Twin sisters separated by the past are reunited by unspeakable crimes in New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton’s throat-clutching novel of suspense…
Trauma victims are not new to medical examiner Faith McIntyre, but this one is different. The unconscious woman clinging to life after a hit and run is FBI agent Macy Crow. What the woman from Quantico was doing in a dark alley after midnight is just one mystery. The other is more unsettling: Macy is Faith’s mirror image—the twin sister she never knew she had.
Faith knew that she was adopted, but now she’s finding that her childhood concealed other secrets. Following the trail of clues Macy left behind, Faith and Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden make a shocking discovery on an isolated country ranch—a burial ground for three women who disappeared thirty years before.
They weren’t the only victims in a killer’s twisted plot. And they won’t be the last.
As the missing pieces of Faith’s and Macy’s dark lives snap into place, Faith is becoming more terrified by what she sees—and by what she must do to save her sister and herself from the past.
Mary Burton, whose latest novel is THE LIES I TOLD, loves writing suspense, getting to know her characters, keeping up with law enforcement and forensic procedure, morning walks, baking, and tiny dachshunds. She also enjoys hunting down serial killers, which she does in her New York Times and USA Today bestselling novels. Library Journal has compared her work to that of Lisa Jackson and Lisa Gardner, and Fresh Fiction likened her writing to that of James Patterson.
Mary is routinely featured among the top ten writers in Amazon’s Author Rankings for romantic suspense, thriller and mystery. Upon publication, her novels, including NEVER LOOK BACK and BURN YOU TWICE, consistently rank high on the Kindle eBooks Store Bestseller List. Her novels CUT AND RUN and YOU'RE NOT SAFE were nominated for the Romance Writers of America’s RITA Award for Romantic Suspense.
A Richmond native, Mary is the author of forty-five published novels and five novellas as Mary Burton and as Mary Ellen Taylor.
A member of International Thriller Writers, Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, Novelists, Inc., and Romance Writers of America, Mary is known for creating multiple suspense stories connected by characters and/or place.
Anyone who has picked up a novel by Mary Burton knows she does romantic suspense and does it very well and Cut and Run is no exception. This novel is a bit more on the thriller side than the romance but there’s still that relationship between the characters that fans want to see.
When a body of a man is found Faith McIntyre is the active medical examiner on the case and after her examination she tries to make contact with the victim’s daughter, Macy Crow. What Faith doesn’t know is that Macy does make her way to town and begins looking into her father’s murder herself being an FBI agent.
Macy however makes the mistake of catching the attention of the wrong person and is run down by a truck. Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden shows up at the scene of the accident to find the injured woman looks exactly like Faith whom he has been seeing. This leads Faith and Hayden to begin looking further into the case.
Cut and Run of course is one that changes the point of view along the way mostly being the two main characters but also a few other views mixed in. The story however is one that is easy to follow as secrets of the past came hauntingly back to mix in with the intensity of the current time. Some may want to see a bit more romance but I rather enjoyed this one for the thrilling ride that is was and would definitely recommend checking it out.

I liked this book. I found it to be a really well done romantic suspense novel. This is a stand-alone novel but I did find a connection to another one of her books, The Last Move, through the characters which I found interesting. I found this book to be easy to listen to for hours at a time as I worked to try to solve the mystery. I ended up have a great time with this story.
The action starts right away in this book with the discovery of the body of a man that has been tortured. This is just the start of a rather complicated and far-reaching chain of events. I really wasn't sure how everything would work out or how one thing was connected to the next but as the book progressed everything just seemed to fall into place. There are events from the past connected to other things that are happening in the present day which really added to the mystery.
I liked the characters quite a bit. Faith is the medical examiner tasked with working on the initial body. She was smart and dedicated to the job. She was also the kind of person that really worked to help others and got personally involved at times. Macy is Faith's equal in every way and they share a much deeper connection. I wish that Macy could have been a bigger part of the story but I did appreciate what she did add to the tale. Ranger Hayden was good at his job and worked really well with Faith. They made a great team and it was fun to see all the pieces come together.
