Ward Security #3

Deadly Dorian

Rate this book
Someone is trying to kill Marc Foster.

Attempted poisoning was bad enough, but when the would-be killer messes with the brakes on Marc’s precious Porsche, the art dealer admits he needs help. He just wasn’t expecting help to be quite so dark and sexy.

Royce Karras loves his job at Ward Security. He’s making up for a lifetime of bad decisions and a bloody past he’d rather forget. But Marc isn’t the spoiled rich boy he thought he’d be protecting. Sticking close to Marc as his “boyfriend” gives Royce insight into his toxic family, but it also reveals a brilliant, compassionate man who completely disarms Royce. Against his better judgment, Royce finds himself falling.

But can they find a way to make it work when Royce’s past threatens to tear their lives apart? Their futures hinges on a lost Renaissance painting, six Bichon Frises, and a pornographic Robin Hood.

No worries, right?

When I finished the previous book in the "Ward Security" series, I wanted Royce's book so bad. He has been an intriguing character to me since the beginning. I was so curious to find out who he really was and what exactly was haunting him.

Marc is in need of a bodyguard because it seems one of his siblings is trying to make him sleep with the fishes.....After 3 attempts on his life, it's time to call in the big guns.... Ward Security. Royce is assigned to be Marc's bodyguard, and in order to do so, he will have to act as his boyfriend. There isn't much need for acting though https://www.google.com/search?q=emoticons It doesn't take them long to set the sheets on fire !!

https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366

I think these two were definitely a perfect match. Marc needed someone like Royce in his life. Someone to take over and call the shots, so he could relax ;)

They are doing great, getting closer and closer every day and Royce even opens up about his past to Marc. But we all know things can't stay that way forever, something has to come and screw everything up !

This is where Royce lost some points with me. I hate how he played things.

https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366

Thankfully (for Royce) Marc doesn't hold a very mean grudge. I don't think he is capable of such a thing ;)

Except for Royce acting like an idjit, I did enjoy this story, but I have to agree with some of the reviews I saw already. One of the best parts of this book for me, was with Mrs Peacock... in the bedroom...with the revolver !! This really made me want to re-read the whole "Unbreakable Bonds" series. And I will https://www.google.com/search?q=emoticons

I can't wait to see, whose story these awesome ladies have in store for us next. Doesn't really matter though, because I will read them all !!

I highly recommend this series, and the " Unbreakable" series.

Reread June 2023: Audiobook = ***2.5 Stars***

Original review April 2018:

***4.5 Stars*** for my babyyyyyy!!!

- *ahem* - for my favorite in this series so far!

Did you hear that? That was a load - or rather a whole landslide - taken off my mind...

My eyes zoomed in on Royce as soon as he made his first appearance in this series and I was dying to get his story. Just ask my buddy read besties, they can confirm that I probably drove them bonkers with my gushing, swooning and whimpering everytime he showed up on page while reading the first two books in this series. But high expectations can be a b*tch sometimes and after the disappointment that was Dantès Unglued for me, saying I was anxious about this book is a bit of an understatement. So. Uncalled. For.

Where I didn't really feel the connection between Shane and Quinn in the previous book, here the chemistry between Royce and Marc was insane right from the beginning. Both men are as different as night and day with

Royce, the former bad boy with a painful past and guilt weighing heavily on him now working for Ward Security and being assigned as a bodyguard to

Marc , the poor rich boy (and I don't mean it derogatory), with a heart condition and someone upon his heels trying to kill him.

When both guys met there was enough UST to set a roof on fire and once they got down and dirty I wanted to park my backside under a fire hydrant.

And these guys actually talked!!! Aside from just hopping into bed - or onto other surfaces -, they got to know each other, so their relationship development was absolutely believable for me. That was definitely something I missed in the previous book.

Granted, the story itself needed a heavy dose of suspending disbelief, but did I care? Nope. At least not much. It was entertaining as hell, especially the second half was fast-paced insomuch that I almost neglected my buddy read partners and even if the ending was a bit rushed (- as much as I understand Royce's reaction and knew where he was coming from - as for me, Marc could have left him dangling a little bit longer!), I was a happy camper in the end.

This was also the first time I didn't have a clue who the bad guy was. Okay, maybe I'm just too gullible to see to which extent some people would go, so blame it on my simple-mindedness.

Other than that, I got the whole familiar package of humor (one word: code names - well, okay that's two. ;-)), emotions (Rowe actually made me tearing up here, so I had to scramble for some tissues which I didn't have in reach), action, hotness and bonding (the guys are not quite on the same level as those in the Unbreakable Bonds series, although they are slowly but surely getting there).

I do have one huge complaint towards the authors, though: no way in hell can you just fob us readers off with only a reference to something involving Lucas and Andrei I waited ages to get. I NEED DETAILS!

