4.5 Major Crime Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

Wow Graham Smith sure did pack a lot into 99 pages... how he was able to craft this amazing plot and not lose anything in character development in such a short novella is beyond me.... major props to Mr. Smith I’ve read 400 page books where I never got a handle on the characters.... this book is part of a series that focuses on a major crime team.... Harry Evans was once in charge of the team but now is acting as a consultant, the new head of the team Campbell is a little more by the book.... Harry is a little more impulsive and sometimes crosses the line causing a little tension but eventually Campbell turns his head to it.... I liked the dynamics between these two men as well as the rest of the team....

This was a straight up police procedural... a Who done it? it kind of reminded me of a very good episode of Law and Order Major Case Squad.... and that is an absolute compliment that was my favorite series of the franchise.... so in this book I was playing detective right along with Harry and team... trying to figure out who stabbed Julie and why.... and once again I was stumped, but fortunately they were not..... perfect plausible ending that I definitely did not see coming....

Absolutely recommend to fans of crime fiction, police procedurals, and a good who done it.... excited to read the other book in the series I have sitting in my Kindle!

*** thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this fabulous book ***

5☆ Packs a Punch for a Short Novella!

Wow oh wow considering No Comment is a short Story it certainly packs a punch.
It's fast paced, throws you straight into the crime scene, the procedures are exciting and informative, the characters are well written and I can see them getting better as the series develops.

There are secrets, lies, mystery, sex, potential murder, gripping story.

As this is a nice short read I don't want to give anything away as the blurb gives enough insight.

What I will say is the opening scene was gripping, the reader has to use their imagination to uncover what they think might be going on.
But as the case goes on things are really not as they seem.

I really like the team of detectives. All who have their own style of policing.
Including a computer expert who uses  illegal backdoor information, DC Lauren Phillips a flirtatious DC who lures her prey into a false sense of security that ends with them blurting everything out.

Then we have Bhaki who is fairly new to the team but is extremely ambitious, great at his job, will stop at nothing to get results.

Then we have Evans the retired ex Guv of the Major Crimes Team who is blackmailing the new Guv DI Campbell into allowing him to still be part of the team as a consultant.
I really liked Harry Evans
He knows his stuff, well respected, might not get thinhs done the conventional way but he got results. A lovable rogue comes to mind.

I am very excited for this new series.
This is my first book by Graham Smith and I am now excited for more.

No Comment is the Perfect introduction to a new series. I read this in one night. The chapters were short and sharp. It had plenty of suspense, juicy twists, and a cleverly written plot that kept me guessing.

If you enjoy new crime thrillers and like short novellas then this is definitely the book for you.
I can't wait to read the next book to see what's next in store for this crazy bunch of detectives.

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Favorite Quotes:

He knew better than to assume that a good family meant he was a good citizen. Some of the most evil people he’d encountered were from decent families. They would present one face to the world and another to their victims. Their status in life a shield they would hide behind until it was time to swing a sword in private.

That one sentence about female cops explained to Campbell just why such an outwardly attractive man needed to use Tinder to get laid.

The public couldn’t, and probably shouldn’t, know how much investigating certain crimes took from coppers. How there were sleepless nights and nightmares when sleep did come. How relationships failed and how solace was sought at the bottom of a bottle. Sometimes coppers chose drink, and sometimes drink chose them.

My Review:

This was my first experience with Mr. Graham Smith and his unusual yet compelling assortment of coppers who were working under new leadership. The premise was unique and relevant and the storylines were active and cunningly crafted while giving the reader a chance to learn the quirks and personalities of the squad while they were tasked with a puzzling crime. Each member was required to employ their unique skills and personal hidden talents that maybe shouldn’t be looked at too closely, but all their tricks were needed to dig deep and unearth a more devastating and disturbing problem than they had initially anticipated. And I proudly add a new word to my Brit vocabulary list with woodentops – an informal and not so polite term for a British uniformed officer.

No Comment follows on from where the last book in the series finishes. The author has given plenty of background though so I really believe that readers will not feel like they are missing out if they haven’t read any other books in the series. As it is a great series though you are seriously missing out if you don’t read them.

