... but it's deceit that has Alex staring at the face of death.
Extortion, bombings, and assassinations have created fear inside and outside of the beltway -- all while being nearly invisible. Alex goes off the books to try to stop a group that has re-defined modern-day terrorism.
Alex has no choice but to pull in Ozzie -- they only find more death. A young woman with so much hope... two bullets in the back of her head. How does she connect to all the other deaths in cities across the world?
Alex can only see one common thread: a blood-thirsty quest to obtain control. And that control will kill hundreds of thousands to pad the pockets of the group's leadership.
Shots fly. Alex and Ozzie try to escape death. But how do all the pieces fit together? They can't. Not unless there's a betrayal that will turn Alex's world upside down -- just before she's shot in the face.
You think you'll identify the Judas. But no one can predict how treacherous the mind becomes.
Amazon #1 Bestselling Author, #2 bestselling author on Barnes and Noble, and a Readers' Favorite Gold Medal winner.
John W. Mefford has been writing his debut novel since he first entered the work force almost thirty years ago, although he never put words on paper until 2009. Once he started writing, however, he couldn't stop. Many readers ask John from where he gets his ideas. Well, he's a veteran of the corporate rat-race, a former journalist, and he's always been an astute observer of human and social behavior. On top of that, he's really good at embellishing.
A member of International Thriller Writers, John writes novels full of electrifying suspense -- the same types of books he has loved to read since before he could shave.
An exceptional thriller continuing the "Redemption Thrillers' by John Mefford. Ozzie and his daughter Mackenzie are still at Alex's house due to fear of being hurt by those who murdered his wife and bombed Alex's house. Alex is still with the FBI but goes off book to try to assist Ozzie in finding the people in charge who will do anything, murder anyone, to exert control. If this case could be closed, Ozzie would be able to go back home and start grieving for his wife, Nicole. There is non-stop action, with people being murdered, bullets flying and an FBI supervisor arrested for 'working with terrorists'! The suspense builds up, you question every move and everyone!! Wonderful to see the family life, as with Alex's kids and Mackenzie, try to keep everyone grounded. The answers to questions are not found until the end of this enthralling tale. Another story that drags you along quickly, as you just have to read a little more...I am ready for the next in the series!! I received this ARC from author John Mefford, who I thank for the marvelous adventure, and how I am able to write my thoughts in this review, to let all know of this great read.
This edition begins where the previous left off and this latest is told mostly from Alex and Ozzie‘s perspective. The plot has a strong beginning; someone is holding a gun to Alex’s head…
Our protagonist once more faces new challenges finding herself in the middle of puzzling cases: someone is hacking ATM and dead bodies are turning up and witnesses are being murdered. If this is not enough to contend with Alex thinks there may be a connection to Ozzie protective custody in these cases….and if so this can be dangerous……
You must read this series in sequence to understand where the players come from and appreciate where the thriller leads us. We do not have much backstory to put us straight.
“At Any Cost” is a suspenseful and entertaining read. The plot is well written and pulls you in from the start. The author lets us know a bit more about Alex and Ozzie and how they adjusting to life despite the tragedies they faced as both are now ready to most forward….but will Mr. Mefford let them do so…there is no conclusion here so let’s see in the next book if we will have one.
Reading this book gives a good ride and does not disappoint. What is not to like: extortion, bombings and assassinations and Alex going off the books trying to stop a blood-thirsty group who wants control and pad their pockets…Shots fly, Alex and Ozzie try to escape death but where does this leads….How does everything fit together? … There is a betrayal …..by the end, a gun is pointed at Alex face…will this be her last day of life?....stay tuned… Oh yes, this is one of those books that leave us in a cliff-hanger….
Although I enjoyed this story a lot, it was not my preferred one in the series, at times the narrative seemed rushed and some of the action was not as strong as in the precedent novels. Having said this I still think this is not a book to miss out on.
I enjoy this series and can’t wait to see what Mr. Mefford has in store next.
This new installment in the Alex Troutt (AT) Thriller series by John Mefford revolves around the mystery of serial bombings that threaten not only the city but family and friends of Alex, including Ozzie Novak. Ozzie and his daughter Mackenzie are staying with Alex and her family after the death of his wife, because their lives are in danger. As a matter of fact, the books starts on a danger high note! In the midst of the turmoil, there are still personal issues to be worked out. Ozzie still needs to grieve the loss of his wife and get back to his life.
