They were also dying. Overpopulation and unbridled use of resources were pushing a noble and martial society to a fall that threatened to end their civilization, even their very existence. In an act of faith long distance space probes were sent out. One of the probes found another species. It gave the Empire a way to save itself. In order to forge their future they would have to resurrect their past and revive old ways and traditions. However, this new species had allies. Many of which would rather fight to the bitter and bloody end.

This was an impressive first outing from Manley a writer who clearly had a vision and the skill to bring it to life. The character development stands out most; you get a real sence of who these people are and what drives them, even as they face impossible odds. The pacing is tight, with just the right mix of action, world-building, and emotional depth to keep the pages turning.

The story itself has a classic science-fiction arc, a civilization on the breck, desperate measures taken, and the clash between honor, survival, and destiny. It’s ambitious and well executed, especially for a debut novel. Having since read more of Manley’s work, it’s clear his writing and editing have grown even sharper over time, but the heart and intensity that define his later stories are already here.

A solid, engaging read for anyone who enjoys character driven sci-fi with real energy and scope.

One of the worst

Don't waste your time. This is one of the worst science fiction books I have ever read and it becomes apparent that their was absolutely no editor involved as it is crammed together and seriously lacks intelligence.