We are taken right into the nitty gritty of things with the attack on Julia Simon. Well from that point on the author had me hook, line and sinker!

I love how the author in each book lets one of the team take the lead and lets them shine. This time it’s the turn of Bhaki and was good to get to know him and his role in the team better. He is quite young so still has a bit to learn but that’s where Harry comes in as he is very much a mentor still to most of them.

The author certainly weaves a truly gripping story leaving me not knowing what to expect. No way could I have envisioned the twists and turns that were about to hit me. I loved that even in a novella the author still manages to satisfy my every need that I would expect from a full length story but within a novella.

No Comment was yet another brilliant read from the author. Quick, gritty with shocks and surprises galore that left me feeling like an emotional wreck by the end. I loved that I felt so many emotions and is definitely the sign of a great writer.

My thanks to Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

I am going to start and end this review with one word…WOW!!

This is my first time reading anything by author Graham Smith and I was impressed! No Comment is the fifth book in the DI Harry Evans series which is set in Cumbria. I was able to enjoy this novella without having read the previous books. But I will be going back and reading the rest in the series.

First and foremost, as an owner myself of a three-legged cat I just want to give a shout-out to Tripod, the three-legged dog in this story owned by former DI Harry Evans. I loved the realistic and believable characters of the Major Crimes Team. I appreciated how the author was able to express the feelings of former DI Evans. I felt bad for him being in retirement and still wanting to feel that he is needed. Although I liked all the characters my favorite would have to be Harry Evans. I liked his edginess and how he isn’t all about policy and procedure. Harry is just interested in catching the bad guys and if some rules get broken along the way…then so be it. I love books with realistic dialogue between characters and this one was spot-on.

I spent the whole book trying to figure out who the perpetrators were and why they did what they did. My attention was piqued at chapter one and stayed that way until I finished. Little by little the author gave us more information but I was guessing right until the end. And what about that ending you ask?…again one word…WOW!

No Comment is one of those books that you can’t stop thinking about once it’s over. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves crime fiction. I will definitely be reading more from author Graham Smith and he is going on my list of favorite authors. I am giving No Comment by Graham Smith 5 Stars all the way.

I would like to thank Graham Smith, Caffeine Nights Publishing, and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book.

Well the title may be No Comment but OMG I am shouting from the roof tops about this book, well to be honest about the whole DI Harry Evans series. Graham Smith has again delivered a full on story where not a word is wasted. There is no fillers, no frills just one crazy, get the job done, unorthodox team of pure investigation and determination. I can’t even say Lauren without smiling, just love this anything goes lady to get the bad guys.
Now I do have to admit to being partial to a little DI Harry Evans or simply Mr. Harry Evans now, having read all of the previous books. He really is a cool dude, that has me cringing at times, so I had been gutted when he ‘stood down’ from DI in the last book but what a story that was! OMG, sorry, going off track there, but it was! Well as promised he has returned in his new role in an advisory position and boy it worked perfectly for me.
The opening scene is quite surreal but that is what makes it oh so chilling, it isn’t somewhere remote and off the beaten track, not some weird underground secret location but an ordinary kitchen, it could be your kitchen, definitely not mine, nooooooo! tea cooking and a woman tied and laid on the table being opened up like a Sunday joint! And I can hear her thoughts, bloody hell she is one brave lady.
Unfortunately to get to the truth, a victim’s life has to be pulled apart. People lead lives that are littered with red herrings because we are different people to everyone we know. The team have to really think out of the box to solve this crime and it becomes very personal, not just another case but something they can all relate to. What a gripping story this is. It really knocked the stuffing out of me emotionally and a real tough one for them all. Love how Graham Smith can make a story so powerful just by leading me to my own imagination. I know where he is going and my mind takes me as far as I need to go the rest of the way. Just awesome!
I received a review copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

When Julie Simon's is found stabbed in the stomach, DC Amir Bhaki is the first detective on the scene.  His gut instinct tells him this is more than a burglary gone wrong, the whole crime scene looks not quite right. The new DI in charge is Campbell, he has big shoes to fill as he follows in the footsteps of his predecessor, as along with his team of DC Phollips and Chrisholm they work the case with assistance of Harry as they find themselves in a confusing case.

