Cheating H. Dunno how I could’ve given this book 5 stars if the H was a cheater…me being a dumb teenager is how.

But after they had sex, they went to his home where his mistress lived and he had sex with the mistress while the h was waiting outside. 🤮

The only reason I even gave this one star is because I had to.

I found this book very trashy, as I'm coming to realize most of Brenda Joyce's books are. There are always these comments slammed in there about the guys' pasts. It's enough to know that he's not a virgin, not by a long shot, but when you sneak in these comments about all the whores he's been with, it's unnecessary and it's disgusting.

That's bad enough, but in this book she actually goes so far as to have him have sex with the Mexican woman he's living with. Her son, which was surprisingly from another man (thank God for small favors), also lives there, but he calls 'ol Shoz papa. How sweet.

Lucy has sex with him the first day she sees him, which was trashy. He goes out of his way to be mean and cruel to her repeatedly throughout the whole book. I'm not sure if that was supposed to be viewed as charming from the reader, but I can tell you I didn't find anything about him charming.

Then he goes home to his home, and he and Lucy have had some sort of fight, so they're on the outs. The boy comes running out and calls him Papa, and the Mexican woman is there, presumably his wife. Lucy is a tinsy bit put out by this, not enough to leave, mind you. Oh no, she stays inside the house and is sitting idly by while she suspects they're having sex in their room.

And she's actually right!

I almost couldn't believe my eyes when he rolls over and just has sex with that tramp as if there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. But, to make it not so bad, he's picturing her as Lucy. Well that just makes everything A-okay, doesn't it?

I should have quit the book when I first wanted to, oh, about the time in the beginning when I realized he was just teaching the spoiled brat a lesson.

I won't be reading another one of Brenda Joyce's books, because after reading several of them I'm coming to realize her books and these "virile" men just come hand in hand.

Amazing 5th in the Bragg Saga!

This was an amazing installment in Joyce's Bragg series (see list below), the sweeping saga of an American family. I could not put it down.

Set in America and Cuba in 1897 (prologue in 1890), it begins in New York with Shoz Savage, a law student wrongly imprisoned for theft, having been framed by a jealous, married lover. He is a "half breed" (Apache like Derek Bragg) and his lover was a wealthy woman of society whose word no one would doubt. Shoz escaped from prison and now, 7 years later, he has turned from the law and is running guns into Cuba to support the struggle for independence from Spain. While in Paradise, Texas, the home of Derek and Miranda Bragg, Shoz meets their granddaughter, Lucy Bragg, Rathe and Grace's daughter, who is there on vacation. Their attraction is instant and overwhelming but their worlds are far apart. And, THAT is only the beginning of this incredible adventure.

Shoz Savage is an example of a man whose promise is set back by others' avarice, prejudice and lust, making his heart grow cold. But still, deep inside, he has never stopped longing for a family and a life of significance. Lucy begins as a beautiful, indulged, highborn lady, heiress to the New York Bragg fortune, but her Bragg mettle is proven when the circumstances turn against her and she has to fight for the man she loves. You will love these two, I promise.

I have read all the books in this series thus far and have rated them all high. Joyce weaves wonderful tales of the frontier and developing America (and in Dark Fires and Scandalous Love, Victorian England). They are complex stories of great passion, adventure and action, stories of strong women and stronger men--and never a dull moment. These will keep you up late at night reading!

Когато си мислех, че поелата посока на сюжета ще остане в конкретната рамка на заформилото се приключение или ситуация, до края на книгата, то плотът се обръщаше и изменяше в друга посока и така поне 4-5 пъти се заблуждавах. Нямаше скука, имаше си шаблонните неща, но пък бяха написани динамично, вълнуващо, опасни, а любовната история неромантизирана. Двамата герои доста израснаха и се промениха, особено Люси.