As a team, Alex and Ozzie are phenomenal, and his help is instrumental in unraveling this intricate web of mystery and mayhem. The 'Just Win' organization is trying to get rid of Alex and Ozzie before they are exposed, and there is a traitor amongst them. But still, with Alex working within and outside of the FBI and Ozzie's help assisting, there is a mystery to solve, and nothing will prepare you for the final truth.
John Mefford keeps us in suspense with the turn of every page, unfolding unforeseeable plot twists and riveting character developments all along the way. This is what I love about the Redemption Thriller Series that keeps me coming back, book after book. You can read them as the series or individually, and your still in it from the first page until the last.
If you haven't read any of John Mefford's writing, it's perfectly fine to start here. Or at the beginning. It won't matter. You will be hooked.
**I received this book free of charge in return for my honest review
If anyone is good at making my heart pound so loudly that it is deafening, it's John W Mefford! With each book that comes, I know we're one closer to the conclusion. The ride has been nothing short of phenomenal and AT Any Cost definitely didn't disappoint. John lets us get comfortable with how Alex and Ozzie are adjusting to life despite the tragedies that they have faced. I enjoyed getting a closer look at Alex's personal relationships with her family. Along with Ozzie, Alex is ready to move forward into a safe new world but with a twist of fate back onto a dark path keeps them from achieving that happy ending. The murders begin almost from the very start, throwing you right into a whirlwind of crimes that doesn't seem to quite make sense....until it does. Then BOOM! A betrayal - very close in nature - takes the world, turns it upside down, and violently shakes it into oblivion. I was left with a chill in my bones and completely breathless!
I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.
Oh how I love John Mefford books! AT Any Cost did not disappoint!
The book starts out with the typical suspense of a Mefford book that leaves you reading as fast as possible and turning pages to follow along on the thrilling mystery that leaves you on the edge of your seat.
I love Alex and Ozzie together – they make the perfect duo and these last two books have been extra amazing because of that.
AT Any Cost picks up where the last one ended and shares Alex’s view, Ozzie’s view and then a narrator view of goings on that all involve the current ‘mystery’ that we have been following for the last 3 books (although technically, the mystery started in Ozzie’s first book but we never fully realized it until recently.)
Mefford is my #1 recommended author when it comes to suspense and thrillers. His books continue to get better with each one and I look forward for whats to come.
While each book can technically be read as a stand along (Mefford does a great job on filling us in); they really are best suited as the entire series. And they don’t take long to read. You get so emersed and pulled in; you will find yourself finishing one book in a matter of days because you just can’t put them down!
Mystery, crime, humor, and drama for a compelling crime thriller!
AT Any Cost is the 8th installment in the Alex Troutt Thriller series. A detailed packed thrill with a new adventure that you don’t want to miss. The plot surges forward, pulling us along as we turn the pages a mile a minute. It promises to keep readers up reading into the night. Mefford’s writing is smooth, absorbing and always interesting. There is enough surprise twists and turns to satisfy any heebie-jeebie enthusiast. Mefford’s skill in plotting drama and crime that can turn on a dime is as sharp here as in his previous works. The characters are well developed with a crisp dialogue that moves the story smartly along. AT Any Cost will keep fans happy while showing he is one of the masters of crime suspense.
Once again, Mefford does not disappoint ! John W Mefford knows how to bring a story to life, give you a thrill and keep your attention. He is a very talented writer that I have come to enjoy and look forward to what he comes up with next. John does a great job of intertwining the characters from his different series. This author is definitely high up on my go-to author list. It is hard to go wrong with a John Mefford book and AT Any Cost is one of those that will keep you up late at night, seeking to read just one more chapter. Mefford combines mystery, crime, humor, and drama for a compelling crime thriller.
This book starts out with a bang--literally! Alex is cornered and someone is pointing a gun right at her head--she closes her eyes and hears the click of the trigger-----
You are then taken through quite a scenario of how this all came to be. Her house is bombed--did everyone get out? Ezzy-her intrepid housekeeper/friend has heart trouble--and is keeping a deep dark secret of her own! Ozzie is trying to help her find a really bad guy--and there is a mole in the FBI unit!!
This one will keep you reading and wondering up until the very end---the ending is not clear--did someone save Alex or was she murdered--I guess we will have to wait until the next book for a definitive answer. AT Any Cost
AT Any Cost continues Alex and Ozzie's story from the past several novels. Alex is the main narrator, but a good chunk of the book is told from Ozzie's point of view.
Alex and Ozzie are continuing to hunt down the massive terrorist group behind multiple events, but because of circumstances they're forced to do it off-book, without the approval of the FBI or any of their resources.