For a novella this doesn't half pack a punch.  Addictive from the outset as the hard hitting details unfurl and have you guessing at the motive behind the crime, and it was one I didn't guess until the author led me and allowed me to become aware of it.

The investigative team are dealing with a new boss who has his own ways of doing things; by the book.  A step away from their previous gut instinct boss.  But some of their slightly unorthodox ways of going about their jobs does get some results, so even thought it rankles Campbell does let some things slide.

The author has worked the dynamics between the team very well in such a short space of time and is a credit to his writing skills. There is the genuine feel of a team that has worked together before, and the uncertainty of having another person joining them. They are definitely a unique bunch and by the end of the story I felt I had got a good idea of them, their characters their traits and a little of what makes them tick. It is enough to leave me wanting to know more about them all and also how they will continue in the future books.

This is a read from a new to me author, though I do have a couple of this his books on my kindle yet to be read.  So if you are after a quick, hard hitting, crime thriller then I highly recommend giving No Comment a go.

Eeeeeeeeeek! It seems like FOREVER that we have been waiting for the next in the Harry Evans series and then Mr Smith teases us with this fantastic, wee novella! NAUGHTY! But never fear, as a full novel is out in May and that, my bookish friends, is SUPERB!
I was thrilled to be back in Cumbria with the Major Crimes Team and that rogue (now ex DI) Harry Evans where we were met with secrets, shame, guilt, the protection of loved ones, breach of trust and the search for the truth. #AllTheBOOMS
Mr Smith instantly grabs the readers attention with his opening chapters/prologues and this was no different. HOOKED! I liked the way the author used a real, and somewhat uncomfortable topic but dealt with it sensitively. Be prepared for all your emotions to be drained by the time you get to the end of the book though… it is just one of those reads! The author also included the wider victims (friends/family) who are affected, this just added to the authenticity of this intricate and compelling plot. Despite being a novella, by the time I was finished I felt like I had read a full book – that is another thing that this author does well. Fabulous, Mr Smith! The fingers of suspicion are pointed at a few people and Mr Smith’s knack of engaging the reader has you following the clues alongside the FMIT.
Character-wise, this book was all about Bhaki more than any other member of the FMIT. He is sensible and seems at times to be drawn into DI Campbell’s (Harry replacement) way of doing things but not so much because he is a follower- more so because he does not want to see the FMIT disbanded. He is loyal and dedicated and this book lets us see a more vulnerable side to him. I loved it!!
Lauren – I know she is a marmite character, but I adore this lady! Sassy, confident, knows her worth – she is one gal not to be messed with. Very loyal to Evans and the FMIT – she follows orders…most times…and always gets the job done. No one will ever change my mind about Lauren and I hope she never changes! LOVE HER!
Awww- Harry, Harry…Harry. You just gotta love this guy. Such an arse, but a heart of gold. Following on from I Know Your Secret, we see Harry recovering from a pretty nasty beating – he brought it all on himself for reasons…well, read the book and you will find out more. But the author does not shy away from putting his main characters through the wringer that’s for sure and I can only imagine that we have not seen the last of the hardships Mr Evans will face. Needless to say, once he recovers, Harry will be starting his consultancy role and that should be fun! #PoorPoorHarry!
Gracie is another brilliant character – a young girl with a lot on her shoulders and Mr Smith brings her character alive beautifully. Same goes for Jack (her bother) – his vulnerability, and desire to protect those he cares about is heart-breaking. WOW! WOW! WOW!
Maureen Leighton and DI Campbell as well as other familiar characters are not left out of the mix, but if I carry on – there will be no point in reading the novella! So…do I recommend this book? You bet your sweet arse I do! Emotive, hard-hitting and a page-turning read, Graham Smith has once again nailed it! This quick but totally satisfying novella will have you eagerly waiting for When The Water Recedes (novel) and OMG – you are in for a treat with that! Don’t forget to follow the rest of this cracking tour!