This story has all the makings of a frustrating romance. Lucy Bragg was a character that one can be considered as progressive thinker. She didn't have any qualms being involved with a half-breed outside of the marital bed. She was strong but not as opinionated as her activist mother, Grace Bragg but she's no wilting violet either.

Shozkay Cooper is considered as a half-breed (like most of the men in this series) who found himself in lust enamoured with the socialite. Their lives couldn't be any more different: he, a gun runner for the revolution in Cuba, and she, contented to live the life her upbringing afforded. She's engaged to be married to the son of a Senator - a perfect candidate to extend the Bragg's clout in the society.

Their relationship was, yet again, exhausting to read. I think I've reached my limit of bickering, snapping couples.

What I love about this book is the social and political relevance of Cuba's revolution and how it directly impacted the country's relationship with the US. Although this novel is predominantly romance, I think Joyce did an amazing job writing a book with historical importance.

Good book! I enjoyed the earlier series, but I think that was because I was more familiar with main characters.
This book is about Derek Braggs granddaughter. We don't read too much about her in previous books so this one seems a little off from the rest. I still enjoyed it! It was a fun read.

The first thing Shozkay did after escaping from prison was to return to the home of the woman who put him there. He had sex with her to punish her and left.
Shoz had an Apache mother and his father left with his second wife to live off the reservation. Shozkay's mother remained with her people. Shoz was raised on a ranch near Bakersfield. He quit school because of all the bullying he received. He later went back to school and met Marianne Claxton the summer before he started his last year at NY Law School. She was married and she caught him in her bed with one of her maids. The maid got fired and a ring was found in Shoz's pants that Marianne claimed was hers. He was arrested immediately and sentenced to seven years in prison. It was because of her jealousy and obsession with Shoz and the fact that her husband was a senator. The senator was embarrassed that his wife was sleeping with someone other than him. Shoz escaped from prison after seven months. He was on his way to Paradise, Texas to purchase guns for Cuban rebels. He met and paid a contact for the guns and he buried them just outside of town. The contact who was to pick up the guns was delayed.
Lucy Bragg was granddaughter to Derek Bragg who was now a very wealthy and well liked rancher. Lucy was always in trouble of some kind. She wanted to go to her grandfather's birthday party with Joanna and not wait for her parents. Her father was in Cuba and her mother had a political fund raiser to attend. A chaperone was arranged but she got sick at the last minute. Lucy talked Joanna into going along with her on their own. They rode a train most of the way to Paradise but missed the local and Lucy decided to purchase a car. She didn't know how to drive and headed out of town in the wrong direction. She hit a pothole and broke the axle of the car. They had passed Shoz who was walking and thumbing a ride. He noticed the car and went to see what was going on. He got the car running in exchange for a ride, then they ran out of gas and had to walk. They stopped when it got dark and Lucy and him argued. Lucy stomped off into the woods and when she didn't come back, Shoz went to find her. She was upset and Shoz was attracted to her. Lucy was a virgin but also strangely attracted to Shoz and they had sex. Joanna saw them.
The next morning, Shoz left them to go pick up the guns and the girls didn't know where he was and thought he had left them. Shoz buried the guns and returned with two mules which they rode to the ranch on. The girls were welcomed at the ranch and Shoz went back into town. Lucy and Joanna went into town the next day to find Shoz. Lucy attempted to pay him to keep quiet about what happened between them and to leave town. Shoz couldn't leave until he gotten rid of the guns. He went to the bar and got beat up. Derek arrived and saw what happened and told the sheriff so he didn't get charged with anything. Derek fired the two men who had fought with Shoz. Shoz was hit on the back of the head pretty hard and needed stitches. He needed a cover to stay in town so he went to the ranch and asked Derek for work. Miranda came to check on him and told him that with his head injury that he had to help out around the house for the week until he was better. Lucy was not happy about seeing him around.
Lucy's fiancee arrived. Leon Claxton was Marianne's son. He had political aspirations and decided that he wanted Lucy for his second wife, his first had died overseas. He planned on asking for her had in marriage after Derek's 80th birthday party. Leon attempted to make moves on Lucy but she had lost interest for the most part since meeting Shoz. Leon didn't understand her behavior and kept trying to get Lucy alone. Lucy made sure Joanna was always close by.
The night of the birthday party arrived and Marianne was one of the guests. She saw Lucy and Shoz kissing and wanted to kill them. She was still obsessed with him. The two guys that had beat Shoz stole Derek's favorite horse and Shoz attempted to ride after them when he was shot in the back with a derringer, typically a woman's gun. Lucy told the sheriff that Shoz was following the thieves on horseback and it appeared that he was a party to the horse theft. Someone had also slipped Derek a note during the ruckus stating that Shoz was an escaped convict from New York. The sheriff arrested Shoz.
