The second volume in a chronological history of the Starfleet starships in Star Trek TV and films, from the 24th century to the far future!
This in-depth reference book covers Starfleet vessels including the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC- 1701-D, U.S.S. Voyager and Starfleet's first true warship - the U.S.S. Defiant. The final chapter features time traveling ships from the distant future.
All the featured ships are illustrated with CG artwork, including original VFX models made for the TV show.
The second volume presenting the first chronological history of all of the Starfleet ships featured in the Star Trek television programs and films. This volume presents the technical information, service history, and artwork of the iconic ships featured in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: First Contact, and Star Trek: Nemesis.
And so on to the final instalment in the series - although I do wonder with the success of Picard and Discovery if we are about to see another wave of creations enter the fold (I sincerely hope so).
With this last book (I do not think there is an official order to the books rather when they were published) we seen probably the most recognisable of the craft from the world of Star Trek (apart form probably the original Bird of Prey - I still wish I had the Dinky toy version even now).
This book again has a wonderfully modern (and consistent) series of images and detailed explanations and biographies of the various Starfleet ships. I will admit in this book there are quite wide variations in what they cover (some ship have a single page others have many - and not for those craft you would expect either). there are also a few additional pages thrown in as well which though interesting were not expected.
In short if you enjoyed the various series this is a great book - and like I said for the previous instalment it has sent me on several video clip searches to find the referenced craft.
The high production values and clear, computer-rendered images of little-seen ships made this an enjoyable book to flip through or read in small segments. The text portions are understandably thin, and mostly recap episodes or describe the graphic you can see with your own eyes ("the bridge is located in a recess on the upper hull..."). But there's a reason most of the kit-bash ships were given just a line or two in the old Star Trek Encyclopedia, so there's not much to work with. Worth a look for a fan, but maybe not a read.
The art and photos are very nice, and would be an excellent resource if you are into doing Star Trek art or model building. The text is okay, but it uses a lot of cut-and-paste repetition of the starship backgrounds, and spends a lot of space rehashing the plot of episodes and movies you've probably seen. I'd give it a 3.5 stars if I could.
I think that this is a great book for the right audience, but it wasn't what I was looking for. I was more interested in technical specifications, and this was more a summary of what the ships did in the shows.
There are a ton of ships and exterior illustrations.
Picked this up for my Star Trek: Adventures game, really (okay, fine, I also have the Encyclopedias and am a giant nerd even without the use for a TTRPG).