A woman brutally attacked in her own home – her son imprisoned, and her sister appalled at the double life the victim was leading brings DI Campbell and his team in contact with dark criminals whilst DI Harry Evans cannot help but crack his brain to get to the bottom of it…

Introduction
DI Harry Evans

Julie Simmons has no way of escaping the nightmare as the knife approaches her abdomen, about to slice through her flesh. Still, she does her best to focus on the appearances of her attackers. Will the police ever find them? Upon examining the scene, the new DI Campbell and DC Amir Bhaki soon realise that whoever cut the woman, were no ordinary intruders – was Julie targeted and if so why and by whom?

Storyline
Whoever attacked Julie must have had a personal motive and Bhaki decides to inform his former boss, DI Harry Evans, currently recovering from a heavy beating. The case intrigues Evans, even more so because he recognises Julie’s name, aware as he is that Bhaki deliberately draws him in, he cannot resist getting involved. DI Campbell is determined to stop the ‘renegade’ tactics used by his team that, apart from Bhaki, consists of DC Lauren Phillips, in the habit of using her good looks to get results, and computer nerd DS Neil Chisholm. The discovery of Julie’s secret and her son’s imprisonment provide them with leads to follow, still, none of it explains the motive for the brutal and vicious attack. With Evans cracking his brain and Campbell eager for results you would think the case will be solved quickly but instead, it takes a sinister turn…

My Thoughts
No Comment is the first Harry Evans story I’ve read and, as it happens, it looks like the first story in which he’s no longer a detective. His tragic past is somewhat disclosed – but I’ll refrain from mentioning it as its only impact is the healing of the injuries following a self-sought beating – Evans’ brain is as sharp as before. I loved how his (former) team still held him in such high regards and came to him for advice. Must be so difficult for his successor and I felt sympathy for DI Campbell – he obviously is aware of the team’s loyalty to their former boss and struggles to keep them within the boundaries, as set by his superiors.

To me, it is always confronting when you meet a victim just before they’re about to get killed or being tortured. It’s an instant draw into the tale, to empathise with the victim whilst secretly feeling glad it’s not you lying there on the table, about to be cut open. Julie Simon – she’s a strong character, independent, master of her own life. But, after finishing the tale, I thought again about the violent opening scene and, well.. I came to the conclusion that I cannot quite fathom her mindset and behaviour under the circumstances – not only in the described opening scene but even more so in the period before that – however, I will refrain from mentioning it as it would give the plot away.

Also, there was an inconsistency which, although it annoyed me a bit, did not have an impact on the plotline. Furthermore, the ending felt very abrupt which leads me to conclude that No Comment has all the makings of a complete novel, a spellbinding detective thriller instead of the novella it is. So many ingredients and stories here, I’d love to have more background and more insight into what happened and the reasons why. Having said that, No Comment is a fast-paced, gripping and at times harrowing thriller with a dark plotline – a captivating novella as a taster for the next Harry Evans thriller!

Harry Evans had left the Major Crimes Team and this is the first case the team have to face without their former DI. Are they up to the challenge?! Can they find Julie’s attacker? What’s Harry going to do with all this spare time on his hands?? So many questions and guess what? You can find out the answers by reading No Comment.

No Comment opens with a rather distressing chapter; it’s brutal but I’ve come to expect that from Mr Smith, particularly after his previous Evans novel I Know Your Secret. There was definitely wincing going on as the extent of Julie’s injuries were revealed! But as the story develops, we start to see different sides of the team. Amir Bhaki comes into his own with this investigation and hard man Harry shows a more vulnerable side after the heartbreak he’s suffered over the series and now his enforced retirement, losing the job he loves and lives for. With Harry out the office, Campbell is now determined to get the respect of the team that his predecessor had and eradicate the shortcuts (aka bad habits) that previously allowed.

This is a short read at only 99 pages but it is action packed and you definitely don’t have much time to catch your breathe as the team explore every avenue of investigation. Graham Smith has a way of writing that puts you right there in the midst of the action. You can read this novella as a stand alone but to fully appreciate the some of the references, you really do need to go back and read the series from the start.