Lucy went to the jail to bring Shoz food and forgot there was a knife in the basket. Shoz used the knife to escape and took Lucy with him. He promised to let her go when they got to the Mexican border but the town had some outlaws in it that he was afraid would rape Lucy so he kept her with him. The outlaws followed him and Shoz killed three of the four. The fourth made it back to town. He was there when Lucy's grandfather and father arrived tracking Lucy and Shoz. They were close behind Shoz and he knew it so he hurried on into Death Valley. He arrived at his house and Lucy was very upset because there was a woman there who she thought was Shoz's wife and son. She lived in Shoz's home but she was just a convenience for him when he was there. He was gone more than he was home and Roberto was not his son. Carmen was mean to Lucy and knew that Lucy was a threat to her being with Shoz.
Shoz left to get the guns he had left behind and when he returned he noticed the behavior of Carmen to Lucy and he told her to leave and leave Roberto. She was sleeping with one of his guys named Pedro and she went to him. When Shoz left to go deliver the guns, Lucy talked him into taking her with him. Lucy's family was also tipped off to where Lucy was going. Her grandfather, father, and the Pinkerton's all went there too.
Lucy and Shoz were married in Brownsville, TX. They went back to the hotel in Mexico where Shoz was to deliver the guns. Shoz noticed Lucy's family and they both disguised themselves and tried to leave town. Shoz was shot and they were caught. Shoz was arrested and Lucy was taken back to New York. Shoz made a deal with the government to deliver the guns himself and get more involved with the resistance of the Cuban's against the Spanish government. He would become a spy for the American's because a lot of people had investments in Cuba they were trying to protect. Shoz was given divorce papers to sign. He refused but was told that Lucy had signed them and saw her signature so he signed them too. Lucy was given divorce papers but refused to sign them. Lucy was not readily accepted back into society due to her being with the outlaw, unchaperoned for so long. Her marriage was kept quiet. Joanna was the source for many people that were her friends finding out about her and Shoz's relationship. She had thought that Joanna was her friend. Her father arranged for her to marry Leon. Leon had tried to see Lucy and she refused. She then saw him and he didn't seem all that thrilled to be with her. She knew from this that the marriage was arranged in exchange for her name and money. It was not arranged for love. The day before the arranged wedding, She was given the divorce papers, signed by Shoz, to sign. Shoz was back in town from Cuba and went looking for her at the rehearsal dinner at the Claxton home. He found her in the library and they fought. She stormed out.
Shoz couldn't sleep and left his motel room later that night and went to find Lucy. She snuck in her room, they had sex and he left. Lucy knew then that she couldn't marry Leon. She went to his house and told him the next morning. It took a few days for her father to cool down from being angry. Lucy then told him she was going to Cuba. She went to her family's home in Havana. She soon got caught in a riot and Shoz saw her and took her out of the crowd and to the house. She made friends with various members of the American consulate in Cuba. She saw Shoz off and on and found out that he was working for the government as a spy within the rebel organization. She told him that she still loved him and the two of them discovered that her signature was forged on the divorce papers that Shoz signed to get him to agree to go to Cuba. They were still married because the signatures on the divorce papers they each signed were forged. Leon, Lucy's ex, was the consul in Cuba and Shoz went to him and told him that the rebels were going to blow up the American military ship that was in the harbor. Leon refused to believe him. Lucy was invited to eat dinner on the ship that night. Leon came by to pick her up and Lucy refused to go with him. The wheel came off her carriage so she never made it to the ship. She heard the explosion. Shoz went looking for Lucy and found out that she was going to the ship for dinner and he heard the explosion. Shoz thought Lucy was on the ship and started helping the sailors that were injured. He was exhausted come morning and could do no more. He was headed away when he heard Lucy calling him. He was very happy to see her and they clung to each other. Leon was killed in the explosion.
The next morning, Shoz made arrangements for Lucy to go back home to her parents. She argued with Shoz but he made her leave and he went back to working with the Cuban rebels. He told Lucy that he would survive and come back to her. After seven months, Lucy found out that the war had been over for two months and she hadn't heard from Shoz. She found out how to get to Death Valley and went there to find him. She found Carmen there and the house empty. Roberto and all of Shoz's personal possessions were gone. Lucy left and headed to her grandfather's ranch in Paradise, TX. Shoz had written a letter to Lucy telling her that he was going to get Roberto but she never received it. Shoz wanted to stay married to Lucy and to be accepted by her family. He decided the best way to do that was to get the approval of Derek Bragg. So, he went to Paradise to talk to Derek. Derek had already heard for happened with Marianne Claxton and that Leon was the one who had shot Shoz in the back when his horse was being stolen. He knew about the work that he had done in Cuba. He said he was proud to have him in the family.
Lucy got to the ranch and first saw Roberto. She was excited to find out that he and Shoz were at the ranch. Lucy told Shoz that she wanted to be remarried with a big ceremony, the wedding of the century with a thousand guests. Her and her grandmother discussed the wedding all day. The next morning, the ranchhouse caught on fire and Shoz had to go in and get Lucy out. She was trapped in the library.
The ranch house was rebuilt and Shoz and Lucy got remarried. There were a thousand guests and it was reported to be 'The Wedding of the Century."

