Mystery man, recluse, finance guru… Virgin.

I was a shut-in for a reason. With too many secrets, too much to hide, and way too much at stake, I spent years in my mansion in the woods, never trusting a soul.

So, when a stranger showed up at my door, with her plans to save the world, I should have sent her away, like I’d always done.

But from the second she arrived, I couldn’t resist Veronica Cruz. She was all the things I’d been missing—passionate, generous, and so damned sexy.

I let her into my life, gave her everything—including my heart.

Now, the one thing she wants is the truth. The question is, will she still love me when she knows my secret?

Loving the Secret Billionaire is a sexy standalone novella in the Love at Last series, featuring a virgin hero and a slightly older woman.

NOTE: This coming year I have set a challenge for myself of reading one book a week that takes me out of my comfort zone. A book that may include one (or more) tropes (scenarios) that I avoid like the plague. Cheating. Older women/younger man. OW drama. Just to name a few. Nothing is off limits. I am taking a HUGE step out of the box I usually live in and charting a course into the unknown (HaHa). My reviews for these books will differ slightly from my usual as I will focus more on whether the author wowed me despite it having content I avoid. That said, I will go into each book with an open mind and an open heart and who knows, maybe I will discover a new favorite author on the way!

description

description ~THIS BOOK INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING TROPES (SCENARIOS) I USUALLY AVOID~
-- Virgin Hero
-- Older Woman (28) -- Younger Man (23)

~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~
Usually, I avoid books with virgin heroes, but this one sounded cute so I thought I would give it a go. Come to find out, it was also an older woman/younger man book (blah). In any case, it turned out to be a cute read. It was super short and was told in dual POVs. The pace was good. The plot was good but held SO much more potential. Everything from the plot to the characters felt underdeveloped. Last, it was all wrapped up in a sweet ending.

~HERO~
ZACH...Zach was OK. He was a 23-year-old virgin. He was blind. He was a shut-in. His character intrigued me a lot and I wish he had been fleshed out a lot more. His background is barely developed. I also thought he was a fairly BETA hero.

~HEROINE~
VERONICA...Veronica was OK as well. She was 28 and not a virgin. Again, her character was WAY underdeveloped. She also came across quite self-righteous near the end.

description

~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~
There really aren't many secondary characters in this one. Basically just Veronica's friend O'Neal. Her book is up next.

~HEAT LEVEL~
LOW. There is just one sex scene in this one and it had a weird awkward feeling to it. (IMO). Probably because the hero was blind and a virgin. It was like the heroine was teaching him. I dunno, it just felt off to me.

~ANGST LEVEL~
Low. Other than the big drama at the end, this was a pretty straightforward insta-lust read. There was also no OW or OM drama.

~IN THE END~
Like I said, it was a sweet read. Just don't go into it expecting a lot of depth. I think if it had been longer and more fleshed out it would have made for an excellent read. But this will appeal to lovers of virgin heroes and who like their romance books drama free. Therefore, yours truly is going to give this book one thumb up.description

After the third book, I wanted more, so here I am.
This author makes these short but very well executed stories of people who meet each other randomly and fall in love hard and fast.

It wasn't perfect or all too deep, some moments were questionable or unbelievable, but damn, I loved the characters and their chemistry!! And there was a little something, not mentioned in the blurb, that made it intense and quite unique.

So if you are in a mood for something light and intense at the same time, go for it, it was lovely.

Unfortunately, this novella didn't really work for me.

The premise is really intriguing...reclusive, virgin hero + heroine running for city council...but the story suffered from little substance and development. With nothing to sink my teeth into, the insta lust/connection didn’t ring true and unfortunately, had me rolling my eyes.

Also, the writing is choppy and the dialogue is just downright awkward and stilted. It sounded so mechanical and robotic.

And while I think consent is incredibly sexy...here it went too far for my personal tastes. Can I touch you here? Is this okay? Do you like this? Can I keep going? The frequent check in pulled me out of the moment.

There’s supposed to be an age gap between Zach and Veronica, but I don't think we ever learn Veronica’s age. Zach is in his early twenties, and Veronica makes a comment that he’s a younger man and she’s a cradle robber. But she doesn’t really come off as much older than Zach.

Overall, as much as I wanted to like this…it was just awkward and cheesy.

A short and steamy novella featuring a blind, recluse, virgin, dirty talker hero and an older woman hit many right spots for me. I enjoyed the premise but wished the heroine's character could have been more developed as well as some aspects relative to the hero's recluse situation.
All in all I enjoyed this short story, I do believe this could have been an even better full novel. I was left wanting more from these two characters, which is a good thing, it made me start the next book as soon as I was done with this one. A nice palate cleanser!