As much fun as this book was, reading it with my partners in crime Karen, Josy, Christelle and Anne who joined us for the first -but hopefully not the last- time, only redoubled the pleasure. Once again I had a blast reading this with you. Thank you! ❤️

Drake and Elliott continue to go from strength to strength with their books. This duo of writers is a force to be reckoned with in the m/m genre, particularly in the suspense and action categories.

We have all read stories where the bodyguard and protected fall for one another, Drake and Elliot have written one themselves but I promise you, this book is different.

Marc and Royce, two men with troubled pasts are Theon together when Marc fears someone in his family is trying to kill him! The duo are forced to act and boyfriends to explain Royce’s presence in Marc’s life. Seemingly opposite in every way. Marc the creative, self made art magnate and Royce the hardened by life bodyguard, are made for each other. After days of denying their attraction to each other they come together in a physical release of passion. When they each learn it could be something more, they begin to let heir guards down and their ‘acting’ soon becomes reality.

When everything comes to a head and Marc is injured, their relationship is thrown into jeopardy and Royce’s old fears resurface. It takes an old favourite, Rowe, to convince him he needs to allow himself the happiness he deserves.

This is an incredible book, an excellent addition to the series. This book is full of heart and soul. The characters are real and three dimensional and you can’t help but fall in love with Marc and Royce. Though I would say you could read it as a stand-alone, do yourself a favour and check out the other books by these ladies! Deadly Dorian is a must read!

Starting off really strong in this bodyguard themed spinoff, a fake boyfriend scenario turns a seemingly professional straightforward gig into a thick UST that can barely be cut.

This time around, affluent art dealer Marc Foster has had 3 near fatal accidents, and he doesn’t want to admit to himself that it might just be one of his siblings who wants him out of the picture. Thus, he employs the best of the best - Ward Security - and gets Royce attached to his hip for the foreseeable future.

Royce is a dedicated employee, and he does his job very well. He is a complete professional having sworn off from ever having feelings for another due to a horrible tragedy. Surely his no nonsense, gruff angry countenance will stave off any attachment - on his end or Marc’s. However, close proximity is nobody’s friend when trying to keep personal distance, and of course these two fall hard for each other, whether they want to or not.

The first part of this book was spot on for me, but then Royce’s past rears its ugly head and things quickly devolve into several entertaining, but disbelieving, plot points. What this series does well is the fun supportive group dynamic of all the employees under Rowe’s care. They’re all badass which makes for them taking care of business like, well…. nobody’s business. I like pragmatic decisive no holds barred when it applies to putting the smack down on the baddies. What I like less is D/s overtones that don’t titillate, sex at inconvenient times, and sacrificing one’s happiness for the good of the other. Ugh.

Overall, I enjoyed myself, but I wouldn’t say this is a favorite

Welp, I know I am, once again, in the minority here. I honestly struggled with this one. After waiting anxiously to read Royce’s story, I was really disappointed. I did, however, really like Marc and the way he was with Royce. They were very different, but meshed very well.

The secondary storyline involving Royce and his family was a little unbelievable to me, and I wish they authors would have stuck with just one storyline because it just didn’t flow for me.

Of course, this is just my cranky opinion and I know all of my friends loved this one, so again, this is on me. Please read other reviews to get a better idea.

So Royce & Marc came this >< close to taking top spot on my most favourites list of Rinda & Jocelynn couples up until Rowe's Mrs Peacock moment.

Then he firmly secured his and Noah's existing place as reining champions in two series' of books which just tick pretty much every one of my boxes.

The last 25% of this book is the sort of adrenaline rush you usually get from a big screen thriller and the plot races along, paying a lesser lip service to its classical literature influence than the previous two Ward Security stories have, but still calling to mind Oscar Wilde's story of hedonistic behaviour and double crossing.

Oh, and this one is hot. Like C4 explosive hot, like screw me over a Tuscan balcony hot, like I can't keep my hands off you hot. These two bring a whole new definition to sexual tension, it oozes off them whenever they're in the same space and I just absorbed it all in like the best aphrodisiac.

I'm not going to go into too much plot detail but suffice it to say, your heart will be in your throat at the audacious behaviour these two get up to and you'll be gasping in surprise and praying as hard as you can as forces array against them.

But be assured, family is at the heart of this story, as with all the romances in these two interlinked stories, and you will cheer and whoop for joy when the big guns come to play :)

Oh, and at 5% you'll be screaming at Rinda & Jocelynn "Oh no, you didn't do that" just as loud as I did while also squealing with delight.

#ARC kindly provided by the authors in return for an honest and unbiased review.

The gushing and Fangirling is all my own work and I'm not a bit ashamed about it :D

3.5 “let’s hear it for Lucas and Andrei’s little swimmers” stars.

What was my favorite moment in the story? Learning that Andrei and Lucas want each other’s sperm.