I have to say I love returning to Cumbria and the world of Harry Evans. The series gets better each time and I wait with great anticipation for each instalment. And I can not wait for the upcoming When The Waters Recede!!!

A gripping novella that will take you into a dark place

Juie Simon sits in her kitchen..terrified..Someone takes one of her own kitchen knives and stabs her in her stomach..When DI Campbell and DC Amir Bhaki arrive at the scene they are perplexed as to what could have gone on ...Bhaki phones his old boss DI Harry Evans who is now a consultant with the force...Then the team begin to look into Julies past with no stone left unturned...but who would commit such crime...as Julie lies in the hospital..They find themselves looking closer to those that knew her.....but the three w.are in the forefront of their minds Who ..?What and Why...This novella from Graham Smith will keep you on the edge of your seat...Here we see a gentler side of DI Evans...and DI Bhaki young in years yet wise beyond them has come a long way...The Major Crimes Scene are a mixed bunch but when they are on the case...with DI Evans...Y'all better watch out..

I am a big fan of Harry Evans and it feels like ages since we have caught up with him. But I am glad to report it has certainly been worth the wait. And for those of you that haven't read any of this series you won't be disappointed.

The author brings us a page turning cracking story which is only 99 pages long with a jam packed gritty and twisted plot. One of the things I love about this author is he always gives us a well writen on the edge of your seat read.

Single mother Julie Simon who is found in her kitchen who has been brutally stabbed. Cumbrias Major Crimes Team are on the case and we follow an investigation to find out who assaulted her.

I was hooked from the very first page, in fact I couldn't read this fast enough. This will certainly have you guessing until the end. I am so glad that a full length novel is out soon.... this story has certainly tickled my taste buds.

I highly recommend it for fans old and new giving it 4.5 stars.

I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing a previous DI Harry Evans novella, Matching the Evidence plus the latest full-length novel in the series, I Know Your Secret. More recently Smith has been focussing on his Jake Boulder series (which I also love) so I was delighted to hear Harry and the team were to make a very welcome, long-awaited return.

Smith has managed to pack one heck of an almighty punch into this latest Major Crimes Team novella. It was so good to be reacquainted with the Cumbrian MCT again. The memories of these well developed and fascinating characters came flooding back. And for the record, I still don’t like DC Lauren Phillips! I was, however, feeling slightly more positive towards the dastardly DI Campbell this time around. So who knows, my feelings for Lauren may change with time…ha! (I’m due to read the next full-length novel in the series, titled When the Waters Recede, soon. By the end, I expect I’ll be back to loathing Campbell again. He’s that kind of character!).

One of the things I love about this series is the way that every member of the team is an individual and they have something unique to add to the story. Smith seems to effortlessly spotlight one character in particular per novel/novella giving you an insight into what makes them tick. This time the story focusses on DC Amir Bhaki and his gut feeling about the violent scene he encounters in Julie Simon’s kitchen.

Would I recommend this book? I would, yes. It’s probably best to read the previous novellas and full-length novels before you get to No Comment though. The MCT carries a lot of history and there are things which may not make immediate sense otherwise. In my usual wannabe amateur detective way, I was trying to work out whodunit and why-they-dunit but I completely failed. The twist is quite unexpected and will leave you with a gaping jaw. It did me, anyway! Smith is such a talented writer and I cannot wait to read more from him. Roll on When the Waters Recede!

Four stars out of five.

I chose to read and review an eARC of No Comment. The above review is my own unbiased opinion.

No Comment is a novella to fit in with Harry leaving the teams as their boss, and coming in under his new role of consultant.
A grippingly clever read, that packed a punch within its pages.
Highly recommend you read these in order - as well as being a brilliant series you get the full benefit of the teams background and working relationships.
It was great to see them back, even within the novella you get a sense of unease. It packs a punch within the shortness of the story, so don't be fooled by the novella title.
Connections between the team and it is a cracking read to keep you going until the next full Harry novel. Thank you to caffeine nights for a review copy, all thoughts are my own on this review.

This novella/short story is just under 100 pages, and although these sorts of short books aren't always my cup of tea, this was a really enjoyable bite sized read.

