For me, the content of this book was too light to generate the inspiration it aspired to create. I give credit to the author for having an important personal story of re-learning optimism. She shares it with us and is clearly helping others more directly to advance toward their own potential. This book still fell short for me in several ways. The author is too much the hero throughout. For the concepts to be relevant, I'd like a broader range of examples. Many of the success stories are about creating a business brand and on-line marketing, which makes this book seem as much a vehicle of that process rather than a story of its own. I'm well read in this genre, and this content was much lighter than I need. Someone else may find it the spark they need to get out of a rut or see the world in a new, more capable way.

So I read these self-help/ personal development books every now and again. I can't say it is my favorite genre, but personal development is important and God knows I've felt stuck at times, like I've never fully stepped into my life's call. I managed to get a copy of Unstoppable Influence via a LibrayThing giveaway. And so I figured I'd read through and see what I could learn about being unstoppable, and influential. Also the subtitle appealed to me, "Be You. Be Fearless. Transform Lives." As an erstwhile and intermittent pastor type, this seemed like a good book to press into. I want to be all God wants me to be, I want to be courageous. I want to transform lives. In short, I really do actually want what this book is selling.

Natasha Hazlett is a personal brand specialist who empowers entrepreneurs around the world. She has her own story of feeling stuck—having a life call but not the wherewithal to follow through. She tells the story of her journey. She felt called to leave her secure career as a lawyer to work with entrepreneurs, but struggles to launch her dream, compounded by personal struggles with infertility and low self-esteem meant she was stuck. Unstoppable Influence tells how she stepped into her calling, found her voice and began doing the things that she felt she was made to do. She uncovered the secret of living by design (what God made you for and what you were meant to be) instead of living by default (just letting life happen to you).

Hazlett has a butt-ton of practical advice for finding your voice and message, being vulnerable , knowing how to serve your audience, monetizing your message and amplifying your message via social media. A lot of her advice reminded me of Michael Hyatt's book Platform. And the action steps at the end of each chapter lead you to reflect on your personal shape, and craft a personal plan to step into your own unstoppable influence.

However, I didn't love everything about this book. It has too much of the privileged new-agey Secret feel too it, of the universe conspiring for your dreams, positive self talk and 'think and grow rich' advice for my tastes. I won't say that there is nothing to that. I think people thrive when they find what they were put on the earth for, but the formula has it's limitations.
Still I got stuff out of this book, and I plan to go through some of the action steps and the accompanying workbook a little slower and see what comes. I give this book 3.5 stars.

While Hazlett's very informal writing style does make for a comfortable conversational read, the sum substance of this book boils down to a series of stories illustrating her moments of Divine Inspiration about her life's mission, her choice to leap forward despite the risks and fears into God's waiting provision, and the encouragements that you, too, can and should do the same if you want to discover your mission and succeed. If you share her beliefs in a God that will faciliate your success if you only make the leap, this book might be just the pep rally to motivate you forward onto that path. If not...

A few examples...

Chapter 3 narrates her personal journey to Unstoppable Influencerness, but reads like a breathless childlike sketch that depends heavily on leaps of faith and their rewarding Divine Providence to pave the way.

Chapter 4 tells a quick story of her helping her nutritionist massively expand her business, influence, and income, but is very short on detail. How did she do it? She decided to become an Unstoppable Influencer and she "burned the bridge". ("Just do it!" "What is 'it'?" "JUST DO IT!" "Uhhh...")

Chapter 5 on "unbecoming" and letting things go started off more promisingly, but quickly simplified into this advice: decide to unbecome, commit to it, and miracles will follow.

It does get better after that. And there are some good bits in there, about others not dragging you down, about treating your journey's hurdles as a challenging obstacles and not turn-back-now signs, etc. But much else of it depends on having a strong trusting faith in God to always provide.

Although Chapter 12, on waiting for what you want and God always having your back with his perfect plan, may have been one of the most naively ridiculous things I've ever read. But at least it was short.

The second part (chapters 13-20), her shot at an actionable roadmap toward Unstoppable Influence, is better. She still leans hard on her certainty of divine Providence, and deeply mistakes survivorship bias for examples of the law of attraction, but overall she puts forth a set of broadly painted pointers that, while not ground-breaking, seem fair enough.

One specific sample nit I have to point out. Chapter 20 refers frequently to a valuable messaging technology tool called an "auto-responder"; Hazlett's describing an email-list service which is not at all what the term "auto-responder" means. This sort of simple but stark nomenclature mistake can be very trust-damaging with those familiar with the term, and potentially disorienting to some who might try to follow the advice as described; it probably would have benefitted from a stronger editing eye. But... just an example nit, that.

I read this book as part of the Unstoppable Influencer 21 Day Challenge. The pitch, which I saw on FB, really grabbed me so I signed up. What I didn't know is that the group would be 99+% women. I moved forward anyway and really enjoyed the challenge and believe I got some key learnings and insights. That's why I gave the four star rating.

The book was certainly a big part of that. but speaking of the book alone, I'm still neutral. it is certainly worth the investment of time and effort, as there is lots of good stuff there, and she is just quirky enough (and bold enough to be herself) that she draws you in. Just not sure I really relate fully with her. Honestly, while I wasn't blown away by it, I am strangely eager to go through it again. I think there is something in her writing that is getting to a place in me that needs work, but it hasn't been fully realized yet...

So maybe after round two I'll have something more succinct to share...

Unstoppable Influence has a beautiful and inspiring title, the book itself is a combination of faith, ego, and marketing. It's clear the author was inspired and she truly wants to help others live their truth. The ideas are a blend of Brene Brown, Carol Dweck, and Ruth Soucup....with a heavy dose of Zig Ziggler. I would have preferred more personal development and less emphasis on sales/marketing and branding. The book is clearly geared toward entrepreneurs (and I'm not an entrepreneur). Overall it's a great first book. As she develops her writing and narrows her focus, her books will only get better. I look forward to hearing more from this author.

This book is HIGHLY religious. I also don’t think this gives much advice aside from mindset changes. The rest is mostly leave it to god.