I thought that Brittany Pressley did a great job with the story. This book had a rather large cast of characters and I thought she handled them all really well. She was able to add a lot of emotion to the story at times and was able to add some excitement to other scenes. This was my first time listening to Brittany Pressley's work but I was really impressed and hope to get the chance to listen to her narration again soon.
I would recommend this book to fans of romantic suspense. I liked that the mystery element to this story seemed to take the main stage with the romance adding a nice extra element. I plan to read more from Mary Burton in the future.
I won a digital copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway and borrowed the audio from Kindle Unlimited.
Initial Thoughts I liked this one but not quite as much as I liked The Last Move by the same author. I was actually surprised to find that this book did have a small link to The Last Move through a character. Both books really are stand alones but the connection is there. Now I am wondering if there are other books that might have some kind of link. The story was pretty complex and spanned over 30 years. There were a few things that I was able to guess and some things that I couldn't. I did enjoy the story overall and thought that the narrator did a great job with the book.

Solid suspense, unexpected twists, strong heroine, good plot and as always underdeveloped romance.
I read this author because of an interesting crime mystery and I accept her abrupt endings and lack of epilogues, but maybe one day she would write it? *pretty please*
I went into this with a completely open mind, with no expectations whatsoever. But, not gonna lie, I was really happy when I sensed romance in the book. So here’s how this romantic suspense went down!
So, pathologist Faith McIntyre has known her whole life that she was adopted but she never really did anything about it. But that changes the moment that Macy Crow appears in her life.
What a fantastic read, this book has a little bit of everything but a lot of surprises that will keep guessing until the end. When Texas Ranger Mitchell Haydon receives a message from an old acquaintance, Jack Crow who has been known to live on the fringes of the law his interest is peaked. Unfortunately for Mr. Crow, he's a little late getting out to the Salvage yard where Crow lives. When Ranger Haydon arrives, let's just say he's chasing off the buzzards who are also interested in Mr. Crow. It looks like ole Jack took whatever secrets that this killer wanted to the grave by the looks of his poor old tortured body and tossed trailer house. Ranger Haydon calls in the reinforcements to see if they could come up with anything useful regarding who did this to the old man who was pretty much a hermit. Medical Examiner Fatih McIntyre and her investigator arrive and take Mr. Crow away and look for the next of kin to identify the body. Mr. Crow had a son, Dirk who lived on the other side of the property who seems to be missing and a daughter Macy who lives in Virginia. They did make contact with Macy, and she drops everything and catches the next flight to Austin. Macy’s first stop is her dad's salvage yard; she's sure that the two initial searches might have missed something. She's right, her dad left her trail, but it was in the right direction. She's back at her hotel room when she sees a clip Faith McIntyre accepting an award regarding a children's home. She's completely dumbfounded by the image Faith; it was like her body double. She sends Faith a note plus a selfie and photo of her FBI identification. She's following her trial to a bar called "Second Chances" when things go wrong. Macy is almost killed after she leaves that bar, Ranger Haydon can't believe what his eyes when approaches the body of Macy laying broken in the street. He's been working with Faith for a long time and knew she was an only child. As I stated earlier this book has so many twists and turns, I'm finding it hard to write this review without spewing spoilers all over the place. Ms. Burton has done it again, another perfect romantic suspense novel that will rival anyone else's out there. I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this galley in exchange for my honest review. The opinions I expressed above are my own.
Mary Burton's books just have everything I could ask for in a Romantic Suspense and this one was no different. With that little bit of romance between Faith and Mitchell, the on-the-edge-of-my-seat suspense, and the massive amount of intrigue, I was completely hooked on this story. It took me through twists and turns and had me guessing at everything. Even when I got to the point where I knew what was going on I still didn't actually know what was going to happen. I loved that it had me so shocked at multiple different times and each turn of the page had me wide eyed.
Overall, this is story-telling at it's finest. Ms. Burton will always be one of my favorite RS authors and each book I read from her only solidifies that fact.

If you happen to read this message, I agree with my friend Alex about the abrupt endings. The mystery in this one is very engaging. In fact, very hard to put down. But still that ending. I would love an epilogue (being a self proclaimed epilogue whore) to balance the dark with love.
Nonetheless, I still love this and enjoyed reading about the heroine, who is very likeable.