The Major Crimes Team are handed a case involving the stabbing of a single mother Julia Simon. Even though a short story Smith manages to pack a fair bit into this latest installment. This is almost like a mini catch up to see where the team are and what they are up to.

We see DI John Campbell trying to replace the now retired Harry Evans, however somehow I don't see it happening. What I did get was a small but jam packed mini investigation with colleagues such as DC Amir Bhaki and DC Lauren Phillips making a welcome return. Thankfully this seems like the perfect time to read this with a full length novel entitled 'When The Waters Recede' due in May.

This book certainly doesn’t feel like a novella, so much packed in to keep you hooked. Great to have Harry back, even though he’s now an ex detective. His team are still loyal and still need his help and long may this continue. Seems like forever since the last book in this series but within a few pages you remember everything about the team and how they never give up on any case they are involved in.
The first chapter grabs you by the throat and the pace doesn’t let up at all.
Yet another great book from the author, looking forward to the next one in this series.

I’m a fan of crime novels. Especially when it is crime only without a lot of love story mixed within.
This one is a pure crime book and can be read as a standalone. However, more often than not I had the impression, I was missing huge chunks of a story that took place before this book. I felt that I was missing a lot of character development, since there was almost none in this novella. I get that it was only a short book, but a little bit of development would have been nice.
The plot itself was good, it was thought through and the twist in the end really was not what I expected or even could have guessed, so points for this surprise.
The overall mood from this book was rather dry. It read like a written version of Medical Detectives or any other crime documentation. There were no feelings portrayed, no real conflict, nothing that kept my blood pumping other than the prologue. Looking at the other books of this author it can be explained with him coming from nonfiction books rather than fiction.
The actions and thoughts of the detectives were strange. Sometimes they dragged on, sometimes they were so rushed, my head was spinning and I kept second guessing my reading abilities, because I could not follow. We got hints and snippets of some underlying conflict that did nothing for the plot and painted the main characters in a rather negative light. While, in the beginning, I had every intention of looking up the other books with these characters, all of those flaws and mistakes made me decide against it. There were to many things that impacted my reading experience negative for me to look for the other books.
All in all it was a short, fast-paced book that was an okay read. Maybe I didn’t get what the author wanted to be the message, but it was definitely not my sort of book.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I took on No Comment to review. In my experience, crime detective novellas more often than not go one of two ways: boring, OTT details with little character development and a predictable plot; or too little details with a promising beginning, and then a weak ending. Very rarely does an author get it right in such a short length of space.

No Comment caught me by surprise. It was short, sharp, with an interesting twist, and it packed a punch on character development.

As a novella featuring characters from a longer series of books, there were hints at backstory, but they never really detracted from the impact of this particular case, which the Major Crimes team was working. If anything, it only added to it.

I loved the emotions, the reality of the trauma that police and detectives deal with when working on major crimes, and even though the end left me feeling lost and a little heartbroken, it was so true to life that I couldn’t fault Smith for doing that to me.

My favourite character out of the whole team has to be Lauren, who uses her sexuality to her advantage and takes no prisoners while doing it. Not even her boss gets away with his attraction to her.

More than that, I loved Harry Evans himself. Retired in this novella, he clearly has a lot of emotional trauma he needs to work through, but instead of tormenting himself and losing himself in alcohol or other unhealthy coping mechanisms, he tries to work through it in healthier ways. Although, Mr Evans, getting the snot beat out of you is not healthy, and hopefully that was a once off.

I thoroughly enjoyed No Comment, and will be on the lookout for the full-length novels from Graham Smith.

Now, I am not usually a fan of novellas as I’m a kind of greedy reader, I tend to want a full plate in front of me and not a starter! But having read all of the novella’s that Graham has written for this series let me tell you this man packs a full 3 course gourmet menu into one packed dish! And “No Comment” is no different!

What a #KillerHook for an opening, I was immediately grabbed and thrust right into the heart of the story: Julie Simon is being burgled but the thieves are not interested in the usual kind of haul and Julie ends up in hospital fighting for her life.