I found this charming and an accessible entry point into the world of crazy sauce contemporaries. Yes, the hero is a reclusive, blind, white hat hacking billionaire.... WHAT OF IT?? I loved that his initial attraction to the heroine was her passion in fighting for the things she cares about. All around, while a little uneven in pacing, I thought this was super cute

Loving the Secret Billionaire by Adriana Anders is the First Book in the Love at Last Series. This is the story of Veronica Cruz and Zach Hubler.
Veronica is running for city council and the last house she stops at to plead her chance for their vote is Zach. Zach is blind a a few years younger than herself but they have chemistry right off the bat. Zach keeps to himself not worried about how things look around him since he can't see and doesn't socialize. But when Veronica burst into his door there is something about her that now one else has and he goes forward to help her...and somersetting else.
This had been originally released as Rogue Desire anthology but I somehow missed it the first time around so I was so happy to find it this time.

This is a terrible title for a sweet, short love story between a fiery teacher running for city council (I have to admit she was basically AOC in my head) and a blind recluse financial whiz/white-hat hacker.

This review was copied from my romance novel review blog: Romantically Inclined Reviews

I originally read Loving the Secret Billionaire by Adriana Anders when it was a short snippet of a story in the Rogue Desire Anthology. Adriana Anders rightfully decided that the story of Veronica and Zach was one that needed to be expanded on (thank the Lord).

Novellas are interesting because you have to put aside some of the realistic progression of relationships in order to fit everything inside of a little package. That being said, I thought that Loving the Secret Billionaire was wonderfully done in such a way that it covered everything it needed to but didn’t feel eye-rollingly cliché, just the typical novella cliché. When I finished the book I started to write this review and realized I couldn’t remember the title. When I scrolled back to the front of my e-book I was surprised to re-learn it because I don’t feel that this story has all that much to do with Zach being a billionaire. So if you're thinking this will be your typical billionaire romance (read: bad boy, wealthy man with no respect, etc, etc, etc) then you're going to be wildly surprised.

Usually when I read a romance novel the hero suffers from a bad attitude, rakish behavior, or just generally being an asshole. Just in the last few months though I’ve had the pleasure of reading more and more romance novels where the hero (and sometimes even the heroine) suffer from a diagnosed disability. It’s a progressive step for the romance genre.

Zach isn’t your typical hero. For one, he’s blind. It was definitely a new and enjoyable to read experiences from the perspective from someone who cannot see the physical world around him them. Adriana Anders had to get creative with descriptions and it made the entire story a unique read. Zach is a recluse, spending most of his time behind the screen of a computer and little time interacting with people in real life. I loved watching him learn to love another person and balance wanting to do everything for Veronica, who only wants to show the world that she can do this on her own.

Veronica is a preschool teacher who has finally had enough with the negative political climate she’s faced with every day. She decides to do something about it by running for office against a wealthy, experienced politician. She was spunky, quirky, and outgoing, but not without some realistic hesitance to the veil of secrecy surrounding Zach.

I wasn’t expecting the chemistry between them to be as unbelievably hot as it was. I guess I just figured an inexperienced blind man and a budding politician might take things a little more tame in the bedroom. Not so. This is some sweat-producing, gasp-worthy stuff between these pages. Again, I loved that Veronica and Zach were forced, due to Zach’s disability, to communicate more verbally than other couples might be required to because it led to a lot of dirty talk. Who doesn’t love dirty talk?

All in all, Loving the Secret Billionaire is a spicy novella worth a read, especially if you, like so many others, are into political awareness and rising up against the current state of affairs. That said, it’s also good read for someone who just wants a short, passionate couple hours spent with a unique pairing of characters.

Veronica is running for local city council. She has no prior experience or proper funding but runs her campaign on pure passion to do right by the community. Her rich opponent has plenty of donors to fill his coffers so it's a massive uphill battle for Veronica to just keep up and get her message out there. Then her life literally changes when she overcomes any qualms about canvassing the last house in a neighbourhood. One that doesn't look very inviting but she can't leave any stone unturned when she doesn't have too many other means to get her message in front of the people. The reclusive Zach opens his doors and winds up enchanted by Veronica's zeal and reasoning for running for office. Never having the need before to be involved in something, he finds himself inspired and wanting to be on her side, and before you know it he's helping her in ways she couldn't have fathomed.