No, I’m not a deranged pervert (“Sure,” they whisper). No, I haven’t lost my mind (although a few more years in Trump’s America will do it so please save us, Robert Mueller/Stormy Daniels/2018 elections). Since you won’t understand what I’m referring to without reading the story, you should read it. But Lucas and Andrei’s brief appearance was a highlight, and I’m desperately hoping that the authors’ secret project involves them.

Many of my Goodreads friends know that I love the Unbreakable Bonds series (ask Lyn how I annoyed, oops, encouraged her to read it). They also know that I haven’t enjoyed the spin-off as much. Deadly Dorian broke the streak.

I give credit to the authors for doing something different. The book was, literally and figuratively, all over the map. It integrates a suspense arc regarding Royce’s family into the mystery of Marc’s attempted murder, yielding a twisty and thrilling globe-trotting adventure. While the ending was somewhat rushed, and suspension of disbelief was greatly required, the story was fresh and entertaining.

Royce and Marc seem as different as night and day. Yet both men have past traumas and have doubted their self-worth, which made their healing one another more rewarding. Unlike many other readers, I didn’t mind Royce’s behavior at the end too much. I sympathized with him. I was slower to warm to Marc, and while his connection to the original group was a tad too incestuous for me, I ultimately appreciated how his generous heart soothed Royce’s. And their physical chemistry was on-point! They shared some smoking hot moments. Except the olive oil, which I prefer to use only for smoking and marinating and grilling.

Since Rowe and Noah are my most loved couple after Andrei and Lucas, I delighted in their appearances here. Their book is my favorite in the Unbreakable Bonds series, but it was angst.com and Rowe put Noah through the ringer and Mel was (understandably) an overwhelming presence in their relationship. More reassurances about Rowe's feelings for Noah are always welcome!

I'm wondering who is next.

Garrett hasn’t been very well-developed. But I would love to read his story and I would love to read it soon because 1) diversity is desperately needed in the m/m genre and 2) take a look at the authors’ inspiration:

Large gingers give me Jamie Fraser vibes, and if we can somehow get Dom into a kilt, I’m there. Unless, well, my buddy readers know why I’m scared.

As far as Angelo, Shania said it best:

I was NOT a fan. At all. So I’m screwed if those are the final pairings 🤣

Regardless, Deadly Dorian was a sizzling, fun, and thoroughly enjoyable story. The greatest pleasure of all, though, was buddy reading with the fabulous Christelle, Josy, Simone, and Karen!

Another entertaining addition to the “Ward security” series.

What’s the trope ?
Well, one that so easily makes the trick for me, ie a bodyguard falling for his client in danger for his life. Beware though : the plot, or more precisely, the 2 plots are beyond far-fetched. But it’s so obvious from the start that I appreciated the fast pace and the amusement of this non-sense.

Is it a standalone ?
Yes and no. I think what I enjoy the most in this series and especially in this instalment is the appearance of the MCs from the “Unbreakable bounds” series and of this spin-off, the banter and the friendship they all share. Without this background, how to understand this **WTF : how can you do that to your fans, authors** moment at 5% and the hilarious use of codenames. Ahhh… “Mrs Peacock” !!!

Is it steamy ?
Oh yeah, no disappointment. You have Royce, the brooding hot Greek, scarred from his past, but who can’t keep his distance from Marc, the sexy billionaire, so sweet and caring under his veneer of assurance. Oozing chemistry, hot outdoor sex,…do I need to say more ? Yes : I would have preferred the authors not to make Royce a complete jerk in the last part for drama’s sake and without enough time for a good grovelling. That was unnecessary, imo.

All in all, an easy, entertaining and hot read that I had the pleasure to BR with my partners in crime : Karen, Simone (over the moon with her baby, her enthusiasm being contagious), Josy and Anne.

For the first 40% I wanted to give this 4 stars. Then I got a little bored and thought 3.5 stars. But then the last 10% happened and it I ended up with 3 stars.

Royce is a man who doesn’t talk a lot. He is silent, broody, dresses in black. A regular bad boy. But when Royce meets his next assignment he immediately reacts to the beautiful man who needs his protection.

Marc is a 28 year old millionaire. He couldn’t believe it at first, but it looks like one of his siblings is trying to kill him. And that’s how he ends up at Ward Security, getting himself a bodyguard. But no one can know he has a bodyguard, so Royce will pose as his boyfriend.

The two immediately start their fake relationship, but they have so much chemistry together that there’s not much fake about it. But while Marc is willing to see where their attraction will take them, Royce is more hesitant.

Royce lost someone in his past and now he is hesitant to give his heart to someone again. Especially someone who has a heart condition, just like his fiancé who died.

While the two are trying to figure out who is trying to kill Marc, someone from Royce’s past comes back and tries to blackmail Royce, and Marc has no other choice than to involve Marc…

I wasn’t too sure about Marc at first. He seemed a bit too aloof for me to like him. But when I got to know him better he was actually quite sweet. And so ready for Royce to take charge.

I didn’t really like Royce in the previous books, but he was a pretty likable character in this book. Right up until we got to my least favorite part in the entire book.