And so #TeamEvans is back but this time DI Harry Evans is firmly on the sidelines as he has been retired out of the force following the trial of his wife’s rapist. The Major Crimes Team is now headed up by DI Campbell, a DI whose practice is in direct contrast to Evans. It’s Campbell’s first case without the shadow of Evans and he has to wonder if he will infiltrate the strong loyalty that remains within the team for his predecessor. Will he also be able to maintain the success rate of Evans without resorting to his maverick ways? While Evans goes by his gut instinct, Campbell plays it strictly by the book and it is clear that the team still look to Evans for guidance. As the investigation is underway it is clear that the team still think of Evans as their “guv” feeding him snippets of the case and looking to him for advice. Evans is both flattered and frustrated by this as he can’t become officially involved unless Campbell asks him.

All the favourites are still there and in particular DC Amir Bhaki, comes to the fore in this investigation. He is kind of conflicted over the two styles of management but Evan’s influence is still clear to see. I loved Bhaki in this book! DC Lauren Phillips remains outwardly as flirtatious as ever but we all know there is a real depth to her character and she is one of my favourites next to Evans: she certainly gives Campbell his character in this novella. She is one lady not to be messed with that’s for sure! Maureen Leighton, Carlisle’s answer to The Godfather makes an appearance in No Comment and the relationship between herself and Evans is one that is bound to cause further ructions as this series grows.

The plot! Well what can I say! For such a short book it was jam-packed with everything you look for in a police procedural; twists and turns, red herrings and a race to find out the story behind the attack. This one will have you reeling as the truth is finally uncovered and there is no way that I seen that coming!

The Harry Evans series remains one of my favourites from Graham Smith and I love how each book just follows on seamlessly from the last, it really does feel like you are with the team in real-time and not just popping in once a year! “No Comment” was a fast paced, hard-hitting and compelling story all wrapped up in that delightful twistedness that is Graham Smith’s mind! Would I recommend you read this book, eh that will be a damn right I do, in fact do yourself a favour and get out and read the whole series!

The irrepressible Harry Evans is back in Graham Smith’s novella No Comment and we see him in a different role following his retirement from the Major Crimes Team. Acting as an advisor to the team who have a murder case in which a single mother has been found stabbed in the stomach in her kitchen, Evans and the rest of the team quickly discover that nothing is as it seems.

Those who are familiar with the series of books will be pleased to know that DI Harry Evans continues to play an important part in the book. Those who haven’t yet been acquainted with Evans and the Major Crimes Team will find that this book acts perfectly as a standalone. Fans of police procedural novels should definitely check this series out if they haven’t already.

No Comment is a novella of around 100 pages. The brevity of this book takes nothing away from the story that lies within. Smith’s perfect use of the English language and his way of making every word count ensures that No Comment has everything you would expect from a full-length novel.

Pacey and full of surprises, No Comment delivers on all counts of great plot, twists and turns, and first-rate writing. Smith had me on the back foot as I tried to figure out who had committed the crime and why the stabbing had happened, and I was pleased to find myself way off the mark. Totally unpredictable, No Comment gets a huge thumbs-up for original plot.

A cracking quick read, No Comment is a great addition to the DI Harry Evans series and marks Graham Smith out as one of the authors to go to if you are after a good police procedural.

My thanks to Graham Smith for the advance copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Well, what to say about this novella? I don't read a lot of crime as other genres, but this was again part of my blogging out of my comfort zone. I felt like this novella was in between books, so although I understood the plot, I am sure I would have loved it more if I had read the rest of the books. This was a very packed plot for a novella, and I really enjoyed it. I have made a note to check out the rest of Smith's books, and delve deeper into his world, and his characters. I really enjoyed this short read - I won't spoil the plot - I hate that but WOW. Well worth a read. 4 stars from me!

I can’t believe I’ve missed this fantastic author, and I’m so glad I’ve managed to read all the Harry Evans series. It’s time they brought these sort of coppers back to sort out crime!!!

This novella was just wonderful and I whizzed through it into the early hours. Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Short and very sweet - the telling of it, at least. And also the glimpses of Harry Evans as he watches his team from the sidelines.