"Cut and Run" is a hardcore thriller featuring an evil plot and very sinister characters!! Full of twists and turns with an ending which I didn't see come at all.. Mary Burton does not disappoint..
FBI, Texas Rangers and three missing young girls.. A horrible crime wrapped up in a mystery hidden and concealed for decades.. But this mystery is no longer safe, endangering many lives, and so a killer is sent leaving behind a bloody trail!!
I liked it very much, powerful and brillant.. The strong believable characters plus the gripping story kept me glued to the pages till the end!!
4.5 Stars! I really enjoyed this one! A really fantastic thriller with secrets galore. It's a standalone but I'm thrilled to learn that this author's Criminal Profiler trilogy features one of these characters. I'll be reading it asap!
FBI Special Agent Macy Crowe hurries to Texas when she learns her father has been beaten and murdered. She's determined to find who killed him; but her investigation is cut short when she is injured by a hit and run driver. Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden is working the Crowe murder case when he learns of Macy's injuries. Upon visiting her in the hospital, he is shocked to see she looks exactly like Dr. Faith McIntyre, the County Medical Examiner and the woman he has been seeing for the past few months. Faith is shocked to learn that she has a twin. She knew she was adopted, but her mother would never give her the details. Now she must dig for the secrets of the past which may tie to a series of disappearances.
This story had a lot of twists and turns. Someone has a lot of secrets and they'll do anything to cover them up. I listened to the audiobook and found it very hard to walk away from. I can't wait to read the next book. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
This was not my favorite Mary Burton novel. I usually love her so I am not sure if it was me or the story, but I thought it was just okay. The characters were interesting and most were well developed, but the mystery of the missing girls just did not grab me and keep me on edge. I listened to this on audible and the narrator was really good.
Cut and Run was an incredibly enjoyable read with a fantastic suspense plot and an amazing set of characters.
Medical examiner Faith McIntyre is no stranger to death, but the torture and murder of Jack Crow feels different. After contacting his daughter FBI agent Macy Crow, Faith is awaiting the woman’s arrival when she receives word that Macy was the victim of a hit and run and is barely clinging to life in the hospital. The mystery of what she was doing in Austin after midnight is puzzling. Even more bizarre is the fact Macy is Faith’s mirror image, the twin sister she never knew she had. While following clues Macy left behind, three unmarked graves are discovered on an abandoned ranch containing the remains of women missing for thirty years. With bodies new and old piling up, it becomes clear someone is willing to kill to keep these secrets buried.
Faith always knew she was adopted growing up but she hit roadblocks every time she tried to discover more information. While Faith is secure in who she is, she can’t help but wonder about her past. Faith devotes herself to helping kids without families and spends much of her time helping at a children’s shelter in town. Faith has formed a connection with one of the teenagers there Kat and I really enjoyed their relationship.
Mitchell, the Texas Ranger Faith works with, is the brother of Kate Hayden the female main character of The Last Move which was a nice little bonus for those who’ve read that book. Faith and Mitchell’s relationship is already in place when the book starts although it is a physical only one at first. I enjoyed how much these two understood each other plus the physical scenes were very well done. My only issue with the relationship was that it felt like one minute they were no strings and the next they loved each other.
As to the plot, the connection between Faith and Macy added a neat layer to the story and I found myself really invested in finding out their history. The parts dealing with the three women found buried at the abandoned ranch was also a really good storyline. This author is amazing at weaving together different plots to create an interesting mystery and this book was no exception. There was the perfect amount of suspense and a solid payoff when it came to the big reveal.
Cut and Run was a phenomenal read in terms of the suspense side, I was just hoping for a little more in terms of the romance. Overall though it was an amazing read and I definitely recommend the book if you’re looking for a book with a great suspense plot.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
This book was intense! The murder mystery was suspenseful and the author did a really good job of keeping me in the dark about the villain. I didn't have a solid guess until almost the very end, which kept me glued to the book. For the mystery plot this gets a solid 4 stars. I was hooked from beginning to end. The characters all played a part and the more that was revealed, the more I was antsy to get to the conclusion.