Investigating what should be a straightforward murder turns into a harrowing tale, which puts Alex in a situation that she can't escape from. Will Alex's kids be orphans? Will Ozzie ever be able to move home and begin to mourn his wife's death?
This book is an amazing addition to the series and will keep you guessing with all of the twists and turns.
I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.
If you know anything about Alex, you'll know she doesn't like leaving things for other's to figure out. Kept out of the investigation into the organization that's ruined the lives of people all over the world, Alex is determined to get answers, partly so Ozzie can get back to his life back home, not that he's a burden. In fact, with Ozzie at her side, Alex once again steps into the line of fire to try and bring justice back to a world seemingly gone mad. Do not let this thriller fly by faster than a speeding bullet.
Give me a book with Alex and Ozzie any day of the week, and you have a happy camper! This book is amazing! If you enjoy mystery and thrills, then you will love this book. I highly encourage you to read the whole series, but if you aren’t able to, this book will be great as a stand alone as well.
Even though Alex and her family are currently living in a FBI house temporarily, no one seems to mind. At least they are all together and safe. That includes Ozzie and his daughter. If they could only make leeway in the JustWin investigation, maybe Ozzie could return to Austin to get things in order and begin his healing process. Then, a murder that Alex is tasked with investigating, ends up with ties to the JustWin case. Maybe this is the break that they were looking for.
Alex and Ozzie have become such a fun team that I hate to see them break up. Each have their own strengths but together, they rock. I think I see the direction Mefford is leading this and I hope I’m right. I just can’t wait until it all comes together.
When you start a John Mefford book you know you are going to sucked right from the beginning and won't stop until you reach the last page.
AT any cost follows Alex & Ozzie from the aftermath of the explosive ending in the previous book, and the ending which left me going "oh my God!"
The noose is getting tighter on the JustWin associates and the tangled web that it has created infiltrating the FDA and various other organisations, see Alex having to fight for her life once again - I honestly don't know much she can take but I know one thing she is one strong bad-as woman to go through everything she has.
The story will have you on the edge of you seat once again from start to finish
After the shocking end in At Stake, I could not wait to get my hands on At Any Cost. The first chance I got I began to read this installment. The story begins in a suspensefully. Someone is holding a gun to Alex’s head, the trigger clicks and bam back to the point before the commencement of this scene.
Alex face new challenges in this installment. First forced relocation to an FBI safe house after someone firebombed her home and now she finds herself in the middle of another puzzling case. Someone is hacking ATMs and if that is not enough dead bodies are turning up and witnesses are being silenced. Who is responsible? Are both cases connected? Better yet, do the case have any connection to reason Ozzie was in protective custody?
While Alex and Ozzie work together to uncover the truth, they find themselves surrounded by danger at every turn. Once again, Alex is fighting for her life. She sure knows how to attract danger. These are not the only issues she is facing. Little does she know that someone she trusts would betray her. Wow! Talk about surprises. This was one the reasons for my eagerness regarding this installment. The reason for the betrayal is understandable but the actions are not justifiable. Alex is not the only victim of and it proves how far-reaching the actions of an insecure and petty person can have on a team.
At Any Cost is a suspenseful, page turning and entertaining read. However, it is not without its issues. It ended on a disappointing note. It was rather anti-climactic. Based on how the events unfolded, and my expectations of the author, the ending did not deliver as expected. Instead of the explosive, hanging from a ledge ending the author is known for, readers get an end that is not only predictable but also abrupt and boring. I was also disappointed with how the events surrounding the betrayal unfolded and how the author wrapped the matter up. This too ended abruptly and I thought it could have better handled. It felt rushed and could have done with some meat.
Conclusion/Recommendation. Overall, this was an exciting read, but it not one of my favourites. However, despite the disappointing ending I would recommend it to fans of thrillers and mysteries as it does have intense and exciting scenes. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I'm disappointed. I've been reading Mefford's books from the beginning. The first Alex Troutt book had me hooked - lives were disrupted; family members were murdered, and Troutt was dealing with amnesia and showing up for her people as a different human being. Neat! Smart! Fun! Mefford's other characters began to mix into that world in the series (notice how it's Troutt#8/Redemption #20?) and I began to be reminded of TV shows that spin off other series based on characters.
With this latest, the first few pages kick butt! They were so compelling I had to read through to get to the end and their resolution. And, I'm sorry to say, that 1) it came about in a very predictable manner, and 2) lacked the punch in the gut, tense nature of the opening pages. It had devolved from primal to predictable.
