On June 19, 1865 two years after the Emancipation Proclamation Galveston, Texas became the last place in the country to learn the slaves were free. Today, Juneteenth is a joyful occasion with parades, speeches, music, and more! This engaging book teaches the fascinating origins and traditions of Juneteenth, honoring the freedom of African Americans. Photo labels visually define glossary terms and other important words. Maps highlight the places where the holidays began or are celebrated the most. ""How to Say"" sidebars introduce cultural words and offer pronunciations. Activity pages invite further learning about holiday traditions (recipes, crafts, etc.).
A very basic book explaining what Juneteenth is . . .very basic, but good enough for a start. We would have liked more info, and we will continue looking for just the right book!
I love this non-fiction book about the creation and celebration of Juneteenth. This tradition has only been celebrated and commemorated in Texas for a while, I am happy to see that it is now getting more popular around the country. Children should know about all holidays that are celebrated so that they can be well informed and have empathy for others. I would recommend this book to Kindergartners-third grade students.
This is listed as an early reader, and has very short sentences like early readers do, but the words would be difficult for most young readers I think. It’s a good very simple introduction to Juneteenth to read aloud to young children who don’t have the attention span for longer books yet. Very colorful and joyful book with lots of pictures.