I hate it when there’s drama in the last 10%. Why do authors do this? We’ve had a whole book to get the couple together, I do not need for them to break up and only get together again on the final page.

So this is not a bad book, I just got so incredibly annoyed with Royce that I wanted to throw this book out the window.

I still like the series, even though the previous book and this one were not what I’d hoped they’d be. There is still a lot of potential. So I’ll gladly read the next books.

4 this series is so good stars.

"The food is nice, Marc. But you…you make me hungry.” He rubbed his thumb over Marc’s bottom lip. “Especially your mouth.”
“Then taste it,” he whispered."

Damn! This series is just a big fucking

This and the Unbreakable Bond Series just have my heart.

I always was curious about Royce, he was always this mysterious man that you knew was hiding somethings about his past, so when I discovered that this book would be about him, I was really excited to read it.

I can't say much because if I do it will take the fun out of it. But the one thing that I can say was that the secret was not what I was expecting.

Just like the previous books in this series, some characters from the Unbreakable Bond series appeared and we discovered new things and well, let's just say that one of the reasons to why I wanted to read this series was so I could read more about them, because they are just that good, and all of them have my heart.

okay, so this book was hot, like fuck me outdoors in Italy kinda hot.

"He’s not worth it?”
"His lip curled. “He’s worth everything"

I absolutely love this couple. The relationship took time to happen (slow-burn) and it had a lot of development.
I love couples that are passionate and love each other so much that they just feel like the world became a brighter and better place.

And just like the UB series, this one had friendships goal too. Is great to read about friends that are supportive and are willing to do everything for you, even if that means putting their lives at risks.

I can't recommend this and the UB series enough.
They will ask for your soul and you will give it to them with a smile on your face.
Maybe I can be a bit biased about this, mostly because these two series have become my life these past months, but I assure you, you will not regret if you pick it up and read it.

This story started out strong, showing great promise between broody bodyguard Royce and his latest client, artist and art curator—not to mention filthy rich—Marc Foster, who needs protection from Ward Security after surviving a few failed attempts on his life.

The chemistry between Royce and Marc was sizzling and the back-and-forth between them was compelling stuff, as Royce pretended to be Marc’s boyfriend so they could covertly navigate the whole “someone’s trying to kill me” situation Marc was precariously in.

The second half, unfortunately, took a bit of a silly turn for me and I don’t think the story ever truly recovered.

As a couple, or potential couple, I really liked Royce and Marc. However, some of the stuff that went on around them was a bit too OTT and unrealistic (even for me), particularly once Royce’s estranged crime-syndicate family came into the picture and started making weird demands and threats, which took me right out of the story because Royce’s responses/actions towards this were just all wrong, at least for my logical, sane brain.

And everyone knows how much I loathe a martyr in my romances, so the “separation” BS at the end, before the big HEA could be won, just served to annoy me further.

So, in summation: Enjoyable first half, frustrating second half.

This may not have been anywhere near my favourite of this series, but I do love the wider cast of characters and still buzz anytime the original Unbreakable Bonds gang get any page time. Here, Rowe took out the prize for best scenes, with some meaningful moments towards the end that made all my woes well and truly worth it.

Short review - WTH happened it’s Royce?

Slightly longer review - I was really looking forward to Royce’s book. And I do mean really. I didn’t even stop to check out any reviews I just dived straight in after finishing Dante.

And yes it started well. I mean it had Royce in the staring role so how could it possibly go wrong?

Don’t get me started. I mean seriously what happened?

So we have the sexy and tortured bad boy Royce. Marc the new client convinced a member of his own family is trying to kill him.

So far so good.

The bodyguard has to pass as a boyfriend since its family. Which means Royce and Marc will be getting very close. And I was set for a great read. Or so I thought.

Firstly there’s a lot of sex. Yes I’m aware I’m complaining about too much sex. But I need balance and I found myself repeatedly skimming and even skipping the sex scenes.

But it’s Royce so I continued on.

But then we get another story. Royce’s past rears it’s very ugly head. And yes on one hand I’m curious about his past. But I want Marc’s story. Their story. And this is not only distracting from that but completely taking over.

It just didn’t work for me and don’t get me started on the last 10% of the book. I hate it when authors do that.

I loved Unbreakable Bonds and Psycho Romeo was really good. But Dante was disappointing and now this. I had intended to read the whole series but I’ve quickly scanned the reviews for Sherlock. They’re a mixed bag again so I’m going to call it quits for now. It’s a shame because the guys are great it’s the story that always seems to let them down.

My fave of the series so far. I loved this book so hard. I loved Royce's tragic past and his insecurities. I loved Marc's drama with his family. I REALLY loved the UST between these two, and when it explodes.😰 So hot, sexy, rough, and sensual. Wowza!! I loved the bond all the guys in Ward Security have with each other. I can't wait for the next installment.

I know that, most likely, I'm going to be the odd one out here, but ....

