I need to revisit all the historical places like Sand Creek. I traveled to all the best places as a kid and do not remember much about them. A Warrior's Promise is an awesome read that really brings the atrocities like the massacre at Sand Creek and the treatment of Indians that Americans committed into the story of Claire and Peter Matthews.
The book is the Sequel to Capture My Heart where the U.S. Army scout, Peter James Matthews had saved Claire Matthews from an attack on her supply wagon train. Claire and Peter, otherwise known as Two Wolves are now married and running a supply store outside Fort Collins, Colorado. Peter has vowed to live in the white mans world, stay by Claire's side and to take care of Claire, who is now expecting his child. This vow is threatened when Peter is asked to go on another scouting mission for the U.S. Army. The Cheyenne and other Indian tribes are getting restless and angry by treaties being broken, whites doing raids and making it appear indians committed the raids and by Colonel John Chivington and the Colorado Militia that are out to kill all Indians. Chivington believes all indians should be eliminated including woman and children. Chivington's view is that females just bring more indians into the world and boys just grow up to be warriors so they all should be killed. It doesn't matter to Chivington that peaceful indians are supposed to be left alone and he has the Colorado govenor on his side of the isdues. Two Wolves accepts the scouting mission thinking he can help bring about peace. He is struggling with his own anger to get revenge for his Cheyenne people but he also wants to keep his vows to the woman he loves and his unborn child. When he comes across the remains of the Indian village at Sand Creek after Chivington and the Colorado Militia have raided he wants to have revenge for his people more than ever. He will get home to Claire but he doesn't believe it will be anytime soon and he fears he will lose Claire's love by not keeping his vow of getting home to her quickly. He needs to help his people without killing whites or he will be wanted for murder and be court marshalled for desertion by the army. He would be hanged.
Claire can't help to feel that when Peter leaves home that he is in his full Two Wolves persona and that she is never going to see him again. She is afraid he'll either be killed or he'll end up wanting to stay with his Cheyenne people. Her fears are only magnified when word of what really happened at Sand Creek begins to get back to Fort Collins. Days and weeks just keep going by with no word about Peter.
Another great read by Bittner that just left me wanting more and left me broken hearted for the indians. The story just can't end here. There is so much more we need to know about Claire, Peter, their baby and all the characters in this story.