Then there's the matter of the story arcs that intersect this book. Again, like TV series and crossover episodes, we flip back and forth between two characters (Troutt and Ozzie Nowak) and I fond myself wishing it stayed with just one of them. Pick one, for crying out loud! The attempt at the writing gimmick came off as just that - a gimmick.
Look, I like Mefford's work. I'm planning to buy the follow up novels when they come out. But more and more, I'm reading authors following the TV series models, and it's beginning to grind. Series books have been around forever (Tom Swift, Tom Swift Junior, The Hard Boys, Nancy Drew, and so on); modern series include Dune, Anita Blake, and more. Frank Herbert's Dune series (and the follow on from his son Brian and Kevin Anderson gave us meaty volumes. You couldn't read them over night. They took time. Laurell K. Hamilton's Blake series began as shorter volumes and grew to larger ones. The lead time between their works expanded. Mefford, on the other hand, is churning them out. I, for one, wish he'd slow down and put more meat on his books' bones.
A new book from John Mefford is always something to look forward to as you are pretty much guaranteed a great read, and this one is no exception. It is a little different from the previous books in the 'Redemption' series in that there isn't as much explicit violence, but on the other hand there is no shortage of tension and excitement as the 'Just Win' organisation tries to eliminate Alex and Ozzie. This does lead me to my only criticism of the book, and that is that it isn't quite as good a 'stand-alone' read as the other books in the series, they are all better if the preceding books have been read, because of character development and so on, but the plot on this one does rather carry on from the previous book, but I am really nitpicking here and it isn't much of an issue. What this book does share with the rest of the series is great believable characters, none of whom are perfect, as they have only too human failings, but they also have genuine human strengths as well, with family love, loyalty and respect all being shown by the main characters, The ending was a real surprise for me, and I have to admit that I didn't spot the traitor until very shortly before they were revealed, and I will miss that character a lot (No, I'm not going to reveal their name, you'll have to read the book to find out who it is!)
I have no idea how author John W. Mefford keeps writing these thrilling, mystery, wonderful, fantastic books in the Alex Troutt series. This is the 8th book in the series and they are so good you can’t put them down. You could read this as a stand alone but once you start reading Mefford’s books, you’ll want to read them all.
In this book, Alex Troutt is trying to solve a mystery that has really put things in the grip of fear. Many people are killed and Alex needs to figure out who and why is causing all the chaos. She chooses her friend Ozzie (I love this character) to help her dig into everything. They are doing this while really not doing it on the books but that has never stopped Alex before. There are so many twist and turns in this book that it had me hopping. One of the thinks I like in this book and a few others in the series is the relationship between Alex and Ozzie. They have a very special relationship of not only working with each other but being true, you can count on me, friends. I hope to read more with these two. Another great book by author Mefford. Yep, John w. Mefford has become my favorite author. Move over James Patterson, Mefford has you beat.
"Equal opportunities for deranged killers." A superb continuation of the Redemption Series, At Any Cost again features Alex Trout, the 41 years old mother of two F.B.I.agent who was the main protagonist in the first six stories, and the younger lawyer-turned-P.I., charismatic but unfortunate Ozzie Novak, who recently had gained a daughter but lost his wife, whose story was told in books 13 to 18. Ozzie and daughter Mackenzie were forced into protective hiding with Alex. Now the two combine talents in their continued attempts to bring down the forces which had caused so much mahem, betrayal and death.
Written mostly in the first person, the points of view switch artfully between the two main protagonist with Mr.Mefford's eye for realistic family interaction, visual impact and touches of humour. It is an exciting compulsive read as the series heads towards the final conclusions of what continues to be an innovative and thrilling series.
Although number twenty (of 24), At Any Cost can still be read as a stand alone, although it is better if the preceding book, At Stake, again featuring both Alex and Ozzie, is read first. Recommended.
John W Mefford has done it again. This latest addition to Alex Troutt's series is page turning, as in I didn't want to put the book down. Add to that the fact that more than just Alex is in the book and it is like a family reunion of sorts.
If you read the bit above, you will wonder if it is Alex's last day to live. The book has many chances where Alex may not make it out of a spot. But that particular spot is like a preview at the beginning of the book. I wasn't sure I liked that little bit at the front of the book. I kept looking for it to happen in the book and looking for it to happen.
I also had some issues from a previous book resolved in this book. That is one of the great parts of a book being in a series. An author leaves you hanging in one book - and it may not even be something everyone picks up on - but it comes back so everyone will notice it and is resolved in a future book.