Most of us are happy to look past plot holes and some unbelievable story lines if the romance in the book is strong enough., and I have often done exactly that. Here though, I'm sorry, I just can't.

Although I liked Royce and Marc, I felt that their story was just a variation on the theme of the series. Bodyguard, billionaire, etc. etc. etc.
As for their connection: for me it felt exaggerated - there was just too much insta-lust and 'desperate need', and all in all too much sex (dare I say it?). I started skimming some of the sex because it was a bit like, oh my, here they go again.... Maybe I am saying this not right, but to me, something about all of that felt off.

As for the plot - I may have given myself a minor concussion from shaking my head so violently at some of the stuff that's happening.
I was quite happy with the 'detective part' of the story, when it was abandoned in favour of a totally hair-brained scheme that only seemed to serve to introduce a new character for another book (Angelo). This part really bugged me because, actually, when you think of it, it is bat-shit crazy - sorry.

Eventually, once we got back to the original plot line, it was immediately obvious who the culprit trying to kill Marc was, and it was painful to see that not one of the amazing guys at Ward Security even thought of the possibility.

We also, oh shock and horror, find out that Lucas and Alexei got married off page! I severely hope that the surprise the authors are hinting at working on, will be a novella about it.

Right, rant over, I did enjoy some things here, too.

Royce is wonderfully brooding and Marc a sweetie all the way (why he loves his sibling is beyond me though!)
Meeting Lucas and Alexei, Rowe and Noah and all the other guys from previous books is always a pleasure.

Anyway, I still give this *3 stars* because I have a soft spot for all these guys, but it was a push and a shove.

I struggled with this one. Generally speaking, I've liked this series alright. But for whatever reason I just couldn't get in to this one.

I didn't feel much of a connection with either MC. And I don't know, the whole plot was just kind of meh to me. And far-fetched.

I started skimming around the 50-60% mark. And it was kind of cheesy at times.

You know what else, for the life of me I can't figure out how the title relates to the book. Maybe I skimmed over that part?!?

It's like catching up with old friends. Not only do we get a sexy new romance, we also get juicy tidbits from our previous favorite couples. I think this is what I adore most in this series (and side series), the fact that we were let in to a group of friends who might as well be close brothers. The loyalty among these men is the stuff of dreams.

Welcome to the fold Marc. I fell in love with him from the get-go. What an amazing man. Not only is he perfect for Royce, his heart is going to fit right in with this group.

Their story is steamy. Right from the beginning. There was a lot of sex in this story. Maybe I'm weird, but I'll admit to skimming some of the later, longer scenes. I was too anxious to get back to the other type of action in this plot. You know, the action involving clothes. ;-)

I enjoyed the crime mystery. I always do. Although in this installment there was almost too much of it. Competing arc lines vying for my attention. I very much enjoyed the first, main plot line. I thought the others detracted a bit from the angst of the first one and added a little cheese to a dish that didn't need it.

All in all, I enjoyed this one a lot. I love Marc. I'll read this series until there's no more to read. Then, I'll start all over again.

Loved it! After just skim-reading the previous book in the series (hard to read all the sex scenes that dominated the story), I was a bit skeptical about this one. But then I went to read the reviews of some of my friends, and I got a tad hopeful about starting it. And I’m so glad that I did.

I loved Royce, and I loved Marc (though it was hard to connect to his character in the very beginning). Theirs was a story full of fun, thrill, pain, suffering, and love (how can we forget that! ;-) ). Cannot wait to start the next book.
Love the works by this amazing duo of talented authors.

I don’t want to be repetitive but it bears repeating that I loved the Unbreakable Bonds Series. Like L-O-V-E-D it.

Loving the original does not guarantee the same for the spinoff. It may not be love but it is keeping me on my toes there is no doubt about it. So, I was not a fan of Psycho Romeo (Ward Security, #1) but gave Dantès Unglued (Ward Security, #2) 5★'s. See what I mean?

And now we have arrived at book three. This is a confusing book to review. The book didn’t get on my nerves in a distracting way and I really kind of liked it…But…I don’t think it knew what kind of book it was trying to be.

Let’s talk about this. So, this series has a formula. Bodyguard falling in love with his client. There is a setup of danger and of course a needed closeness that just can’t be ignored and then of course the big I just can't be with you drama. So, somewhere along the line I feel like this book almost forgot someone was trying to kill Marc. It almost felt like a Contemporary Romance (is that the right kind of book?) and not a Romantic Suspense which is what I expect them to be. I am not complaining mind you, hence the confusion, I am just stating that it kind of was in the back of my mind there should be some danger and not just a love story, yeah? And then, when we got some danger it was a whole new side story and not the danger I expected. Oh, and then because of the new danger we got a kind of heist/caper like side story, but still no danger to Marc which is why they were together to begin with.