As you can gather from the title, Zach has the dollars to help make a difference to her campaign. But it's not just that that's a draw between these two. Veronica's genuine interest in people and desire to help contrasts with Zach's isolated life. Meeting her has been life-changing for him, too. The spark that was there when they first met burns stronger the more they're in contact, and they have heat! I do like the twist that he's an inexperienced younger man and is drawn to Veronica's confidence and sense of purpose. I also like the big secret surrounding him but I'm not going to tell here ;-)

Loving the Secret Billionaire was first features in the Rogue Desire anthology where the idea is to present short romance stories with some politics thrown in. It's a chance to highlight any pressing social undercurrent in a less in your face kind of way. I didn't get the chance to read it in this anthology but the expanded novella is fast-moving delicious sweet treat of a read that you can devour quickly. Filled with passion, sexy times, and most importantly heart, it'll bring you smiles!

FINAL DECISION: Disappointing and banal after a great description of what the setup for the story is.

THE STORY: Veronica Cruz is a teacher turned political candidate when she wants to be active in her community. A big underdog, Veronica is out campaigning door to door when she arrives at a house with a mysterious occupant. Zach is a reclusive man. Blind, Zach lives in his own world. But Veronica touches something in him and begins to bring him out. But Zach has lots of secrets including why he has secluded himself.

OPINION: This novella was disappointing on just about every level. The connection between the hero and heroine was boring and didn't interest me at all. The reasons for Zach being secluded were not persuasive. After we learn the lengths that Zach would go to help Veronica's candidacy and which she found objectionable, she was still willing to continue on. A person so concerned with the morality as her would have withdrawn herself. Instead, she basically benefits from what he did and allows herself to claim she is not tainted by what he did -- but she clearly did benefit. Then she completely forgives him in the end. And he escapes all punishment for his actions. And did I mention that there basically was not connection between the characters.

I read this novella because it came highly recommended on by an author that I love. Just goes to show me that just because I love an author doesn't mean we have the same tastes in books.

WORTH MENTIONING: Hero is a virgin.

CONNECTED BOOKS: LOVING THE SECRET BILLIONAIRE is the first book in the Love at Last series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 1.5 stars. This review was originally posted on Top10RomanceBooks.com

2'5 estrellitas.

This book could’ve gone terribly wrong for me. I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m totally over the billionaire trope. But, I ADORE the author, so I wasn’t about to NOT read the book when it came out. And as usual, I wasn’t disappointed.

First of all, just for the sake of full disclosure, this story was originally published in the Rogue Desire anthology. But even if you read it there, it’s worth a reread, because there’s some new content added this time around.

There’s a few things that make this different from (better than, actually) your average billionaire romance. First of all, the hero, Zach, is a recluse. Y’all know I love me some recluse heroes. Secondly, Zach isn’t an alphahole, and he isn’t perfect; he’s blind. Y’all know I love me some perfectly imperfect heroes. And finally, Zach is the most special, sparkly unicorn of romance heroes: a virgin. (Stay tuned, because we’ve got a list of book recommendations for virgin romance heroes coming on May 25th.) This constellation of unique traits made Zach perfect romance hero catnip for readers who, like me, are sick of the manwhore alphas who are the hottest, most perfect physical specimen ever.

I liked Veronica, too. She’s tough and smart and dedicated to her cause (bettering her community). She’s also older than Zach, so, yay! You don’t see too much of that in romance land. (We have a list in our archives of our favorite older woman/younger man romances here, but we would’ve been hard-pressed to come up with too many more recommendations.)

This was also a quick, easy, low-angst read. I’m not a huge fan of angst or super lengthy reads, so this one worked nicely for me.

The only way I could’ve loved this novella more would be if it had been a full-length novel instead. I think the characters and story were interesting enough that everything could’ve been fleshed out a little more and stretched into a full-length novel.

But all in all, this was another win for Adriana Anders, and I’ll happily keep 1-clicking the crap out of everything she publishes.

Full disclosure: We received an ARC from the author, free of charge.

Loving the Secret Billionaire is a short, sweet story. Just because it is a quick read, it doesn't mean it's lacking in substance.

Veronica and Zach's story is full of heat, and I mean panty dropping worthy! I loved both of these characters. I also loved how a knock on a door changed Veronica's life and set Zach down a road of discovery.

If you want to put a smile on your face and a little blush on your cheeks, Loving the Secret Billionaire is the book for you. ♥️♥️

This was a quick, fun, steamy read but I wish it had been a novel instead of a novella. We're missing out on Anders's usual wonderfully developed characters. Some necessary character growth was sacrificed because of the shorter structure. I have some questions about the representation of Zach's blindness and wish it had been further expounded upon. I loved Zach and Veronica as individuals and as a couple and wish their story had had more to it, as I didn't always understand their motivations or reasoning for their actions. That may be my own personal preference, as novellas aren't always my cup of tea. What I really loved, however, was the political campaign as the backdrop for the story, including why Veronica decided to run and how people got on board with her message. This was super relatable and commendable! I am a huge fan of Adriana Anders's writing and I'm excited to see how this new series develops, hopefully in longer form.

