One of Macross's biggest strengths is its focus on a diverse set of characters, and how the unfolding war affects the large cast - from youthful pilots to military officers to antiwar civilians to defectors to singing idol Lynn Minmei, of course.

Another great strength of the series is its inclusion of music as an innate and almost intuitive part of human life, a thing that brings us together in joy, comfort, and hope.

Some of these strengths translate into the comic book adaptation better than others. I especially love the trio of Zentradei spies who switch sides when they get a taste of peanut butter and pop music.

I think the series loses a bit of steam for me when it does the 2 year jump after Dolza's final attack. The characters are war-weary at this point, and the love triangle has gotten tedious.

But overall, Robotech is a dynamic, emotional saga and it's nice to have the concluding volume of Gen1. It is too bad that Titan Comics seems to have given up on publishing Gen2 and Gen3.

A definite improvement over the two previous volumes.

The writing improves dramatically and, for my interests, finally starts adding in background details and more to the story, instead of just rehashing episode-by-episode (to me, the reason to buy media tie-ins is for more information than what the original media provided).

The art improves dramatically as this collection goes on, first noticeably around issue 26, then 31 on is really impressive. Backgrounds are a bit lacking, but the art is (finally) really solid. Like night and day compared to the early issues.

As a little detail, previous to this collection, the lettering was listed as being done by Pinaha, but it looks like it was done on a computer. Here, however, we get a couple of different letterers, including Pinaha, and it looks very human, like it was in the original comics.
Does anyone know if they switched to lettering by hand here?
I'm wondering if Titan was quietly redoing the lettering in the first two volumes, and here just stopped bothering in order to try and get more archives out with less work.