I don’t want to say anything else really. There were a few more examples but I'll just quit here. I’d hate to give the book away. Let me just summarize real quick. There was a lot going on in this. I was entertained and I enjoyed it. I loved, loved, loved the surprise appearance by Colonel Mustard and Mrs. Peacock. Seriously, one of the best parts of the book. Overall I think this was a better installment to the series than book one but not as good/great as book two.

So, maybe 3.5★'s rounded up? I don't know. Yeah, I think that sounds about right. Regardless of my confusion and the feeling of being all over the place I think I really liked it...mostly. HAHA! Obviously I am still so confused!

Who is up next??

***3.5 Stars***

Short and sweet review.

I liked this book. I liked the ease of Marc and Royce's relationship. They easily clicked and I bought their connection. Did it get cheesy at times? Yeah. I could have done without so many "beauty" references.

I'm noticing the cheese factor in this spin-off is a bit higher than The Unbreakable Bonds (or maybe I just connected to those guys more and didn't notice, I'm not sure?).

Also, the suspense element was weird and underdeveloped. Both the whole art heist thing and the danger to Marc. Weak suspense seems to be a pattern in this series. But to be fair, I don't really pick up these books for the suspense element.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. I hate to compare, but I'm gonna anyway. This series is definitely not as strong as the original Unbreakable Bonds series. And frankly, I'm bummed.

This was my favorite book of the Ward Security series.
Sure, you need to suspend disbelief because really, some things happening here are rather far-fetched and too easily resolved. Also, some behavior of the men previously introduced, namely Rowe and his team, seemed to be out of character and too convenient - modified only for the story to work.

Still, the things I didn't like in the previous book Dantès Unglued - not feeling the connection between the MCs and too much sex ~gasps~ instead of talking to each other - were much better in this book. Yes, there was sex (and it was much more to my liking) but there were also conversations and time to get to know each other.

The attraction between the MCs was sudden - insta-lust comes to mind - and encouraged because of the pretend-boyfriend-trope but it wasn't insta-love IMO. Royce especially fought much too hard against his feelings for Marc to call it an easy and immediate HEA. In fact, he pissed me off towards the end, but fortunately, Marc called him out on his BS and made him understand that he's very well capable of making his own decisions, thank you very much. I did understand his hesitancy to open himself up again to another relationship and deep feelings because of his dark past but one scene, in particular, was cruel and unnecessary IMO.
Marc, too, battled some demons of his own - different from Royce's - but their shared painful past also gave them a connection and a better understanding of each other that, combined with their mutual attraction and compatibility in the bedroom, made for a believable HEA.

I was very surprised to learn about Lucas and Andrei's off-page and I really hope the authors will give us this story very soon!

Overall, this was a very enjoyable book and reading it with my amazing BR partners Karen, Christelle, Simone, and Anne made it all the better. Thank you, ladies, for some very entertaining hours!

4.5 stars!

Man, after the last book that wasn't up to these author's usual standard for me, this one got back to form, so to speak.

I loved it. I was wondering who it was going to be who would get pasts Royce's very thick walls, and Marc was the perfect man to do it.

Their chemistry leapt off the page for me, and their first kiss was DAMN, and then their first time! Whew *fansself*

Plus, there was only like a tiny bit of slowness near the beginning for me, but nothing that dragged, and it wasn't for very long. This picked up quickly for me.

Marc, after he almost dies after his break lines are cut, has to concede that one of his 3 siblings is probably trying to kill him. And this is after he was almost killed twice before. And Still Marc was reluctant to seek help, reluctant to ask for a bodyguard. Because this is his family, and as much as they can treat him badly, they're still his siblings, they wouldn't try to kill him, right?

But, they're the only ones with easy access to where he lives, so it is the only conclusion he can draw. With his sister living in his guest house after a nasty divorce and his two brothers both having keys to his house. He has a housekeeper but she's old and married and he doesn't think it could be her. So they turn their focus on the siblings.

And before Marc doesn't want his siblings to know that he's getting protection, his bodyguard has to act like his boyfriend so they won't get suspicious.

Enter in Royce, and of course not long after the "fake" part of their "fake boyfriend" routine doesn't last for long. But Royce is dealing with his own shit from his own past that he hasn't let go of, that he still has to deal with in this book. And Royce letting others in to help or talk to about his problems? Its like pulling teeth. It's only when the shit hits the fan that Royce actually realizes that he can trust his friends around him and get their help.

But with Marc...with Marc, its different. And Royce finds himself telling Marc things he's never told anyone before.

And Marc is only hesitant for a little bit because of his past - he likes being submissive in the bedroom, but for awhile a few years back he liked being hurt during sex (more like, he was in pain and let others hurt him because he thought he deserved it. Not a healthy approach to sex like that, because he didn't truly like it, it was just an outlet for him.) and Royce could definitely dominate him. But Royce isn't one to hurt his partner, and while he's somewhat rough or dominate with Marc, he never hurts Marc and always makes sure he's okay and taken care of.