What I loved the most has to be the strong female roles in this story. Faith, Macy and Kat were strong, capable and fearless. I liked that they each contributed to the story and played a dominant role.
I knocked it down half a star because the romance between Faith and Hayden was pretty non-existent. If you completely took the "romance" out, this book would not suffer. Tbh I think it would be better as a strictly mystery/suspense read. The romance was just really cut and dry with them. They were already involved in a purely physical relationship at the start of the story. Then throughout the investigation, the interactions are few and far between and I never felt a real spark of chemistry until the very end. I was surprised how happy I was when both MCs started softening towards the other, but by then it was too little too late for me.
A quick summary of the story . . . When a body is brought to the morgue, Faith is the pathologist who exams the remains of Jack Crow. He's been tortured, killed and his home ransacked. Texas Ranger Mitchel Hayden is investigating his murder. When Faith reaches out to Crow's daughter, Macy, things get interesting fast.
A cold case from 20 years ago is reopened when Crow leaves breadcrumbs for Macy to follow. Her snooping around leads to an attempt on her life. A long lost twin, missing girls, shady adoptions, blackmail and murder lead Faith and Hayden on a twisted path to find the evil master mind behind this new killing spree.
Would I recommend? Romance wise, this was a bust for me but the mystery part was awesome. Really well done. Highly recommended, but don't expect an epic love story. The romance is scarce.

Macy Burton is truly a unique romantic-suspense author. Her plots are never cliché and her heroes and heroines are not what you would expect. She pushes the boundaries and I like that in an author. I sincerely hope that "Cut and Run" is the first in a new series because I love the supporting characters.
Faith McIntyre is the medical examiner and she keeps her life strictly compartmentalized. She has her work, her charity work and her lover and there is very little overlap in those areas. Until. An unconscious woman, a hit and run victim, is found and while she is still alive, Faith is called because this woman has Faith's face. Faith knew she was adopted, she didn't know she was a twin.
Macy Crow is an FBI agent. She received a call that her father was brutally murdered and immediately headed to Texas and began her own investigation which landed her clinging to life after a hit and run. When the investigating Texas Ranger, Mitchell Hayden, sees her and sees that Macy is Faith's mirror image, he is relieved that it isn't his lover, Faith, but is at a loss as to what is going on.
Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden lost his wife to cancer and only has the most physical of relationships. His current lover is Faith McIntyre and she is making him think about more than the purely physical. When he starts investigating the brutal murder of Jack Crow he never envisioned where this case would lead. Thirty years is a long time, but secrets have a way of not staying buried, no matter how long the secret has been buried, especially when the secrets have been murdered. Hayden must now solve thirty year old murders and keep both Faith and Macy safe. 4 1/2-Stars
So, I’ve read 6 of Mary Burton’s books and I’ve really liked them a lot. BUT this one I loved. Here’s why; the storyline was wonderful but sad, about young girls a man considered “baby makers” then killed the girls after he had the baby, until he had the boy he wanted, but mostly I loved the relationship Hayden (the Texas Ranger) and Faith (the Forensic Pathologist). It went from secret meetings in hotel rooms with no kissing and no facing each other while having sex to a slight peck on the cheek to kissing on the lips to falling in love by the end of the book. It was a little romance and sex thrown in with murder and kidnappings to solve.
The ONLY problem I had with the story was that Hayden and Faith referred to his dead wife, who died FOUR years ago, as Hayden’s soul-mate and Sierra’s name was mentioned 23 times. I’m not crazy about a dead spouse being mentioned over and over again while the remaining spouse is falling in love again. Mention her 2 or 3 times but NOT 23 times. Just sayin’
I liked Macy, the FBI agent who was run down within hours of coming to town and Kat, the teenage girl who was taken by the killer in order to lure Faith to him. It really was exciting from beginning to end.
There was graphic sex in this book but certainly NOT erotic. And the F-bomb was used 7 times.
As to the narration: The last Mary Burton I read was also narrated by Brittany Pressley and I gave her 2 stars because it was like she didn’t even care if she sounded manly or not so she ruined the book for me. However, this time the men may have all sounded alike but at least the sounded like men. Great job, Ms. Pressley. As of today I will gladly listen to you narrate.
