Don’t be afraid. How often does that phrase alone help us not to be afraid? For most of us, the answer is, “never.”

We tell our children, our friends, and ourselves, but the phrase is never effective if it is not followed by some additional reassurance.

In this simple, yet profound study, Karen May takes us into the stories and characters of the Bible that help us to see our fear through the eyes of a comforting God who tells us not to be afraid. She helps us to find the reassurance and trust we need as we arrive in the uncomfortable and challenging moments of our lives.

Karen May’s Be Not Afraid starts with the 23rd Psalm, reminding readers that “though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil.” But how many of us can truly make that claim? Be Not Afraid, a five-week Bible study for groups or individuals, faces those real human fears head-on, pairing them with Bible stories and tales from the author’s life, and offering helpful advice and wise encouragement, together with supportive examples.

Do unexpected delays worry us? The author offers the story of Abraham’s long wait for fulfilment of God’s promise, then asks how we react when we have to wait. Do we take our doubts to God? Do we sit quietly and wait to learn more? Will we be kind to ourselves even when we’ve failed to wait?

Beautifully formatted pages force the reader to stop and think. Well-told stories share times of relatable fear—even times when we might not recognize fear (are we afraid of forgiveness perhaps, fighting not to forgive, or of leadership and needing to take a stand...) Questions for reflection leave space for the reader to write. And closing prayers prepare for the day (or night) to come. The Bible study is nicely tied to well-chosen verses and stories. Good advice includes wise techniques for turning our own thoughts around and learning to obey that injunction to “Be not afraid.”

Bracketed between the 23rd Psalm and Thomas Merton’s “I have no idea where I am going…” Be Not Afraid’s studies are gentle, wise, practical and inspiring. A powerful book for any time of year, but perhaps especially for that flat time between Easter and Pentecost, when all the delight has been rolled into one weekend and the waiting begins…

Disclosure: I was given a copy by a publicist and I found it really helpful.