Disclosure: I received an advance copy from the author in exchange for an honest opinion.

A thoroughly enjoyable novella. Veronica Cruz is a Guatemalan preschool teacher that is running for city council. While campaigning she meets Zach Hubler, a reclusive, blind guy. They form a sweet relationship (BTW, he's a virgin!). There are a few bumps in the road, but they have a lovely HEA.

I always admire writers that can build a fully believable relationship in the course of a short novella. This one totally works. Cute, clever, sweet, endearing. Loved it.

This was a fun, fast paced read that was romantic and exactly what I was in the mood for. Older woman, blind hero just worked perfectly. A hint of drama, and the story focused on politics but not heavily so, and it had a HEA. Great characters, good atmosphere. 5 ⭐

When I first opened this book to begin reading it, I was immediately disappointed. It was only 92 pages! That is not nearly enough Adriana Anders goodness to keep me happy. However, knowing it WOULD be Adriana Anders goodness, I forged ahead. I have two words for Ms. Anders: WRITE FASTER!
I normally don't like to read novellas because they are too short. They need more substance, more emotion, more character development.... just MORE. The only reason I thought this one needed more is because it was so incredibly GOOD! What I find so fascinating about this author is how she takes unusual circumstances or unique characters and turns them into a truly believable story.
Zach Hubler is not the typical alpha hero I drool over. He's strong and sexy and knows what he wants.... but he's also blind, a recluse and a virgin. Say what?? I was not expecting that. (Yes, I may have known if I'd read the description, but did I mention it's Adriana Anders? ) He's also young, and extremely wealthy.
When Veronica shows up at Zach's house while out canvassing for her city council campaign, the last thing she expects is the tall, gruff sex god who opens the door. From the moment they met he was full of surprises. The chemistry between them was instantaneous and off the charts HOT! Zach's blindness was a major part of the story, but it didn't take over or detract from the love story at all. It was simply included without being harped upon.
I adored Zach and how much he desired Veronica. The way he wanted to just breathe her in and keep her forever.... gah! The sex scenes were scorchingly erotic and the descriptive way this author writes made me feel as if I was a part of the story. It felt that real.
This short little gem had flirtation, romance, seduction and emotion.... everything you could want in a romance.

Virgin hero, guys. I like it. I also like that Veronica's a wee bit older than Zach and fiercely passionate about helping others. Since that's one of the things that drew Zach to her, I'm guessing he digs that side of her too.

So. Not only is Zach a virgin, he's also a billionaire recluse who's blind. Oh, and he hacks. In a good way. His hacking is the one thing that almost derails their blooming relationship. Veronica's not necessarily against the hacking, exactly, but she has an innate sense of fairness that makes her feel like she cheated when certain information about her city council opponent comes to light courtesy of her new billionaire boyfriend. (Not going to lie, that was a mouthful to type.)

As for Zach, he's intrigued by Veronica from the first and he helps her in her city council endeavor the only way he knows how. Which doesn't sit well with her. BUT...he kinda makes up for it. You know, with his big gesture and all that.

Bottom line: This sweet little story hit the spot. Zach and Veronica got their happily ever after and that's what I needed.

Great recommendation from Sarah MacLean. I enjoyed reading this short and steamy novella. The hero is a blind virgin dirty talker and had me one-clicking this baby before I could even blink.

I would have given this novella a higher rating if it were not for a couple of things:
1) I wish the story was a little longer -- I felt that things moved a tad too fast between the hero and heroine and certain issues (i.e. agoraphobia) should have been explored more deeply.
2) The epilogue should have focused solely on the couple, rather than including hints about the next novella in the series.

Overall, enjoyable! Absolutely love beta heroes, and Zach ticked all the right boxes for me.

This is a great book to pick up right now because the hero is a recluse who never leaves his house. #relevant

Veronica is running for local office and rings Zach’s doorbell as she’s canvassing the neighborhood. As she’s giving her pitch, her opponent shows up with his perfect family in tow and Veronica basically throws herself into Zach’s house to hide. Despite the awkwardness of their first encounter, there’s a connection there that they want to explore even as Zach holds back information from Veronica. If you like a Robin Hood type, you’ll be a big Zach fan. Also, I believe this is the first time I’ve read about a blind hero, and I loved that aspect as well. And what could be more soothing right now than a person who can solve almost any problem by throwing money at it?