This is Mary Burton's newest book and for now it's a free read and free listen. You should grab it up, if you haven't already.
If you are a fan of mysteries and suspense books, then, you need to check out author, Mary Burton. This latest offering from Mary does serve up good characters, a nice storyline with a mix of action and intrigue.
I liked Faith. She was a good mixture of intelligent but personable as well. Thus in turn this made her relatable. A very important quality to have in a character. It makes reading a book much easier. There are several other characters featured in this book. They didn't play second string but equal parts to Faith.
Which, I am a fan of this author's and her books. I do have to admit that I struggled in the beginning to really find my footing wit this book. The first chapter or two were good but after that it seemed like there was a lot of time spent in the details of trying to piece everything together. Not that details are not important but too much time spent causes the story to get bogged down. The second half of the book is much better. It is where the most of the action happened. Plus, the story moved faster. There are a few twists along the way.
I read this as my secondary book, just a few pages each day. This wasn't a difficult plot to figure out, but I wasn't expecting it to be. An easy read with characters I liked. I just wish they had been developed a little more in depth.
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
Mary Burton is an experienced thriller writer. She knows how to develop compelling characters, how to give just enough hints in a plot to be intriguing but not confusing. But I wonder if the genre itself is running out of steam. It is getting hard for even good writers to come up with a new angle, a story idea that hasn't been done to death, as it were. All that is left to do is either ratchet up the body count or make the premise unbelievable, or both. "Cut and Run" does a little of both. The plot centers around a scheme to impregnate young women, chain them up in a basement until they deliver, kill them and then sell the babies. If that isn't bad enough, the evildoers start killing each other off years later, along with some innocent bystanders, just to keep the blood flowing. After dealing with all that, the hero and heroine kiss and ride off into the sunset together. I need months of therapy when I lose a dog to old age. These people must be able to turn off all emotions at will. The three stars are because there were times I lost myself in the story. That's worth something.
Faith is a forensic medical examiner. While investigating a recent find she uncovers evidence that her life, as she knew it, might have been riddled with secrets. A woman laying in a hospital bed, having been the victim of a hit-and-run, could be Faith's twin sister. Just who is Macy Crow, FBI agent, and what does she know that was serious enough to make someone run over her and leave her for dead? Mitchell Hayden, local law enforcement, and Faith have been dating and he's helping her with the investigation. It also makes it possible for him to protect the woman he's falling in love with.
Very good book. Lots of intrigue and suspense with just a bit of romance added in. I would definitely recommend this if you're looking for a good book to read on a quiet afternoon.
I am a huge Mary Burton fan! She writes in such a way that I feel like I'm at the scene of the crime and I'm always trying to get one step ahead of her bad guys...and her bad guys are terrible! Cut and Run did not disappoint! Check out my full review on Scandalicious Book Reviews:
I think I read this author's books several years ago. I was impressed then and I'm impressed now! Mary Burton writes romantic suspense (emphasis on suspense) very well! I was hooked on this book as soon as I started it
I know that twins separated at birth is not a new plot twist, but this one was completely different to what I've read before. I had no idea where the plot was going! Ms. Burton writes a great story with amazing characters. I was spellbound throughout and couldn't put this book down. I'm definitely adding this author to my favorites.
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of this book.
Predictable plot, predictable characters. Story centers on young girls being kidnapped, held in a basement and impregnated. Several of the girls are later found in graves at a farmhouse. Can 2 missing girls who are pregnant be found before it’s too late? What happened to the babies and who are they now?
Also contains some brief explicit sex scenes (between main characters- also not appreciated and added nothing to the general plot.) Although the book wasn't terrible and I did want to finish reading it, I'm summing it up with it was just OK. The characters were not real engaging, nor did it leave me wanting for more. Did I mention it was predictable? Unanswered questions remained in my mind (maybe the author meant for the reader to work out their own details) ...Who chose the particular women taken? How where they taken? When were they taken? What more happened to them in the months after their abductions? Characters could have been developed better.
I like the idea and concept, the mystery of missing pregnant teens dating back to the 80s. However it wasn't as thrilling or captivating as I would like. The story didn't have me at the edge of my seat.