Book 5. The Fires of Paradise (1992). Heiress to part of the Bragg empire, gorgeous red headed Lucy Bragg departs NYC to visit her grandparents in Texas. Arriving by train with her girlfriend, she hires a car for the rest of the journey, it breaks down in the desert and they are reluctantly rescued by a disreputable looking man wearing skin tight denim jeans… Shoz.… he’s dangerous and unknown. Lucy despises him for his arrogance yet the sparks fly. Appearances aren’t all .. unknown to Lucy, he’s gone to law school back East plus is a felon who has escaped from prison (wrongfully accused). Thru out the book, with his shirt unbuttoned or off, his low slung stretched taut jeans are featured.. unzipped a little, slowly, fast … she can’t keep her eyes off him and he reciprocates.

Seriously tho, this is a superb and riveting love story full of mystery, pain, suffering and separation for Lucy and Shoz, from Texas, Mexico to Cuba and it’s war of independence from Spain. Such a richly rewarding book, I kept having to put it down for a bit to savor what I had read. My favorite of the series.

This was actually fun. A spoiled rich heiress falls in with an unjustly accused, sexy ex-con, who rescues her, kidnaps her, etc. etc. They fall in love, of course, and endure many trials and tribulations. But the scenes from NY, Texas, Death Valley in Mexico and Cuba struggling for freedom are vivid, and eventually I came to like both of them.

