so 3 stars.
Chase Dagger is a PI in Cedar Point, Indiana. His business partner is Sara Morningsky, a Native American shape-shifter. Dagger does not remember a lot about his childhood, but when someone shows up at his doorstep and he has to kill him and then a clone of this mystery man shows up in another locale, Dagger knows something if really off. Then, his paranoid friend, Skizzy, finds a microchip integrated into Dagger's brain stem. Who are these mysterious men, who blow themselves up when pressed? And how do they tie into Dagger's mysterious past? Dagger travels to the middle of Nebraska for answers and almost dies. This series is getting deeply weird, but always intriguing.
I had forgotten how much I enjoy reading about Chase Dagger and Sara Morningsky, Skizzy Borden and Simon. Their abilities. Maybe not Simon so much but he is a good friend. And now Chase has some of Sara's blood. I have 3 more Chase Dagger books - Nightfall, Vaporizer and Fatal Storm. Enjoy!
Lee Driver'sChase Dagger series is a must for us cross-genre junkies. She straddles the genres with a foot firmly planted in mystery, yet comfortable with the other entrenched in fantasy. Her novels always make a fantastic read and appeal to both groups. Her skill at plotting keeps the twists and turns coming, but not at the expense of characterization. I always clear time when I pick up her books, knowing once I start I won't stop until I reach the end.
Chasing Ghosts explores Dagger's past and the shadow company BettaTec that has been hinted at in previous novels. Also Chase realizes (about time) that he's in lust/love with Sara. A fun visit with the pair who finally sync their working relationship and a longer look at the secondary cast members. My favorite is Skizzy, the brilliant techno-nerd. who is hanging by his fingernails on the mental health floor. Although I wanted to smack him about half way through for continuously calling Sara "girly". Except for that quibble it was a romp of a ride. As always I'm left wanting more of Chase and Sara.

But Sara has her ways and knowing Dagger, he will risk everything, even his life, to destroy BettaTec. Sara is the only one who can keep BettaTec from destroying him. This is the fourth book in the Chase Dagger Series which combines mystery with urban fantasy.
I just got it and just finished it. I couldn't put it down. I did like it, but not as much as the others so far in this series, probably because this one leaned more towards being sci-fi with Chase's P.I./Secret Agent gadgets and gizmos and not as much toward the fantasy aspects of Sara's shapeshifting abilities which is what attracted me to this series to begin with. All in all, it was still definately a fun, adventurous read and I can't wait to find out what happens next in this series, especially where Chase and Sara's relationship goes.
I like the location, characters and plot of the book. My sister-in-law purchased the first four books of the series as a gift. Unfortunately, the fourth book does not solve the mystery and now I don't have the next book.
I love the Chase Dagger stories. I started with #1 and could not stop until I finished all of them. Great stories, characters, everything. A not to miss out on series!
I'm crazy for the Chase Dagger stories! The characters are so alive and dialogue flows. As impossible as they are, I believe in Lee Drivers work. WRITE FASTER!