You definitely want to pick up a copy of AT Any Cost. It is a great read whether you are following the series or as a standalone. I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.
This book, AT Any Cost from the Redemption Thriller Series by John W. Mefford is stupendous writing. LOVED this book. Loved ALL the books from the Redemption Thriller Series as well. But in this one John Mefford gathers the characters together and they all function together to play their parts in one capacity or the other which yields a great read ride. Ozzie Novak and Alex Troutt are like cream that rises to the top in this one as they team up together to go after assassins who keep on killing their loose ends, while terrorists do their thing, and money flies through the air from ATM’s, as inside departmental government corruption is being set up and MORE. Bottom line is no spoilers, but it is never off limits to let readers know they can trust wonderful reads with John W. Mefford’s art/books he Authors so very very well. AT Any Cost, is a definite must read, and a page turner. Treat yourself to a great read with this one folks. I highly recommend AT Any Cost. Mr. Mefford outdoes himself once again and that is to the readers benefit. Take advantage of that knowledge and grab this one!!!!
Just when you think an author can not surprise you in a story......your wrong! John W. Mefford keeps his readers engrossed in his stories due to the fact of his ability to give life to the characters, and have things happen in the stories you would never expect! Alex has her hands full in this story and even calls on her friend, Ozzie for help. Things just are not adding up and Alex goes 'off the books' to try to find answers, but doing so, Alex may have just cost herself her own life! I have every one of these stories, and they just keep getting better and better! Go ahead and check it out for yourself!
“At Any Cost” is part of the long running series “ Redemption Thriller Series.” This is one of the best series out there right now. John W Mefford pulls you into each book until you are a part of it. The latest book is no exception. There are so many twists and turns you won’t be able to put it down. Alex and Ozzie run into more trials and tribulations in “At Any Cost” you think they will never be able to get out of them still in one piece. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have all the others. I am anxiously awaiting the next one. You really don’t want to miss out on these great stories. Pick it up today.
Alex and Ozzie are working together again. The cliffhanger from the last book set some predictability into play for this book, but the way all the details and threads came together was pretty ingenious.
The group dynamic is still evolving due to some personnel changes and after this ending there will be more. There was more time spent with the higher ups and how that impacts Alex and how she works. Her family and love life are looking good for once except for Ezzy and her heart.
This was a good story and closed the loose threads on a major storyline from Alex and Ozzies stories. Can’t wait to see what Vegas brings!
Since January of 2016 I’ve been immersed in the writings of John Mefford. Every book he writes is better than his last & if you were to look at my list of favorite authors you'd find John Mefford's name near the top. I'm a character reader, I get into the characters, their story, who/what they are. The author has done an amazing job of developing his characters throughout all the books I’ve read and as a reader of multiple books (20+) I'm invested & engrossed with theses characters. Another outstanding read!
'AT Any Cost' completely blew me away from the beginning. The whole book had me on edge. The characters, drama, thrilling scenes and holy crap moments kept me from putting the book down. I wasn't sure how John could keep topping each book but he does. His mind is quite creative and slightly depraved. But I guess that's what keeps me reading book after book. Alex and Ozzie get pulled into more a$$ kicking scenarios and some very interesting scenes. I look forward to reading more. A definite must read.
WOW!!! This series just gets better and better. A thrilling ride every time with curves that just whip you all around! I have no idea how someone can come up with all of this but Mr. Mefford continues to raise the bar with every book. If you love thrillers with wonderful characters then you need to start reading this series. It is unputdownable!
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
While I don’t object to a series that features the same characters and occasionally references past books, this is ridiculous! Imagine picking up a book and reading the middle chapters. You have no idea what happened earlier and what comes next. I’m amazed I stuck with this for as long as I did. A rare DNF for me.
Exciting engaging story that keeps you guessing every page. John Mefford has kept me interested and involved throughout the entire Redemption series and especially with Alex Trout. Anticipating the next book in the series.
All Mr. Mefford books are always 5 star. This one follows suit. Great characters. Even the smaller role characters are well defined. As usual I was hooked from the start. Stayed up all night to finish it. Easily my favorite suspense writer.
Another great book by John Mefford! I loved every twist and turn. A couple twists were surprising, especially who had the gun pointed at Alex. As per usual, this book grabbed my attention from the first page and I didn’t want to put it down. I Highly recommend this whole series.
WOW what a thriller! I am always excited to read the next book in this series. John Mefford never disappoints. Each one is full of the suspense and twists and turns that I’ve come to expect from this series. Can’t wait to see what comes next