Royce doesn't think he's a good man, but it's shit like that that shows that he is. And it's usually the good men who are always scared that they aren't. Actual bad men don't give a shit, and don't war with themselves over it.

It felt like, near the end when Royce was dealing with some shit from his past that dragged Marc into it, and they were still dealing with whichever sibling was trying to kill Marc, that it might have been a tad much. I ultimately didn't mind because both plot lines were intriguing and held my interest until the end, but Royce's thing became so big that it felt like Marc's whole, ya know, someone trying to kill him! was almost an afterthought.

Not quite, because it is still taken seriously by Royce and everyone, but more like the writing felt like it focused a lot of energy on Royce's thing. Because when Marc's thing comes to a head, it felt like it was a fast climax that was over fairly quickly. Like the thing happens, Royce freaks out over what happened on his side of things because of course he does, and pushes Marc away, too scared that he and his life will kill Marc one day but we only get a description, really, of when Royce leaves Marc.

And then apparently almost 2 months go by before Royce pulls his head out of his ass. There was a good scene in there before he fights to get Marc back, but I thought it would be like a few weeks at most, not almost two months. What was he doing in all that time? Even after he had a conversation with Rowe that helped him pull his head out of his ass? Idk.

But anyway, in the end it wasn't bad or anything like that, just maybe a tad rushed, the climax at least. But we get a very sold HFN at the end of this, and I loved these two together so overall I loved this book. DEFINITELY recommend! :D

Can't wait for the next one! I hope it's about Dominic because I've been waiting for his book.

EDIT: I forgot to mention how they had Lucas and Andrei marry off screen! I'm really annoyed about that, because I felt like we were waiting forever for their wedding! I hope we get some extra about their wedding or I'll be so mad because like really? Off page? UGH!

Deadly Dorian can pretty much be summed up as Will Royce allow his past destroy his future?

Told in a dual POV the third book in the Ward Security series features Royce, the bodyguard who is close to computer genius Quinn, but not many others, who has a grin that he rarely bestows, and has secrets and a temper from hell and doesn't talk about his past filled with heartache and loss.

Marc Foster hasn't had it easy either and he's finally coming to grips with the fact the "accidents" he's been experiencing are more likely attempted murder, so even though Marc has history with Rowe, Lucas and Snow he swallows his pride and approaches Ward Security for help meeting secretly with Lucas and his husband, Andrei Hadeon, the COO of Ward Security. Andrei comes up with a plan for security, including cameras in his house and Royce, who will be with Marc 24/7 posing as his boyfriend.

Royce, and Marc's attraction to him, is a reminder of a past Marc wanted to believe he'd left behind. While Marc, and Royce's attraction to him, is something Royce doesn't want to want. But the two can't deny the chemistry between them, no matter how hard they try.
Royce wasn’t sure which of them was going to break first, but he had little doubt that they weren’t going to last much longer before they either punched one another or fucked. At this point, he really didn’t care which happened.

But when Royce's past comes knocking, he needs not only Marc's help, but the help of his Ward Security brothers to save those closest to him. Including Marc, even if it means walking away.

90% of this story was great. But I'm not a fan of the whole - miscommunication plot so it hit a bit of a rough patch for me with the shenanigans, but got back on track eventually and gave me the HFN I was craving.

What can I say? I really like Drake and Elliot and the world they've built. They are consistently good, they write the tragic backstory hero oh-so-well, they give an engaging plot, some really hot sexy times, and chances to catch up with the characters from the Unbreakable Bonds series. What's not to like? Plus we got a whole scene featuring Clue! references and that just made me deliriously happy.

I enjoyed reading Deadly Dorian. Royce and Marc are great characters, I loved the suspense, I had fun reading it and I'm looking forward to more in the series. Fingers crossed for Dominic's story!

As a side note - I wish I knew what was going on with the titles to this series, because I cannot figure out how the play into the plot. Does anyone know what these titles mean?

Writers write to engage their audience, to elicit an action. And if done well, the earth moves for the reader. Deadly Dorian is the third book in the Ward Security series, a spinoff of Unbreakable Bonds. And indeed, the Earth shook.

We’ve met Royce, the brooding security guard, throughout both series. A man haunted by past actions and their consequences. He’s loyal and dependable, but keeps those around him at a distance out of fear and self preservation.

Marc is a self made man. A gallery owner, presenting a facade for public consumption while in private retreats to a self imposed exile to the art he creates for his own sake.

Jocelynn Drake and Rinda Elliott gleefully send us in a wild ride through the underbelly of the international art world. Yes, there’s angst. Yes, there’s scorching hot sex, (Be on the lookout for the description of a certain security guards behind as he walks naked out of the room. It’s one if the most erotic images I’ve ever read.) It’s evident these women love the people they write about. And the reader reaps the rewards.

