Pioneer Species

This collection of poems from Vermont farmer Ross Thurber is divided into four  "Green Popplewood," "Sunburnt Juniper," "Stag Horn Sumac," and "Snow Melt, Black Brook . " Each section represents a seasonal form of succession that is both literal and abstract. Ultimately the poems in this manuscript have been winnowed to represent a narrative that echoes the idea that, like a lyric poem, stability is only a moment in time―one to be cherished.

When we lived in Vermont, we bought our milk from the Thurber Farm. Ross had taken over the dairy from her dad, and I loved going out there. If I was lucky, I'd see Ross and get in a conversation about writing or poetry or books. This summer, 2021, we were back visiting & we swung by the farmstead to have a look-see. I found Ross's book of poetry--with glee, I might add. Also, I saw that it was published by Green Writers Press, run by Dede Cummings, a great book designer & publisher. I have very much enjoyed Ross's poetry. The combination of farmer or ruralist & poet thrills me. Think Wendell Berry, Hayden Carruth, Sean Sexton.

A beautiful take on poetry through nature & how our perception aligns with the seasons. Just like the seasons, I think my favorite section was fall. Each section followed my experiences quite closely, however I think he may have more of an affinity for winter than I do!!

"Soon you'll be so full of June light
You won't know what to do with yourself."

Ross is a farmer who lives down the road. He writes and works on the land there. There is poetry here.
