The classic guide to hiking the Land of 10,000 Lakes, now updated and in full color!
View the spectacular waterfalls, gorges, and canyons of the nationally known Superior Hiking Trail, step back into Native American history alongside the quarries of Pipestone National Monument, or see bald eagles and other wildlife in Bear Head Lake State Park. Highlighting the history and geography of each route, this book introduces more than forty of the finest trails the Gopher State has to offer.
Each featured hike includes detailed hike specs and descriptions, trailhead location, mile-by-mile directional cues, gorgeous full-color photography, and a detailed map.
I reviewed an earlier edition of the book. Paging through the new one, I don't see too many differences. Of the older edition I wrote: "A couple of the trails in the book aren't quite as described (thanks to storms and logging), but that's always the downside of paper books, which can't be updated in real time and is no fault of the author. I ticked off a star for it, however, because if you're buying the book, you should be aware that a couple of the trails are outdated thanks to time. The rest of the trail descriptions and maps are quite accurate, however, so there are plenty of great places to explore and day hike listed in this book, making it well worth the money."
This book is listed twice on Goodreads. As noted in my review on the other listing, this is another solid "Best of" collection. Trail descriptions and maps are accurate and easy to follow. I don't feel like I got a full sense of what Minnesota is like from the collection, just got the scenic highlights.