These authors, these formidable women have ultimately given us a love story. Albeit, one that takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride, leaving us exhausted, sore, bleary, sweaty, and stupidly thrilled. Because the kind of love that they write about is the kind that you think you’ll never be worthy of. The kind that shatters your very being but ultimately rebuilds you into something you never knew you could be: beloved. And they do it incredibly well.

If you’ve made it this far into this universe then you know that the authors rely on a tried and true formula - as all writers do. And they certainly put it to good use. As romance dictates: there must be a happy ending. And we certainly get one. That’s not a spoiler. But the journey to that happy ever after is wild fun but not without a few emotional bruises. Don’t let that scare you away. The course of true, sweaty, beautiful love never did run smooth. But my, oh, my. When you finally get there… wow.

Oh, if you’ve read the first two books, Psycho Romeo and Dantès Unglued, respectively, then you know all about “The Door” and “The Office Chair”. Drake and Elliott now give us “The Black Silk Tie”.

I’ve said this with each and every book these women give us: read them. Read them all. Every word that they throw at us is worth your time.

5 stars because we need more stories about love conquering all.

4 stars!! 💕 Another action-packed thrill ride in the Ward Security world, this time it's Royce's turn to take advantage of the "Ward Dating Service" 😉😱 and fall for his client Marc Foster, a famous and rich art dealer. Marc, in need of a body-guard due to three close attempts on his life, calls on Rowe's infamous company and lands himself Royce, the resident grumpy bodyguard to come in and pose as his boyfriend while providing protection. Sparks fly immediately while they pretend to be in a relationship, and soon enough the fake passion turns into a real one and burns with a sizzling fervor 🔥💕🔥. But, danger in the form of Royce's dark past comes close to ruining their new found happiness and they find themselves in the middle of an art-heist-adventure. Of course that adventure is followed by more danger and action which involves the entire Ward team.... and I must say, it was fun to see such humor and camaraderie between all of them and I look forward to more such missions including the crazy code names😁😉. Obviously while we readers are distracted with Royce, the threat against Marc comes close to destroying everything Royce has done to safe-guard Marc.
Is Royce able to save Marc from this familial threat? Can their fledgling relationship survive after Royce almost self-destructs it? What kind of future can they hope to have with such a gap in their statuses? And what about the lost painting?

To summarize, it's a great plot with plenty thrill, suspense and steam to keep the reader engaged. Highly recommended to all fans of the UB and WS series👍👍

P.S. I do wish the painting in question was actually in one of our museums. Alas, this lost painting from WW2 is still MIA. 🙁

Royce was a mess

Another good adventure from this duo. Marc was an interesting character with his artistic eye and talents. Royce is the brooding Greek bodyguard who like many of the other men in the series, guards his heart and stays alone. He’s not even close to most of the security guys he works with. While guarding Marc and falling into bed and love, Royce’s past comes calling.

I really liked the adventure in Italy and I hope Angelo shows up again sometime. There’s a lot going on between Marc and Royce’s problems and it’s suspenseful and exciting. Then Royce gets all dramatic and dumb. Kind of typical for most of these guys but the backstories they get are different and often unusual.

I question the use of the term “shylock” for Royce’s past job. I’ve always thought of that as a pejorative term for someone Jewish and it really bothered me. I hope someone corrects me if I’m wrong. If not, it’s why the story lost a star and I hope the authors change that.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did the others. My biggest problem was the end. I think Marc forgave Royce to easily. After everything Royce put Marc thru, I think he should have had to earn back some trust form Marc. But most of the book I really like. So 4 Stars.

Rowe used to say that his security company is like dating service, which I thought pretty apt seeing that this time we have Royce ended up with his client, Marc. Royce was featured previously as Quinn's friend, but I didn't care much about him then. Apparently, he got quite a shady past, tangled with some mafia background. The client in need of protection is Marc, a prominent figure in the art world with an attempt on his life, which he suspected might be one of his siblings.

From my experience with this writing duo, I know is a book that I can basically 1-click without reading the blurb. Royce is the sexy bad boy with a dark past that we will root for, while Marc is a sexy, successful bachelor who is a total darling. Putting them together will guarantee some steam and sexy shenanigans. Add in some heavyweight supporting characters such as much beloved Rowe, Noah, Sven, Geoffrey, we have the whole packaged deal.

When Royce's past suddenly reappeared to cause some mayhem, I thought it took away the attention on Marc. But I find myself enjoying the part whereby Royce went on some action together with his buddies from Ward Security.

The romance had a decent build up with some emotional scene thrown in. Although I'm not actually fangirling over this couple, unlike Geoffrey and Sven, I thought Royce and Marc is solid. They are mature individuals and very upfront about them being together isn't faking it for the job. All is good, right? So what Royce ended up doing towards the end isn't cool. I know in the grand scheme of things, everything will work out fine, but is the added drama really necessary? I kind of expected something better from this series. Anyway, these are just minor quibbles. Overall, Deadly Dorian does deliver and then some. A shout out for the art thief, Angelo. The guy needs to have his own story soon.