No Comment is the third novella and fifth book in the DI Harry Evans series; it was great to be back with the Cumbrian Major Crime Team who are investigating a case that appears to be aggravated burglary gone wrong. Single mother Julie Simon has been left fighting for her life after a stab wound to her stomach but there is a lot more to this investigation than meets the eye. Julie’s son is serving time in a young offender’s prison after being found with a stash of drugs but he denies any knowledge of them and is insistent he was set up. Is Julie protecting her son or is her son protecting her??

I love the interaction between Harry and his former colleagues. Although they are now under the supervision of DI Campbell, Harry is the one they go to for an insight into proceedings thanks to a little matter of him blackmailing his way into getting a consultancy role. Harry has in depth knowledge of the area and its inhabitants so has a greater understanding than Campbell and let’s not forget that Harry has always had a way of extracting information from people!!

Harry is one of those loveable rogues; you agree with his methods because they get the job done. My favourite character in this novella was DC Amir Bhaki; a gentle soul who is determined to get justice for Julie and her family.

Another great read from Graham Smith and I can’t wait to read the next instalment (When the Waters Recede).

This may be a novella but, by 'eck, it packs one hell of a punch into the mere 100 pages or so. For the uninitiated, i.e. me, Harry Evans is a retired DI rom Cumbria's Major Crimes team. This book find Harry in a bit of a mess emotionally and physically, the reasons for which become clear as you read the story. I've not read any of the prior books so I guess, for me, there were potentially some minor spoilers in terms of the recap of Harry's former life, but nothing that will stop me from enjoying reading the first books in the series.

From the very beginning this book has me gripped. We are faced with a woman who is being attacked in a rather brutal way, the reasons unknown and yet it is clear that she know's why. It will take the readers the length of the novella to get to the root cause of the attack but you will be faced with clues and suppositions as the Major Crimes team investigate. As to which is the actual reason ... well you need to read to find out as I'm not going to tell you.

Although this was only a short story, the tension was kept up throughout, the mystery and intrigue none abating as I wanted to learn just what as going on. The violence was kept off the page for the most part, so for the squeamish amongst you, you have nothing to fear, but that doesn't mean that Graham Smith won't keep you on edge. He absolutely blooming well will. This isn't a story which needs to be gratuitous and the strength of the novella lies in the plotting and the team which Smith has created to support the story.

And what a team they are. While I may not have met them before, the author has done a great job of establishing character, so much so that I got a real feeling for each of them and was immediately wanting to learn more. From DC Amir Bhaki to DC Lauren Phillips, the tech savvy DS Neil Chisholm or the relatively new and not quite fully accepted Harry Evans replacement, DI Campbell, each ones individual quirks and style emanated from the page and made me want to get to know them better. But it is Harry Evans who you want to know the most. He's old school, hard hitting, not quite able to retire, not quite willing to follow protocol. A flawed protagonist and although my introduction was brief, I loved getting to know a bit more about him, And Tripod. I really love Tripod. Sounds like my kind of dog.

The writing in this novella is tight, all driving the action onward at a perfect speed, with no ounce of fat or wasted paragraphs to be found. I raced through it, almost disappointed that it wasn't longer to be fair, and I can tell already this is a series I need to catch up on. I have the next release ready and waiting for me, so I can't wait to make a start on it. If you've never met Harry and Co before, then this could be a great place to start. But then why not go back to the beginning. From what I've seen here, you're in for one heck of a treat. Brilliant stuff.

I have enjoyed all of the books I have read so far by Graham Smith so he had a lot to live up to when I started reading No Comment...

Well now I have finished the book I have to say I loved it, it was a really quick (99 pages) and very enjoyable read - I would definitely say that this one can easy be read as a stand alone but once you have read this, you are going to want to check out the rest of the books featuring DI Harry Evans - you have been warned!!

The story is gritty, full of action and it gripped me from the outset as we are thrown straight in to the story. I read it in one sitting and I don't think anything could have interrupted me reading the book, I was completely engrossed!

Definitely 5 stars from me for this one - very, very highly recommended!!