I hated so much of this story. the main characters were insufferable. the mmc especially was horrible, and I never felt like he actually cared about the fmc. I did like seeing characters from the other books in the series I have read, but there is nothing positive I can say about Lucy & Shoz's "romance"

The Fires of Paradise is written on an epic scale. Fast paced with various occurences coming to you at warp speed. The only downside for me is the last part of the book. It felt disjointed and disengenuous to the story. 4/5

However Shoz considers her to be spoiled rotten brat of a woman despite that she is as sexy as hell no matter how dirty or clean she is, and knows he could be in deep trouble if he starts thinking tenderly toward her. But when his past comes back to haunt him and he is forced to take desperate measure to kidnap Lucy, a fiery love will emerge and Shoz knows he can never let her go and must keep her with him at all costs...The Fires Of Paradise is the fifth installment in the Bragg Saga written by Brenda Joyce. This is the first book that I have read from this series, and from the first to last page I was enthralled and could barely set the book down for food and bathroom breaks. LOL This story was very stimluating and the characters were full of life, and the plot kept me on my toes and I felt like I was on such a thrilling adventure I could barely keep up with it. Such a blistering romance that singed me from my head to my toes and had me on such a rollercoaster of a ride...and I just loved every moment of it. The beginning of the story was a bit slow to get into, but once it picked up the pace a bit I could barely put this one down....A winner for Brenda Joyce!!!

C'est une belle fin pour cette série.
Je me demande réellement si quelqu'un relit le livre quand l'auteur a fini de l'écrire !!!!!?????
Le livre commence en 1890, le héros a un fils je dirais de 4-5 ans.
Puis on passe en 1897, puis 1898 et l'épilogue se passe en juin 1899.
Comment le fils du géros peut n'avoir que 7 ans en 1899 ????!!!!
Il n'a pris que 2 ou 3 ans en 9 ans !!!
Aurait-il l'élexir de jouvence ???!!!
A mon avis il doit y avoir une erreur à l'impression car lorsqu'on lit le livre on a pas l'impression qu'il se soit passé plus de 2 ans entre leur rencontre et la fin du livre.
Ou bien une erreur de relecture, à moins que l'erreu soit présente depuis toujours... soit depuis 1992 ..... soit 20 ans !!!!!!

What I liked about this book is that the hero and heroine talked a lot more than in the previous books.
At the beginning of the book Lucy was a spoiled, rich girl. She frustrated me and I wanted to smack her. Fortunately she grows up rather quick and becomes a mature, although impulsive, young woman. Shoz knows her kind and he doesn't like them. Even so he can't keep his distance from her.

I loved the way Lucy and Shoz love for each other was described. How they wanted to hang on to that love even when things went bad, until they saw evidence that the other one betrayed them. And even then, their feelings stayed the same.
According to me, this was one of the best books in the series.

I admit I enjoyed this book and may have given it five stars if not for the pit falls of the characters that detract from much development in their relationship, but not individual growth. Lucy, as liberal as she claims to be, Shoz is correct in his statement that she may believe in equality in her mind but she also believes in aristocracy-- from the minute she meets Shoz she does look down her nose at him and make assumptions about him-- I don't blame him for his behavior towards her, although it ultimately stokes his bitterness. It was an enjoyable western read.

This is the best historical romance I have read in years. There is the beautiful woman born into privilege and there is the hardened escaped convict watching his back. The two are thrown together at random, but stay in each others orbit through circumstance and lust. Lucy is a proud woman who is used to getting what she wants and Shoz is a proud man used to getting what he wants. What they both want is each other.

Really enjoyed this one! I love a story with a not-so-typical plot - this is definetly one of those! I loved both Lucy & Shoz and thought Brenda Joyce wrote their love story in a phenomonal way. It got a little slow for me when they were in Cuba - but just a little. I would recommend this book to any lover of romance novels.

Re-read of an old favourite that I found while doing a cull of my overcrowded bookshelves. Still loved this story, which just proves how far from quality literature my taste in reading is. This story is just awesome and full of all the tropes that I love in a historical romance plus off the charts chemistry between the main characters.

I liked this book but it was way too long. There was so much happening but in the same time nothing at all.

Lucy and Shoz were one interesting couple, but I couldn't feel their love all over the book - the way I wanted to.

I liked the end but it could have been a little bit better.
